Is it time for Mack Brown to retire?
We'll see how the rest of the season goes. Still 10 games to play. But if he doesn't get to 8-9-10 wins, there will be a lot of pressure to replace him. I don't think Mack would let it get to the point where they'll have to fire him.
How much bigger was Clemson's win over Georgia after the Dawgs handily thrashed South Carolina?
It's big. It means a lot for the ACC, along with Miami's win over Florida. I still thought UGA had a very good team after losing at Clemson. Took a really young defense on the road to play a top-10 team, minus kicker, couple of top safeties and then they lost Malcolm Mitchell early in the game. Clemson has a chance to have a great year
Let's hear you say something complimentary of the B1G Ten. Anything?
Urban Meyer is a great coach. I'll be curious to see how Wisconsin does at Arizona State. Badgers might be a real sleeper. Northwestern is really good. Michigan might be best team in the league. Illinois has really rebounded nicely with Cubit as OC. That good?
I know Alabama's offense was less-than-impressive, but TAMU's defense has looked similarly unimpressive in giving up 4TDs a game to weak competition... Is this shaping up to be another high scoring affair? first to 35?
Bama had two weeks to fix the problems on the O-line. AJ McCarron's foot should feel better. The Tide have too many weapons to not be explosive on offense. A&M gets back five defensive starters, who were suspended the last two weeks. Still a pretty mediocre defense, IMO. We'll see if Bama's D can slow down the Aggies better than last year. Johnny has a lot of weapons around him now
Is Todd Gurley the SEC's leading Heisman candidate right now?
I think he's the best RB in the country right now. He's a beast. Mettenberger is really off to a fast start, we'll see if he can keep it going. Clowney probably out of it for now. Yeldon is going to need better production from Bama's O-line to really get into the Heisman race.
If Bucky repeats performance from 1st 2 weeks with shutout and/or 3 100 yard backs.. what do you make of this team?
They're about where I thought they'd be. The defense should get better as the season goes a long. There are a lot of young players starting on the front seven. We'll see how long Braxton Miller is out. I don't think Cal is going to be too much trouble.
Isn't Mack Brown's recent inability to find the right coaches a symptom of his biggest issue/weakness of late in Austin, which is evauluating the right talent?
Everybody in the country wanted to hire Manny Diaz three years ago. I think he might have been too loyal to him, might have made the change after last season to keep him out of trouble.
Is there a better route runner than Jeremy Gallon?
He's really, really good. Devin Gardner does a great job of putting the ball where only Gallon can catch it.
Should I be saving up some money for a trip to a bowl game, Mark?
It was a great win for Leach and the Cougars. Don't buy a plane ticket or reserve a hotel room yet. That might be the worst offense they see all year
Do you see Louisville falling in the polls even if they keep winning big?
Louisville has been pretty impressive the first two weeks, but they have to be absolutely perfect every week if they're going to move up in the polls. The problem is the Cards' schedule looks even worse now than it did in the preseason. Rutgers? UConn? USF? The schedule is a joke. I can't see a one-loss team like UGA, UF, FSU, Clemson, Stanford, Oregon getting passed over for the Cardinals.
Which game are you headed to this weekend? And do the Rebels run through the Horns?
I'll be in AggieLand for SEC West showdown. Ole Miss has a shot. UT should have some success against Rebs on offense, though. It's hard to say it, but I can't see how Robinson isn't an upgrade. The 'Horns looked absolutely confused on D last week
i think David (TX)'s question was about Bucky Badger - not lousy OSU... granted the competition has been lousy, but sconnie hasn't given up any points yet! What sort of chance do you give them against ASU (for the W, not the shutout)?
Whoops, sorry about that. As I said earlier, I'm really excited to see them against Arizona State. Stave has played well and they obviously have great backs. But they haven't played anyone yet (really two FCS teams, IMO). Andersen is a really good coach, and the Badgers' sked sets up well
Let's play some hypotheticals. Let's say a BIG and Pac 12 team go undefeated and there's a 1 loss SEC champ. Who gets to play for the National Title?
Too early. Depends on who the teams are. But I'd say the SEC team gets left out.
Calling an upset. Tennessee 31 Oregon 28
I was completely wrong on WKU over UT (didn't expect five turnovers in six plays), but Vols aren't ready to beat Ducks on the road. UT is getting better, but they're not that good yet
Assuming LSU handles Auburn...can they beat the DAWGS? No bias....
Sure, UGA's defense is really struggling to stop the run. LSU has backs stacked like cord wood. Game is at home, though, and home field advantage has been huge the first two weeks
At the end of this week, 4 of the SEC's top 6 teams will already have losses, with LSU having a particularly tough road to hoe the rest of the way... what happens if 2 teams out of clemson, oregon, stanford, ohio state go undefeated while SEC teams pick each other off - would SEC fans accept a BCS championship game without an SEC team? (i know its crazy early, but still, looks like going 12-0 in SEC will be nearly impossible this year)
They'd have to accept Clemson, Oregon and Stanford. There might be some complaining about Ohio State's schedule, but I can't see an undefeated Big Ten champ getting left out. But again, it's too early
Mark, any thoughts on the 1st part of the Oklahoma State article in SI?
Serious allegations. The next four parts can't be good.
Mark, your biggest winners and losers in week 2?
Biggest winners: UGA, Miami, Michigan, BYU, Washington StBiggest losers: Texas, USC, Florida
What do you make of BYU? Are they a top-25 team or a one-hit wonder?
I think they're a good team, always seem to be under Mendenhall for the most part. I think the rushing performance Saturday night was more of a product of UT's defense. Still have to throw the ball better
Who's the next coach that goes to the NFL? With the success of Harbaugh and (perhaps too early) Kelly, it has to make college coaches more attractice.
My best guesses -- and strictly guesses -- would be David Shaw or Kevin Sumlin. Not sure anyone will pry Shaw away from Stanford, and I'm not sure Sumlin is ready to go anywhere, either
Urban Meyer is the coaching headliner in the Big Ten. But is Brady Hoke getting enough love for the coaching job he's doing in Ann Arbor and the talent he's bringing in?
No, I think Hoke is one of the best coaches in the country with two good coordinators. I loved the hire from the beginning when other people didn't. He's not going to be intimidated by Urban
TCU or Texas Tech on Thursday night?
Big step up in competition for the Red Raiders. TCU looked a little shaky last week, but I'm sure LSU hangover had something to do with it. Hard to go against Tech in Lubbock.
Greg Robinson hire? Grade? I give it an D.
About the only guy Mack could hire right now, given his familiarity with the system and personnel
do you think johnny football can overcome bama again?
If the A&M defense gets a lot better. For all the off-field stuff, Manziel is still one of the most explosive players in the country, if not the most explosive.
I thought I was supposed to be 'scared' of Clowney? Anyway....is this a sign that Clowney was hyped up too much or is he in a slump?
He's still going to be the No. 1 pick in the draft. Teams have done a nice job of scheming around him. I'm not sure he's completely motivated this year, either
Alabama or A&M? Close or big?
Haven't decided yet. I'll post on Thursday
Just curious what you think Johnny Football will do/be in the NFL?
Lack of height would be a concern, but after watching Vick last night, Chip Kelly might draft him high
OK, folks, I gotta run. Thanks for stopping by. I'll be back at 1 p.m. next week. Take care. Have a good weekend
