Hey everyone! Thanks for joining me on a Friday!
Stunned by the Karlos Williams move to RB. Was excited for FSU to finally have a Sean Taylor, Ed Reed type safety. What's the story here?
I was a little surprised, too, Matt, considering he was expected to start this year. I just think he's been passed at safety and can be more useful this year at RB given some of the depth concerns that are showing with Mario Pender being ineligible. I guess we'll have to see how it goes.
Andrea, based on what you've seen of the 'Big Three' in the sunshine state week one, who do you think will have bragging rights for in-state supremacy since it's one of the rare years UM/UF/FSU all play each other? I posed the same question to Heather last week b4 week one action began and she picked Miami. I'm a huge FSU fan and admittedly smitten on the Winston kool aid. Visiting the Swamp will be daunting end-season, but I think FSU will be state champs. Hmmm, better yet- do you think the Noles will break their long losing streak at Clemson in Oct? Imagine the build up to that game if both QBs continue their magic?
Hey Mike, it is way, way, way too early to be making predictions on that, but I am pretty sure it will either be Florida State or Florida. The Gators have the home-field but the Noles have the better quarterback. Even after one game. But so much can happen between now and then it is too premature to guess. I have no idea who is even going to be playing in that game. As for FSU-Clemson, I still give the edge to the Tigers because it's at home and FSU has had trouble there. I would still also give the edge at QB to Boyd.
Hi AA, i know it's WAY too early to predict how good Winston will end up being after just one game. My question is hypothetical, if he has solid performances the rest of the way and continues to have outstanding games leading all the way up to Clemson what are the chances that Fsu gives Clemson all they can handle? Thanks.
I thought FSU would give Clemson all it could handle even before we saw Winston's performance. These two teams are too evenly matched for it to be a blowout, in my opinion. It's going to be another great game just like the one we saw between Clemson and Georgia.
To stay competitive and have a chance to win against Oregon, Virginia needs to . . . .?
Kidnap Marcus Mariota and De'Anthony Thomas? OK, just kidding. Obviously they are going to have to be way, way more physical and control the line of scrimmage. They will have to establish the run and play ball control. No turnovers, no special teams mistakes. Force a lot of 3 and outs. I honestly think one of the only ways to beat a team like this is to keep punching 'em in the mouth so to speak.
How many loses do you think FSU will have at the end of the year.
No more than two.
Andrea, with the first week of game play behind for all of college football, what are your thoughts thus far for strength of the ACC? FSU , Clemson, and Miami played well and VaTech showed some signs of life. With Louisville coming on board next year I think the ACC is finally climbing out of the slum of mediocrity.
Well it's certainly encouraging that Florida State and Clemson played so well in Week 1. What's been missing out of the ACC is a true national championship contender. If Florida State and Clemson can keep it up, the ACC will have one this year. I think that's what will change people's perceptions, not a 9-3 Va Tech or 9-3 Miami team. Gotta have one run the table, along with 4-5 ranked teams.
What do you think of the Demon Deacons chances against BC tonight? Tough to tell what both teams are about given week 1 weak opponents.
I picked Wake Forest so I like their chances. Both played bad opponents, but I watched their games and thought BC had more flaws on defense than Wake at this point. That is where I give Wake the edge, based on the defensive performance from a week ago. Not sure either team will have much in the way of offensive fireworks this year but Wake does get Camp back this week and that is a huge plus, too.
I'm not sure of Clemson's defense and really I think its an issue as they still have to play FSU and SC. They got lucky in the GA game with the field goal snap. Clemson looks like they only have an offense. What do you think about Clemson defense? Do you think they can beat teams that have both a good offense and defense?
Hey they won the game, luck or no luck. The ball has to bounce your way to win games like that. Obviously there is a lot Clemson can do better defensively. Remember, Georgia is an extremely talented team with a terrific QB and great RBs. You knew the Dawgs were going to score their share of points. I wouldn't say Clemson's D is on the same level as VT at this point, but the secondary should get better as the young players improve. I like the potential on the defensive front as well.
Andrea, of the predicted bottom few teams in both divisions, which teams do you think HAVE to get to a bowl to have what is considered a successful season? Which teams do you think have no chance at going to a bowl?
