Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! No cut this week for the BMW Championship so everyone gets 4 rounds to make it to the Tour Champ. Who wins this week? Are you a fan of the playoffs yet? If not what will it take? See the schedule for next year? 45 tournaments!! Too much? What say you? BRING IT!!!

Scott (Charlotte)

Oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh C A N E S!!!!!! How is the mood in Gainesville today? I hope all those Gatus are having fun.

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

I'm a Gator hater, when the Gators lose traffic is good and all the diners are empty, I love it!

KJ (Boston)

Whats the longest hole in one you've seen?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

In person, 200 yards

Rick (NJ)

MC...any long shots or bubble guys that you think have a good shot to win this week and jump up the rankings?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Kevin Stadler, Kevin Chappell

DAVE (NJ)

What's up with Bubba this year? He seems off. I saw him say a few times that he was so close over the summer, but really hasn't been a factor. Obviously he can win any week, but how do you think he'll do these last 2 weeks?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

He'll be back in the winner's circle soon enough but I think it'll be next year. Not in the next two events.

Victor (Monroe,La)

Hi Michael Do you think tiger woods can make up points in the fed ex cup playoffsthis year?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Hey Victor! Tiger's in 2nd and he can still win the FedEx Cup with a win at the Tour Championship next week. His destiny is in his own hands and that's what every golfer wants.

Josh (Seattle)

Why do you think Brandt Snedeker has been so streaky as of late? At the beginning/middle of the year he seemed to be playing so consistent...is he suffering from tour fatigue?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Well remember he started like gangbusters then got hurt, then played great again and now, yes, I think he's a little tired.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Good afternoon, MC! What's the word on Conway Farms?

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

What up Tom. Been texting with a caddie all day, says the course is awesome but soft right now, rough isn't US Open deep but it can be penal.

Dan (Minnesota)

I caddied at a US Open course for 15 years. I loved it. How hard is it to break into the professional ranks? Do you have to know an up-and-coming golfer or fall into it with luck?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Well you don't start on the PGA Tour. Start on the Web.com Tour with an up and comer. Go from there.

Regan (NY)

What's the best way that you would suggest someone to become a professional caddie?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

If you've never caddied before, I'd say find some mini tour event close to where you live and caddie for free. See if you really love it first.

Jeff (Chicago)

MC, how does Conway Farms set up for Tiger?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

Same way it sets up for everyone else... it's a new course guys are gonna have to learn on the fly.

leftygolfer (chicago)

Are the players you talk to fans of the Fedex Playoffs?

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

I'd say the majority are fans but there are a couple who are not, especially now that there's no fall series and no q-school.

Oliver (Arkansas)

Taking a week off at the start of football season -- big mistake or huge mistake? People realized this week they can do without golf, so these final two events will draw little interest from people who aren't diehards.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

OR... let the huge surge for football happen then when some people's team suck, they come back to golf for a couple weeks.

Miley (Been There)

Thinking of becoming a caddie? First, get your head examined.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

AMEN!!!

leftygolfer (Chicago)

Typical caddie dinner after a day on the course?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

If there's a Chipotle near the course you can hang there and see caddies and players most evenings.

Bernie (Napa)

Shorten the playoffs to three weeks, finish on Labor Day and make way for football. The Tour needs to recognize its place, and that is January-Labor Day.

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

Which is why the new schedule is 45 weeks!

Greg (Bentonville)

So the PGA Tour can make schedule adjustments because of the Olympics, but they can't figure out how to finish the season before the NFL takes over Sundays? Do the suits in Ponte Vedra not pay attention?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

If you're a "suit" in Ponte Vedra and a sponsor says, "We wanna give you $6 million for a tournament and we don't care where it is on the schedule." You gonna say No thanks? Didn't think so.

Andrew Svoboda (I play on the tour)

Anybody notice I won and wrapped up my card yesterday? Yeah, I didn't think so. Nobody cares about this Web.com playoff system.

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

I care because they're gonna have to make at least one tweak to it. Congrats on the win and moving up on the list. Michael Putnam should not be playing.

KJ (Boston)

whats the most $ you've heard being wagered during a practice round?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Mid six figures

g.p. (nd)

Better chance for a top 5 this week, Phil or Rory?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Rory

Joe (Pittsburgh)

Is the FedEx Cup favorite Henrik, Phil or Tiger...or do you take the field?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

I'd take the field if I had to place a bet

JA (Chitown)

What do you think happened to Padraig Harrington? Wins 3 out of 6 majors, tries to make changes, and is an afterthought these days.

