Good win for the Cowboys, though they still have a lot of work to do. Rangers on the verge of imploding. Again. Texas needs to hire Art Briles. Let's get this chat started.
What's good JJT,I know a lot of people are not impressed with the Boys after Sunday but I think the win was good because that's a game they would've lost last year so mentally the seem a little better
Here's my point with the Cowboys: Until proved otherwise, they're not good enough to style point wins. It was OK to style point the great Cowboys teams from the 90s because they were that good. This team pales, so a win is a win. Obviously, they have work to do but take the win and relax
Hey JJT, do the Rangers make the playoff this year?
yes. They're gonna have a hard time winning division because the offense is just abject
JJT, why isn't Lance Berkman playing more? Will Wash continue to use Profar more than him?
he's hurt. he can't really even swing the bat from one side of the plate. He's been hurt since July. Whatever they get is a bonus. his body is shot
What should the Rangers do with the 5th spot in their rotation?
I'm not sure it matters if you can't score. Tepesch and Ogando - either one is fine. Anyone else is fine to. There aren't a whole lot of good options right now
I know it is only week 1 but How do you think the Dallas Cowboys will do in 2013?
Is this the most aggressive you have seen the Cowboys defense in terms of flying to the ball?
it has been one game. It's a great start. Let's see how it goes. They have had other games where they flew around and made plays. The shut out their last 2 opponents in 2009. They've played god D before
Do you think its to early to call morris Claiborne a injury prone player?
yep. At the end of this season, I might change my mind
Should the cowboys look at harris more at the 3rd receiver because theres a little more trust than there is with terrance
No. You look at who has more potential as a WR. The answer is Williams. The more he plays, the more he'll learn the better he'll get. You're betting that in December he'll be much better player than he is right now
Will the cowboysbring in another corner?
I'd be surprised if they didn't work out someone today. Sterling Moore is at the crib- and he was one of the final cuts
Are the Rangers done? They can't hit. They (Beltre) can't field, and we can't pitch. As of this moment, we are 2-2 1/2 games out. I have that sick feeling in my stomach of last year. (Deja Vu all over again)
baseball is funny game. Peaks and valleys are part of the deal. They have the pitching to win. They gotta believe in each other and someone - anyone - has to lead the way. This is where mental toughness kicks in. Josh isn't here to blame
The 3rd receiver has always been a big part of the offense, how concern should the cowboys be that williams and romo are still not on the same page?
williams has played one NFL game. He'll get better
Who will be the the starter between leary and bernandau when waters is ready to play?
leary. Easy, i think
It appeared that Frederick lived up to his first round selection in week 1. Do you agree?
i haven't studied the coach's video yet, but it looked like a pretty solid performance. No glaring issues
Is Brian Waters starting against KC?
They haven't even practiced yet this week. There's a good chance, but who knows
Impressed with Selvie!! What can the Cowboys realistically expect from him the rest of the season?
If he's solid that will be good. He's never been more than just a guy. Don't burden him with expectations
wow the rangers get a great performance from darvish last night and waste we are going down hill fast at this rate with the indians and yankees surging i could definitly see us missing playoffs all together your thoughts?
You can't win if you can't hit. Kinsler has the ability to be a dynamic offensive player, but he hasn't really gotten untracked since early in the year. They need him to be good offensively
JJT, can I call BS and have you tell me why the media falls for this?... Parcells 3-4 defense will force more turnovers than the Zimmer 4-3 because of more pressure. Phillip's 3-4 defense will force more TOs than the Parcells 3-4 because of more pressure. Ryan's 3-4 defense will force more TOs than the Phillips 3-4 because of even more pressure. Now, Kiffin's 4-3 defense will force more TOs than the Ryan 3-4 because of less pressure; of course, Zimmer's 4-3 was modeled after the Kiffin 4-3 long ago.
I don't speak for all media. I can tell you I haven't written that. What I have written is that the scheme Kiffin and Marinelli teach tends to create a lot of turnovers. If you read what I've written about it (http://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/9651753/monte-kiffin-rod-marinelli-promised-turnovers-delivered) then you'd know that those two place more emphasis on it than most other coaches. They emphasize it more in drills, techniques and meetings. Sean Lee explained it to me best after the game. He said they'll be watching practice video and Kiffin will say that was a good tackle, but it wasn't a great tackle because you didn't try to strip the ball."
