Hi all, welcome to our weekly Cubs chat...back at wrigley after that road trip..final homestand...Braves looking to clinch, cubs looking to , well, finish strong...Theo, McLeod, Sveum all spoke to media today so fire away with questions!
What's your take on Sveum ? Do you think he'll be gone before 2014, or they'll keep him on until they're ready to contend in 2015. Everyone seems to think they'll keep him, but the top brass can't be happy with his player development -- which is really his only role at this point. Castro and Rizzo have fallen off a cliff. I say he's gone.
I could be wrong but I think he's back for final year of his deal..I WOULD change some coaches and if he refuses then I'd can him..I dont believe the hitting coaches have done a good job...Castro and Rizzo are in the middle of a bigger process going on..I wouldnt put that all on Dale..if we do, then we give him credit for T.Wood and W. Castillo, dont we? too hard to go player by player like that...its a bigger picture thing..
Why is Logan Watkins riding the pine? 33 plate appearances and only 3 complete games played since August 4th?! Why isnt he getting more playing time to see what he can do? Barney, while good defensively is a waste of an AB!
Ive asked..guess they respect Barney too much but more importantly dont view Watkins as any answer at 2nd..now maybe baez or someone will have that job someday but until someone better comes along I would think they woul want to test Watkins on-base abilities at the major league level since thats what they are desperate for..Now would have been the time to find out..Bottom line, Watkins isnt going to be one of those players handed anything..if hes a starter in this league he's going to have to take the harder road
if the cubs go for a big name manager like girardi, would that mean the cubs will start looking for proven players via free agency or by trading away some of their minor league talent?
No. Will not change their plan one bit
Which under the radar guy in the cubs organization do you think will be a big surprise next year?
Would love to say Watkins but I'll go with Kyle Hendricks later in year...maybe not so much under the radar since hes the pitcher of the year in the minors for them...
Who do you see on the current roster as making up part of the Cubs outfield picture next year?
Lake and Schierholtz....I would love to see Bogusevic start the year in left with Lake in center nad Schierholtz in right...just to see what Bogusevic could do every day...soon enough others will be here with higher ceilings potentially but until they are ready, I want to see this guy rake every day
McCloud Said today he sees Villanueva-Beaz-Alcantara as Iowa's starting infield next season, What does this mean for Mike Olt?
Good question..he's in gthe mix but I think he has to earn his way back into a role either there or up here...guys are going to pass him by...dont think its 100 percent in stone who plays every day at 3rd in Iowa but he's not being handed anything
When do you think we'll see Baez in Chicago next year?
If he progresses the same way he is now..still not till later in the year...maybe like J.Lake this year
It seems clear now that Josh Vitters, Brett Jackson - have 0 future with the Cubs at the Major League level. Almora, Bryant, Soler, Baez, Lake and Alcantara. Will the Cubs let Jackson and Vitters linger around their AAA system forever; or will the plan be to move them for whatever they can?
I'm sure move them or let them go or what not...yeah, they have fallen behind...not 10 percent out but getting there...
Any recent news regarding the renovation of Wrigley?
Theo said today structural stuff will be worked on but no major changes going into next yr..they were hopeful the clubhouse would be renovated but doesnt look that way...so nothing imminent
Now that Baez has been pulled, will he be at least working out in arizona with instructional league or is he just taking time off?
He'll go twice to AZ...in the fall and then after the holidays and work with coaches there, etc. No games or what not till spring
will we see kris bryant next year
Doubt it only because are being very conservative with their prospects..there is always a chance but I think its more likely he finishes the year at AAA...
Would u say year 2 has been a successful year of the rebuilding process?
Yes. When a top propsect has a minor league seaosn like Baez had, that alone makes it a good one...when they can get arms like arrieta and strop for feldman, thats a good move...I know winning a single A title means nothing but all those pitchers were acquisitions, etc. forget about major league level stuff...I do think its been fine...and I dont have a huge problem with Rizzo, he'll get there...And now Castro is back with old mindset...Im buyung in...I think there is a light at the end of the tunnell BARRING unforeseen flameouts by a bunch of propsects which can happen still...
How much concern is there over the lack of hitting and the regression of many Cub hitters under Sveum and his staff; especially in light of the caliber of prospects coming up through the system?
There is some but castro was a organizatioinal thing...thats on Theo etc as much on Sveum...Rizzo will be fine....but again, Castillo has PROGRESSED in 2ns half..Schierholtz a career year..but the OBP isnt there so its not been anywhere near perfect...Im just not sure of the hitting coaches, lets start there...Make no mistake I do no think Sveum is loing term answer here...just maybe one more year
Hey Jesse, what's the deal with Arrieta? I believe he can be a solid piece for the future of the team. If he doesn't pan out as a starter, any chance we could see him coming out if the bullpen late in games?
Definitely...you dont give up on that stuff..you give him every chance to figure it out...perfect spot for him to take time to get there...man, I like his stuff
What is a good timetable for the cubs to be in some sort of run in the playoffs? Also, Do you see the cubs trying to go for a big name, Top of the rotation guy?
A run? maybe 2015. I do, but not tihs offseason..one more year, folks, one more. Then things need to start moving
Why does everyone think Girardi is so great? Because he won a World series?! So did Bob Brenley. So did Larussa who had know idea who was warming up in the "11 WS. Aren't all manaers awful and you just have to hope ours makes less mistakes than the other guy? I mean they all predictably sac bunt/ Int BB/make lousy bullpen changes. Yeah Dale is bad but at least he's not Ron Washington or Ned Yost.
I dont know..ask Boston is a maanger makes a difference...Hey, Im a dusty baker fan..not many are..bringing out the best in players and putting them in a position to succeed is under rated...I think in-game moves are important as much for gaining respect of the players as it is actually winning games...I'll see this, no one can define really good or bad managers but we all know when we see them...
Any chance we could ever see Dan vogelbach in a cubs uni? All the talk of the dh coming to the NL...could you see them hanging on to him for that role?
Just dont know the answer to that question..I dont how long the DH is away from becoming reality, etc.
How soon will Olt, Bryant, and Soler be up?
Dont know, 2015 for other two...maybe longer for soler cause of injury ,etc.
Realistically, what reason do the Cubs have not to bring up Baez, Bryant, and Alcantara in June-July 2014 provided that they do well in the AFL, Spring Training, and the first few minor league months of 2014? Besides the record, Cubs fans are sick of the stop-gap players (Valbuena, Barney, Boguesevich). July 2014 would give enough time to delay the arb clock and give Cubs fans something to at least be excited about.
I actually agree with you on at least Baez and Bryant...I guess all 3 can knock on the door with great seasons next year...but they just want to be sure...I can understand that..thats the luxury of a rebuild..dont have to rush anyone
Who do you think will replace Baez and Vizcaino in AFL?
Christian Villanueva is one I could see going..
Thats it for today...getting ready for Braves/Cubs...Braves can clinch a tie for division with a win today...check out the cubs blog and follow me on twitter @espnchicubs..thanks for the questions..
