Fantasy Sports with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

Hello to all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric, we've got an hour to answer properly as many questions as possible. Football and baseball, whatever you like. Thanks for showing up, we couldn't do this without you and here we go...

TD (Boston)

Hi EK, nice work! How would you rank Foster, Rice, Charles and Shady in a PPR?Thx

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

All are good, so I tell people take their pick. I don't have Foster ranked second anymore, due to injury concerns, so as of now in a PPR it would be Rice, McCoy, Charles and Foster.

Chris (VA)

Hi EK, thanks for the great analysis! Should I trade Chris Givens for Stafford in PPR league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

Well, depends if you need a QB. I will say Givens is stronger in a standard format. Prob won't catch more than 60 or so passes.

Brett (Fort Worth, TX)

I ended up with Doug Martin, Steven Ridley, Ryan Mathews, Daryl Richardson, Ben Tate, and Danny Woodhead as my RB in a 12 team league. Do you think I am okay or would you drop any of these guys to pick up any of Issac Redman, Bilal Powell, Knowson Moreno, Fred Jackson, Roy Helu? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (11:05 AM)

Looks pretty good. I might consider moving Woodhead, who has little upside and doesn't need to handcuff with Mathews, for Redman in September (while Bell is out) or Moreno, who could frankly win the Denver job.

Liz Frank (The Foot Hills)

In standard scoring leagues--who do you like better at RB heading into the season Eddie Lacy OR Frank Gore? Thoughts? Thanks EK!

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

I like Gore better. He's proven and reliable, the ohter is a rookie. That said, I have both in the 15-20 range at RB, so if it's a keeper, the younger guy makes more sense.

Tom (NYC)

Hey EK, just did my first 14 team draft, I got RG3 in the 5th round ( pick 65) did I reach????

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

Even if you did reach, which I don't think you did, it really doesn't matter. This is your roster now and how it got there is irrelevant. Griffin is starting Week 1, which is frankly something I said the minute it was announced the Redskins were opening on Monday night football. The NFL is pretty smart. Anyway, Griffin will be great in Week 1. You did well.

Phillip Rivers (San Diego)

Who is better as a backup QB Josh Freeman, Brandon Weeden, or myself? Thanks for the help!

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Can't say any of them are that important. If your starter is someone good, then it doesn't really matter. Look at matchups for the starter's bye week. Or the fact that all 3 of these guys are available tells me don't draft ANY of them and take another RB or WR. When your starter is on bye there will be QBs available.

Steve (MN )

What do you think about Kenny Stills WR for New Orleans?

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

Sorry for the delay. Computer issues. Still is likely the No. 3 WR and that should be a nice spot, but I don't think Devery Henderson failed to be relevant those years because of his ability. The Saints have a RB and TE getting 80 catches, and Colston and Moore are fine. So I'd say Still is not really draftable.

kevin (Dallas)

Should I drop V.Brown for K.Moreno?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

No, I wouldn't do that yet. But I'd own both somehow just in case. Moreno frankly has more upside for 2013.

Jay (WI)

Would you want Aramis or Victor for UTL the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

Aramis. Always hits. Hit last night. Plays every day. Both worth owning, but Aramis more power and he's ready to show it.

Pete (Bristol)

Bogaerts playing time is maddening! Is he worth holding onto in redraft leagues?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

The day Bogaerts was called up I said repeatedly Stephen Drew would remain the shortstop, that at best for the prospect he'd platoon. Sox fans didn't like it. Hey, check the stats. Bogaerts is not worth owning. He's not playing enough.

Matt (Islamorada)

Can we trust Arian as a RB #1?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

I think we can. Amazing ability to score touchdowns, though I doubt he gets close to 300 rushes.

Doc (NH)

Bernard or Law Firm as a flex Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

Gio is the upside pick. But I bet Green-Ellis gets more rushing attempts and touchdowns. I'm now drafting Bernard first, but I don't think the full transition happens in September.

