We'll get rolling in a sec... keep sending in your questions, comments...
I hope OU looks over their game against TTU as much as you do. Wouldn't you think that game should get a little more hype than the game after it considering how even that series has been in the recent past? Also, Baylor and Tech play every year in Dallas, which is as neutral as it comes in college football, just thought you might like to know.
Baylor and OU are the hot teams, but neither should be overlooking Tech. As I wrote yesterday, if Tech can figure out the QB situation, the pieces are in place for the Raiders to make a run. They haven't looked as impressive as Baylor or to a lesser extent, OU. But the bottom line is, they are 5-0. And they'll have their say when they go to Norman later this month.
Who do you think will win between Baylor and OU? And what are the chances that that team will end up the season ranked in the top 5?
If I had to pick the game today, I'd pick Baylor. The Corey Nelson injury really hurts the OU D, and I just don't see OU outscoring Baylor given how the offense is currently constructed. The winner of that game will have a good chance to be Top 5. Top 2? Probably not, but a lot can happen.
Regarding the Mike Davis hit, isn't the "above the shoulders" condition of the targeting rule pretty ridiculous if you can target a player's knee and get away with it? Any chance of this leading to a change in the targeting rule?
No way to implement a rule that also flags players for going for the knees. Part of the game. There is a rule, however, that governs sportsmanship. And going for someone's knees after the whistle definitely falls in that category.
Should Baylor fans go ahead and buy Fiesta Bowl tickets? No shot at NC with all these unbeatens. from ACC, B10, P12 and SEC right?
Gonna be really tough. Because of where they started, tough to see Baylor leaping Ohio State, Stanford, Oregon, Clemson, Florida State, SEC powers... but, we're still early in the season. Lot can happen between now and then.
What chance do you give Petty and Seastrunk making it to the Heisman stage only playing one half each game? Does Art really have to put up 100 on people?
The dilemma Baylor has is which guy to push for the Heisman. The two are kinda splitting the vote, which is why you don't see a Baylor player anywhere on these straw polls. But if Baylor were to go 12-0, they'd definitely have a guy in NYC. Not sure who that will be yet.
What the heck do I do now? Both of my QBs are turnover machines...
I stick with Sams. Offense has more pop with him in the lineup. You have to remember, he didn't have Lockett or Thompson for much of the OSU game. If he can limit turnovers, K-State has a chance to be better offensively than they've been with Sams in there.
What are your thoughts on Amaro and the draft? I hope he will stick around for his senior year, but it seems like this year doesn't have any major receivers or tightens types coming out. Do you think he goes and if so when?
Unless Amaro becomes a 1st rounder -- which I don't think he is right now -- I would think he would come back. But you're right, he has NFL potential. Reminds me a bit of Jermaine Gresham the way Tech has used him, and Gresham was a first rounder. We'll see what grade he gets from the advisory committee in December.
How does Mike Davis get away with that hit on Broomfield and making comments that he would do it again with no consequence from Texas or the conference?
Great question. It was so bad, Texas had to send out an email to a few reporters attempting to clarify what was being reported. Problem is, Davis was saying similar things on Twitter.
is it worth it for Texas fans to shell out the money for this weekend's game? Will we be leaving at halftime?
History shows anything can happen in this game. But it doesn't look promising.
Since it appears nelson is gone for the season, do you see them plugging alexander in and sticking with the 3-3-5? With as good as wade played vs TCU, and 2 running teams up next(UT, KU), could you see us switching to a 4 man front? wade and phillips could be a nice disruptive force in the middle of the line together.
No, the defensive scheme has been too good for them to just switch it up. They'll throw Alexander in there and see how it goes.
Hi Jake Do you think we will see a good Oklahoma texas shootout? and it was 2 weeks ago Georgia won 44 to 41 over lsu.and that was a shootout as well comments.
The line is 13 or whatever for a reason. That's an enormous point spread for this game. So Vegas thinks it could be a rout, and so do I. Texas has completely rolled over the last two years in this game... and I haven't seen anything to suggest they won't do the same this time, either.
No chance Bob Stoops and Joe C. go to Austin in my opinion, what about yours Mr. Trotter??
No chance. Texas AND OU fans would hate that alike.
What do I have to do to get the Cowboy faithful on my side? For Pete's sake they gave Chelf a standing ovation when he took a snap!!!
