Ivan Maisel
  (12:01 PM)

Hi, everyone. Happy 100th birthday to Bear Bryant. And here we go...

jefe (Lubbock)

Is Gary Patterson concerned about the upcoming TTU game? I was suprised that he dropped Devonte Fields suspension just so he could get some game time in before the game this Thursday.

Ivan Maisel
  (12:02 PM)

I am pretty sure that that is not why Gary Patterson dropped the suspension, especially after the whole back-and-forth with LSU over discipline/suspensions.

Tyler (Athens)

Ivan How do you see UGA's season playing out?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:03 PM)

I like Georgia a lot. I like how they ignored the noise last week and went about their bidness. LSU looms at the end of the month. It's still a little early to know how good anybody is, though. Obviously, Georgia maintains its status as the favorite in the East.

Kelly (Tuscaloosa,AL)

I think Bama will be able to bottle up Manziel and limit him. No way you can shut him out, but I think we will limit what the offense does. On the other side of the ball it is just gonna come down to Bama O-line. We have the receivers, backs, and quarterback.

Ivan Maisel
  (12:05 PM)

I don't know why you think Bama can bottle up Manziel. No one has yet. I suppose Bama did for the last three quarters of the game last season, but by then the damage had been done. The mystery of this game is when the Tide has the ball. They do have more experience than the Aggie defense, as you point out.

Ed (Queens Village)

Who has advantage this week Alabama coming off bye week or A&M playing last week?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:06 PM)

I'm sure Alabama would rather have played last week. It's early, you want to work those kinks out against live competition. Alabama has played one game since it started practicing six weeks ago.

Joe (Philly)

Ivan, not sure if you will remember, but I posted in one of your chats last year claiming you were overcritical of Penn State. I just wanted to apologize - you have been a tremendous advocate of Bill O'Brien and his program, while maintaining objectivity. My post was a generalization of the undue criticism I saw from much of the media. Wanted to correct that for the record - thanks for your great work!

Ivan Maisel
  (12:06 PM)

A chatter with a conscience. Gotta love it. You are nice to write.

Drew (Cameron, Texas)

Ivan, perfect storm brewing in Dec for coaching carousel. What would happen if Texas, USC, LSU, Ok State, and other programs? What are some names to throw out there? Fitzgerald, Strong, Freeze?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:08 PM)

Drew, it's Sept. 11, and you're firing up the coaching carousel? Take a deep breath. They all have 10 games left.

J (Arkansas)

Have you seen Alex Collins yet? Best Freshman RB in the country?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:08 PM)

I have not seen him, but I have seen his numbers. He appears to be what Bielema always seemed to have in Madison -- a bellcow back. I hope he can stand up to the wear and tear. Freshmen often hit a wall at midseason.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Which job would you rate as more appealing to a top coaching candidate, USC or Texas?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:09 PM)

Texas by a mile. State university vs private school.

Joel (Niagara Falls) [via mobile]

Hello Mr. Maisel, Looking at the AP Poll, we see 'Bama, Oregon, Clemson and Ohio St. standing at #1-#4, and Louisville at #6. Granted that there are still games such as Clemson-FSU, Clemson-S. Carolina, and Oregon-Stanford, and then the SEC title game, are you thinking what I'm thinking, that with their overall schedules, plus, it's the final BCS year, it all looks like a perfect storm brewing for not only one, but perhaps even two or dare I say three undefeated teams boxed out of the National Championship game ? Thank you for your time,

Ivan Maisel
  (12:11 PM)

Joel, I think we're all going to miss the BCS for exactly this reason. Constructing the worst-case scenario for a college football season is great fun, and once or twice in the BCS era, it actually happened. Every other year it worked out, especially in the 12-game era. That 12th game seemed to help more than I expected one extra game would.

bq (pasadena)

How do u see the ucla vs Nebraska game turning out this weekend?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:13 PM)

I like UCLA a lot. But we don't know what toll the death of a teammate will take on the Bruins. It wouldn't be a good week to play anyone after something like that. But getting on a plane for a morning game against a good team? I think it's impossible to predict how the Bruins respond.

mark scott (powell, oh)

hi ivan. enjoy your work. curious what the national opinion is of kenny guitton at osu. thought he came in and did an outstanding job in replacement of miller. was a little surprised that the bucks slipped in the rankings... but there's a lot of season to go before worrying too much about that.thanks.

Ivan Maisel
  (12:13 PM)

I think everyone was impressed with Guitton's performance last week. I know I was, what I read about it. And if you're ranked right now, you're in the hunt. Position isn't that important yet.

Harry (UT)

Utah State and the rest of the MW are not patsies for Boise. A little love thrown our way please.

Ivan Maisel
  (12:15 PM)

Yeah, I am excited about that game. I don't know how a team with Chuckie Keeton at QB could be a patsy for a team that lost its opener 38-6. I fully expect the Aggies to play well.

