With the return of Exum for the Hokies, what do you think the best set up is in the back with that defense?
Boy that is a great question, Tim. I have been going around and around on that one. At this point, I think you have to keep starting Facyson until you see where you stand with Exum. I would ease Exum back in slowly and then work them both as much as possible. VT has a wealth of riches in that secondary at this point. Given the way Facyson has been playing, it makes sense to incorporate Exum slowly and that will benefit both players.
Hi AA who do you think will win the n.c.state wake forest game this weekend?and why?
Check out the predictions post from this AM for a full rundown. I picked NC State based on the fact that Wake simply has no offense, nor any idea how to fix its offense at this point.
Hello AA,Do foresee most teams in the ACC (BC, FSU, Miami. NC State, Syracuse, Pitt) and all conferences for that matter, moving to a spread offense? (using read options etc..) I understand that one team must have the right personnel, like a DT qb, but i believe most QB's are athletic enough to run this offense. And besides, in my opinion, its about making the right read and not necessarily being the fastest player out there. What do you think?
I do not think every single team will run the spread offense. Some of the teams you mention already do, by the way. I think you can run pro-style with some spread principles but I do not think that is the only way to run an offense. Just like 4-3 or 3-4 is not the only way to run a defense. Gotta go with the style/scheme the coach believes will win. And as we have seen from the SEC recently, pro-style has been the winner with Bama.
not sure you'll see much of Exum this week end. The backfield has been solid so far this year. I anticipate he will spell Kendall Fuller and Bonner...
Eric, it is a good problem to have. They do not need Exum to start immediately to shore up a weak part of the defense. That is why it makes most sense to incorporate him slowly and see where/how he can best contribute.
Did you catch that Winston Hail Mary? Just HOW good is he??
Oh I saw it. Several times on Saturday, then again on the ESPN clip Monday. He is fantastic, Jessie. I am more and more convinced he will win a Heisman before he leaves Tallahassee. I mean 4 games into his career and he looks like he has played 40 games.
Look I'm a Clemson fan and I'm terrified of VTs defense...now with Exum coming back and their outstanding freshman corner moving to reciever they're even better...if logan plays like he did against georgia tech and the corner brings even more life to the offense...they'd be scary good....just a typical nightmare I dream every night
So, Roy, you have more nightmares about VT than Florida State?
Do you think Golden if Golden was to get an offer from USC he would leave Miami? I see him as an East Coast guy myself.
I have no idea, Jim. Too tough to work in hypotheticals at this point.
Other than losing DEs, didn't FSU return quality DTs, LBs, and a good secondary? The defense looks like paper. I know Pruitt recruits well but this scheme looks sad. I don't think DTs like Goldman or McAllister are substitute DEs.
I am not sure that anybody thought FSU would be as good this year as last year given all the personnel losses and the change in coordinator/scheme. I still think Florida State is working through some of these changes and trying to figure out what works best. I agree some of the switches have been questionable, especially the ones you mentioned above, but there is time to adjust and get better.
Seems in the past Golden/D'Onofrio defenses have held up well against the option attack. Does that continue Saturday?
The last two years Miami has held GT under 300 yards rushing and won. I am going to say that streak continues this year. GT was out of sorts last week. I do credit VT for doing that, but at the same time, the Jackets had 3 turnovers and 6 penalties on offense. At some point there has to be accountability there. Miami D is improved. So that is why I picked Miami.
Andrea, do you think Maryland will catch FSU looking ahead, or Clemson suffering from a letdown, and upset one of the ACC favorites?
Going to say no on that one, Tony.
Can we at least wait until Winston plays some good competition before annointing him as the next heisman!!!!!
Steve, the skill he showed in that Hail Mary goes beyond the type of defense he played against in that game. I realize FSU has not played a Top 10 defense yet, but nonetheless, I have to give credit to any QB who completes 73 percent of his passes in the first 4 games of his career. I don't care who you play, that is pretty terrific.
With all the coaching turnover, what ACC coach is most likely to be moving at season's end to some bigger program (not the NFL)?
Miami Hurricanes are just crushing teams right now! How good can the Miami Hurricane team be and will they be tested when they play against Georgia Tech this weekend?
I appreciate the Miami fan enthusiasm, but let us come back down to earth and realize Savannah State and USF are two of the worst programs in their respective divisions. I believe GT will give Miami a test. I nearly picked the Jackets to win so I will not be surprised if they do.
FSU put up 45 points on Maryland last year and they lost quite a few of their defensive players to the draft and injuries. Our offense seems to be clicking even better with Jameis at the helm. Why are score predictions putting us below the 40 mark?
The Maryland defense is much better than a year ago, J. Now I realize that people are going to shout that down because "Maryland has not played anybody," but this defense does have 13 turnovers (No. 5 in FBS) and shut out West Virginia, which just scored 30 in an upset win over Oklahoma State. So that would be the explanation.
Should Clemson be worried about Miami in the ACCCG? Assuming they beat FSU of course
Miami should be worried about Florida State and Virginia Tech ... and VIRGINIA, Tim.
