Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:01 PM)

Just finished watching offense and defense on coach's tape. Y'all ready. Let's roll. Yo, gotta get a red bull first. 30 seconds.

Adam Tate (Newport News, VA)

I just read that A. Spencer is going to require another surgery that will but him out for the rest of the year. What does this mean for the Cap? Do they get any back since he didn't play? Or is there a minimum playing time requirement on franchise tags?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:02 PM)

It means he gets all of his money - $10.6 million - but it also means he does not have a contract next year and he is coming off major surgery. He's only getting an incentive laden deal next year.

Greg (CT)

I know it's a small sample size but based on what you've seen out of Selvie thus far how does he stack up against Spencer? I know he's been playing well and pressuring QB a lot.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

Selvie has done a good job. He's with his 4th team in 4 seasons. He's not as good a player as a healthy Spencer - and it's not close. The question is not whether he can do good job for 3G. It's whether he can do it for a season. We'll see.

Greg (CT)

In an article or post the other day you said Cowboys won't pay old regarding Hatcher, after his locker room speech (becoming vocal leader they need) and more importantly performance you still feel that way?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

Actually, I wrote, "smart don't pay age, so this should be hatcher's last season." Too early to say. Either you page age, or you don't. Hatcher probably wants more than Dallas willing to play. His performance this season could change their mind

DJ (Carolina)

Over the years, we've seenthe cowboys put great, but undisciplined talent on the field. As a result they always seem to find a way to lose instead of finding a way to win. For the first time it feels like this team is made up of "smart" guys with more discipline that will find ways to win. Do you see this? is there anything tangible to prove/disprove?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

Garrett slowly putting his stamp on team. That's why he's always talking about the "right kind of guys" and guys who play a certain way. he knows exactly how he wants to build the team. He just needs time to get it done. Not as many penalties. Play the play - not the score. They're searching for consistency. We'll see.

Kenyatta Adams (Roselle, Nj)

Good Afternoon Jean. I would like to know your thoughts on , The Boys trading two 5th round picks(2014,2015) for Josh Gordon. Miles Austin always has Hamstring injuries/30 years old and Josh is only 22 years old / he is a good deep threat . Have a good day!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

No idea why so many folks want a dude in his 2nd season who's one dirty pee test away from a 1-yearr suspension. You guys follow the Cowboys closely. Does that sound like Garrett's "right type of guy"? Seriously, does it? No, no, no.

Lance (NYC)

Hey JJT,Forget the W or L's, Im starting to see the seeds of J Garrett's pre season speech (made famous in P King's MMQB) coming to fruition. I see effort, I see togetherness, I see toughness, I see the start of "a new program" for the Dallas Cowboys. Do you see some it as well?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

I saw it last year. That's why I wrote then, Jerry should give him an extension. He just needs to win enough games to keep job

Malcolm Shipp (Memphis, TN)

What up Jean,With the news that Anthony Spencer might have to have season ending knee surgery, do you think Selvie and Hayden can continue their level of play for an entire season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

Hayden isn't much different than Selvie. He's getting opportunity and taking advantage. You talk about relentless play, go watch Hayden rush the passer then chase down tavon Austin from behind. That's' relentless and the kind of effort you get from dudes who have struggled to make roster

juanito juanito (chihuahua, mexico)

what you know about the rattlif progress, is he doing is rehab well ?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

no idea. Haven't seen him lately. Out of sight, out of mind. The games moves on. It waits for no one, especially an aging dude with an awful attitude and a broken down body.

RC [via mobile]

Did Anthony Spencer pull one over on the Cowboys? Should JD be fired? This is not about Wash...no groceries in the cupboard. RC

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

Spencer got hurt after he signed deal. It's football, it happens. JD has built this team. he shouldn't be fired after one disappointing season. Neither should Wash. You tell me what manager can win with this raggedy offense. You fire the manager, when he's the primary reason you're losing.

