Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Tyalor
  (12:57 PM)

Y'all ready to do this. The first week of football season is always sooooo much fun.Let's talk Cowboys, Johnny Football and whether the Rangers will collapse. It's time to spit truth. Take a red pill and enjoy the ride. Let's roll

A-will [via mobile]

Good evening MR JJT....Do you think the cowboys have A team that could go deep in the playoff if they stay Healthy ???. Thanks

Jean-Jacques Tyalor
  (1:04 PM)

nope. I like, for the most part, their first 22. But their depth is shady and injuries are part of the game. It doesn't help that several of their key players - Lee, Carter & Murray - are prone to injury. for me 9-7 is the record. 10-6 is the top end and 7-9 is the low end.

Vinnie Vinci (Laurence Harbor, New Jersey)

Hi JJT,I always enjoy your columns. Please explain why a team would want to do zone blocking on the offensive line instead of man to manThank you

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

zone block, as Bill Callahan explained it this summer, is easier for the linemen because you're taking the guy in your zone, so it helps with blitzes and stunts. Your guys don't have to be quite as physically dominant because they're not blocking guys head up. You can be an effective run-blocking team either way

Scott (Dallas)

Romo + Dez going to be the best QB-WR combo this season, quote me on it JJT.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

OK. Romo had a 123.1 passer rating with Dez last season. They have forged a trust factor that should result in Dez having a huge year

Ted Stryker (Enroute to Chicago)

2 Part Question: 1. Is there a reason why the Cowboys aren't pursuing O & D line help? Surely there has to be someone out there. 2. Are you over Macho Grande?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

They'd like to get some help if they could find it. But you're fooling yourself if you think there's some great player on the streets or who just got cut that's going to come in and be a difference-maker.

Chip (Not Kelly) (Wichita Falls, Tx)

Is Livings or Johnson designated as a returnable player from IR? And would they want to bring either one back?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

pretty sure each is gone for the season

Bryce (Las Colinas)

Why do you and other memebrs of the media want Romo and Jason Garrett to fail?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

First, I don't speak for other media. I only speak for myself. I don't have an emotional investment in the Cowboys. If they fail, they fail. If they succeed, they succeed. The problem for folks like you is that you don't want to deal in reality. It's not my job to have hope, faith and optimism that every move the Cowboys make will work out. The Cowboys haven't made the playoffs since 2009. They have ONE playoff win since 1997. There simply haven't been that many positives to write about

Marquis (Atlanta)

Everyone's getting excited about the turnovers the defense has come up with in pre-season. I don't think it wise to put so much stock in it. A lot of the turnovers were against backups and guys that didn't make the teams. What are your views on this?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:13 PM)

I mean what do you want. If they didn't get turnovers folks would be saying I thought the new scheme was supposed to help with turnovers but I don't see the tangible evidence. It's progress and it's a step in the right direction. We'll see if it continues

Mike (Maryland)

JJT, I am surprised not to see the Cowboys kicking the tires on Marvin Austin? need DT help in the worst way, and he can help with Giant gameplan.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

he's always hurt. That's the last thing the Cowboys need, another DL with injury history

Russell (Moreno Valley,CA)

The Cowboys were blown off the line in the Texans game.Do they plan on looking for another NT.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

nope. They didn't play hardly any of their starters. I wouldn't take a whole lot of stock out of that game.

Marquis (Atlanta)

The O-Line has been a problem for years. I understand the philosophy of following your draft board. However, why pick another TE when you already have possibly a future HOF TE and and decent backup on the roster. Moving Doug Free to G is definitely not the answer. What are your views on the O-Line heading into the season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

It's shaky at best with Leary trying to come back from surgery and thoughts about using Free at G and Parnell at T against a DL that is traditionally among the game's best.

Bill (Maryland)

Why aren't they doing something - anything to help with depth on the Offensive & Defensive lines?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

Again, what do you want them to do. There's nobody they're going to yank off the streets this week who is going to lead them to the playoffs.

jeff (ponder, tx)

with the cowboys only carrying 4 corners at the moment and they have a open roster spot. do you see them adding another corner? i know they have carried 3 before but that didnt work to well due to injuries. since other teams can use 5 reciever sets and we only have 4 there might be an issue

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

they might, and it wouldn't shock me. The Cowboys aren't going to use much dime this year - 6 defensive backs - because they like the ability of Lee and Carter to play in coverage. It's one of the reasons they kept 4 DBs

NorCal Cowboy (NoCal)

Tell why I should believe in the cowboys' O-Line? or D-line?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

not my job. Make your own decisions, bro.

