Chat with Gary Horton

Ed (Queens Village)

What must Jets do to get win on MNF?

Gary Horton
  (4:04 PM)

The deck is certainly stacked against them. They just do not have the explosive players that we see. Their best attribute is that physical defensive line. If they can't control the line of scrimmage and get a little bit of a pass rush and make Matt Ryan uncomfortable, speed things up, then I don't see any way the Jets can match up at the skill positions. Without a run game and facing a hostile crowd, I just think it's not looking good for the Jets.

Tim (El Cajon, CA)

Freeman to MN. Good enough to get them into the playoffs with the weapons the Vikes have or no?

Gary Horton
  (4:05 PM)

Oh, I think it's a terrific move and they do too, since they gave him a considerable amount of money. This is a talented young guy. If lack of character and work ethic is not a problem, then he has a chance to take over this franchise. I think they got to a point where they don't believe in Christian Ponder and Matt Cassell. I also think they believe they are not a rebuilding team, that they're capable of making a nice run. I think they expect Freeman to play quickly.

Michael cook (Ohio)

Why is Carolina so set on changing Cam newton His rookie Year he Threw the lights out games they lost were lost by a weak secondary . So why Change cam Its like they are trying to enter a Porsche in to The tractor Pull

Gary Horton
  (4:06 PM)

I think we're seeing all of these young QBs play in more pro style offenses. I look at Carolina on offense and I just don't see a lot of consistency. I think they can be special, but I just don't see it every week.

Gary Horton
  (4:08 PM)

Oh, I think the Falcons should win easily. They're at home. They have to be very disgusted at their record right now. They know they're better than that. They face an inferior opponent in a loud dome. I would be shocked if they put up a great effort and take care of things quickly. I just don't see where the big plays come from for the Jets. I'm just not a big Geno Smith fan yet.

keith (ohio)

Anything anyone can do to slow down manning? Let the air out of the tires of the Broncos team bus so they don't make it to the game?

Gary Horton
  (4:10 PM)

I think Dallas probably proved it, but I think it was a fluke. I don't think you can use a ball control offense to keep Manning off the field and limit his possessions. That's just not going to happen. I don't see anyone in the NFL capable of putting up the kind of offensive display that we saw from Dallas yesterday. More than ever, if you're going to be competitive with Denver, you have to go in with the mindset that you're going to score with them. Try to match them TD for TD, because you know they're going to score.

Zac (Chicago)

Do the Detroit Lions have a "culture" problem? They seem to have a number of players who can't control themselves....Suh, Riola etc.

Gary Horton
  (4:11 PM)

They certainly have in the past on the field. They acquire players that are tough, hard nosed guys with edges. Sometimes those guys are hard to control. But I think they have to be very careful, because the leash is getting shorter. We can not have a lot of major instances.

Eddie G. (Memphis)

Nate Washington looked like he was going to be a reliable WR before Locker went down. Does Fitzpatrick help or hurt his production for the next few weeks (while Locker is out)? Thanks!

Gary Horton
  (4:12 PM)

It will hurt his production. They were developing something. Fitzpatrick is a decent guy, but he's not special. I don't think it will be the same output there.

Sparky (Tempe)

Who will have fewer wins this year: Steelers or NYG? Have a bet going with my buddy and your input is much appreciated!

Gary Horton
  (4:13 PM)

I think they'll probably be very close. But I would probably say the Giants. I just don't know if they have anything they can hang their hat on either side of the ball. At least the Steelers have a decent running game and Big Ben.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Gary, Romo choked again. I don't care about his stats. Once again he made the crucial error, at the critical time, that cost his team the game. This is a pattern, not an anomaly, right?

Gary Horton
  (4:14 PM)

I absolutely disagree with you. I am amazed at how many Cowboys fans today, instead of enjoying the fact that they took the best team in the NFL right to the end and played a game against the Broncose that I didn't think was possible, everyone just wants to talk about Romo. What if he had made that mistake in the first quarter and then put up several TDs? We wouldn't have remembered it by the time we got to the fourth quarter. This guy is a special QB.

Ian ((Cincy))

Is Schaub done in Houston

Gary Horton
  (4:16 PM)

I don't think he's done. To be honest, their other options at QB aren't great. Who will you replace him with? However, this will be a hugely important week to get his confidence back. I can live with his pick-6 last week, because his coaches called it. But what I saw yesterday was very alarming for a veteran QB. He threw right into coverage. He know has defenders who are jumping routes. What hurt him the most was an INT by a DL, who jumped out in a zone blitz. If you're Matt Schaub, you have to know where that guy is. I think they'll live with him a little longer, but it's a huge problem.

Eddie G. (Memphis)

What is wrong with the Texans D? Thought Ed Reed would help them, but man that game yesterday was painful.

Gary Horton
  (4:17 PM)

Well, they're a good defense, but they haven't made as many impact plays the last couple of weeks, not creating as many turnovers. To be honest, they were facing a really good and typical 49ers offense last night. Houston is in trouble.

Jemaine (Auckland)

With your eagle eye, can you explain what happened to Trent Richardson? He looked so good last year. How does he sink this far? Can't be the new offense, can it?

Gary Horton
  (4:19 PM)

No, I think it's the new offense. He has a whole new set of plays. They don't run a lot of two back sets, so he's by himself. He's with a young QB who audibles a lot at the line. Those are all things that are not easy to learn. I think he'll get better as time goes on.

Michael (Cincinnati)

Think back to Thursday night in Cleveland if you can. Is it plausible a team performs differently from one quarterback to another? The Browns seemed to suffer a significant blow when Hoyer went down.

Gary Horton
  (4:20 PM)

I think right now, the players have some confidence in Hoyer. He's a local kid. I think they feel good about his skill set and I get the feeling that these players would really like to root for him to keep the job.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Gary - do you feel early success for today's group of 1st and 2nd year QB's has had a negative impact on their growth - the hype alone is overwhelming?

Gary Horton
  (4:22 PM)

No, I think the coaches do a good job of adjusting their offenses. All of the read-option that we saw a year ago, we see much less this year. This is a well coached league. I think the talent level of these young players is so terrific that the coaches will adjust to find the right offense that fits their skill set.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Hi Gary - is it possible that by the end of the year Indy might be Denver's biggest challenger for the AFC title?

Gary Horton
  (4:26 PM)

I think they are their biggest challenge. They both have very cerebral, competent QBs. They both spread the ball to all of their weapons. They are very smart football teams. I don't think that Andrew Luck is afraid of getting into a shootout with Peyton. I think he'd probably welcome the challenge of matching him possession by possession. What I do love about the Colts is their ability to make the transition from a Cover-2 and a finesse passing team to a tough, physical team in a very short period of time.

Michael (Cincinnati)

What do you think of Pryor's game thus far? His throwing has improved dramatically.

Gary Horton
  (4:28 PM)

I think it's improved a little bit. It probably looks a little better to us, because he's on the move. I think he's a fun guy to watch, but I just don't think that the Raiders can live with him at QB for any length of time.
