Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to the fastest hour in golf! Was anyone surprised that Tiger and Jordan won? Do you like Q-school being gone? What's you're plans for the Presidents Cup? BRING IT!!!

KJ ((Not Choi))

what kind of payout will caddies get for the Prez cup?

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

I think it's around a grand, but they also get all their clothes, hotel, food, and transportation taken care of as well.

Chris (Chicago)

When they talk about priority with the web.com guys - what does that mean exactly?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

Basically it's like this for the first 6 events. The order in which you finish on the money list on the regular season Web.com Tour (25 spots) is merged with the top 25 from this four event series... 1,1. 2,2. 3,3 and so on

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Michael Putnam is Number 1 on the regular season money list so he's 1a, the winner of this series money title will be 1b

Chris (Chicago)

Tiger created the majors are most important talk... if he finishes with 100+ career wins and say 16 majors how could he NOT be considered the best of all time? The only reason seems because he stated the majors issue...

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

By starting that talk though he put himself in a position where by not at least tying Jack the debate will always be there. Almost like, yeah Dan Marino was great but how great was he if he never won a Super Bowl.

Paul (Portland, OR)

MC, I'm jealous but perhaps maybe not so jealous. A friend of my dad's got a deal for a great rate to play Bandon Dunes this weekend, so my dad's got a foursome going there. On the other hand, they'll be trying to dodge a couple of storms and potentially playing in British Open type of weather!

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Playing that course in tough conditions might make the experience that much better. Can't wait to go play it myself someday. Now I'm jealous of you!

TyWebb (Bushwood)

Let's be honest, it's simply hard to get excited about the President's Cup, I mean, it hasn't ever really been that close? Why is that?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I think because the "World" team. When we play just Europe, those guys grew up playing against one another and have a bond that guys thrown together from throughout the rest of the world don't have and never will. That being said it can still be fun and dramatic (remember Mike Weir beating Tiger in Canada, the country almost shut down for the day)

Mike (Huntsville)

When your guy gets cut, do you have $ games lined up in town, is it onto the next stop for practice or back home for a bit?

Chris (Chicago)

The US MVP next be will be who and why?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Jordan Spieth. He's got the game and the mental toughness. The big thing will be for him not to have a sophomore slump, but I think (after talking to him today) that he's still hungry which is bad news for everyone else.

TyWebb (Bushwood)

So TW is POY, can we now get an end to all the articles and discussions about it? UGH.. who honestly cares!

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Deep down I think you have a secret crush on him. Cause for someone who says they are tired of ALL the coverage about him, you never comment about other specific golfers. If you're so tired of him, why is his name in your mouth so much?

KJ ((Not Choi))

in general...who would you say knows the rules book better, the player or caddy?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Players definitely but the caddies are always the ones to say, "let's call over an official just to cover our butts."

TyWebb (Bushwood)

4 rules infractions for TW this year, think he needs a refresher?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

I rest my case

Mike P (Greater KC)

Did the players get it right this year with Tiger winner POY.. I know he won 5 times but one was a top tier tourney with the Players... Adam Scott and Phil won multiple times and won majors.. Wouldnt giving it to Jordan Speith who had no tour card status and almost wins the Tour Championship better finishes in majors than Tiger and top ten in money been a better play than Tiger... Not trying to discount(too much) 5 wins but seems like other players had better years this year

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

I would say that Jordan Spieth may have a better case for it than Adam or Phil because of where he started but 5 wins is above and beyond what anyone else had accomplished.

Tom (Verona, WI)

MC, I heard you were named best golf analyst. Congrats!

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

HAHA!! You heard that interview with Prim today... all about confidence my friend! LOL

TyWebb (Bushwood)

My point was, there were more articles written here and other media outlets that basically argued with themselves, it took away from some of the other stories as they were occurring. That's all, I'm guessing had TW played better in the playoffs that would have been the story. To me Phil should have been POY, that final round in The Open was amazing.

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Understood but the award isn't for player of one week, it's for the year. If Phil or Adam would have won the FedEx Cup they would have won POY but they didn't. And to your comment I didn't post... Did you read Farrell? See my Web.com tour championship coverage, how bout Bob's birdies and bogeys. None of that stuff matters to you, all you care about is Tiger getting any press. Maybe it's you who's in his back pocket taking deep breaths.