Complete some passes.
why pick the TCU game to have a bunch of high profile offensive recruits attend? Hard to sell them when the offense cant show much against a stout frog D.
When these trips were being booked, TCU looked like the best home game on the schedule.
I guarantee you that my Longhorns is going to win the RRSO. With OU's Senior LB out, it will be like 2008 all over again. UT 45-35! Book it. We are going to win this one for Mack!!!
How does Texas NOT offer the job to Briles? He has done more with less. Mack has done less with more.
Baylor fans will not like me saying this, but Briles, IMO, would be an excellent hire for Texas.
Will Case McCoy do in the Sooners this weekend like his brother use too?
Case isn't Colt
I was wondering why you have a K-State team that lost to a FCS school lower in your power rankings than WVU, but you have them going to a Bowl while you have WVU missing one; is there a reason for this discrepancy?
West Virginia beat Oklahoma State. Who has K-State beaten?
Will BU bust 70 on us?
If they do, the rest of the Big 12 is in real, real trouble.
Then why do you have them not making a bowl game, why you have K-State going to the Pinstripe?
Brandon does the bowl projections. We have different opinions.
What are your odds of WVU making a bowl game?
Mountaineers have 3 wins now. If they can beat Iowa State at home, KU and win one more game, they're in. So I think there's a pretty good chance for it.
How do you feel about rice being on the selection committee? for me personally, id have no problem with it if she were an AD somewhere. its about her profession, not gender, IMO.
I respect smart people. Rice is a very smart person. So I'm all for it.
My sleep tonight will be a lot more sound because of you sir thanks for answering 48-14 Sooners this weekend!!! BOOMER SOONER!!!!
How has Briles' pulling the first string O affected the way BU is percieved nationally? Will that come back to bite them in closer games?
No. Everyone seems more impressed that Baylor has been winning by these margins despite pulling people in the third quarter. I love the stat about Lache getting only 2 second half carries this season. Crazy.
Who do you see being the starting QB at Tech from here on out?
Why do YOU hate WVU so much... did you watch games.. or just read what ESPN says...
ESPN tells me to hate West Virginia. So it's really out of my hands.
How do you grade Texas Tech RBs ?
Been very effective catching the ball out of the backfield. Could be better between the tackles.
If Mack loses by 25 or more this weekend could you see a circumstance where he'd just leave? What about 35?
In that scenario, I think Mack would just announce in November he would be resigning after the season.
What needs to happen for the Big 12 to get back in the top 2 or 3 (conference rank)?
Texas needs to start carrying its weight.
if Baylor wins out, what one-loss teams could still finish ranked ahead of them?
Definitely the top SEC teams. Maybe Oregon. I think Baylor would have a good chance to pass everyone else.
Jake, I just want to say that you are running this chat in a great way! Golden Sooners 56, Rusty Horns 27
What is the fan ratio of Sooners to Texas fans at the cotton bowl.
This year, it'll probably be greater than 50-50.
You're right - I don't like to see Briles' name being brought up for the UT job. Do you really think Art would abandon Waco, given what he's accomplished AND with the new stadium on the horizon?
He would have to consider it. Briles is a Texas guy, and coaching UT is the pantheon of coaching in the state. But he's got it rolling in Waco. And the grass isn't always as green as it looks on the other side of the fence.
People always say "anything can happen" when Ou and Texas play, but how have games looked when one team is a heavy favorite? Has it been more prone to upsets than any other conference games?
Good question, and I can't tell you how the upset factor compares with other games. I will say, there have been 3-4 times in the history of the rivalry the other side had no shot going in -- and then won.
What Texas wants Texas gets! Ask Nebraska, Missou, Aggie, etc
and 7.5 million IS alot of green Jake!
Do you think TTU secondary would be able to stop Baylor or TTU D-Line can put some pressure on Bryce ? Or will there be a shootout on Nov 16 ?
You can slow Baylor, but you can't stop them unless you're Alabama or something. Going to take 35-40 points minimum to knock off Baylor this year, I believe.
If you're a Sooner, or Baylor, or A&M, or any rival fan, who (outside of your own coach) are you most afraid to see Texas hire for their next HC?
Saban... Texas + Saban = Deathstar.
