Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! Playoffs are over. Did any of you know Vijay made his Champions Tour debut last week? Should the tour hold his money til the lawsuit is settled? Are you excited for the Presidents Cup? How bout this weeks Web.com Tour finale? Here comes the heat... BRING IT!!!

Rory (Not McIroy) (Athens)

Another great ending to an awesome 2013 season! Feelings on a Bradley, Dufner pairing in the Ryder Cup next week? They seemed comfortable yesterday during the championship together.

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

They do look really comfy together. Gonna be hard to match the Keegan/Phil connection though. But would love to see Phil and Spieth play too.

Paul (Portland, OR)

Hi MC. I enjoyed the playoffs this year, and what a performance by Stenson! So, Steve Stricker gets a bizarre injury getting lead from a pencil stuck in his finger while trying to get an energy bar from his bag. What's the strangest injury you've seen or heard of?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

Still for me it's when Jesper tripped over his kids luggage in the dark busted up his hand/wrist

Jordan Spieth (Front Page of the leaderboard)

I want to be paired with Tiger in the Prez Cup...good idea?

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

Great idea. But only in FourBall. No need to put Jordan in bad spots off the tee playing Alt. shot! haha

Al (Pensacola)

Enjoy your chats Mike. Seems POY between Tiger and Phil, ROY pretty much Jordan Spieth lock. Who do you have as Comeback Player of the Year?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Ironically enough they're not doing a Comeback POY this year. Who's yours?

Bill (MD)

Jordan Speith has had an amazing rookie season to say the least. If you had to make a guess on when he'd win his first major (which I think is inevitable), what would be your answer?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

I truly believe he may win one next year. Maybe the US Open or PGA Championship. I think he'll contend at Augusta in 2015.

Shawn (Ontario)

Hey MC, how early will the President's Cup teams get together to start practicing?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

I think because they all have played Muirfield Village already the team will get there Monday and start working Tuesday. Even for first timers it's not a tough track to learn.

lefty (chicago)

Tiger or Henrik for POY definitely....who's COY ( Caddie of the Year) ? Bones ?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

Either Jim "Bones" McKay or Steve Williams and I'd give the edge to Stevie just because of how much praise Adam gave him after the Masters.

Tim (SF)

YO MC!!! lotta topics, and I'm starting with the easy one. O/U on # of tourney wins for Spieth next year. I'll put it at 2.5....what side you on?

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

He wins twice next year so I'll take the under.

Dan (CA)

Only 3 players in the last 30 years have won 5 times in a calendar year on tour. Many have won 1 major + another tournament. Phil has done it 4 times and never won a POY. If anyone other than Tiger won 5 times POY would already be a formality.

Golf Fan (Earth)

POY is NOT meant to be Mr. Congeniality of the Year. POY is NOT supposed to be challenged AGAINST one player by the media.Look at the criteria for all five men picked. Then use your head.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I have no idea what your point is. Maybe you're NOT from earth after all.

Marcus A. (Seattle, WA)

Jordan Spieth! 2nd place, is he in the top 10 favorites at majors next year? Think he will one day be number 1?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

top ten, yes, and there's a chance if he can get two wins next year, then in three years he'll start challenging for the top spot in the OWGR

Jerome (Boston)

How much do players and caddies practice together during winter?

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

gonna be a short "winter" but unless they live in the same town caddies and players usually do separate vacation times. Then players work on their own.

single digit (midwest)

lots of major tournament love for NY in the next 10 years... too much of a good thing?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

I don't think so because the courses are all big time. Not like they're going to Liberty National for a major.

DB (Ia)

MC, loved your answer in 4-ball about being tired. Guess none of these guys could be baseball players. Amazing that the last day of the tournament you didn't hear Tiger complain about being tired when he shot 4 under

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

The one thing I will say is that athletes in ALL other major sports that play golf say it's the toughest mentally and physically which tell me something. BUT, unlike in other teams sports, golfers can chose to take a week off so if you play, don't complain about being tired.

Ben (Again)

What's wrong with Liberty National? I was there for the final round of the Barclays and thought it was an incredible, if only semi-challenging, course for the pros to play...

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

The last thing we need is a "semi-challenging" golf course for a major. I don't have a problem with Liberty National for a tournament, just not a major.

Shoshana (Proctoring a Test)

BTW Speith hit 68% of his fairways this year while Tiger hit 62% (I mean yes it's a terrible stat). But we tend to underrate Tiger as a driver of the ball, or more accurately overrate everyone else, because he's the only player whose bad weeks we regularly see.

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

But now check out Spieth's Sunday scoring average compared to Tiger's...

DB (Ia)

Have you talked to any Tour or Web players about the new process to get card? Do they like it? Seems flawed to me. Golfer can have one good week, a top 10 and they have their tour card wrapped up. Doesn't seem right.

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

I'll be covering the event this week (get there in the morning) and will be asking guys about just that. Can tell you that one player I talked to said he was going to Europe because the money was better and the travel was easier. Something to keep an eye on.