Dave (Marquette, NE)

Hi Ivan. If...and I say IF, the Huskers defense improves to a top 25 caliber, given they're offensive talent and schedule that sets up nicely for a possible undefeated season, do you see them as possible dark horse to play in the BCS Title game?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:15 PM)

I am glad you capitalized that "If."

Andrew (NYC via Philly)

Hello Ivan, What are the chances that Ohio State makes the championship game if they have an early loss and finish 12-1?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:18 PM)

Andrew, don't you think we need a little more info here? Who else is undefeated? Who else has one loss? Did they dominate? Did Ohio State dominate? What if the weather turns bad in Columbus and Guitton/Miller or Miller/Guitton plays a snow game and beats Indiana 13-12? My point is there are more permutations to this season than a classroom of Ph.D candidates could list. Let's give it a little time.

Mike P (Lenexa, KS)

Ivan, the NCAA to my knowledge has not given a ruling on the Miami basketball case yahoo broke last year, if the NCAA drags out the Manziel autograph story until after the season what good would come from them dragging it out and why doesnt the NCAA rule faster in situations like Manziel or Terrell Pryor from a few years ago?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:19 PM)

Actually, that case came up in 2010, Mike. Or maybe 2007 or 1999. It's been a while. Only the NCAA knows what is taking so long.

Jessen (Atlanta, GA)

Miami's offense was held well below its typical numbers this past weekend in its win while its defense proved to be the difference. Is it possible that (1) its offense isn't that good against a quality defense and (2) its defense is only good against an anemic offense? Or does Miami deserve all of the credit?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:21 PM)

I thought that was a great win against very good team. The Florida defense is tremendous. I don't think Miami has to be ashamed about struggling against the Gators, and the fact that the Canes made so few mistakes against such a talented team is an indication of a great season ahead.

Jabber (Des Moines)

Ivan, just curious on your thoughts about Okie State...Is the story exaggerated? Is it true, but basically happens everywhere? Was it Les Miles? We need answers, Ivan.

Ivan Maisel
  (12:23 PM)

I haven't read today's story yet. I will say this: I know those guys at SI. I used to work with them. The lawyers vetted the story. Over and over. They didn't make anything up. A lot of former 'Pokes have said that they didn't see anything happen. Good. But that doesn't mean that what SI reported didn't happen. I would say that Ok State is in for a long fight.

Jon (Atlanta / GA)

@ Jessen... Did you see the game?? Florida pratically gave the game away. I hope Miami plays that bad against GT

Ivan Maisel
  (12:24 PM)

I saw a lot of the game, and you're saying the same thing I said. Florida made more mistakes. Miami didn't make a lot of mistakes, and coaches for 100-plus years have been saying the team that makes the fewest mistakes win.

Virginia (Charlotte)

Will Auburn be a true test for LSU or do we have to wait for UGA?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:25 PM)

If you think what I think you mean, I'd say you have to wait. That said, Auburn-LSU is a pretty salty rivalry. Auburn will play over its head. It did so against LSU last year.

Mike (DC)

Why is Michigan railing on ND being chicken when their AD was the first to pull out of series for the games in 2015-18???

Ivan Maisel
  (12:26 PM)

I'd say because he didn't end the rivalry. He just suspended it for four years. I don't understand why ND people are defensive about pulling out of the rivalry. You pulled out because you're going to play five games in the ACC. Own it.

Tim (Dallas)

Devon Gardener was extremely impressive in the win against ND (minus one very bad play). Is he in the Heisman discussion if he continues to play as well the rest of the season?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:27 PM)

I think it's Gardner, and of course, he's in the hunt if he plays like that (minus one very bad play).

Will (Washington DC)

After this weeks bye, If Miami wins against Savannah State and USF, could they be a top 5 team?

Ivan Maisel
  (12:28 PM)

No. Not with those two opponents.

bob nj [via mobile]

hi ivan upset alert bc over usc thoughts

Ivan Maisel
  (12:28 PM)

Are we sure that's an upset?

Michael (Dallas)

Big Aggie fan.The game this week,I know A@M defense hasn't looked that good.Do the guys coming back help(can't hurt)?I mean since they haven't played it will probably take some time for the speed of the game?Don't think they have that time to get ready.Blowout or close game? thanks.

Ivan Maisel
  (12:30 PM)

I think obviously they will help because they're better players. It may take them a quarter or so to get up to game speed, but the Bama offense has some adjusting of its own to do. I don't see a blowout. I think Alabama is the better team. I thought that last year in Tuscaloosa, too....

Ivan Maisel
  (12:30 PM)

Guys, I have to hop. I am going to do a phoner on College Football Live in the next few minutes. Thanks. Catch you next week.
