Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf!! Web.com Tour Finals Series second event is happening, you like it? Walker Cup happening. And of course the NFL. Give me some Tour pros and their positions if they played football!! BRING IT....

Chuck (Cold Spring Harbor, NY)

Heading to the Walker Cup tomorrow. I know Kim, Weaver, and Fitzpatrick. Any other guys of note that I should pay special interest?

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

DEFINITELY watch Rhys Pugh. Kid won the 2012 European Amateur and made the cut at the Open this past year, also was on the winning team last Walker Cup in 2011

Alex (Portland)

Where did you start out as a caddie? I've done country club caddying for a few years now and am thinking about moving up to the pro ranks...Caddying also seems like a "friend of a friend is a golfer" or a family member is a golfer so I'll carry for them type of business and that's how to get started.

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

How I got my start... http://espn.go.com/golf/story/_/id/9627594/michael-collins-unlikely-journey-pro-caddying-golf

Cody (Office)

Always a great way to start the weekend. What do you think about the Pres. Cup Picks? I got the Int. team picks right...missed an American pick

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

Easy to see both sides. I got them all right. Makes sense both ways. Love the picks (and not because I picked them early)

Cody (Office)

How about a Angel vs Duffy in Singles?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Cigs vs. Dip! I love it!!

Al (Pensacola)

Hi Mike, really enjoy your chats. Who picks up caddie expenses at the Presidents Cup - player or PGA Tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

It is one event where the PGA Tour pays the caddie and all expenses

Rory (Not McIlroy) (Athens)

Loved your article today. I would much rather be insulted on the course by you, ESPN's funny man, than my inebriated golf buddies.

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Did I insult you on the course?

Tom (Illinois)

MC, will the caddy of the winner of the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs get any portion of the $10M prize?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Most caddies get a percentage from their players. Don't forget EVERYONE who makes the FedEx Cup Playoffs gets a bonus, not just the $10 million dollar winner.

Ed (Long Island)

Other than making the non-American, non European players not feel left out by not having a team concept, what is the purpose of the PC? Seems it is forced/contrived event that will never really get legs.

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

I think the winner should play Ryder Cup or flip flop yearly, the it would mean more.

AJ (Chicago)

Why do people not realize its player of the YEAR?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

Because our society is so much "right now"

Josh (Seattle)

Does Luke Donald have the game and/or confidence to ever retake the World number 1 ranking?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

It's not the game or confidence, it's the guys he's gotta pass and beat. I don't see him getting back to #1 but I loved it when he was there

Tom (Illinois)

Hey MC, Loved reading your story about how you became involved with caddying. Once you started, what was the learning process like - how long did it take before you felt that you had acquired the knowledge to be a full-time caddy?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Thanks Tom. I was comfortable after about 10 events. But it's because I went to caddies and guys would come take me under their wings because they wanted me to succeed. Then when Chris Couch asked me to be his full time caddie I knew I was good.

John (Chicago)

Luke Donald has been practicing hard for a good showing at his home course. How do you like his chances at BMW

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

It's REALLY hard to play well at home because you tend to put SO much extra pressure on yourself. Don't know that he can win but I think he may get a top 20

Ed (Long Island)

Caddies in the HOF...a bit of a reach don't you think? Should the strength and conditioning coaches be put in the HOF in football and baseball? Caddies do serve a vital purpose, but no caddy is taking a journeyman player to elite status.

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Rich Beem exhibit A. Steve Duplantis as his caddie. Look it up. And do strength coaches go on the field and tell the QB where to throw? Pretend that caddies are IN THE GAME, because they are.

Nelson (DE)

How are the caddie hospitality venues in a President's Cup different from other Tour events, majors, Ryder Cup?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Well at Presidents Cup it's a team venue so the rooms are for the whole teams and caddies are included almost like players.

Joe (Austin)

How many wins does Phil get if he doesnt have Bones on the bag throughout his career?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Maybe half. Imagine Phil has a different caddie, asks him for a read or advice and it's wrong. The whole trust thing is destroyed and then where do you go from there? If that happens in the beginning, it's almost impossible to get it back.

Caroline W. (Manhattan (shopping!))

Did you see Rors and I rocking matching pink outfits! So cute! And the shopping...oh, it's every girl's dream! Rors doesn't need to sort out his game, does he? Am I strong arming him into wearing pink shirts and spending a day shoooppppiiinnnnggg in lieu of working on his craft? Or is he really this wrapped around my finger?

Kevin (Belfast)

Rory was spotted wearing matching pink outfits with his girlfriend. They were shopping for trendy designer brands in NY. Michael, you're the comedian -- is this a joke? Come back to us, Rory!