Chris (Phoenix, Az)

Do you expect the cowboys Oline to keep being as effective as it has in the passing game? Also do you see Romo taking care of the ball a little more than he usually does? He seems to be doing less scrambling and trying to fit in throws.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:15 PM)

:Last year, Romo averaged 7.78 per attempt, near top of the league. This year, he's at 6.70. He's throwing considerably more short passes. It's too early to now yet whether this is a trend. I have seen him throw the ball away 2-3 times this season instead of taking sack or making dumb throw. Progress.

Chris (Dyer,Indiana)

JJT,Hello. Enjoy your work. How big of an impact do you think losing Spencer for the year is with the potential emergence of Slevie? Thanks!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

Selvie is not nearly as good as Spencer, so it's a big loss. And if Selvie or some other lineman gets hurt, then you have another big problem. They will miss Spencer, their defensive MVP - some of y'all forgot that - this year

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Who sat Jason Garrett down, put a finger in his face, and gave him a 10 minute verbal lashing? I ask because it looks like he got serious about improving the running game.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

Maybe, he gave it Callahan and Romo

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Spencer has made plenty of money. Any of the chatters in here would jump at the chance to have already made tens of millions of dollars by the time there are 30. I do feel bad for him that he can't play, but as far as his contract situation goes, then he should have asked to play for less money if he wanted a long-term deal, but he got greedy and had to play for the franchise tag. If he thoughts his knee was much worse and wanted to lock up more guaranteed money, then that was unethical on his part because he would be trying to trick the organization. I think he'll be fine taking home that fat pay check over the next 3 months along with the millions upon millions he has already made.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

You care more about other people's money than any person I've ever had an interaction with. Borderline unhealthy.

Big Al the skiers pal (god's country)

JJT, pokes are 5th in scoring offense and 9th in scoring defense. Can they maintain that in your opinion?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

Defense, overall, is playing well. I'd wait 6 games before I got hyped one way another. We still don't know what we don't know

Jake (Dallas)

Biggest challenge for Dallas D vs Chargers O this week is...?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Sorry. This is my last day on Rams game. Don't look at San Diego until tomorrow

Shawn (NC Mtns)

Hi JJT, Hope all is well. Anyway thought or predictions on how Dallas will contain Payton when they play Denver on 10-6? Payton is looking might good. An no, I'm not a Denver fan. DC all the way!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

One game at a time bro

Richard Duncan (Henderson, TX)

So. Jerry is often the brunt of jokes -- and rightfully so. Does he get credit for signing Church, adding backups to injury prone miles and demarco, and drafting a center to solidify the line?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:23 PM)

He'll deserve it, if it plays out like this all year. It's so early in the season, we need another 2-3 weeks to get a real feel for the team and what it can and can't do

Nate (Houston)

Two questions. I know Demarco Murray had a great game against the rams but did it seem that he gave up on some plays towards the end of his runs? And also we played the chiefs in KC a few years ago. Why didn't we play them in Dallas this year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

I think he got tired at the end of each of his long runs and decided it was better to either step out of bounds or cover up the ball to ensure he didn't fumble at the end. That's different than giving up on a run. He's one of the league's best finishers. He drops the shoulders and delivers punishment most of the time

Wilks (Philly )

Our next 2 game are against the charger n Denver If we go 2-0 in those game r the boys on to something this season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

Why don't we see what happens this week

Justin (FT. Worth)

How well is Barry Church playing? To my amateur eyes, he's been all over the field and is finally giving the Cowboys strong safety play they've been missing for years.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

Church had an outstanding game against St.L. He was all over the field and delivered some big hits. he's done a nice job 3 weeks into the season

Jason (Dallas)

How at age 31 has Jason Hatcher developed into a beast at DT? Is it the new scheme, Marinelli or just being a late bloomer?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

Most players have their most success when they get placed into the right system that enhances their strengths and limits their weaknesses. This scheme fits hatcher's strengths perfectly. He's athletic and can get low enough - even at 6-6 - to play with good leverage. He's been a beast

coconut (Hawaii)

Running game working or Rams defense not working?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

They blocked it well. The offensive line played well. MUrray ran well. The Rams have an undersized DL and they got pushed around. Perfect storm.

pj (midlo)

Hi JJ, how do you see the Boys attacking the Bolts this week - do you see Murray, Bryant or Romo as the Bell Cow this week - San Diego's weakness is what?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

don't look at next opponent until Wednesday

Tommy Sears (Sumter, SC)

Tony Romo only has 2 turnovers this season and the INT can't really be blamed on him, yet his overall numbers are down... Is this the formula for Dallas to win the division?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

That's what we're trying to figure out. He's being much more conservative with the ball. A lot more underneath routes. We'll see how this formula works.