Paul (Boston)

Is it worth holding on to Percy Harvin?

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

I don't think it is.

Sam (NY)

How reliable would Darren Sproles be in a PPR league this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

Top 10 pick. Pretty reliable.

jacob (pitt)

does vick have top 10 potential this year.. have him and big ben as qbs.. should i be worried??

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

Sure, great potential, but it's been 3 years and he still makes poor decisions. This is also a rebuilding team. I have little expectations in Vick.

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

Sure, great potential, but it's been 3 years and he still makes poor decisions. This is also a rebuilding team. I have little expectations in Vick.

Steve (IND)

Currently in 2nd place and just traded Domonic Brown for K. Morales and HJ. Ryu. You liking that deal? (3-year keeper league)

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Love it. Nothing against Dom, but he's slowed down, and Morales can deliver the same pop the final month. Ryu is nice. And worry about the keeper part of this in December. Win now.

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

Love it. Nothing against Dom, but he's slowed down, and Morales can deliver the same pop the final month. Ryu is nice. And worry about the keeper part of this in December. Win now.

Chad (OKC)

How dependable can DJax be as the #1 option in Philly? Good option in a PPR league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

No! Better option in standard. DeSean isn't gonna catch 70 passes. He and Torrey Smith and T.Y. Hilton are examples of WRs that don't catch a lot of passes, so value a bit depressed in PPR formats.

Bob (Newton, NJ)

Lacy: with the news that Harris is out for the year, does Lacy become a #2 RB in a 12 team League?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

Honestly, I don't see why people think the DuJuan Harris news changes a thing. Lacy was the starter anyway, and he wasn't gonna share much. I mean, DuJuan Harris was gonna be a problem? I don't buy that.

Josh (Chicago)

Would you trust CC to revert back to classic September Sabathia with the Yanks contending?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

No. He needs a few months off. I expect the same performance down the stretch. It's amazing he's done as well as he has so far.

Roberto (Miami)

Last try!!!! Can we go all in on S. Ridley or not? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

My No. 12 RB. I'm all in. Patriots are gonna be fine on offense. They'll run and Brady will still be great.

Robert (Columbus )

Uggla or Gyorko at a MI position for playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

I'll take Gyorko, but I will say Uggla returns today and with his eyesight fixed, he might even hit better than .220. Hey, that's something!

Alex (Chicago)

DeMarco Murray seems to be a pretty polarizing player (alliteration!) in that you either love or hate him. Is he a solid flex play in PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

Well, I'm not really a fan of brittle running backs overrated off their awesome first game. Murray has skills, but I'll take someone else in the fourth round for sure.

Brad (STL)

Where will Wilson rank in the RB rankings by the end of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

David of the Giants? Probably just outside the top 10. Could be in it. But a bit premature considering how little was used a year ago. Mad skills.. Chris Johnson skills.

Mike (SF, CA)

Sproules is a "top ten PICK" or "top ten RB" in a PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

Both.

Joe (Boston)

Hey Eric, You think Beachy makes it back to help for the latter part of the fanstasy playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

I'm skeptical he makes another start for the Braves this season, sorry. Might help in relief though.

DT (NY)

Don't you think Eddie Lacy is a bit of a reach as a #2 RB though, regardless of the Harris news? Rodgers throws it a ton

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

Yeah, I sure do, but to be fair I can't really find 20 running backs I like for my top 20. There's just no depth. So Lacy sneaks in because of his upside. And I don't buy the Rodgers "throws a ton" argument... Packers have had some interesting RB seasons in the past decade...Ahman Green, Ryan Grant, etc.

Joe (Boston)

Lacy follow-up: Why is no one concerns about Kuhn stealing 3rd down and especially goal-line/TD from Lacy. Rodgers loves throwing to him near the goal line.

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

I don't care about that because Lacy is the 1,200-yard back and it's overblown about Kuhn. He scored ONE touchdown last year.