Quint (Indy)

I think there should be a rule that you are not allowed on television if you think the FedeX cup point system is complicated. You get points based on your position - highest points wins - not rocket science

Ben (Again)

Hey MC - Another great year of golf, and thanks for all the tournament chats...Who was this year's biggest dissappointment? - Rory?Who was this year's biggest surprise? - (let's leave out the obvious Spieth due to rookie-ness)...Thanks!

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

I think Rory is definitely the biggest disappointment. My biggest surprise is what Stricker did on a limited schedule. It sets a scary precedent in my opinion.

Shoshana (Proctoring a Test)

The travel is easier on the European tour? I don't think they've travelled much, half the season is in Asia or the Middle East...

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Yes but they follow a pattern. And remember the Web.com on has 20 events next year with smaller purses then European Tour. This is coming from a tour player not me.

g.p. (nd)

Michael, I saw you retweeted Reilly's article about Native American nicknames. Which side of the argument do you fall on?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

I fall on the side of Reilly. That Native Americans on a whole should be the only ones who get to decide. Anyone else is just using the issue to stand on a soapbox that doesn't belong to them.

Al (Pensacola)

Comeback Player of the Year -- why not Eric Compton. Q-school to keeping his card -- with all the heart in the world.

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

I wouldn't have a problem with it but his heart surgery was a while back. What did he comeback from last year?

Coop (Shi**er)

MC-Phil hinted at a Stricker-like schedule going forward. Good or bad for a streaky player like him?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

I think he's smart. Phil was one of the guys that said the tour year was too long. So if he cuts back to 18 tournaments a year, won't bother me. Especially if he's winning two or three a year.

DB (Ia)

How happy do you think PGA tour is Vijay didn't win this weekend in his 1st start on Champions tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Thru the roof happy! I just wonder if they'll hold his money... I would. You're suing me and you want me to pay you? BAAAHAHAHA.... hang on (that's when the phone disconnects)

Shoshana (Proctoring a Test)

True on European tour money. I just wonder if this isn't a grass is always greener on the other side situation. All the Euro Tour guys say the travel over there is much harder when they come to the states.

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

when they come to the states and play the PGA Tour, not the Web.com Tour because none of them come over here to play the triple A league. Like Japanese baseball players.

Keith (Milwaukee)

MC - just wanted to say thanks for all your chat/video work Mon/Fri and from the courses. Your humor and knowledge are a great blend.

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

My pleasure. Thank you for hanging out with me.

Tim (SF)

DB (Ia) - the Champions tour wasnt on the island with the deers...those are on Maui. Vijay didnt stand a chance. LOL

lefty (chicago)

Thoughts on outsiders calling in rules violations to the tour HQ during play? Seems a little unfair to the "high profile" players to me.

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

I've changed opinions on this a few times but I think now I'm pretty set. I don't have a problem with it because if a guy's not on tv chances are he's not playing great anyway so if something gets missed not that big a deal. When the technology gets here (and we're close) every hole and every player will be recorded so using that tech to get it right is what we should do, and is what the rules say to do.

Scott (NYC)

MC - did tiger's ball move last week?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

yes, half a dimple (which seems ridiculous) BUT that is still moving. No gray area in the rules.

TyWebb (Bushwood)

Liked what you posted in 4-ball about players being "Tired" Seems like TW gets a pass but on the other hand is supposed to be the "fittest athlete on tour" can't have it both ways. Can't they ever just say, "TW played poorly, no excuses."

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

Tiger said that about himself.

Tim (SF)

Pretty compelling stuff from Stenson these past weeks. Guy clearly has guts, and the sheer stick-tuitiveness that Terrible Terry Tate can appreciate...gotta think Henrik has some serious major contentions in the next 2-3 years no?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

He'll contend next year and maybe even win.

Coop (Back in Cubicle)

Name the 4 major winners next year...no particular order

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

You first.

Ben (Again)

yeah, what Keith (Milwaukee) said!I'm just thankful that the office firewall hasn't blocked you out of my life yet!(on that note, when you stop hearing from me on a semi-regular basis, know that my fear has become reality)

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

Maybe I can send a virus that only allows y'all on my chats!! (I'm not even a LITTLE bit computer tech davy though.)

Bill (CA)

Gotta disagree with your premise that only guys playing well are on TV. Half the time the leader of Thursday's round is done playing before TV coverage has even started. And the positioning down the list matters too, especially near the cut line.

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

True but I was thinking more on the weekend when the guys start lining up to make a run at a title.

Coop (Back in Cubicle)

Tiger, Kuchar, Mickelson, Spieth

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

I'll take, Stenson, Mickelson, Fowler, and an unknown

TyWebb (Bushwood)

I wish the would rotate the Tour Championship. East Lake seems kind of boring.

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

I wouldn't be opposed to that. East Lake is a good track though. I'm not crazy about the three finishing holes.

Gus (Boston)

What do caddies do for practice during the off-season?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

I'm gonna do a video about that later this fall! ;)

Ben (Again)

What happens first? Tiger wins major #15 --- or his niece, Cheyenne, finishes in the money in ANY tournament?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

She's already won a tournament.

Ryan (Charlotte)

Hey MC - If Phil does scale back on his tournaments next year, which ones do you think he will cut from his schedule? Thanks.