Chase (Dallas)

Spencer playin Sunday?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

i think so, but what do you think a dude who has missed all of training camp and probably won't practice but one day this week, if that, is going to give the Cowboys. I'd say not much.

chris curl (mcallen texas)

mr. jones, I am a life time cowboys fan, as was my dad and his dad. i am 42 years old and am honestly tired of watching my team miss playoffs and playoff wins since the 90s. i dont know what you did to this team but please stop and rethink what you are doing and get back to the jimmy johnson days. let the coach and a gm run this ship, becuase your methods are not working. yes you are making money but fans are growing upset and loosing faith. i thought steven would change things eventually but his comments on the secret sauce is crazy. honestly this team's core has no heart or at least has shown nothing over the past few years. step back and look at successful teams and use that sauce.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

good luck with all that

Chase (Dallas)

Waddup JJT -- Any update on our search for O-line help?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

nope. They appear ready to roll with what they have

Joe Gonzales (Levelland, Tx)

First of all, big fan of yours Jean-Jacques; fellow sports writer here. My question is, If he can stay healthy, how many yards do you see D. Murray having this year.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

if he could stay healthy for 16 games, I'd say he gets 1,100 yards

NorCal Cowboy (NoCal)

It seems that we again left value on the table in trading both Lissemore and Rosario. Both will be productive rotational players for there respective clubs. Seeems like we should have been able to receive more that a 7th rd pk. Was there that little interest in these players??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

you don't get much for players that teams know you're going to cut. Neither of them is special. Something is better than nothing.

David (Cowboy)

I really have a good feeling about this years Cowboys team. How do you see the Cowboys playing this year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

I like the coach, the coaching staff, the schedule and the skill position players. I don't like the OL/DL, the depth, the shoddy home record, the injury history with some of their best players. It looks like 9-7 to me

Steve (Texas)

Who you got between bama vs a&m and why..

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

as of today, I'd take Bama cause they're a better overall team. They don't make many mistakes

ADAM (AUSTIN)

do you see saban leaving bama and coming to texas for that 10 million all these fans are hoping will happen.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

nope. Why would he leave?

Richard (Duncan)

Who is the most important person outside of Yu Darvish for the Rangers to make the post season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

kinsler. Other dude in the lineup most capable of being a dynamic offensive player

jon (sc)

Do you think the cowboys can survive with just four corners with all the injuries they had at the position last year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

I wouldn't be shocked if they added another, but they're using their LBS and safeties quite a bit in coverage too.

Richard (Duncan)

DeMarco Murray will get hurt. Do you think the other backs are good enough to win?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

Cowboys have their best depth at RB in awhile. Hope Murray is healthy all year. It would be fun to see what he can do

Sean (Texas)

Whats delaying Spencer? Leary had the same surgery after spencer and is back at practice

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

every injury and every recovery is different

Jayson W (Phoenix)

What's happening to the Rangers' pitching the last couple of weeks? Some good but whole lotta bad!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

are you really complaining about the pitching when the offense has been shady all year? The offense has gotta do more

Mike (Tampa Fl)

Do you expect a shoot out with both teams coming into the game with injuries?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

yep. It should be fun.

TJ (Bristol, TN)

Between Monte Kiffin and Rod Marinelli, who do you expect to have more influence on the Cowboys defense this year, and is Monte Kiffin temporary?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

I expect Marinelli to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting this year, but Kiffin has shown quite a bit of energy for a 73-year-old required to work such long hours. Good for him. At Kiffin's age, it's gotta be year to year.

nick (Cali)

Was the cowboys always planning on trading lissermore? if so why not trade him sooner

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

He wasn't a good fit in the 4-3 because it utilizes speed and he's more of a power player.

paul (atlanta)

What is going on with the DL? We trade lissemore away for a 7th rounder and after signing him to an extension. We don't draft any DT's despite the rest of the draft universe telling us it was a team need. Rat is out. What is going on??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

two different issues. At the time of the draft they thought their DL was fine - at least that's their story. They couldn't predict injuries to Ratliff and Spencer, which left them short. Lissemore is a casualty of the scheme change on D.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

If it's time to spit truth, then put out a prediction on the Cowboys. You always say "we don't even know who's on the roster yet?" Well, now you know, and you know the schedule. At least give a ceiling and a floor for wins.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

check the chat. I did that like question 3 or 4

steph (at work)

Which player surprise you that they cut and what player surprise you that they kept?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:41 PM)

Sterling Moore was probably a surprise and keeping matt Johnson - even on IR - was a bit of a surprise

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Nevermind, auto update wasn't on and now is. Thanks

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

gotcha

Juan (Colorado Springs)

The Cowboys have made some minor moves in recent days. Do you see them making a MAJOR move to beef up the D-Line? Adding a starter.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

nope. Not a lot out there

Shane (Houston)

Could Manziel be a legit nfl quarterback?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

in the right system and with the right coaching staff, sure. A lot is made of his brash behavior, which might not be a big concern in A&M. But it's going to be a big deal in the NFL, where the QB is CEO of team. Think about all of the shenanigans that go on in the NFL. It rarely happens with QBs. There's a reason. You can replace a lot of players, but not a QB. They have to be responsible and available. Some coach once said, "I'll hand it to a knucklehead and I'll throw it to a knucklehead, but I won't snap it to one."