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

It's the perfect example of what happens when you're always "looking" to get better instead of perfecting what is working for you.

g.p. (nd)

Michael, the earlier question about Bubba made me wonder, do you feel the loss where he and his caddied disagreed on the club, hit in the water and lost coming down the stretch really hurt his confidence for the rest of the season?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Not at all. Remember he was in the hunt at a tournament a few weeks later. I just think he's in a down time right now. All golfers go thru it.

Zach attack (Iowa)

Do you think the top players will play the tour events (former Fall series stops) after Tour Championship now that they have FedEX points?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

Honestly not sure. I'm gonna ask guys next week at the Tour Champ about it. Since there are 45 events total it 'll be really easy to make your schedule. I think it might spread guys out even more.

g.p. (nd)

Whats the story on Putnam?

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

#1 on the Web.com Tour money list so playing this series does nothing for his position cause he can't improve. He's literally taking a spot for someone who would have a chance to earn their card.

Art Chavez (North Side)

Chicago area putting on another great show for the PGA Tour. My question is, when is the tour going to recognize the middle class and have a practice round with tour players that's more affordable.

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

It's supply and demand. Demand outpaces spots by a LONG shot so they can keep the cost high. Also weeds out the hacks that would make the day even slower!

Dustin Johnson (Myrtle Beach)

You're telling me I'm not one of the 12 best American players? Screw the point system and use the eyeball test.

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

My eyeballs say you need to prepare for your wedding. You are still awesome though.

@DwnTwnDelFuego (NoVA)

What's your favorite 19th hole & cocktail of choice?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

Don't have a favorite. Depends on the course and weather that day.

Bill (California)

Why shouldn't Michael Putnam be playing? Isn't it worth the experience playing against a few dozen current (if only momentarily) Tour pros? Not to mention the money to be made. It's not like he's taking someone else's spot in the field.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Perhaps Putnam and his caddie find cash to be useful.

Ed (Long Island)

Better recheck on Putnam, I read he can improve his status, and his finish will not take away from another player, they'll add one more and not count him. Also telling a guy not to go and try to make money not fair to him.

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Putnam won the money title. Means he has top priority for the 13-14 season even gets in Players. Can't get any better than that. So if he doesn't play allows another guy from off the tour a chance to play his way on.

Zach attack (Iowa)

Would you be in favor of Tour players being required to play a Tour event once every 4 or 5 years.

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Especially now.

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

If I was gonna do a book I'd have Reilly and Gene Wojo help me

JA (Chitown)

Do you agree with MAJ that 13 is too young for someone to be playing in an professional tournament?

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

Each case is independent. In this case I do agree with Mr. Jimenez

Tom (L.A.)

One suggestion: stop calling it "playoffs." It's more of a chase.

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

That'd be fine with me.

Bill (California)

Other 'guys from off the tour' can't get into these tournaments. Only the 126-200 guys from the PGA and the top 75 from the Web.com. No one else gets in even if some of those guys don't show up.

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

If Putnam wasn't permitted to play it would free up a spot for #201 or 76

Zach attack (Iowa)

Do players and caddies have contracts? Or are either one free to leave at any time?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

No written contracts

Ed (Long Island)

Do you think there will be any Ryder Cup implications now with the fall series counting - some guy can get hot against less than stellar fields, get a big jump on Ryder Cup points. Could turn into quantity instead of quality.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

Not really cause the OWGR points will still be weighted towards the "big field" events so the cream will still rise to the top.

Zach attack (Iowa)

Who you got this week for the LPGA's "5th" major?

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

It's NOT a major

Jefe (MN)

Newsflash: Being rich doesn't make you a better golfer. Just a better liar.

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

So rich people are better liars than poor people? That's just dumb

Doug (GA)

MC's right. Putnam can't improve his status; he's already fully exempt next year (not included in the shuffle) by virtue of winning the money title. Did I also read that the winner of the Finals Series will also be fully exempt as well?

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

yes, but in the shuffle Putnam is always first, series winner is 2nd

g.p. (nd)

I get a kick out of the guys that get upset about it being called a playoff. Who cares. Its a series of tournaments that gets the big names out playing a few extra times before the end of their season. Enjoy it fellas.