I think UVa needs to get to a bowl. I don't think BC has a chance at getting to a bowl.
Do you see a low scoring game tonight in Beantown?
I do, Pete. Wasn't overly impressed with either offense last week. Wake might have a chance to put up some points with Campanaro back vs. a so-so defense, but I don't think it will be a 45-41 game by any stretch.
I know you are a professional, but as a UF grad isn't it a little hard to follow FSU? Have you had that moment where you found yourself rooting for the Noles and questioned yourself?
I don't root for anybody, JP. Even when I went to UF, I did not root for the Gators. I started out as a student journalist and worked in the press box for most of my college career, where cheering is not allowed. Didn't own one piece of Gator gear. So it's not hard. It's all I've ever done, quite honestly. Call me Switzerland.
Sent you a question last week about Clemson's new center Ryan Norton and how he would do replacing 3 year starter Dalton Freeman. Guess he did OK.
I figured he would, heard nothing but good things about him leading up to the game.
Ok I have to ask, Michigan or Notre Dame? Is the hubby upset this annual game is ending? You can answer this last...gotta get all the ACC questions in! :) GBR!
Hey a hubby question! Going with Michigan in the game, and yes he is very upset the rivalry is ending as I'm sure a lot of people are! In Devin Gardner Michigan fans trust.
What's going on down there this year with Jim Grobe and Wake Forest? They going bowling?
We do have them bowling, Keith.
Can Miami Compete abd jump into National Championship picture?
I don't think they are ready for that yet, Chuck. Just don't think they are good enough defensively, and are lacking depth at some key positions.
Is this the year the ACC as a conference takes the next step? The conference as a whole keeps putting too many players into the NFL year in and year out to stay so mediocre. Or do we hope 2014 brings better feelings
By the next step do you mean stay in the national championship discussion until November? At the risk of being naive, I am going to say yes I think there is a very real chance the ACC stays relevant beyond October. Very impressed with both Clemson and Florida State to start.
As good as Clemson played, Georgia defense isn't top 5, I think my Seminoles will be a challenge for the tigers.
Absolutely, Todd. I don't think there's a doubt about that.
So Switzerland, how do you think NC State will fare without their first choice at QB?
Well, I feel bad for Brandon Mitchell. He looked like he had an incredible grasp and knowledge of the offense and that he was a true leader out there. Pete Thomas looked good, but not nearly as good as Mitchell. So how will they fare? The early part of the schedule plays out nicely for the Pack. I think they would have had a hard time vs. Clemson no matter who started at QB. But I still think they have a real shot at 5-1 with Thomas starting. The toss up to me is Wake.
Ok since you are picking out of conference games, who do you have in the SCAR - UGA game? Is there a way we could have them both lose?
Hard to go against Spurrier vs. Georgia, quite honestly. He dislikes them like no other. More than Clemson.
Andrea, are you driniking the Winston Kool-Aid that much after his performance against a soft Pittsburgh team to say no more than two losses? Don't get me wrong, the kd's a stud. But I think his learning curve will be a little steeper than that. And I"m sure you'll let me know if it isn't. :)
Tony, I was impressed. I am sorry but it is not often you see a QB account for 5 TDs and two incompletions, no matter the skill level of the defense. I mean guys don't have games like that vs. Akron, etc. But aside from the gaudy numbers, I was impressed with his poise and demeanor. He did not look scared, nervous or flustered out there. He always looked like he was in control. Hard to find that out of seniors, let alone redshirt freshmen. It was only one game, but it was a heck of a game if you ask me.
No question, just Jameis. Jameis all the time.
How far do you think Georgia Tech will go this year?
Well I don't think we can read too much into what happened vs. Elon. Still, I think Georgia Tech is a legitimate contender to win the Coastal Division. If the Jackets can survive this tough opening stretch they will be in great shape.
How many points are the Gators going to win by tomorrow? Go Gators!!!
I predicted six but I won't be surprised if it's more.
Does Duke Johnson have a shot at the Heisman?
I think what happens this weekend vs. Florida will dictate whether he has a legitimate chance at the Heisman. Racking up 100 yard games vs. power puffs is one thing. A strong performance against a top D like Florida is quite another. I am very interested to see how he does.
