Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings folks. Thanks for coming. Nice to see you. Hope you're fired up for the start of the season tonight.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the Best Rookie in the AFC South this Season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

I am very high on Jaguars safety Johnathan Cyprien. Picked him as defensive rookie of the year.

John (Michigan)

Should I trade Daryl Richardson for Cecil Shorts. My wide-outs are Greg Jennings,DHB,Britt,Decker,Cruz. My RBS are MJD,McCoy,J.Charles,Hillman an Ballard.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

I think Shorts will be a more productive player.

Atticus (Dallas)

While the comparisons of Locker to McNair in your latest RTC do breathe a little more hope into me.... Do you, Paul, think that Locker holds the same potential to put a team on his shoulders the way McNair did?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

I didn't compare. David Boclair compared. And it was just experience in context. I do not think he will be McNair-like and carry them in a similar way at any point. McNair was a very unique QB.

Tom de Bomb (Utah)

Feeling like Locker is not the answer in Tennessee, the same could be said for Munchak. What should I be feeling positive about this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

The additions. The offense has a lot of talent. If Locker can be average, the offense can be good. Dowell Loggains is a good, young mind. That's what I'd be excited and hopeful about.

Jeremy (Shelbyville)

How did you do in Midday 180 draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Not bad. Richardson, Ridley, Andre Johnson, James Jones, DeSean Jackson, Luck.

Alex (Indy)

Can both Fleener and Allen be a big part of the Colts' offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

Sure. But numbers-wise, they will water each other down, I would think.

David (Rancho Santa Margarita)

How loose/tight is the chain on CJ knowing that if he doesn't perform, Munchack could just put in Greene instead?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

They aren't thinking like that at all. They are thinking Greene is a nice supplement. At times they'll ride the hot hand. But CJ is very much the lead guy.

Tim (TN)

PK who do you think the Titans will have as inactive Sunday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

My guess: Gooden (hurt), Preston, Dawson, Edwards, Schwenke, Battle. Hard from there. Stingily and Wreh-Wilson, perhaps.

jacob (class)

you like James Jones this week

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

I like him every week.

Rishi (Syracuse, NY)

As a die hard Titans fan it's hard to believe so many critics and skeptics are against a run first type of team. How far do you think the Titans can go this year if healthy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Best-case scenario: Last wild card at 9-7.

Rishi (Syracuse, NY)

If the Titans fail to produce a winning season this year who do you think will be the first to go, Mike Munchak or Jake Locker? Which of the two has more pressure going into week one to produce a win for this team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

Munchak. You don't toss away a first-round QB after the end of his third season. If you're done with him you find out just before the start of his fourth. Coaches get fired in January. Players under contract typically get fired in early September.

Atticus (Dallas)

..............Is Walt going to use the Ricin on Jesse?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

I think Jesse and Walt will be resolved before Walt gets to the electrical socket.

Matt (KY)

Does @ESPNGreeny not realize that Luck has a different OC this season? I'm hoping his TD/INT numbers are better this year, but I expect the gross yardage to be down. What are your statistical expectations for Luck this season? #kod

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

I think he will be very strong. I didn't hesitate to wait a long time on QBs in my two drafts and take him later.

NK (Queens NY)

Paul i have a question. For fantasy, do you think it would be better to put in a semi-injured Wes Welker? or a healthy Pierre Garcon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

I don't want to be on the hook for your fantasy decisions. I've never won a football league. I'd play Welker if he's playing.

John (Nashville)

Does CJ break 2,000 yds this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

Not close. They didn't pay Shonn Greene big dollars to come in for zero carries. He will get more carries than any second back on the team has had since CJ went for 2,000. CJ won't get enough carries for 2,000.

Otto (CA)

What do you think of Greg Roman? Will he get a head coaching job after this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

He's got a great reputation. I wonder about a hot assistant offensive coach who works under a very good offensive head coach. Same, generally, for defensive guys under defensive head coaches. How much is Roman a product of Harbaugh?

hg (obky)

You and CJ2K good after the little twitter jousting last night?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

Would expect so. Will make a pass today in the locker room.

Tom de Bomb (Utah)

How do you feel about the defending Super Bowl champs playing on the road to start the season because the city's baseball team will not adjust their schedule?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Good for the Orioles. Why do they have to change things to accommodate the Ravens?

Shawn (Honolulu, HI)

Aloha Paul, Other than the two glaring weaknesses on the Jags (QB and DE) how does the rest of the starting roster look. I'm sure depth is a major issue as well.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

They've got weak spots. Rackley is a concern. The OLBs are a concern. Youth in the secondary is a concern. Unproven TE depth is a concern.