Given his personal history, I don't see Briles leaving Baylor for any other college team, but have you considered that there is an NFL franchise down the road that may be calling him?
I don't see Briles leaving the college game.
What about Gruden or Sumlin to Texas...scares me almost as much as losing Briles.
Texas has too much ego to go hiring a coach from Texas A&M
If Texas offers Saban 10 mill, could he really turn that down? I mean come on its Texas...
2 years ago, Baylor had a lot of hype and a top 15 ranking heading into Manhattan. K-State won. With K-State looking for revenge for last years blow up, and Baylor playing it's first road game, what are the chances we see some Snyder magic this year?
Always a chance for Snyder magic, but I don't see K-State having the horses to keep up with Baylor this year.
Any openings for B12 analysts at ESPN?
I can check...?
Is this years Baylor Team the best Big 12 team in History?
Not great. They'd have to win in Norman, then knock off Baylor on a neutral site. At the moment, they'd be pretty decent underdogs in both games. Then there's OSU, Texas...
It's been a treat to watch Baylor this year but do you think Baylor can put points against teams whose Secondary's are physical ? Till now I haven't' seen Baylor WRs getting good hits. Maybe OU will scare them a bit :)
Can't hit what you can't catch. Baylor WRs can fly.
Tech already defeated TCU, just a heads up.
Yep, good point.
Given the initial slate of games that CB Zack Sanchez, opposite of Aaron Colvin, could make a strong case for Defensive Freshman of the Year here in the B12 at least?
You know what, you could. He's been tremendous this year.
Is there any way we can have a playoff one year early,? It would be so good.
Would be phenomenal. And really, there could end up being 4-5 teams deserving of playing for the title this year.
Tech @ Motown feels like a trap game. How worried should I be about that one?
Didn't work out well for OKST
I'll trade you a Mack Brown, Applewhite, Greg Robinson and throw in Manny Diaz for Saban's brother in law
Which Big XII team has shown the best defense so far?
OU, followed by TCU, Tech and... Baylor.
Do you think Baylor would be able to score another 70 points against Kansas State ? Kansas State Offense plays a possession game. They can wind up 5-8 minutes in their scoring drives easily. I think it will be interesting to see how Baylor plays against Kansas State.
It's a good point, and it will be the strategy Snyder employs. K-State went with the same strategy in Stillwater, and it worked pretty well. Keeping the Baylor offense off the field is K-State's only shot.
1. OU vs Texas. Does Mack get fired and drown his tears in corn dogs at the fair after the game?2. Bob Stoops going to Texas is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Please tell me its a bunch of lies.
Seems pretty ridiculous to me.
Injuries aside, Texas is one blown call away from being in full spiral. If they lose RRSO badly, do you see them making a bowl?
I believe Mack Brown is undefeated the game after Oklahoma. Texas already has 3 wins, so it would be pretty stunning if they didn't make a bowl game even after getting blown out by OU. Then again, the way Texas has played, not unthinkable, either.
How concerned should the Sooners be about their receivers having trouble consistently getting open against the first quality secondary they've faced this season?
The one thing TCU does is cover. Not many WRs are getting open against that secondary.
Hello Mr. Trotter, Saturday brings us the "Red River Shootout", in which beleaguered Mack Brown is 5-9 against arch enemy Bob Stoops and the Sooners. Among the nine are losses of 63-13, 65-13, 55-17 and last year's 63-21. Would you tell us both; how you think the game will play out, and what you would expect to transpire in Austin during the aftermath, should UT be yet again defeated, especially if it is non-competitive. Thank you for your time.
My picks will be on the blog Thursday, but I'm leaning the same way everyone else is.
Buying or Selling Texas Tech? Yeah, my Red Raiders are 5-0 but the past few years have taught me better than to get too excited about good starts. With such a back loaded schedule, I have my doubts.
Buying as the third best team in the Big 12.
When is Desmond Rolland going to take over for Jeremy Smith?
Over/Under on number of Belldozer runs this Saturday? I say 5I am so psyched, it is my first RRR!!
Have a good time. It's an atmosphere like no other.
When Mack is hitching back to Austin, will anybody give him a ride?
Any OU fans living in Austin would.
You've mentioned Baylor's first half offensive stats. What about Baylor's first half (or through the third quarter) defensive stats? The fourth quarter their defense has been third string players. How improved is the primary defense for the Bears?