Iowa Pete [via mobile]

Would you keep Welker in the 4th in a non ppr standard 10 team league. 2 keepers, shorts is my other in the 16th

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

It's not terrible value, but you don't have any RBs? I mean, you won't win without them.

Ricky [via mobile]

Where do you rank Reggie bush in a PPR league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

Right after Sproles. 10th or 11th overall. Numbers don't lie...

Alex (Chicago)

Are there such things as sleeper DEF? If so, who's on your radar?

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

Not really. I like Baltimore more than others.

Scott (Chicago)

Moreno or Knile as a 5th RB on the bench? CJ, Foster and Sproles are my starters with Tate on the bench.

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

I'll take Moreno over Knile at this point. Charles is healthy. In Denver, Moreno might start in Sept.

Ben (Charlotte)

so Lacy in the 8th ... i guess you'd say i did pretty well right? :)

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

Terrific!

Arn (Minnesota)

Do you think Kaepernick will experience a sophomore slump?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

No I do not.

JW (Virginia)

in a keeper league where would you draft the Patriots rookies, especially Thompkins?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

He's the only one I would target at this point, probably around ninth round.

Brian (NY)

Thoughts on Daryl Richardson?

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

Huge fan. Starter and has top-20 RB potential. I laugh at those that still believe Isaiah Pead is the starting. Nope!

Alex (OH)

EK, my man! I have my division wrapped up in my 6x6 roto league, with a bye to the semis. Any advice for the baseball playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

Check the real schedule and add some two-start pitchers in advance. Use them for the relevant weeks.

DT (NY)

Ryan Grant was 5 years ago and Ahman Green 10 years ago under a different coaching staff and QB... Com'on EK! ... This team is constructed completely differently than back then.... Would you use Deuce Mccallister as an example of the same for the Saints?

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

If you don't want Lacy then don't draft him. But please, the Packers were 16th in rushing attempts last year, so ANY argument that the team does not run just makes no sense. They run enough. They had no good RBs last year. Now they do. It's not a good argument.

Joe (LA)

your thoughts on Vereen in a ppR??

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

One of the RBs you move up in that format for sure, could see 40-plus catches. Might line up in the slot at times.

Dan (GR)

Hold on to Harvey in a keep 6 league or drop him (GASP!!!) for someone who can help now and in the playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

I think you move on, sadly. I think he will end up getting the TJ surgery when the Mets realize they're not contenders with him in 2014.

Jimmy (SD)

Do you draft two TEs

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Nope. It's one reason I am avoiding Gronk. Rather use bench for RBs.

Steve (Victoria, TX)

I drafted T.Richardson over R.Rice in a 10-team standard league. Bad choice?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

I can make the case for it, though I wouldn't do it. But T-Rich is safely in my first round, and he's certainly younger and doesn't have Bernard Pierce to steal touches. So it's fine. Personal choice.

Phil Elliot (North Dallas Forty)

Do you think Brandon Marshall's hip issue will linger & plaque him this season at all? Would you rather take a chance on Larry Fitzgerald over BMarsh for this season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

I'm fine with Fitz, but not because I'm worried about a Marshall injury.

Eric (Co)

As anowner of MJD, do you think that I should get Forsett or would you prefer Leshoure as he should get goal line Tds?

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

I wouldn't bother with a Jaguars RB handcuff. Leshoure is better and should get touches in Sept.

Jonathan (Maryland)

not sure why you are selecting questions from people who have already drafted - need assistance with upcoming draft tonight - 2nd pick - Foster, Spiller or Charles?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

Can only post questions I see... Any of them is fine. If you think Foster is healthy- I have doubts - then he's the obvious No. 2. I'd go Martin tonight, then Lynch, Rice, Charles, McCoy.