Name one area that Virginia has an edge against Oregon....if there is one.
Home field? Not trying to be flip, but Oregon has the edge everywhere. Ducks are no slouches on D, either. I know a lot of people focus on the offense, but their defense is great, too.
Which games will you and HD be reporting from this weekend?
I will be at Florida vs. Miami and HD will be at Oregon vs. Virginia.
What do you view as FSU's biggest weakness?
I am not going to call it a weakness, but going into the next game I want to see more production out of the defensive front. FSU got most of its pressure on the QB last week with its blitzes. Stark contrast to a year ago. Lots of new, young guys up front so I want to see them grow from one week to the next.
Do you think Tajh Boyd and Clmeson could be peaking too early? It seems like it might be better to get the Heisman and National Championship hype growing more toward the end of the season. But I guess as long as Clemson keeps winning, everything else will work itself out, right?
I don't think there's such a thing as peaking too early. Clemson put itself on the national map in Week 1. When was the last time that happened? That is huge for Clemson and the ACC.
What draws you to the college game? I personally think it look slow and I rather watch the best of the best and they play on Sundays and not Saturdays.
I like both, Brice, to be honest. But in the college game there is more passion, pageantry, cool game-day traditions and overall traditions. Yeah a lot of matchups are lopsided, but I still think it is a fun game to watch regardless.
Did you fall out of your chair watching Nick O'Leary make, not one, but two plays, touchdown plays at that, on Monday Night? Is this a positive sign the highly touted TE can/will indeed produce at this position for FSU? The Seminoles certainly need it given their lack of depth at the position?
I fell out of my chair rewatching the video of him getting tossed into the air in his motorcycle accident. Good heavens, I still have no idea how he walked away from that! But anyway, his performance certainly turned some heads and I think he is ready to be a true threat for the Noles. He certainly seemed that way vs. Pitt.
Who steps up for the Tigers, Bryant or Peake?
I will go with Peake. Bryant has got to do a much better job of catching the ball. Those drops last week were unacceptable.
There's not a single team currently ranked on Duke's schedule. What are they odds they find five more wins and go bowling again?
I could go either way with Duke. Some days I can totally see the Blue Devils with 6-7 wins; other days I can see them with no more than five. They have a shot at 4-0 noncon, but I think the Navy game is going to be a toss up. Navy should be pretty decent this year. If they can beat Navy, I can see two league wins. Three league wins is not going to be as easy, in my opinion.
No disrespect meant at all by the what draws you to college football question at all. I just find myself having a hard time getting into it while I cant wait till NFL football to start each week.
None taken. Although last night's game ended up being pretty lopsided in the end!
Hi Andrea.Do you think the winner of the wake forest boston college game will win the acc championship in December?
Is this a trick question?
Does Logan Thomas have any legit threats at WR at his disposal this season? I know it wasn't all the Alabama D, right?
I honestly do not think he does. I talked to an NFL scout the other day who lamented the state of that WR group because they are weighing Thomas down. Those drops couldn't all be attributed to the Bama D. There were bad drops last year, too.
Who ya got, Mayweather or Alvarez?
What Victor meant to say was if the loser of Wake Forest-Boston College would win the ACC Title of Worst Team in the conference this Decemebr?
What does FSU need to accomplish this year for them to be able to say they are officially "back?"
Well here is my question to you all on the chat. Will people consider FSU back if the Noles win 10 games for a second straight year but don't win the ACC? Or will the Noles only considered "back" if they are in the national conversation every single year? What do you all think?
Your right it did end up being lopsided lol, That being said it sure was pretty watching that Denver offense opperate but on the other hand that Ravens D looked lost so I will temper my excitment about the Broncos offense until we see a little more!
Big holes without Lewis and Reed for sure.
When will Winston be eligible for the MLB draft again?
After his junior season.
If Maryland enters the game undefeated against FSU, do you see the spread being 7 or less?
Terps are a better team this year but I am going to say no on that one. Maryland just doesn't play anybody good nonconference.
And that includes West Virginia. Boy, that program has taken a tumble in just two years.
The ladder... Bobby Bowden set a high standard that Fisher may never come close too.