One of the underrated storylines in the conference. They haven't really faced a viable offense yet. But they have been strong so far.
Mack Brown is CFB best politician! Promised to run the table and we end up with empty pockets!
I sure hope OU players and coaches are NOT overlooking the horns like the media and fans seem to be.. Very dangerous to do so..
Where will you be enjoying the BU/OU and Stanford/Oregon Thursday extravaganza? What a Thursday, right? The NCAAF world will be a different place the next day.
Hopefully I'm in Waco.
Did any of the Kansas players take offense back when Charlie W referred to his players as a "pile of crap?"
I'd drive from Iowa to get Mack back to Austin!!!!!!
How do you rate Baylor's rush defense? Only four games in, but I do not think any opponent has had success.
It's been great so far, but again, Baylor hasn't faced a decent offense yet
How do Goodley and Reese stack up to other WR duos in Big 12 history?
Got to be up there, right? Might be something worth examining later this season.
will swopes play this weekend?
Mack seems pretty stuck on Case.
Would Baylor have a chance at the Big 12 title in 2011? 2008? 2005?
Let's see them win 2013 first.
Who should be the starting back- Desmond Roland or Jeremy Smith?
Roland has looked like the better back to me.
Jake, How many yards do you think the Sooners run for this weekend?
Who would you take- Blake Bell or JW Walsh?
With OU's starting LB out, I am going to shock the world and start Swoopes. OU can't stop a running QB. Just wait
The way Mack has gushed about Case, I don't see it.
Which Big 12 teams have the best RBs?
Without giving it much thought... 1. Baylor, 2. OU, 3. West Virginia, 4. Texas, 5. Kansas, 6. TCU, 7. K-State, 8. Iowa State, 9. Tech, 10. Oklahoma State.
For every question you answer, how many do you get?
Have had well over 200 sent in today.
Any trade secrets on navigating the Fair and the RRR?
Get to the corn dog booth early.
I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see Texas come out in the diamond formation on the first play, pitch to Jalen Overstreet and throw it deep to Sanders or Davis. At least try something against OU to mix things up.
Agreed. Nothing to lose in this game. Mack should pull out all the stops.
Is Brewer gonna be much of an improvement? I know he's more familiar but still not many starts or game time situations yet.
He's the real key. If he plays well, Tech is going to be a handful.
Is the media talking about Baylor anywhere near as much as people on this chat are? Geez.
Texas is offering a FREE CORNYDOG for students who show up.
'08 Sooners vs '13 Bears who wins this epic shootout??
At this point, the 2008 Sooners. They went to the national championship game. Baylor is just 4-0. We'll see what this Baylor offense does against viable opponents.
Jake, have you heard from Allen, he's usually good for two or three Baylor bashes on these chats. Did the WVU blowout finally show something to the haters?
No sign of Allen today.
OK Jake - you wrote that Baylor hasn't faced a viable offense, and then you wrote that WVU has some of the top running backs in the conference. Baylor shut them down. So how about more on the Baylor defense (which is an improved defense from last year that shut down KSU, OSU, and UCLA).
Just because WV has good backs doesn't mean it has a good offense. Mountaineers are ninth in the big 12 in scoring for a reason.
WVU has no passing offense
The '08 Sooners couldn't even beat the '08 Longhorns.
The '08 Longhorns one of the underrated teams in Big 12 history.
Hey Im here. Still not buying Baylor. might after this weekend. We have seen this before soooo many times with teams playing TERRIBLE non conf opponents. Baylor hasn't ever won the big 12, and they wont this year
There you go, KD.
I think your ranking above is off. It ranks the running game rather than the running backs, IMO. Tech has great backs this year, but the running game is suffering because of the youth, inexperience, and, in a few cases, limited talent on the OL. Thoughts?
Maybe so. I like the Tech backs as receivers. But the league is pretty good at the position this year.
08 horns lost to TT, whom got DESTROYED and EMBARRASED on national TV in norman
Vegas had Texas favored in EVERY game this season. Mack Brown is smarter than Vegas! GO HORNS!!!
so shutting down an offense is giving up 42 points. OK!
After getting called out, Allen gets the last word today...
Guys, that's all the time we have today. Thanks for all the questions. Chat will be back next Tuesday, same time, same place. Until then, everyone have a good week.