Mike (Rochester)

EK, a couple of friends and I are playing fantasy football for the first time this year so we started a 4 team league (hold the giggles plz). I have the 1st pick, could you argue taking J. Graham #1 overall since that is where the biggest positional dropoff is?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

No, I really can't make that argument.

James (SF)

I know you always say, "it is your team". But drafting JamChuck (KC) #2 overall in a ppr...you got no problem with that? I feel like he has the highest ceiling after AP.

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

I have no problem with that. And really, it's just a matter of choice. I placed 7 RBs in my second tier after Peterson, and really have no issue with any being the No. 2 pick. It's not like we have some magic formula that says it HAS to be one guy over the other. I'd go Foster if healthy though...

Jason (Fort Worth)

Is Deangelo Williams a little undervalued at around the 32nd RB in ADP?

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

Yeah, a little. Has all the opportunity. That said, he's not nearly as good as he used to be.

Drew (Eugene, OR)

What would be your draft strategy in an 18 team league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

Pray. And don't wait as long for a QB, because in a 10-teamer Luck and Romo and Stafford fall, but don't get stuck in an 18-teamer with Dalton as your starter...

Matt (MPLS)

First year playing Roto in baseball. In first place, but am over on my innings limit. Whats the strategy? I have started benching a few pitchers here and there.

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

Target available relievers like David Robertson that get Ks and hopefully wins. Clippard too.

Don (SF)

Back to WR Kenny Stills New Orleans.... You don't see him taking over Lance Moore's role? The guy is a highlight reel, speed and Brees has gone to him a lot.

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

I see him in the No. 3 WR role.

Kevin, Jersey [via mobile]

In a 12 team 1 ppr I was offered Vernon Davis & deangelo Williams for Jimmie Graham, should I accept it even if their bye weeks conflict with my other players at those positions?

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

Keep Graham. Easily.

Dan (Seattle-ish)

Full point ppr 16-team. Trade Sproles and Anquan Boldin for Calvin Johnson?

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

Yikes... I would draft Sproles over Calvin in that format. I realize it looks ridiculous, but when a RB catches 80 passes.. and there's no depth there. It makes sense.

Rick (Narberth, PA)

I bet my friend that Eric Decker has a better year than Mike Wallace. What do you think?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

I can definitely see that happening. The worry about a team's No. 3 WR beating out others' No. 1 options is ridiculous... the Broncos throw a ton, so they can make 3 WRs relevant.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Which guilty pleasure makes more sense- likeing the Browns offense or the Jags? I feel like Gordon and Blacmon have WR2 ceilings when they return, love me some Shorts and feel like Cameron is going to break out..am I delusional?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

Browns. There's something brewing there. Can't say that about Jags.

Jennifer (Miami)

Hi Eric, Please time running out in the chat, Need YOUR help!! 16 team PPR with QB TD = 4 pts. Got Martin, MJD, Gore, Shaub, Welker, Gordon, Bennett, Edelman, Tate, & Fleener and Bradford?how did I do? If shaub stays healthy, I think I have an outstanding team. I have added LaFell and Cooper via waivers. Possible trade of Gore for J. Jones but then I leave myself with only two backs, can I live with what I have at WR or make the trade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

Yes, that is a nice team and no, I would not trade Gore there. Enjoy the RB depth. Few teams have it, especially in a deep league like that.

Luc (Boston) [via mobile]

EK! Keep Torrey Smith for a sixth rounder or Witten for a ninth rounder in 14 team PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (11:50 AM)

Witten. Moves up more in PPR. Smith is not going to catch 75 passes, despite Boldin leaving.

Derek (MN )

Lamar Millar has a horrible O line, trusting him still?

Eric Karabell
  (11:50 AM)

Why is it horrible? Did that just happen today? Half the lines in the league are horrible. Miller has enough talent to matter.

Garrett (CoMO)

Ryan Broyles - worth picking up and dropping Woodhead (5th RB?)??

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

Yes, I would do that. Broyles could be terrific.