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

You work seven days a week? You ever have a girl you'd do that for on your day off? Calm down man. Maybe not what you wanna see but you wouldn't watch him practice all day either... life needs balance, let him find some.

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

Let me google the pics

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Not as bad as I thought. I've seen couples wearing LITERALLY the same outfit on walking around public places. And Rory's shirt isn't even hot pink!

Gary (Indiana)

Does Dustin Johnson move into first place for hottest wife on tour now?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

Maybe top ten, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... what I think is hot you may say NOT

Tim (SF)

In 5 years, the 2018 leading money winner on tour will be: A. A current <25 y/o tour member (not named Rors), B. A current big name star not named Tiger, C. Tiger, D. Someone we don't know yet?

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama. Mark my words!!!

Kyle (Toronto)

When will Merion and Oak Hill each get another major?

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Merion, never. Oak Hill maybe in 10 years or so

Tim (SF)

Wassup MC? You need to get out here so we can go play Harding Park! Anyhow, give us your take what the Mechanic said about the kid invited to play in the Euro Masters...I have to say, and I admit to having to young sons, that I agree. There is something not quite right about putting the kids in that position, regardless of their talent level.

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

I did play Harding Park the week the US Open was at Olympic, but I'd play again if you're paying! ;)I'm a hypocrite because I don't like seeing young boys playing against men, but a player like Lydia Ko I think can hang against grown women.

Mike (Illinois)

Do you belong to any golf clubs?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Nope

Jefe (MN)

What's your going rate for caddy services? Got an important Men's club tourney down at the muni and need someone for the loop. Going bowling after....drinks on me.....hmmmmmm?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

$1500 for the week plus expenses and 8% for all money won. Can you afford me?

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Hey Michael, Just checking on how the shouder was? Are you going to start having to do the Shake-weight for Rehab?

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

BAAHAHA!! My shoulder will NEVER be that bad. Does feel a bit better though thanks for asking.

Ankeet (Saginaw)

IMO, tiger is the clear cut favorite to win POY.... Luke won in 2011 with only 2 wins and no majors... No one said a word then even though Keegan had a major plus a weak field event... I think tiger deserves it more this year than Luke did in 2011... Your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

If Phil or Adam win the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup then they are the POY, if not Tiger gets it.

Tim (SF)

When will the west coast get a FEDEX cup playoff event?!?! no rain, no thunder, sun every day...seems a no brainer? TV audience the issue with a late west coast finish? Not gonna compete with NFL Sunday nights maybe?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

It does but the cross country travel would be an issue, I would love to see the west coast get a playoff event but I don't see it happening.

Josh (Seattle)

loved the piece with your boys picking the Open Championship winner (i think it was the O.C.). Anyways, youre great because youre real down to earth, and fun, and very knowledgeable. Thanks for keeping my lunch hour informative and entertaining!

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

My pleasure, thanks for hanging.

Tony (Minneapolis)

John Daly for nose tackle, Tiger at safety, and DJ at QB?

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

I did a video... Offense, Defense, and coach! Should post later today!!

Carl (Santa Fe)

Mandatory loss of man points for Rory. Don't even care about the excuse / reason. Just...wow.

Joe (Texas)

West coast doesnt get it because they have all the winter events when the east coast cant have them...

John (Mile High)

BMW is at Cherry Hills next year. About as West they are going to get, I'm afraid.

Sean (NJ)

to the guy who posted about strength/conditioning coaches not in the HOF. agreed, but caddies are much more like a coach, or manager in baseball, than a strength/conditioning coach. most guys have strength coaches, you've just never heard of them

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

Any coaches or managers in the HOF? Tell me again what the NFL Championship trophy is called? And who did he tackle?

Mike (Georgia)

Does Kuchar have the killer instinct to win a major?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

Yes. But he's gotta have a firm fast course

TedBell (SF)

MC, in 25 years when it's all said and done, who will have had a better career - Rory or Jordan Spieth?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

If both are healthy for their careers... McIlroy but it's close

Keith H (Seattle)

Speaking of caddies for the Hall of Fame, I would start with Bruce Edwards.

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Start with Eddie Lowery, but it honestly doesn't matter who goes first. Point is, caddies deserve a place. It's the World GOLF Hall of Fame. Not World GOLFERS HOF

Cody (Office)

Replying to Tim....So you really don't think Tiger will be the Money leader in 2018? Can I have a reason

Gary (Indiana)

So you're telling me that Paulina is not top 5 on tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

Not what I said.