Carlisle (Montreal)

Why did it take Sports Illustrated to give us a better glimpse of CJ, his personality, what his teammates think of him and what coaches think of him? You and Jim Wyatt have covered him for years all we've heard about is him wanting to rush for 2,000.The broad strokes you gave us was a selfish player.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

It's a fair question. I don't know if he would have offered all of that up to a guy he deals with regularly as opposed to someone like Shipnuck. I don't think I've painted him entirely as selfish. I spell out my issue in the bottom of the post I did off of the SI story. And I don't think CJ is quite as glowing as the piece made him look. It's somewhere in the middle. We'll discuss the piece with the author on The Midday 180 at 12:20 CT.

Thomas (Raleigh)

What's your projection for Britt's line at the end of the year. Can he hold value as WR3?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

I don't project stat lines for games or seasons, sorry. It's called guessing. And I'm not a good guesser or in the guessing business.

Jeremy (Shelbyville)

Does the recent statements that Foku is the starter for the year leave Collin Mcarthy without a job next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

He needs to worry about staying healthy to do his job this year.

Tom (GA)

Why do the Orioles have to change things? How about the Ravens won the Super Bowl? Would think a city's pro sports teams would support each other

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

Think the Ravens would have moved a game for the Orioles?

Jeremy (Shelbyville)

Titans thin at LB. Do you see them picking somebody up or will somebody have to be injured and a no go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

They won't pick anybody up if they haven't already. At least not this week. Ayers, Fokou, Brown all good to go with Bailey and McCarthy as the depth.

Casey (Los Angeles)

You a fan of Jurrell Casey's nonchalant "Yeah, we're gonna win. So what?" attitude?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

I'm a fan of Jurrell Casey, period.

RH (Taco Truck on Nolansville)

Hey Paul, out of curiosity how many of your followers, Titans followers, do you think come beyond of the Mid State area? 5%, 10%? I think this would be a great poll question. I would be eager to know. Thanks and I love the blog.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

I just wrote it down and will try to do it. I suspect way more are in the Mid State: 60 or 75 percent.

Taylor (California)

At this point, Locker is still an unknown - good or bad. What's driving the narrative in the media for Locker? And why are so many media members hesitant to adopt the position that we don't know who Locker is yet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

Who's declaring we do know who he is? I've said all along I gave Gabbert three seasons and Locker gets the same. And I've found his preseason encouraging. Still, I question if he will panic and if he will be accurate.

Jerry (Nashville)

whats you're prediction for Sunday..Titans Or Steelers

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

It'll be in the Double Coverage post that publishes at 1:00 p.m. That's called a tease.

Atticus (Dallas)

You've clearly recently made a great effort to be wide open for the public to berate you with questions at all times (through various social media outlets). Not really a question - Just wanted to say thanks. We appreciate you being so available.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

It's the job, and I really do enjoy it. Though so times I simply have to retweet someone and let you all have at him.

Adam (Charleston )

Based on the collective opinions of you and you colleagues, and since we're talking about is so much, if Munchak is out in Jan. is Loggains favored to replace him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

I think Loggains is a very good coach. But if the Titans change coaches, it's time for the to go get an outside with no previous connection to the franchise.

Wes (Austin)

If Locker can refrain from making major mistakes, what does PITT have that would make this came close?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

Seriously? Um, let's start with Ben Roethlisberger, Dick LeBeau and a healthy Troy Polamalu.

Wes (Austin)

Besides Nate, do you think this offensive receiving core, inc TE, has enough of a rapport with Locker to be highly productive early considering their schedule?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

They should. They've all had plenty of time together.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Will Luck and Fleener take a step forward or backwards, with their former offensive coordinator at Stanford taking the same position in Indianapolis?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

Luck will stay on the curve he's on. He'll be excellent. If Fleener stays healthy, he will certainly take a step forward.

Brian (Jackson TN)

Can we expect to see CJ & Greene in many 2 back sets ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

Doubt it and hope not. it's a gimmick. One of them becomes useless once the ball is handed off.

matt (philadelphia)

So i got an issue in week one. I have cam newton and seahawks D (playing each other) And i got sam bradford on the bench. Should i start sam over cam or pick up a crapy D and start Cam?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

My fantasy rule: Play the guy you drafted to start. I'm guessing you drafted Cam high and Bradford not so high. Don't overthink matchups. Play your best guys.

Casey (Los Angeles)

Munchak seemed a little P O'd at Crush boy after his second personal foul penalty in the preseason. Then Pollard said he has his approach and that not all of the coaches may not agree with. Titans coaching staff still a fan of the patriot killer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

Every coach he's had has soured on Pollard. It's a fact. So it may not be a question of when, not if. But not yet.

Tom (GA)

Yes because comparing an 80 game home schedule of the Orioles is similar to an 8 game home schedule of the Ravens

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

The Orioles don't owe the Ravens anything. They explained their rationale, which was sound. I'm on their side.

Casey (Los Angeles)

What's your opinion of Bill Barnwell's "Nomentom" theory? (I think it's ridiculous.)

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

He proved it in a lot of ways. You'd expect a team that ties a game late to have momentum in overtime, right? They why doesn't that team win more often than not? A lot of momentum is narrative, not science, so to speak.