Matt (Chicago) [via mobile]

Keep Luck in 6th or Wayne in 8th?!?!

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

Wayne

Hulkster (Venice Beach)

Would you be brave enought to draft Cavlin with your 1st pick and then Jimmy Graham with your second pick?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

It's not about being brave. I just don't Vick Ballard as my No. 2 RB. It's not a wise direction to go in.

Gary (IND)

Tell Derek from MN that Olines matter MUCH more for QBs than RBs. MJD has never has a "good" O line.

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

I don't think he'll listen to us.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Keeping Doug Martin. Keep 1 from - Ray Rice, lose #8 overall, Graham (2nd), Kaepernick (8th)...enjoy 2 top 10 RBs, or go with the value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

I'd keep Rice.

Dino (Montreal)

People have written off Ryan Mathews--and for good reason. Do you think he could be a serviceable RB #2 in a 12-team PPR league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

Yes, I think he has that ability. But I can't trust him.

James (CT)

Fred Davis or Sudfeld in a PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Davis is so average that yes I'd take a shot on the rookie...

JDawg (Dog Pound)

Are you OK drafting Eli as your starter in a 12 team league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Not really if I can help it.

Mike (Alexandria, VA)

I saw the results of the 16 team PPR draft last night. I'm in a 14 team draft next week. After seeing RBs disappear so quickly, Is going RB-RB in the first 2 rounds is a must unless there is an unusual circumstance?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Well, that's what I've been saying for months now...

Erik (Austin, TX)

Over/Under 6 games Mendenhall starts before he's hurt again.

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

He's probably hurt right now actually. But he will play in 14 games.

Devin (Detroit)

Eric, which side of the trade you like more, A.Luck, Tony Gonz, T.Y Hilton for R.Wilson, Jimmy G, Nate Burleson.

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Luck side.

Jeff (Portland, ME)

Isaac Redman or Jacquizz? I am a S-Jax owner and proud.

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Redman.

Erik (Compton)

Who are the ESPN Answer Guys?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Geniuses.

ken swan [via mobile]

Smart having J. Cameron as only TE?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

In deep league it's fine. He'll emerge some.

JDawg (Dog Pound)

Follow up - Who is your bottom QB starter in a 12 team league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Luck and Romo are 11 and 12.

Kenen (FL)

is MJD not getting the love he deserves? Couldn't he easily finish as a top 10 RB this year/

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

Agree.

Johnny (Utah)

Hey EK, what are your thoughts on streaming QBs this year if you miss out on the top 12 guys?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

I've never seen it work.

Dave (NYC)

Am I the only one who think Doug Martin is overrated?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

Not at all. I have doubts too... but all the first round RBs have some issue or another.

Ric (Greensboro)

I keep hearing there's going to be a "timeshare" in Houston with Foster and Tate. Is this true?

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

If you heard it then it must be true. I think Foster will see touches scaled back some.

Ted (LA)

Who is closing for my Angels at the moment?

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

Not Frieri.

Bob (NY)

How much more do you inflate Sproles in a PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

From fourth round to last pick of first. So a lot.

Kevin (MA)

J.Finley top_ TE this yr?

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

Perhaps top 10 if he's lucky.

Buzzer Beater (MI)

Gore only had 4 games over 100 yds last year? Are you concerned?

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

Good luck finding a better RB3.

Brian (NY)

Best PPR sleepers?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

At RB, Gio, Reece, Woodhead.

Mike (Cleveland)

RB you think outperforms ADP the most?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

For now prob Daryl Richardson.

Troy Lazaro (Director of Multicultural Students) (University of

Would you start RG3 over Stafford for week 1?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Against the Eagles...yeah I prob will.

Eric Karabell
  (12:01 PM)

OK, thanks to all for the time and attention today, TONS of questions today. Really appreciate you reading. Good luck in all your drafts and look for more chats later today and this week! Have a great day!