Josh (Seattle)

What ball do you use when you golf? What is the predominant ball used on tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

I play a Titleist ProV1

Bob (Boston)

Totally agree with you MC about Rory, but at some point don't we need to acknowledge that balance includes practicing and working on your game? Seems to me he's constantly distracted (tennis tournaments, Monaco, shopping sprees (really?), F1 racing events, globetrotting with his girlfriend). I think this is the point Kevin in Belfast was trying to make.

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

But like I said, if the media shows him out with his girl once a week... that would leave six days to train and practice. As a multimillionaire he has a private jet which he can bring his clubs with him any and every where. But how much play would it get if they reported him practicing 5 days a week? NONE, that's the point

Sean (NJ)

MC - I always wondered what balls pros use on the range when at a tourney. are they actually practice balls? I know you always say how important the ball is (agreed), especially with Rory.. how can you get a feel with a practice ball?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

The practice balls pros get on the range are the same they use for the tournament, they're just stamped PRACTICE. Nike, Callaway, Srixon, TM, etc. every brand is there

Mathew (Los Angeles)

Always wondered this -- what are the differences between a ProV1 and a ProV1x?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

Pro V1x spins less than the Pro V1

Andrew (WI)

My only opinion about Rory's off-course life is that I'd throw away my golf game for someone like her as well, although I would have less at stake

Thomas (San Antonio)

Which young gun out on the tour loves to have a good time and party on the side?

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Used to be Anthony Kim but injury may have changed his nature a bit now.

Wick (Texas)

Caddies easily deserve a spot in the hall of fame when some of them are more famous than some members in the hall of fame and have made more money

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

Except caddies aren't outwardly looking for fame. Like being Vice President, enjoy being behind the curtain but having influence and power without the spotlight.

Mathew (Los Angeles)

I made a bet with a friend before the start of this year that Tiger would finish with 100 Tour wins and 20 majors. Who is going to owe whom a burrito in 10 years?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

100 wins maybe... 20 majors... maybe your friend won't like burritos in ten years

Mathew (Los Angeles)

Andrew (WI) there are cute girls everywhere. Never be afraid to go out of your league. It's how I got my wife.

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Every guy should be trying to do the Dufner... out kick the coverage!! Love it.

Wendy (Chicago)

As a woman I can say with complete confidence that Rory is not wearing the pants in that relationship. Matching pink outfits and shopping sprees? Credit to Caroline -- she's got the leash on that young fella!

Ted (Chicago)

MC, I spit out my morning cup of coffee when I saw Rory in his matching pink outfit with his girlfriend. The guy is clearly shot mentally. From the looks of it, he's probably hen pecked and exhausted from dealing with Caroline!

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

Y'all act like he can't say, "We're done." and walk.

Tim (SF)

Not sure if Cody was askin me or you MC, but I dont think Tiger is $ leader in 2018...I actually think his body will hold him from that. I still think he'll wins, but at age 43 (42?), I think he gets passed on the $ list.

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Agreed

Jefe (MN)

Probably why Adam Scott isn't married. Can't find any girls prettier than he his.....

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

you haven't seen a pic of his girlfriend? man you swung and missed on that last comment... WHIF

Bob (Boston)

Say what you will about Stevie Williams, but he's certainly brought something extra out of Adam Scott

Cody (Office)

Still like my Kiradech pick for DT. Phil once could play tightend with that gut he had

Ben (Boston)

Who is the best golfer that works at ESPN? Buccigross?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

No clue... IRONY ALERT... ESPN never invites the golf team to play in golf events!! Makes me laugh, and then cry. haha

Victor (Idaho)

First off you bring humor to a sport that sometimes is a little to stuffy,I look forward to your weekly chats and videos on ESPN keep it Michael also maybe you need to take Tiger out for a few adult beverages teach him to stop being so darn serious and angry all the time,IT'S GOLF have fun ! it cracks me up the amount of money these guys make to chase a little ball around a pastureBest Victor

Tony (Minneapolis)

MC, You're a big Eagles fan so what are your thoughts on Chip Kelly's offense?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Thinking the Eagles are gonna surprise people on Monday night! But WR's have to stay healthy.

Jefe (MN)

Regarding Bob (Boston) - That is why people like TW don't come along that often. TW puts winning above ALL things. Most "normal" people, as they grow up, get married, have families, and their priorities change. TW tried to be like everyone else with a wife and family, but never changed his priorities...and we know how that turned out.

Craig (Colorado)

Who will have more majors at the end of their career? Steve Williams or Tiger Woods?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

At this point I'll take Steve but that of course is tongue in cheek.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Well that went WAY too fast. Everyone have a great weekend and we'll do it again on Monday. Same Bat time, Same Bat channel!!Play well everyone.MC@ESPNCaddie on Twitter or Email me at ESPNCaddie@gmail.com