Elvis (Tupelo, Mississippi)

Interesting to see how Rob Ryan has done well thus far in NO. I think he is a good motivator and that no coordinator in football could have made that patched up group late last year into an effective D. Thoughts?

JJT
  (1:31 PM)

The season is young. He was an obvious scapegoat, but that's what happens when your team goes 8-8 for second consecutive year. His scheme works, but it is complicated. Cowboys opted for simplicity. This is much easier. But if players struggle this one will get scrapped too eventually

Shawn (NC)

What's the deal with Josh Brent? I thought he was supposed to be in court this month. Just curious about his status

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

I think his trial is starting pretty soon. I'm pretty sure it was pushed back.

Terry Elliott Dallas, TX [via mobile]

Still not sold on Demarco and was curious about your thoughts?

JJT
  (1:33 PM)

He's a really good runner. He's tough and has excellent vision. He's a complete back because he blocks and catches. What he doesn't do is make people miss and sometimes he needs a little more patience to set up blocks downfield

Jeremy (Arlington)

what do you make of the reports that ownership pushed for Garza? is there any truth to that? if so who leaks that kind of information? Ryan? Daniels? the owners? your thoughts?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

haven't seen that report. I would find it hard to believe. Ownership generally lets baseball people do their thing

Terry Elliott Dallas, TX [via mobile]

The Astros are nice version of cough syrup for the Rangers but if we make the playoffs what is are chances?

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

with Yu, Holland and Garza and that BP. They have a puncher's chance and no one would want to deal with them

Big Tex (Amarillo)

Do you think this years Rangers melt down is worse than last years? It feels like it has been going on forever.

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

last yer worse. This year was offensively challenged from start. Last year, Hamilton quit on team. These Rangers haven't quit - they're offense just isn't good enough

Austin (St. Louis)

How good has Brandon Carr been except for the pick six I havent heard much about him but is that a good thing for a corner?

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

He's been pretty good. He's a good player - not a great player. He gives up some plays, but he's not a problem

Shawn (Wilkesboro, NC)

Thanks for answering all of our questions. We fans really do appreciate it.

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

pleasure is mine

Brendan (Houston)

What's your opinion on how JJ Wilcox played Sunday?I didn't see any glaring deficiencies at the safety position so it must have been adequate. I don't know what it is, but I feel better about him than and safety (aside from Church) that we have had in quite some time.

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

solid first game. He'll make some plays before the season ends because he's athletic and puts a charge into everyone who enters his zone

Brian (Texas)

On Romo and his propensity for shorter passes this year, is that a result of wanting to get the ball out quickly to avoid sacks? I heard the great Bob Sturm wonder if Romo has lost some of his nerve and is tired of all the criticism so he's gone away from his old gunslinger days to be a more conservative QB.

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

I think it's more about trying to protect the ball and it could be the result of Callahan calling plays. I'd like to get some answers this week. I find it interesting

Rich (Vermont)

Hi, Cowboys currently in 1st place with 2-1 record and 7 games before the bye, are they good enough to go 5-2 over the next 7 weeks?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

I'm like Garrett. I only worry about this week.

Steve (Philly)

Will Miles Austin be gone at the end of the year?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

I don't know. It'll depend on his performance and that of Terrance Williams

Chris (Phoenix, Az)

With the ups and downs in the season. How big would a win be this week against the chargers especially with the eagles going up against the Broncos

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

There's a reason why the Cowboys keep saying we focus on ourselves not other teams. Stop worrying about who else wins or loses. It's not about other teams. It's about Cowboys getting better and improving. Do that and wins, losses and NFC East race will take care of itself.

