Jeff Dickerson chat

Jeff Dickerson
  (12:58 PM)

Greetings from an upbeat Halas Hall. Can't wait to spend the next 30 minutes breaking down the Bears' 24-21 win over the Bengals.

Devin Fort Myers FL [via mobile]

How did dj willams do, and do you think he will get the start this week?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:02 PM)

D.J. Williams did okay in 42 snaps. The press box stat sheet credited him with 3 tackles, but that number could go up based on coaches' review. Williams did miss a tackle or two, which I guess is what you would expect from a player that missed the entire preseason. The big thing w/ Williams is that he didn't have a glaring mental mistake that led to a long Bengals' offensive play. I think the trust factor is why Williams got the nod over Bostic. I assume Williams will start at MLB in Week 2 vs. Vikings.

chris scott (cadiz KY)

when was the last game jay didnt get sack in

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:03 PM)

Good question, Chris. The last time Cutler wasn't sacked in a game was December 2, 2012 vs. Seattle. That was the game the Bears lost in overtime and the last game Brian Urlacher ever played in.

Dustin (Champaign)

How much playing time will we see for M. Wilson? When do you think he'll make his debut?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:05 PM)

Right now Wilson is inactive on game day. Unless the Bears were unhappy with Earl Bennett or the game plan for a specific week calls for an extra receiver to dress on game day, Wilson might continue to be inactive. He doesn't give the Bears much on special teams, so he doesn't dress on Sunday.

james.davis (Dallas)

How do you assess the play of Mills and Long as rookies on the right side of the line?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:07 PM)

I'm sure the tape will show some mistakes here and there, but I thought they held up okay. The Bengals didn't record a sack, which is always a collective effort by the offense when that happens. But I see no reason why the Bears would change anything up on the OL from Week 1 to Week 2.

Chris (Naperville, IL)

After the game (that I unfortunately missed), I was looking at the highlights and the one thing that missed the reel was Robbie Goulde's 58 yard field goal which ultimately was the difference in the win. How important has Robbie been to the Bear's success in recent years?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:08 PM)

Every week it seems certain games are decided by a FG. It definitely helps to have one of the best kickers in the game on the roster. Gould has 10 winning FGs in his career.

Mark (Denver)

What can the Bears do to improve the pass rush? Andy Dalton couldn't pick the Bears apart with the time he was given but Rodgers, and Stafford are better and know the Bears secondary. I didn't hear Peppers name metioned during the whole game. How concernerned are the Bears about the pass rush and should the fans be nervous?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:10 PM)

Lots of questions about the pass rush. It wasn't there for much of the game. I'm sure there were a variety of reasons for that - Andy Dalton got rid of the ball quick sometimes, the Bengals offensive line held up better than expected and the Bears defensive line just didn't play very well. Late in the game they were able to provide a push up front, but Peppers, Melton and co. were quiet for much of the day. I did think Stephen Paea and Shea McClellin had pretty good games.

Jay (Charlotte) [via mobile]

With all the focus on the right side of the line, Slauson (sp?) has gone under the radar. Obviously no sacks is a good thing, but how has he been doing at the LG spot?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:12 PM)

The Bears sound very happy with Slauson. They believe he is a physical, tough player. I don't know why the Jets gave up on him, but the Bears think highly of Slauson. It sounded like he had a good game vs. Bengals judging by the comments in the postgame locker room.

Jason (South Dakota)

Earl Bennett sure seems to have regressed once he got his contract from the Bears? Do you think money changed him or is it just the fact he's not that great to begin with?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:13 PM)

He hasn't been able to stay healthy. That's the No. 1 thing. No, money has not changed him. He works extremely hard and tries to play through injuries all the time. But he needs to catch a break and stop getting hurt.

Corey (Denver)

Hi JD. Thanks for all of the coverage. What happened on the Cutler INT? Bad throw? Bush cutting the wrong way? Defender pulling shoulder?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:14 PM)

Cutler was hit just as he let the ball go but I think it was more of a bad decision more than anything else. But besides that play, Cutler had an excellent game for the most part.

mansoor (san diego)

Whats more likely? Bears starting 3-0 or packers starting 0-3?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:15 PM)

Bears starting 3-0.

Posko (Chitown)

Where was Peppers yesterday?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:15 PM)

He played the most snaps of any member of the Bears' defensive line. Just wasn't able to do much for whatever reason.

Conner (Baraboo, WI)

Do you think Martellus Bennett has the chance to be a top 3 TE in the league under the new Marc Trestman offense?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:17 PM)

I don't think Bennett is a Jimmy Graham, Vernon Davis type player. But he is talented. And he can block. I still think 50-60 catches is a realistic goal for Bennett this year.

Garrett (Indianapolis)

Chances Bears get three pro-bowlers from the Offense this year?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:18 PM)

It's possible, I guess. Brandon Marshall is likely a given. Then maybe Forte, maybe Bushrod. It could happen. But I still expect the majority of the Bears' Pro Bowlers to come from the defense.

Dave (Chicago, IL)

Our defenses inability to bring someone down on first contact at times yesterday was a nerve wrecking thing to watch. What kind of change will have to be made, especially for a hard running back like AP in week 2?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:20 PM)

The margin for error is going to be razor thin for the Bears next week vs. AP. Remember last year when MLB Nick Roach was out of position for only 1 play against Minnesota - Peterson busted loose for a long TD run. Peterson is unreal. If the Bears don't wrap up it's over. I'm sure they know that.

Randy (Biloxi, MS)

With seemingly every kickoff going out of the endzone, and minimal results at punt returns, do you see Devin Hester remaining on the roster the whole season? or.. Do you think the coaches may think he is just taking up a roster spot eventually?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:21 PM)

I believe the plan is for Hester to be on the roster for the whole season.

Trey (Englewood) [via mobile]

In my opinion Shea should be starting opposite Peppers..he had a sack, tfl, a hurry and drew a big holding call..u can't teach speed..what is your opinion on that and how bout that rookie right side JD??

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:23 PM)

I think McClellin is better off being plugged in during the course of the game in different spots and in different situations. I don't think he needs to start to have success. Wootton is built to handle a larger snap count. They key is to keep McClellin fresh and insert him in the game at the right time. That would be my approach, at least.

Joel (Florida)

Was it just me or did it seem like the secondary played pretty loose coverage? I know they did an excellent job forcing turnovers, but the WR's (Green especially) seemed to have a lot of space to make catches.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:25 PM)

That's more about A.J. Green. He's out of this world. He was close to having a Steve Smith type game against the Bears. Fans who remember the Bears' divisional playoff loss to the Panthers in Jan 06 know what I'm talking about.

Dave (Charlotte)

Devin Hester seems to have lost his explosiveness. Is there anything the Bears can do to help him return to his old form?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:27 PM)

I think we should wait to see what Hester does in the return game. He's had three chances this year. Give it some time. I thought he looked fresh in the preseason.

mansoor (san diego)

After week 1, have you change your predictions for the nfc north?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:28 PM)

No. Can't change it after one week! I picked the Bears to finish 9-7, so that's where I still stand.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:28 PM)

No. Can't change it after one week! I picked the Bears to finish 9-7, so that's where I still stand.

Brian, Albuquerque [via mobile]

Thanks Jeff for reminding us of that nightmare

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:28 PM)

Sorry. But Green was out of control. He almost won the game by himself for the Bengals.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:29 PM)

Thanks everybody. Have to jump on ESPN 1000 here in a minute. We'll talk next week.