Lot of good from the new D on SUN. Curious though if the Tampa 2 will continue to allow slant after slant after slant?
I would assume they'll make some adjustments and have the CBs play tighter. They're smart people
What was up with Mo Claiborne Sunday night? He did not look good
He didn't play all preseason and didn't practice for about a month. What did you expect?
I know that several players said that Ryan's defensive scheme last year was too complicated and they need to dumb it down this year, but there were still several huge gaffe's in the secondary on Sunday night. Is it really the scheme or are the players just not that smart?
Bruce Carter gave me a great explanation in the difference between the schemes the other day. I'm paraphrasing, but Carter said Ryan's scheme was great because it always put you in position to make a play. That's because the defense changed every time the offense shifted or went into motion, but you could also understand why that could lead to a lot of mental mistakes or busts. This scheme is simpler because very little changes after you break the huddle. This scheme is more about "we do what we do. We don't react and adjust to you."
Will RGIII just shut up now and just play football after receiving that slice of humble pie in the first half on Monday Night Football? Or will things spiral out of control with him and Shanahan if the Skins go 0-3? I say 0-3 because I don't think they'll win at Green Bay, which makes the Lions game a pivotal one.
no idea. we'll see. I like him. He's good for the game.
Do you think JJ Wilcox will take Will Allen's spot at some point? I don't know that he's ready to be an NFL starter yet but he just flashes raw talent.
nope. Next year, I think he'll be ready. It's a big jump from Georgia Southern to NFL
What's the overall thought on the play of the offensive line? If injuries are avoided, can they be good enough? thx
solid performance overall in week 1
Isn't Mack Brown's recent inability to find the right coaches a symptom of his biggest issue/weakness of late in Austin, which is evauluating the right talent?
However you look at it, talent evaluation seems to be a problem. If it's not talent evaluation, then it's coaching because guys aren't getting better
Heard a lot of talk on NFL radio yesterday about the six turnovers not being legit because of the final score. Are we not already proving to be better than last year? And what's keeping the Rangers from taking that next step like a couple of years ago? Thanks, my man!
6 TOs is 6 Tos. Some were fluky like the muffed punt, but you have to be in position to get the turnovers. rangers can't hit
Is the general thought that the defense will create a lot of turnovers this year or was Sundays game an anomaly ?? thx
Kiffin and Marinelli emphasize it more than any coaches I've seen in 19 years covering the team. Because they play more zone, they see the QB and they can react more quickly to tipped passes and overthrown balls. Playing man to man, you're running with a guy so you don't see the quarterback.
I hope the cowboys bring sterling moore back with Mo injuries and webb being inexperience. Whats your opinion?
could be a possibility, if they want insurance
After one game, what's the thought about Callahan calling play instead of Garrett? Did Romo's influence make much of a difference? thx
Still threw the ball 49 times, but Murray got 20 carries and he had his two longest runs and most yards in the fourth quarter. Not enough deep shots, but that could be because Callahan didn't think they could block the Giants.
I know this isn't related to Dallas sports, but I noticed the Captains have stars under the C on their uniforms. Some of them are gold and others white. What does this represent? Thanks!
no idea. I'll ask
Alex Smith won't have the same deep threats as Eli has, but I worry about our corners ability to play the slant routes, especially against a physical WR like Dwayne Bowe. Alex is pretty accurate as well. Thoughts on how our D can look to improve this week in a tough matchup on the road?
I'm sure they'll switch things up, so the slants aren't so easy. A little more press coverage, I assume. But they haven't even practiced yet
With the way the rangers have been playing down the stretch, do you see a long postseason run in them in addition to them getting on a hot streak to end the season leading them into the postseason? Or will they limp into the playoffs like they did last season and be one and done?
they look like a one and done team today. If they find some offense and we've seen it a few times this season, then they can go to the Fall Classic
I know it's a scheme related reason, but can't Carr and Claiborne at least show inside technique, maybe play it?
it depends on what call they were getting. They just don't decide themselves how to play things
The offense sputtered and looked dismal at times. It seemed that eventhough Dez was being double-covered none of the other recievers took advantage of that. I think Cole Beasley would of worked great in the slot. Also whats with no 2 tight-end sets? And please, no more WR screens.