Thomas (Austin )

Do you think it is a good idea to start Scandrick over Claiborne even after Mo is healthy?

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

no

Steve (Philly)

I wish Bryan was my boss....review time is coming up

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

me too

Steve (Philly)

Biggest surprise/disappointment so far this year for Dallas? I say Doug Free's play is a surprise...Claiborne disappointment..

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

surprise: Selvie and haydenDisappointment: spencer out for year

Michael (Dallas)

Do you buy the notion that the Cowboys responded to the media criticism last week and that's the reason they ran the ball so much? I would like to think they are above listening to the noise but who knows.

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

nope. No team that's any good EVER reacts to media. They needed to run the ball because it was common sense. You can't throw the ball 70 percent of time and consistently win.

Steve (Philly)

Do you think Romo is being a bit too cautious?

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

no. not yet. Let's see what happens over next few weeks.

Paul (Albany, OR)

Rams fan here - can you give me your take on how bad they looked please? Dallas dominated but was it a case of "man the Rams sure suck" or "boy the Cowboys played their most complete game in a while?" Thank you

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

Both. Both lines were manhandled

Kris McCluskey (Pocahontas, Arkansas)

With Miles always nursing a hamstring it is a darn good thing they drafted Terrance Williams. How do you think he is performing as a Rookie and how long do you think it will take Romo to get comfortable enough to through the ball his way more often?

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

His job is to stretch the field and make plays. He has a couple of 20-yard catches which is good. If he had made any bl;ock at all on 2Q run, Murray would've walked into end zone. Instead, he was tackled and they settled for a FG

mrstrong72 (Las Vegas)

With Spencer gone for the season, do having Marinelli at coach gives you confidence that our defense will continue to get pressure?

JJT
  (1:50 PM)

Not really. He can't turn me and you into viable pass rushers. He's gotta have something to work with. Another injury and there's going to be some issues

JJT
  (1:50 PM)

yes

Rex82288 (Tampa)

In the past it sure seemed like the Boys were reluctant to play rookies. Is Garrett more committed to getting youth on the field? Escobar, Wilcox, T Williams. I would think this is a good thing for the future.

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

I think he likes this rookie class, he drafted each of them with a purpose and he's letting them play

mitch (chi-city)

how do u think the stars will do this year? the new additions should be fun to watch

JJT
  (1:52 PM)

I know the season starts in a week or so, but I haven't paid much attention to Stars, especially in relation to other teams in the conference

Richard Duncan (Henderson, TX)

Do you think DeMarco can maintain the momentum from the Rams game, or was it a flash in the pan?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

depends on whether the play-caller, the Oline and the receivers will maintain the same momentum

Redd (Litchfield Park, AZ)

I have always thought that AT&T Stadium was not the best place for home field advantage. When I was there 2 years ago, there were too many distractions. Fans were so awed, they never focused on the field. How can Jerry change this?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

if the team wins and plays well, the crowd will be more than loud enough

Mike (Jersey)

I think the Boys offense runs so much better when Romo's passing yards are in the 200s than in the 400s. The ability to control the ball last week was terrific to see.

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

he's 21-4 and won 9 in a row when he throws fewer than 30 times

Greg (Ontario, Canada)

Do you think the Cowboys have finally gotten over their issue of starting young O linemen with Leary and Frederick? We have to continue to play and develop young players there

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

it looks that way and each is doing a solid job, thus far

Brendan (Houston)

How do you think Demarcus Ware is adjusting to playing DE? I know his credited tackles are down, but man, out of that 4 point stance he pancaked Long a couple times and tripped over his prone body likely costing him another sack or two, What a beast!

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

he was in beast mode sunday. 6T, 2 sacks, 3 TFL and 2 QB hits.

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

great chat today. LEt's do it again next week. U can always hit me on twitter at @JJT_ESPNDallas