Lizzie (Seattle)

What does the PGA have against the West Coast? They haven't played the PGA west of the Mississippi since Sahalee in '98. Plenty of great courses. Don't need to go back to cow pastures like Valhalla every few years.

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

It's not the course, it's the travel. PGA of America being nice to the PGA Tour because the Tour is on the east coast when the PGA is happening.

Zach attack (Iowa)

Like you said earlier if a sponsor writes a big enough check and wants it to be a major. I guess it is.. at least on the LPGA. So not picking a winner?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

It's not up to the sponsor (which is a hint, "MasterCard Masters"? NEVER) or the commissioner to declare what a major is, that is the people and media's decision

Keith H (Seattle)

Lizzie, the PGA of America owns Valhalla. That means they don't pay the course to stage the PGA Championship or Ryder Cup. They pocket the cash, instead.

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

And the PGA of America is a FOR PROFIT organization which means they are all about making money. Big difference to the USGA

leftygolfer (chicago)

Who would fill your foursome for your last round of golf ?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Sounds kind of strange but I'd like to play my very last round alone. I'd play my second to last round with some special people. What are the terms? Alive, dead, golfers, non golfers...?

Jim (Philly)

Do players ever get miffed at you when you give your honest opinion about their play when it isn't positive?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

No because I would never rip a guy just to do it. So if I say a guy is struggling, he already knows it. Now when it's a opinion about something like caddie races getting banned, some guys didn't like it.

Ed (Long Island)

From Web.com "The 25 players who have already locked up cards via the Web.com Tour season money list are highlighted below in gold and won't count against the 25 additional cards that will be awarded during the Finals."

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

Does it say the guys who have their cards won't get paid? Why are they playing? Because the guy in 20th is trying to finish 4th and have better re-shuffle status. But Putnam can't improve. Do I need to draw you a picture or a chart?

Bill (California)

Another idea: Put the leading Web.com money winner into the FedEx playoffs. Start him the same number of points as the player in position 125 and let him go from there.

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

GREAT idea!

g.p. (nd)

Do most players treat the caddies as equals, or are there plenty of guys that look down on other player's caddies?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

Caddies don't see themselves as equals but appreciate when players acknowledge how important they are. I'd say 80% of guys look at caddies and understand.

John (Denver)

So, have you ever had any of Jeff King's beef jerky? Is it really that good?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Had it at the PGA Championship... yeah, it's pretty awesome!

James (Chitown)

Here's a hypothetical. You are allowed to caddy for both Tiger and Phil for one tournament each. Which tournament would you choose for each and why?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Tiger at Torrey Pines cause I know we're gonna win and Phil hhmmm......... US Open cause if we had the lead on the 16th hole on Sunday I think I could bring him home. And that's just me being cocky, cause Bones is a HOF caddie and I AM NOT.

Tim (SF)

What Caddie on tour is the best golfer?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Zach Johnson's caddie Damon Green

Jefe (MN)

Leaving out Caddyshack - What is your Best Golf Movie of all time? a. Tin Cupb. Great Game Every Playedc. Bagger Vanced. Bobby Jones - Stroke of Geniuse. Other

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Dead Solid Perfect. Go find it.

g.p. (nd)

Obviously there are more factors to it, but how highly ranked in the world would a player have to be for you to consider picking up the bag again?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

Ranking doesn't matter, cause if he's good enough.... really would come down to what we both could bring to the table. Can we win.

@DwnTwnDelFuego (NoVA)

What are the top thing(s) a pro carries in his bag that an amateur doesn't (but should)?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

really good ball mark repair tool

JA (Philly)

I recently a highlight package of Kevin Streelman win the Kodak million dollar challenge. Was that you with him?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Yes. A highlight of my caddie career so far.

Ed (Long Island)

No pictures necessary, Putnam says he has $180,000 reasons to play each week - players don't like it, beat him - he's EARNED the right to go there and play.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Which is why I said it needs to be changed. I'm a Putnam fan and he should play because he can. But for what the series is used for, it needs to be addressed.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

That was fast! Thanks everyone! Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel... FRIDAY!!Have a great week!!MC@ESPNCaddie on Twitter or ESPNCaddie@gmail.com