Is the ACC standing pat on playing the championship game in Charlotte - or will it be moved eventually?
The ACC will make an official announcement around the time of this year's championship game but Charlotte is the favorite to hang on to the game.
Which team has the best defense in the ACC?
Do you think Stephen Morris is overrated at this point? He looked lost versus UF. Scouts love him because of the big arm but I worry about his consistency as we head into conference play.
Gary, I think that is a valid concern. I mean all we have seen from his body of work this year were 2 up and down games vs. FAU and Florida, incompletes vs. two awful teams, Savannah State and USF. I need to see more out of Morris before I say he is an elite QB this year.
Does the U need to concern itself with the NCAA or is the Shapiro fiasco deemed over?
It has to concern itself with the NCAA until the case is over. The NCAA has yet to announce its ruling so this is still an ongoing matter.
Could we possibly see Lane Kiffin coaching in the ACC next season???
I cannot see Lane Kiffin getting another HC job any time soon. Or ever. Would you hire him?
That same WVU team that got shut out also made 21 roster changes the next week and beat OK St. Defnitely not the same team Maryland beat. Granted both FSU and UMD competition thus far has been subpar.
Fair enough. Trickett did the trick, so to speak.
Last year's GT game was when i knew for sure Miami had a winner in Golden, with him on the ground hugging Malcolm Lewis after the gruesome injury. Just sayin.
The fact that Lewis is back is pretty incredible. Kudos to him in his return.
Andrea, what do you predict VT and Miamis records to be when they finally meet? And looking at the VT D vs. Miami O matchup at this point, who do you think has the advantage?
Let me see here ... I think FSU will beat Miami. VT should win its next 4, but I am undecided on Pitt since the Panthers have owned them. worst-case is both teams have two losses. As for the advantage, as I mentioned earlier, I do not think we have seen this Miami starting group clicking on all cylinders at this point. So it is unfair to say who has the edge just yet. Right now, I would say the VT D is playing better than the Miami O but this VT starting group has played the last few games in their entirety. Miami O has not.
Miami O has the advantage. The same Miami O that put up a 33 spot last year on a Thurs night.
VT D is better this year, Scott.
Who has the edge if the weather plays a major factor, FSU or MD?
Both teams are solid running the ball so I think it is a wash.
off ACC for a minute...what do you think of these pre-October firings. Pretty crazy to me it has come to this - firing a coach 4 games in.
Not surprised in these two cases to be honest. As somebody who covered UConn in the old Big East, I never really saw how PP would improve that team this year.
I know Tennessee fans will disagree, but shouldn't Haden let the man get off the tarmac before firing him. Especially, if there will still players around. He could have called him in the office, right?
All I know is I am glad I do not have to fire people as part of my job.
Miami is better then what you give them credit for.
Good, let me see it on Saturday.
Why is West Virginia so inconsistent?
QB play is the answer this year.
Is Virginia Tech a top 25 team? If so, does that mean Alabama has the best three wins so far this season?
I do not have VT in my top 25 rankings this week.
Lane Kiffin's has never had a losing season in college football despite years where he's had reduced scholarships. Yes I'd hire him.
How did I know you would say that?
Miami has the most athletes, an experienced OL and men playing DT now instead of Earl Moore and Corey King. Notice how those kids haven't seen the field after playing 40+ snaps a year ago? They are the best team in their division by a mile. The last 10 years is over with and should have no bearing on the team this year.
I am not sure they are the best team in their division by an entire mile, Scott. VT *might* have a case if the D keeps playing this well. I do agree the Miami DL has completely transformed itself, and that has been terrific to watch. 16 sacks already? Curtis Porter has to get early vote for defensive MVP on that team.
I just think you dont like miami cuz your a gator fan its okay i still like you tho.
Oh please, Sam. That has nothing to do with anything, but I will never convince you all of that.
So who wins the World Series?
What's going on with Fedora and the Tar Heels? Is it time to push the panic button after UNC got steam rolled by ECU?
Yes for sure. UNC has VT and Miami now in back to back games. They lose both, and they have to go 5-1 in the back end of the season just to finish .500. to me the biggest issue is lack of run game and lack of leadership. Some of the comments I read from DC Vic Koenning today were very disturbing re: the leadership on the D.
We have gotten a ton of questions about Florida State, Miami and VT. Anybody else have a question about the 10 other ACC teams?
We also have discussed MD and UNC so ... there are plenty of other teams out there.
If Clemson and Oregon make it to the BCS game? Who would win?
Great question, Santos. I have Oregon ahead of Clemson in my power rankings so I would lean Ducks. But I am not 100 percent sold on that. Oregon has not played anybody with a winning record yet!
You can only have one, Diggs or Watkins?
Watkins by a hair.
What do you think about Jameis Winston's play so far through 4 games? and what do you he needs to do to become a true heisman contender?
He is No. 6 in the latest ESPN Heisman Watch for those wondering. He has to keep putting up big numbers and FSU has to keep having a great season.
