Chat with Bill Williamson

Stephon (Greensboro NC)

Bill,Do you think the 49ers will limit Pat Willis' snaps on sunday(due to the broken hand)? The last time the 9ers played the packers, they played a lot of nickel and dime coverage on defense and Navarro got a lot of reps. Will they add to Navarro's workload?

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hi everyone, let's get rolling.I think they could. But Willis will get his reps. Saw him yesterday and he is raring to go. But conditiining is not a problem after not playing all preseason, I can see him having a huge role.

Jackson Marsten (Olympic Valley, Ca)

With Patrick Peterson, Tavon Austin and (eventually) Percy Harvin in the division, how do the 49ers coverage teams look? Are coverage teams even prognosticatable?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

I think they are a work in progress for every team early in the season. However, sicne most coverage teams are built with backups, the 49ers could be in good shape because they have such a deep roster.

Niles (Seattle)

How many rushing yard will the Niners get against Green Bay? I see Gore well over 100 then the other guys (Kaep included) combining for at least another 100.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Definitely going to be a focal point for both teams. With the Packers so focused on not letting Kaepernick gut them, perhaps the 49ers can give them a huge dose of Gore. With Gore going, it would setup Kaepernick for some big plays, whether the Packers are zoning in on him or not.

Dan Matteson (Wash DC)

Welcome Bill, My main concern going into the home opener is the secondary. Im worried about getting beat deep. Do you see more nickle with Willis off the field like last year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

Thank you, if there is a worry area in this game, it is the secondary. Reid is making his debut and there is flux at CB. And there is the presence of Aaron Rodgers. I think the Packers will have their moments. But that's why the 49ers' apss rush is so vital.

Scott (Rochester, NY)

Your Division switch is like going from worst to first, congrats!!

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

We'll see. Hope I'm not bad luck.

Steve (Orlando)

Do you think it's a good idea for the QB to kiss his biceps after a play? Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

I don't have a big problem with it. You?

Josh Kinney (St. Louis, MO)

Do you think Colin Kaepernick will show progressthis year and becomes an even better QB or will he regress and look like more of an average QB?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

I'm a big Kaepernick believer. I think he will be special. Maybe not every game will be brilliant, but, yes, i expect a huge year.

Aaron (Des Moines, IA)

Welcome, Bill. I read your article on "targeting Kap" and I just hope it doesn't ruin a potential great game with a ton of flags. Do you see the officials being prepared for this and handling it well or do you foresee a lot of questionable calls?

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

There may be some chippiness because of the rivalry and how improtant this is for a Week 1 game. But there will be a good flow here. I don't expect it to get out of control.

AL (SoCal)

Do you think Kendall Hunter is back to full strength and ready to go? I think his health is vital this year as Gore is another year older and LMJ is currently hurt.

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I think Hunter will be a big part of the passing game with Crabtree and Manningham out. Having a weapon out of the backfield is crucial.

Heath (Stockton, CA)

Is there any concern about Kaep fumbling when running with the ball? He doesn't seem to tuck it away very well.

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

It's all part of his growing process.

James (England)

Which team in the NFC west is the best coached?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

One of the reasons why this division has improved so greatly is the coaching. Arians is a newbie, but he had a nice start in Indy last year. The other three are all terrific.

Scott (Rochester, NY)

Do you forsee Kaep getting over his issues with getting out of the huddle and a play called on time this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

Like fumbling, just part of his process.

durf786 (Denver)

Welcome, Bill. Do you think Bash-a-Kaep is going to be an issue this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

If the Packers get a way with it Sunday, yes. Copy-cay league.

Heath (Stockton, CA)

Do you see Patton getting more snaps than Moore in this game? What do the 49ers see in Moore as a WR that makes them think he is a starting WR?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

This game is going to be a feeling-out process for everyone involved from a receiver aspect. But I have a feeling Patton will get plenty of opportunities.

Aaron (Des Moines, IA)

Unless I have missed it somewhere - I haven't seen your thoughts on the division standings this year. Who do you see taking the division?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Well, we never did a full division prediction.I predicted the 49ers going to Super Bowl and Seattle being a wild card.So how about:3. St. louis4. Arizona.Good division. No easy games.

Chex Norris (San Diego)

Better career Kap or Wilson?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Could be a Elway or Marino thing. It is going to be wild watching these guys go at it for the next dozen years. One of the reasons why I'm so excited about my switch.

Brian (Pleasanton)

How has Kyle Williams looked at practice? Do you think he can be the deep threat we need.

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

He has his role. I think he is more of a complementary guy, but he can help.

Derek (Marquette, MI)

Lot of nervous Packer fans around my parts about their O-line issues. What do you see playing out?

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

They should be. Gave up 51 sacks last year, two inexperienced tackles and a great pass-rush defense. It's an issue.

Chex Norris (San Diego)

More catches on Sunday VD or Anquan? Who ends up leading in receptions for the season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Great question. I'd say Boldin on both but reserve right to change. Davis needs to have a big year. More on that coming on the blog.

Scott (Rochester, NY)

Score prediction for Niners vs. Packers?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Coming Friday.

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Talk to you next week. See you on the blog.Happy Week 1.