Rashad (jersey)

Whats the 5 you would like to see on the line? i dont like free at guard

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

it's not like there's a lot of choices. The Cowboys prefer Smith, Leary, Frederick, Bernadeau and Free. If Leary can't play, then Bernadeau and Free will be guards and Parnell tackle. See, not much flexibility

Every Logical Person Eeverywhere (Everywhere)

Since Johnny Smartalec can't seem to keep his mouth shut, how long do you think it is until an opposing team takes him out to teach him a lesson? You're trash talking to Rice, get a life.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

JJT could care less if Romo and Garrett fail. He does not ever ask the tough questions. He's most curious about what's on the media buffett for the day, trust me.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

Personally, trash-talking doesn't bother me. His problem was the penalty. You can't always get the last word.

Howard (Georgia)

Do you get the cold shoulder at Valley Ranch for your sobering opinions on the cowboys?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

Sometimes, dudes get upset. If so, and the mention it, then we talk about it. Sometimes, it gets resolved. Other times, we agree to disagree. The reality is most players know when they play well and when they don't. I don't attack players personally. I may criticize their performance. That's a subtle difference. Players don't have to like you, they just need to respect the way you go about your job. Jay Ratliff is hardly my favorite person, but I have certainly respected the way he played over the years.

paul (atlanta)

Does trading away Lissemore make last April's draft decisions a little more bizarre? Did we really need the 3rd string TE in round 2?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

He's supposed to be a starter in the two tight end package

Dre (Miami)

Why is matt johnson on IR with just a ankle sprain?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

the Cowboys really like his talent. It gives them one more year to evaluate him. It's not hurting anything. The last thing you want to do is give up on a player before you must

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Is there a QB controversy already at TCU?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

I don't think so. Casey is still the guy

Brady (Boulder)

Is it tough to follow teams so closely, and even get to know the players and staff, without forming bonds and thus an emotional investment in their success?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

Interesting question. Nope. My job is to give an opinion about why the team is winning or losing or why someone is playing well or poorly. Your life is easier when the team wins because folks are in a better mood, but it's not the end of the world if they're cranky. When you're around a team all the time, there are people you like, folks you don't and others you don't think about. When you're around a team all of the time, you see the players as regular people - not NFL stars or athletes.

Kevin (Reno, NV)

How much of an impact do you anticipate from Terrence Williams his rookie season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:58 PM)

35 catches for 500 yards and 4 touchdowns would be nice rookie year

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Blessings JJT - Is there anything that Kyle Bosworth can tell the Cowboys coaches about the Giants that would really make much of a difference in Sunday's game?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:59 PM)

I'd say it's more likely that his info reinforces what the Cowboys already know about the Giants. They've been scouting the Giants and watching tape from last year.

Casey (NoVA)

Spencer & Ratliff gone by this time next year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:59 PM)

i would think so

pj (midlo)

Hi Jean-Jacques, any reason to believe DeMarco can stay on the field for all 16 games?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:59 PM)

sure.

sterling (austin)

JJT, the Cowboys have lost a lot of close games under Garrett, what do you mainly attribute that to?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:00 PM)

too many mistakes at crunch time. Not enough talent. Good teams find ways to win, while mediocre teams find ways to lose

Harvey (Lubbock, TX)

do you think Spencer will be as good this year as last year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:01 PM)

hard to say. He's playing a new position - there's a reason why he wasn't drafted to be a DE - and he's missed all of training camp so we have nothing to judge it on. The Cowboys need him to be good

Howard (Georgia)

JJT, you have become a vocal supporter of Jason Garret. Why?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:03 PM)

I think he has a clue about how to build a team and what it takes to build a consistent winner. He has a plan and his ability to work with Jerry gives this team it's best hope for long-term success

Joonya (Austin)

what up JTT again...i have no more questions on the Cowboys...they are who they are...let me get an aggie question in...do you think Johnny leaves after this year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:03 PM)

yep

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Look here JJT, if the Cowboys get off to a rough start, are you going to pose the tough questions with attitude towards Garrett and Romo, or are you going to be stuffing your face with grilled salmon and asparagus in the back of the media room?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:08 PM)

what is this daily media buffet of which you speak? I haven't seen one around Valley Ranch in at least a decade. Could be longer. You really have no idea how I go about my business. Or any reporter based on the silly nature of your question. The goal is not to ask tough questions, the goal is to get answers. If you knew anything about being a journalist, you'd know know the answers you get at the podium are the most mundane. The answers you get in the walk off are about 30-40% percent better because there are no questions and if there's a really volatile question, you strategically wait for an opportunity to get Garrett alone, so you can get as real an answer as he's going to give. The goal is not for people in cyberspace to say, "Oh, what a tough question JJT asked. He must be a bad boy." the goal is to get an answer to a legit question. It ain't about me getting backslaps.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:09 PM)

It's been such a good chat we went over by about 15 minutes. I'm sorry if I didn't get to your question, but you can always hit me on twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas or on facebook. Be blessed and we'll chat again next Tuesday.