Why should Oregon be ranked above a Clemson team that beat GA? Oregon's has not played anyone this year to prove it's worth.
That is a valid point, Sean. I guess it is the totality of the victories, the way Oregon has won. When I do my rankings, I take into account that plus the strength of schedule.
Is John Tenuta the reason a medicore UVA program has landed two of the top 10 players in the nation?
That might be a question better asked to our recruiting folks, but Mike London pulled in a few big-time guys last year, too, before Tenuta joined the staff.
Will Duke go bowling again this year? Will UVA fire Mike London?
Going to say no on Duke bowl, and no on London fire. I reserve the right to change my mind.
FSU is over rated Virginia tech barely beat Marshall and Virginia couldn't score a TD on Pitt. They better watch out for Miami not the other way around
I think it is dangerous for Miami or Miami fans to overlook anybody on the schedule the rest of the way.
Does a win in Death Valley place Winston at the top of the Heisman list?
No idea, Kevin. Too many variables there.
Look, the Canes O is good, moved on FL early pretty easily and then got bottled up. Golden said they didn't want to get in a track meet and had confidence the D could hold up vs UF O. Is that true or coach speak, who knows. One thing I do know is UF D is as good as I've seen in college football this season by far. With a D that is not giving up 41 points to UVA, they are a 10 win team at minimum.
I agree, Miami should win 10 games.
Miami fans must not remember FSU playing a very sloppy game against them last year and still winning easily.
Well that was last year, right Miami fans?
Do you think Florida State will have 1,000 yard rusher this year?
No. The carries are split too much.
Can an unbeaten Clemson and/or Oregon be robbed by Ohio State?
By robbed you mean ... Ohio State getting a spot ahead of them? I do not think Ohio State's schedule will be stronger than either Clemson or Oregon at the end of the year. Also Clemson and Oregon already are ahead of Ohio State in the human polls, so that is big for both as well.
I guess B Mand forgets Shaw's fumble, I mean drop that would have made it 14-0 and our QB who couldn't walk.
We need Canes chat, I mean AA the Gator chat every day on here!!!!
Haha very funny.
The best players from the top 3 ACC teams vs top 3 SEC teams in an all star game. Which confrence wins?
Who do you think will win, between Miami and Florida State? Miami fans seem to think Miami will just run over FSU.
I said earlier I still think FSU has the edge in that one.
does Clemson stub it's toe this year as it almost always finds a way to do? If so, who beats them? FSU?
Going to say no, Eric. I see a perfect record in ACC play.
What is your impression of Dave Doeren and is he a good fit for the NC State/ACC? Will he stay for the long term?
I like Dave Doeren, and I think he is a great fit. Here is what impresses me so far. He has a team that was one of the youngest in the entire country in terms of returning starters. He has had to play with a backup QB not suited to his scheme's strengths. And he changed systems offensively and defensively. Yet this team has a real chance to win 9 games this year. Credit to Doeren for that. As for whether he stays for the long term, he has only been around 4 games let's give him a chance!
With all this talk of Miami being so great, it's worth noting that USA Today has their strength of schedule ranked 161...and that's including playing number 18 Florida.
FAU, Savannah State and USF are the dregs of college football society.
Maryland beats FSU if...
Their front can fluster and pressure Jameis Winston and the entire D limits the big play, and the Maryland run game controls the clock.
I think FSU has the edge too. C I'm not a total homer, unlike all my FSU friends who act like they've been Alabama the last 4 years.
We are a month out and the trash talk is in full swing. Love it!
Do you think the inconsistent play of Stephen Morris at QB will prevent the Canes from meeting their potential, and fan expectations?
Not going to say that, Tony. He has really only played in a little more than 2 complete games. Just want to see how he does now moving forward through ACC play.
USF has decent talent on D(Aaron lynch) don't overlook them and its not like the teams FSU have played are any better really.
Sam are you joking me? USF is an absolute train wreck my friend. And FSU has played 3-1 Pitt, 3-2 Nevada and 2-2 BC. USF is WINLESS and FAU has one win -- against USF. So you can't really make the strength of schedule argument.
USF has a decent D. Offense not so much Sam. We haven't played anyone yet. These next 2 weeks will tell us a lot, but I fully expect convincing wins vs. GT and UNC.
The only team that has proven itself so far in the ACC is Clemson who beat GA. Georgia in turn beat LSU. Nobody else has been tested and won.
Well, Miami was tested vs Fla and won.
Hey AA, follow up to my 1st question...I didn't mean Dave Doeren would be ousted anytime soon (because we love him in Raleigh), but will he stay at NC State if successful?
I know. I just feel like it is not really fair to say what he will do/what will happen after only four games.
Say something about Syracuse :)!?
OK. Syracuse! I was actually just thinking about the sweet potato pecan pie at Dinosaur the other day. ... football wise, Scott Shafer is one of my favorite coaches to interview. Really interested to see how the Cuse competes vs. Clemson. Might be a better game thank people think!
OK everyone, thanks for hopping on the chat today! See you all again next week. Enjoy the games!