Chris (Chicago)

It is PLAYER OF THEY YEAR _ Not have a great round... or great story. Tiger was the best player all year - stats don't lie

Chris (Chicago)

Is Foley's status with Tiger in question if the major streak doesn't end by the Open Championship?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

I don't think so. What other coach is out there Tiger could go too? Foley also has a pretty solid stable of guys with pretty good records in their own rights.

TyWebb (Bushwood)

And I totally get it, 5 wins is awesome too!

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

Nice of you to say. Glad you can appreciate it no matter who accomplishes it.

Chris (Chicago)

MC why not just have a real offseason like other sports? Basically from October 1 - December 31...

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Because so many corporate sponsors throw enough money at the PGA Tour and want their own event. Supply and demand.

Aaron (Wisco)

who gets over the "major hump" first... TW or Jordan?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Wow, great question... I'm gonna say Jordan wins a major next year before Tiger. Maybe the US Open

Tom (Verona, WI)

The PGA uses a points formula for its POY award. The Tour uses a vote. They agreed this year, just like they have since 1992.

No question (All Over)

This should shut up the naysayers: Players who won POY and NO Major:Jack NicklausTom Watson 3 timesJohnny MillerGreg NormanTom KiteNick PricePaul AzingerLanny WadkinsCory PavinkJim FurykLuke DonaldAlso, "4?' infractions. Media had a hand in assigning one, definitely.

Robb (Colorado)

What do caddies normally get if their guy is an MC? Travel $$? Or, if on salary their normal check?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Caddies get a weekly salary so that if their player MC's they can still pay the travel expenses. But in some cases (depending on the city) it doesn't cover it. It's why caddying can be a hard road life if you have a player that is missing alot of cuts

Curtis (Lynchburg, VA)

Alright Big Mike I know that you've been putting everyone else on the spot this last week about who they would like to play with in the Presidents Cup. So I'm going to ask you, if you got to play in the Presidents Cup what format would you want to play(besides singles)? And who would you want as a playing partner?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

I was afraid someone was gonna flip the script on me! But I thought about it. I'd wanna play 4 ball...

Shaft Designer (Just West of Torrey)

As I eat this microwave pizza I wish I was eating on the caddie wagon. My favorite part of going to tour events. I loved the grilled ham and cheese, any favorite of yours on the wagon?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

Shaft Designer, every morning I had a sausage egg and cheese on an english muffin, or if we teed off late I'd have a tuna on whole wheat with tomato and spicy mustard. The banana pudding they made was so good you'd slap your mom for the last bowl!

Shoshana (Grading)

To be fair Jack actually started the major talk (along with AP). It helps discount what Snead did.

Mike P (Greater Kc)

Scott has 2 wins (a major) and 2 finishes in the top 10 in majors; Phil has 3 wins and a major; Tiger has 3 wins (2 WGC events and the Players) and two other wins in tourneys not everyone in the top ten plays. & 2 top ten finishes in majors.. Not including the wins at Arnies place and Torrey Pines; I really dont see an edge to anyone if you throw out the 2 victories at Arnies and Torrey Pines

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

BAAHAHA!! "If you throw out the 2 wins..." You just throwing out wins? C'MON MAN!

Tom (Verona, WI)

Nice videos on caddies getting pranked during the playoffs. Have you been pranked?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

Oh yeah. They got me with one they got a bunch of rookies over the years... stuff the bag full of water bottles hidden under rain gear and at the bottom of the bag. THANK GOODNESS it was only before a practice round. Some guys weren't as lucky!

Ben (Columbus)

MC-- Heading out to the Presidents Cup Next week on Friday. What is the best way to watch it in person as all the groups are so bunched up. Stay at a hole for groups to come through, follow a match, or both?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Stay at a hole on the front then catch a group on the back

Shoshana (Grading)

@Mike P did you really just try to argue that a guy who won once (the Deere) should be player of the year over a guy who won 5x (including the PLAYERS & 2 WGC's)? I must be living in an alternate universe

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

I was also hearing Twilight Zone music playing in my head as I read that from Mike P

Chris (Chicago)

I love that the Cup is playing on a par 72 course - chances for scoring makes those things great! Any hole that will play to driveable yardage?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

I'm sure they'll move the tee up on 14 and make it drivable

Andrew (WI)

By the way, if we're saying Phil had 3 wins to Tiger's 5 (Scottish Open), then we can't vote on POY for another couple months because Stenson still has the Race to Dubai to boost his own resume

Keith H (Seattle)

If it were anyone other than Tiger, five wins would be unanimous. The fact there is discussion just shows how he is put on a monstrously different level of expectations.