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

I bet Greenbrier gets the hook first then

Ben (Again)

I'll take Stenson, Scott, Tiger, and one of the Golf Boyzzz

Quint (Indy, IN)

You said you were worried about Stricker schedule setting a precedent but last week you said only guys with certain status could play that schedule what are the rules that allowed him to do the shortened schedule

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

What I'm worried about is the guys who'd play 25 events cut to 15 (the minimum)

Fletch (Business class)

How is Tiger not a lock for POY. He has double the wins of anyone else. All of his wins are on good courses with strong fields. Seems simple.

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

I think so too

Ben (Again)

ugh, I meant "What happens first...going forwards!"

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

OOOOH... I say Tiger gets #15, she is gravitating towards the entertainment/broadcast side.

Shoshana (Proctoring a Test)

Sorry Bay Hill, Greenbrier pays $$$

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

Great point!! (cough, cough) I mean, THE PGA TOUR DOES NOT PAY APPEARANCE FEES!

lefty (chicago)

5 Guys or In-N-Out ?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

5 Guys ALL DAY! I'm an east coast boy.

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Are all of you ok with the new Web.com Tour finale format instead of Q-school?

Steve Williams Opponent (Any PGAT Course)

I understand your caddie background, but picking Steve Williams for anything based on his racial nastines to Tiger, sure makes me wonder if you're AA or not. Jeez. P.C. might keep your job, but you turn off Anglo people with that remark. NEVER FORGET!

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

I did a video with Stevie this past week that will be on our page sometime later. You only know what you saw and heard. I know the man personally and when you hear my story, you'll understand how wrong you are about him. We've all said stupid things and Steve was trying to be funny and take a little shot at Tiger, that's it. If Tiger can let it go (and it was about HIM), what's that say about you.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Jordan Spieth have a nickname?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

Not yet other than "kid"

Sean (Cleveland)

Whoa!! Calm down there dude. Both Tiger and Stevie have moved on from that. You should move on too.

DB (Ia)

I still don't see the old "Fall Finish" tournaments getting any big names there, just because they have Fed Ex points now

Shoshana (Proctoring a Test)

Guys can finish 3rd in one tournament and lock up a tour card, and the tour thought q-school's 6 rounds was to capricious :)

Bryce (NC)

Im ok with the new finals. I enjoyed Q school tho too.

DB (Ia)

No, should have to have more than 1 good week to get you're card.

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

And that's what their argument about q-school was... this is the same thing.

Coop (Back in Cubicle)

I think the new program will be tweaked over the next few years making it better than Q School. I like the play your way in over a series of events as opposed to having a good 5 days and maybe taking a card from a legit contender.

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

6 days but I see your point

Bryce (NC)

Fowler winning a major MC??? I love your stuff but if he doesnt pick it up soon he will be out of the top 50 in the world? I dont even think he is a top 15ish American player

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Next year he'll be healthy. This year he was not.

Andrew (WI)

Majors next year: Day/Mickelson/Day/McIlroy. Got a hunch.

Andrew (WI)

I'm fine with the new Q school, but make it simpler. Too many golfers with different agendas. Give the web.com top 25 some bonus money and tell them to sit out.

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

One of my big problems with it is that the Leading money winner plays in the series. He can't better his position which is taking a chance away from someone else.

Bryce (NC)

Majors next year: Snedeker, Kuchar, Woods, Woods. American Domination!!!!

Steve (Cheney)

More majors, Phil or Rory and Jordan Spieth combined?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Jordan and Rory combo. Spieth is the real deal.

DB (Ia)

Why doesn't Zach Johnson get any love as one of the best American players? 10 wins & major

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

because his style of play isn't sexy. Doesn't bomb it off the tee and doesn't do crazy shots around the greens. He's the ultimate blue collar golfer. He needs to be celebrated though.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Chance of you doing a couple caddie interviews during the Presidents Cup?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

Great idea! I'll ask a few of the guys if they'll talk about what goes into being a Presidents Cup caddie.

Aaron (Wisco)

Spieth is the real deal...until he switches to NIKE equipment

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

I don't see that happening

Chris (Chicago)

So not picking Tiger for a major next year...then when do you see his next one?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

2015

Matt D. (Woodbury, MN)

How does someone with amazing ability (Westwood, Stenson) just lose it like they both did? Do you think it's more mental than something going on with their swing?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

It's both. First there's a swing flaw that gets exposed in crunch time, then mentally you can't get it out so you fall deeper into a pit... Barkley is the extreme, tour players don't fall that bad but like that.

Robert (Littleton, co.)

what's the deal with the player of the year and Tiger? You said that Adam Scott was the winner weeks ago! lol

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

LOL!! Tells you how smart I am!!

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

Told y'all it would go too fast! Well I'm off to TPC Sawgrass (Valley Course) but we'll chat again on Friday! Until then, if you need me...ESPNCaddie@gmail.com or on twitter @ESPNCaddieHave a great week everyone!MC

Robert (Littleton, co.)

You are one of the freshest breaths of air there at ESPN! Dude...you keep it real!

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

I will, I promise