Is Ronald Darby suitng up this week for the Noles?
Noles are off this week.
More disappointing last week, Va Tech's Demertiri Knowles or Martavious Bryant from Clemson?
Knowles, in my opinion.
Is there a huge gap between Stefon Diggs and Sammy Watkins? I say no. What say you?
No. We had them both ranked in our Top 4 ACC players countdown -- Watkins at No. 2 and Diggs at No. 4.
FSU's 14 consecutive years in the top five; I don't know if anyone can do that again.
That is why I wonder what standards people will use to classify Florida State as "back."
whats miamis record at the end of the season
Is the Florida-Miami game only slightly less important than the Georgia-Clemson clash for the ACC? Back to back victories for the conference over the SEC would be huge for this season and moving forward?
It is less important, only because nobody really expects Miami to be a national championship contender/flag bearer for the league. Everybody expected that out of Clemson. More pressure on the Tigers. If Miami loses, well, the ACC still has two Top 10 teams. Not bad after two weeks.
I will ask a college question, Do you think University of Colorado will be relavent again anytime soon in your opinion? And by soon I am talking 3-5 years.
Good question, Brice. I am not really close enough to the program to give you an educated answer. I did follow Mike MacIntyre at San Jose State and know he did an incredible job turning the program around there. I do have a lot of respect for him. And they did just beat Colorado State so that is a good start!
Who has your vote as the top defender in the ACC?
Great question, Jeff. HD and I had Attaochu, Joyner and Donald in our preseason Top 10 players list. I don't think there is a clear top defender at this point the way there was last year, though. I'm going to keep an eye on those three fellas, along with James Gayle and Jack Tyler at Virginia Tech.
How many different ACC teams do you think crack the top 25 this season?
At the same time or total?
Hmm ... going with between 5-6. At different points. Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, Maryland (for only one week after a 4-0 start). Toss up for me is UNC/Va Tech. I can't decide.
Hey Andrea!! ..wanted to say keep up the great work here..love you're insights. If FSU makes it past CU, miami..and uf..and remains undefeated in the regular season, wins the ACCCG..are they a strong probably..for the NCG??
Thanks, Jamie! Is this a bit of Winston optimism I'm detecting ;) I guess it all depends on what happens around the Noles. They should have a strong enough strength of schedule to land them in the conversation but I do not think that means they would land ahead of an unbeaten SEC team. It would be interesting to see how an undefeated ACC team would be judged vs. an undefeated Pac-12 (Stanford or Oregon) or undefeated Big Ten (Ohio State or Michigan). Considering most of those teams are already ahead of FSU in the human polls, I wonder whether the Noles would leapfrog them down the stretch.
How do you see the Tar Heels rebounding from being dominated by the Gamecocks? Does Fedora get UNC to nine regular season wins?
I can see somewhere between 8-9 wins. The Coastal is so wide open with teams that are bunched so close together, I think most matchups are going to be toss ups this year. They won't play anybody as good as South Carolina in their division.
Why do you think it hasn't been discussed that Nicky Saban is stockpiling former Clemson coaches (Chris Rumph, Billy Napier, Kevin Steele)?
What should be discussed?
Any chance Eli Harold gets into the ACC defensive POTY discussion?
Good question, Steve. As I mentioned earlier, I think that award is way more up for grabs than the offensive award, where we already know who the playmakers are. I want to see how he plays vs. this Oregon offense. Going to be a big challenge not just for him but for his teammates as well.
Will the NCAA ever make a decision on Miami. It's crazy how this cloud is over them. Do you think they are banned when a decision is made?
They will make a decision. I just have no idea when, and neither do the people in Miami. They all thought they would have an answer before the season. It is just completely ridiculous there is no closure yet. Ridiculous!
How much impact do you think Notre Dame joining the ACC will have on recruiting? Especially, in the midwestern part of the country.
Still think the bread and butter recruiting area is the south. Not sure ND joining will impact recruiting in that way.
OK guys, thanks for joining me on a Friday afternoon. I am sure you are all eager to get going with your weekend. Have a great one, and enjoy your games! I will check in with you all from Miami, and Heather from Charlottesville tomorrow.