Beasley would not work better than Miles Austin in slot
Good Morning JJT,Do u buy the EAGLES up tempo speed offense for them to run in all 16 games? Also should the COWBOYS be concerned when we play them?? B/c WASH seemed like they were out of gas last night
great start by Philly. Check back in a month when coordinators have a week's worth of video to study and defend
JTT can someone tell Romo to stop having a teach-in at the line of scrimmage?
that's not Romo's fault, if it happens. It's on the player
Does Spencer play this week?
I don't think so. He hasn't practiced once since July 25
Why was there no predictions from ESPN Dallas team for Week 1? You used ESPN NY site for predictions.
no idea. Above my pay grade. i picked Dallas 37-35, I think
Just curious, what was the rationale for the Cowboys keeping 4 TEs and not a single fullback?
FBs are 1-dimensional players. TEs are versatile players
What was the reasoning for romo having 33 paasing attempts in first have I thought Callahan was suppose to bring balance?
i would consider most of them long handoffs
The focus of the D is to force turnovers, but as opposed to what? Sack the QB? Contain the run?
It's to attack the ball on every play because they believe winning the turnover battle is the most important statistic in the game
When can we start blaming ron washington for the rangers problems? I know that hitting is bad, but his in game tactics just perplexed me
they lose 1-0 last night. A double steal - a Washington decision - puts runners on 2nd and 3rd for Beltre. He grounds out. Is that the manager's fault? This is a flawed team that revolves around pitching because they lineup hasn't produced. Nelson Cruz, the most productive hitter, will miss the last 50 games. Is that the manager's fault. Maybe they wouldn't even be in this position without the manager handling all the prima donnas you find in a baseball clubhouse
JJT i'll take the WIN over the GIANTS but i not happy with the way the gave up 14pts in the 4th qtr the GIANTS almost came back to WIN! The COWS needs to learn how to close games! Your thoughts
they seem to have closed that one
So what's the deal with Lance Berkman?
Jerry looked good in the pics with Hulk and Lebron? Were you there with them?
No. Sadly, I missed that
Not all short white guys are Wes Welker. Can someone explain to the fandom that Cole Beasley sucks? Thx.
he doesn't suck, but he has NO role on special teams. A 5th receiver must contribute on ST
Ware had a great play to start the game but seemed to only get minimual pressure the rest of the way. Is this an adjustment to D-end or good blocking?
I'll have some thoughts on that tomorrow after I watch the coaches tape of Ware
Barry Church looks like he has the potential to have a borderline probowl year, agree?
he's off to a great start. But it has been one game. let's see where it goes
You think Garrett realized in the 4th to go for 2 b/c he wasn't bogged down with calling O plays? He probably woulda kicked the xtra pt if that happened last year.
very perceptive. maybe he would've made it, maybe not. Perhaps not calling plays allowed him to think about it before it happened. It's hard to get a honest answer from that type of question
JJT, do you think this is Mac Brown's last year and who do you think could be a replacement
if he doesn't get to at least 9 wins, I think he'll step down so he doesn't have to get fired.
Is Will Allen going to be a liability at Safety?
No more than any of the other safeties the Cowboys have been running out there the last few years. Here's the deal: He's never been a great player, but he already has a strong voice in the locker room and he will make some plays. he had an interception and a big pass deflection. he gave up some plays too, but we're talking about a guy who has been a backup much of his career. He has a lot of value. he'll get better
May be a weird question, but how & when do players get paid? After the game or on Fridays? Does the team direct deposit or does everyone get a check. Keep up the good work JJT
Players get paid on Tuesdays. They get 1/17 of their salary. Players are also off on Tuesday.
Why doesn't Garrett/Callahan put Dez in motion to get him off double teams....that was one of TO's gripes....most teams with legit #1 wr's do that
good question that I don't know the answer. I will say, you don't see the Cowboys use a whole lot of motion in general
Is Fab Melo the answer at center for the Mavs? I'm glad we had the financial flexibility to sign him.
didn't know they had signed him. Must've happened today. No idea. I'll look into it and have an answer next week
great chat. We mowed down a lot of questions and covered a lot of ground. You can always hit me on twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas or facebook with additional questions. Peace. be blessed