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

Amen

Aaron (Wisco)

whoa... I want a sip of what Mike P is drinkin

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

You might get called down to human resources if you drink it! HAHA

Mike P (Greater Kc)

I just feel that that looking at it that everyone say 5 wins and was like Tigers back... I get that it takes into points and all that... but until Tiger wins a major and can prove that he is back... i will hold players who win majors and win more of the top tier tourneys in higher regard than Tiger and his year that he had this year

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Two WGC wins not "top tier" enough for ya?

Andrew (WI)

If you could pick any single course to host any team match play event, which would it be?

John (Denver)

MC - Politics and corp "incentives" and logistics be damned. YOU get to pick one U.S. course and one Euro Course for the next couple of Ryder cups. Where are we playing?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

In the US I wanna play the Ryder Cup at TPC Scottsdale... can you imagine what the 16th hole would be like for the Ryder Cup?! And in Europe if they played at Kilspindie (you never heard of it but I played it and trust me)

Shoshana (Grading)

Any chance we can get some inside the locker room stuff at next week's Pres Cup? (especially since the ping pong competition in the US locker room might be more competitive than the matches)

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

I'll ask permission to video an exchange between a couple heavyweights. Keep your fingers crossed.

Mike P (Greater Kc)

Aaron it will be the same thing your badgers will be drinking when the buckeyes run buckshot all over you tomorrow night

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Tailgate fight... I LOVE IT!!

Nemes (P-Town)

If we don't hear from Mike P for the next 30 days, we'll assume you suspended him (on the down low a la the PGAT).

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

I would NEVER do that just because I disagree with an opinion. You all know I give everyone a voice here. Everyone deserves that.

Mike (Huntsville)

What yardage adjustments do you use for uphill & downhill shots? Do you try to use the actual slope for calculation during practice rounds? Just eyeball / swag it?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

that's what we use the lasers for during the practice rounds. and the new yardage books have some of the percentages in them already.

Sun Shine (Hot, Cloudy, No rain S. Fl)

Nice to know, MC. You already posted my pesudonym! Thanks.

Keith H (Seattle)

I honestly think Tiger's run in the majors is over. Between all the things that have happened since the 2008 US Open and his knee troubles, that's my belief. But what a way to go out: Broken leg, playoff, Rocco, 91 holes...I think the Golf Gods said, "This is it for you, but what a way to go!"

Tom (Verona, WI)

Zero majors for PGA Tour POY winners in 2009 (Woods), 2010 (Furyk), and 2011 (Donald).

Andrew (WI)

If you're interested in past precedent, in '96 Phil won 4 times and lost POY to a guy with 2 wins and 1 major. Now, 5 is more than 4, but 4 wasn't enough that year

Mike P (Greater Kc)

I counted those.. the wins at the Farmers and Torrey Pines are what i would consider the non top tier tourneys...

Mike P (Greater Kc)

highest top ten player at years end to play the farmers Brandt Snedeker who ended the year 5th... Highest top ten player who played at Arnies tourney when tiger won was Justin Rose he is 9th... The 2 WGC events will have higher ranked players and so will the players

Chris (Chicago)

So I guess Mike P discounts Tiger's 65 other PGA wins

Nemes (P-Town)

Throw out 2 wins?! How many players even won twice this year?! Tiger was POY unless Adam or Phil won the FedEx Cup and even then, it would be a toss-up. This vote shouldn't haven even been close. 5 wins in one year is ridiculous, we are just spoiled by Tiger's past that he is competing against himself!

Jefe (MN)

I picture Harig going all "Red Auerbach" with a big stogie after TW won POY....what's the inside scoop?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Back in your mom's basement again Jefe... just like I pictured you. Wash that t-shirt and fill out the job apps like you were told! HAHA

Nemes (P-Town)

Some opinions are wrong: Tiger is not one of the top 100 golfers of all time = lifetime suspension from chats.

Jefe (MN)

Dude - that's just hurtful. Have a good weekend.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Thanks for chat, MC! Cracked me up

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

Nah... the hour went fast, but you gotta say much worse stuff for me to kick you out! Same time Monday kids!!Have a great weekend, be safe, play well!@ESPNCaddie on Twitter or ESPNCaddie@gmail.com if you need me before then.Thanks. MC