Josh (TN)

Do you feel Akeem Ayers is going to have a breakout season and possibly make it into the Defensive Top 100 after this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

If he doesn't, the Titans are in trouble.

Devin (Fan From Florida)

Hey Paul, big fan. Just wondering were Ahmad Bradshaw stands this season? Feel like his name has been left out in many RB conversations so far this year. Are the colts capable of utilizing his talent? OR better yet, is he capable? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

If his foot holds up, he's a heck of an addition. Great in the passing game too. A nice weapon. Been quiet because he missed the preseason.

Casey (Los Angeles)

Word on the street is that Justin Hunter is catching on. Do you concur?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

He has moments for sure. I think he'll get in for some specific plays and maybe some red zone chances. [UPDATE We may have to wait to see him because other injuries could mean Hunter is inactive.]

Jon (Abingdon, VA)

Since no one else is going to ask it, Who's the band you want us all to hear?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

The Wild Feathers. Start with "Ceiling."

Otto (CA)

Should the Raiders sign Tim Tebow or Brett Favre?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

No on Tebow. Adding a bad player doesn't help a bad team get better. And Favre isn't available.

Chris (Indianapolis)

Who's the best athletic player pound for pound in the division? In terms of running, jumping, and practical strength? Vontae, possibly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

Really good question. Just read the SI piece which has CJ with a 41 inch vertical after nearly 7,000 yards and still running sub 4.3. Ain't weak, either. He'd be a contender.

frank (milwaukke)

hey paul! late to the chat here, so I don't know if this was asked yet...but do you think it might be possible to see some looks with greene at fullback, maybe a full house with him c.j and walker all in the backfield?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

I never understand the obsession with a big running back cast as a fullback. Greene's a runner more than a blocker. And if they have a blocking back, why not use him in that role? Two tailbacks on the field doesn't create defensive mystery. The D sees which one the ball is handed to and chases that guy.

NYCTitan (NYC)

Who is the number one WR for the Titans: Britt or Washington?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

Britt.

Otto (CA)

Are the Titans using Delanie Walker like a traditional TE or are they going to move him around like the 49ers did?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Going to move him around more than the 49ers did. He's Frank Wycheck.

Marcus (San Diego)

Where do you think Vince Young could go to?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

Canada.

Jeff (Boston)

Delanie Walker worth drafting in your opinion? Is he going to be an offensive focal point?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

Yes. If you don't get Jimmy Graham, I'd wait til way late on tight end and draft someone like Dwayne Allen, Coby Fleener or Walker late.

Walter White (New Mexico)

Want a cigarette?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

Pass.

Jeff (Boston)

Hey Paul, How many carries a game do you expect CJ to see? Or maybe a better way of asking this, what do you see as the split between CJ and SG? 80/20?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

I think CJ gets between 70 and 80 percent of the carries.

Casey (Los Angeles)

I know you think the Titans let go of Britt after this season, but if Britt breaks out with probowl-esque stats. How can they let go of the first legit number on receiver they've had in almost decade. A receiver who can win against a team's best corner is rare and is hard to find no matter who you think you have behind him. i.e. Look at how the packers pursued Jennings.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

They can let him go because Wright and Hunter can step in.

Frank Wycheck (Morning Radio Show)

Awww, thanks for the comment Paul. Mind going on record so I can replay it every morning?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

You'll use it with or without my permission.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Will Pittsburgh's offensive line be able to keep Big Ben upright and healthy enough for the Steelers to make the playoffs this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

Their line should be a lot better.

frank (milwaukee)

i got delanie walker in the last round of my fantasy draft. bad pick? everyone's been telling me so but he won't start much i got tony gonzo as my other TE

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

Won't start? Who are these people advising you? He is their primary TE and they will look to him a lot.

AB (FL)

I'm a big Titans fan who is very worried about the run defense. Do you think that it's a chemistry problem (missing Brown & Ayers) or are the Titans in serious trouble?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

I need to see them stop it before I'm convinced they can stop it.

Reed (Nashville)

I know you hate hypotheticals Paul but, if the Titans have a losing record and let go of Munchak do you see Bud Adams opening the bank up for a high quality coach, or will we be stuck with another assistant that has a HC title?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

I think, if he's in good enough health, he'd chase a splashy name.

Rick (Ohio)

Since 1990 no less than 4 new teams make the playoffs, but since 200, that average has been 7 teams. Which 4-7 playoff teams from last year will miss out this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:00 PM)

I think it'll be a year where a lot of teams do go back. I think teams like Arizona and Cleveland will make big gains, but not big enough to get into the playoffs.

Jeff (Houston)

Did the Texans goof with signing Ed Reed? especially in the wake of his injury

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

You can't judge it now, before they played a game.

Matt (Joplin, MO)

Hey Paul, what are your realistic expectations of the Dolphins this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:03 PM)

I think they are average.
