Welcome to the chat everyone, lots to talk about so let's get started.
Garry,Thanks for all your excellent work. A possibility for the next coach-Joe Barry. He is fiery, energetic, and a good motivator. He certainly understands and appreciates Trojan heritage and culture. The linebackers always played hard under him, and many recruits were very impressed also.I know he has no head coaching experience. Could the right staff help in that transition, or is that a deal breaker? Your thoughts please. Thank you.
I think a lot of Joe Barry and think he could make a terrific head coach for the Trojans at some point, I just don't think it will be right now. I think a strong preference for Haden is someone with a track record as a head coach and Joe simply doesn't have that on his resume yet. I don't think that would preclude him from coming back on the new staff and possibly positioning himself for a shot at the head spot somewhere down the line.
Hi Garry always enjoy the chat! With the coaching change I believe that Pat Haden needs to hit a homerun. I hear all the names that are being talk about, a lot of big names, but just because they have a big name doesn't mean that they will fit in, and that's a big part of it! I believe that a coach has to embrace what USC is about, I think coach kiffins flaw is he did totally the opposite, he was concern with the little things like closin practice to the media, not discussin injuries and a lot of little things, he consumed himself with those thing instead of focusing on the things to be successful. With that said I would like if they went after someone that will transmit that confidence in the program. Gruden, peterson, Sumlin, franklin, and my dark horse, Tim DeRuyer from freso st I watched when they played Boise st and I was impressed with way he coached. He reminds me of a young urban Meyer when he was at Utah! I am rooting for coach O.
Haden definitely knows the need to hit it big with this hire, it is the most important decision of his tenure. I agree about the need for the new coach to understand USC, to understand the culture and the kind of players who fit at the school. You would think Haden and J.K. McKay would be two pretty good people to help lead the search for such a coach.
With Adoree wanting to play WR at the next level do you see him playing both ways a la Charles Woodson or switching primarily to WR and do you think the school that are recruiting him are going to allow him to play WR? Is USC open to him at WR or do we want him as a CB?
I'm getting the sense more and more than Adoree' is simply looking to play receiver. USC was the first school to say they were open to recruiting him as a receiver and I'm sure that hasn't changed. Oregon is a school that sounds like it has made a lot of ground on him lately. He's a dynamic player, no doubt, but I would still see him as a better corner than receiver, he is just that good as a corner.
What kind of crowd do you think will attend this Thursday ? Will we get between 70 & 80K ?
I don't think it's going to be as good as this game deserves. With the first game of the Orgeron tenure, he and the players deserve a big crowd for their first game post-Kiffin and it just doesn't look like that will happen. The Thursday night factor is proving to be a big factor in the low attendance. However, I do think those in attendance will be extremely vocal and supportive so the players will definitely feel that.
Big if question but IF Haden decides to keep Orgeron around do you see him bringing back Polamalu/Sanders to the staff? I remember recruits speaking highly about these two along with Orgeron in the beginning of that 2013 class that consisted of Ramsey/Redfield/Fitts/Vanderdoes etc.
I see the chances being much better with Polamalu than Sanders. There was a lot of support for KP and there were really only differences with one person, the head coach. Now that coach is gone so there would be a lot of people pulling for KP to return but it all comes down to the new hire.
I SAW SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF DAVID SILLS FROM THIS SEASON SO FAR AND I CANT UNDERSTAND WHY EVERYONE IS DOWN ON THIS KID. HES A VERY GOOD ATHLETE AND HAS A GOOD ARM. IS JOSH ROSEN JUST THAT GOOD THAT NO ONE TALKS ABOUT SILLS ANYMORE?
I think part of the issue for David is that his team played such a limited schedule last year and he wasn't a big participant on the spring/summer camp circuit this year. That is a big time for the hype to grow on players and he wasn't a major presence. Now he's playing well so it will be interesting to see where he starts to fall as rankings are adjusted throughout the season. As far as Rosen, he is that good whether is he being compared to Sills or anyone else in the class.
Gary what do you feel the time table will be for a new coach being named..
Haden has been pretty clear about saying he wants to wait until the end of the season. That may prove tougher to do as that point nears because there will be so much speculation but he says he wants to respect the current players and the interim coach in Orgeron,
Hi Garry, do you see any change on Clancy Pendergast's 5-2 defense, such as adding coverage in the middle?
I don't think you will see wholesale changes. The coaches understand what happened in this game and how big of an issue it was but that is one of the risks of running the 5-2 defense, you can be vulnerable sometimes in the middle of the field. You also don't want to overact to having faced an accurate QB and an extremely talented receiver who was catching everything. I'm sure Orgeron will add a few tweaks here and there but don't expect to see anything drastic. One position change we did see this week was Josh Shaw back at safety with Torin Harris and Kevon Seymour as the corners.
Hi Garry, do you see any immediate need to add an offensive consultant (Jeff Tedford) to the staff? Does it mean Coach O doesn't feel comfortable with Clay Helton? Is there a specific task Jeff Tedford to do if he took the offer?
I liked the fact that Orgeron checked in with Tedford, even though Tedford eventually said no. How many former head coaches are sitting around unemployed right now who are known as good offensive minds and have recent experience in the Pac-12? Not many but Tedford is one of them so you place a call to see if he wants to come help. He said no and so Orgeron moved on to hire Pete Jenkins, a 45-year veteran d-line coach who has been retired since 2009. Orgeron and Jenkins have known each other for a long time and Orgeron said he is known for his work in the 3-4.
Are we in a race against time or are the recruits (Adoree/JuJu/Michiah) and other elite recruits in the state/region we were after going to wait until we name someone before making their decision? I would think if they wait and see then they generally have a high-level of interest in USC right? Or wrong? Thanks again for another Chat Garry! Looking forward to reading the Q&A's again this week. Fight on.
I don't think time is an issue and that's a good thing in SC's favor. This coaching move is one that has gone over well with recruits and they are anxious to see who the new coach is but there is no rush. I think the vast majority will wait until after the regular season to see who is named.
Thoughts on Fresno State's HC coming to USC? What about the Mora to Texas rumors?
I think DeRuyter is an up and coming coach but I don't see him as the "big hit" that Haden is aiming for. I really like what he's done in a short amount of time at Fresno State. I don't see it on Mora to Texas, just doesn't seem like a great fit on either side.
Let's pretend Orgeron guides the Trojans to a 6-2 finish (going 2-1 vs. UCLA, Stanford and ND) and wins a bowl game, will it Haden give the HC job to Orgeron?
I think there would be a good chance of that happening under the scenario you described. If the team is playing hard for Orgeron through the end of the year and having success, it would be pretty tough for Haden to discount that.
Is there a big difference in the way Lane Kiffin calls plays compared to Clay Helton? What will be Silas Reds workload against Arizona?
The difference in play calling will be one of the biggest things to look for tomorrow night. Helton called a lot of plays in spring and he seemed to have a real good flow to his plays calls. That will be the most notable area to watch, it's not so much the plays that will change (although my guess is there will be fewer bubble screens) but it's the order and flow with which they are called that is important. I do think Redd is part of the rotation, I see Madden continuing to get the most reps but Silas and Justin Davis could see a similar load, ideally somewhere around 8-10 carries apiece with Madden between 20-25.
Your opinion on Baylor coach Art Briles as the next Head Coach for USC
I have a lot of respect for Briles but I don't see him as the next guy at USC. He is the state of Texas through and through, a former high school coach who has carried his success to the college ranks and could very well be the next head coach of the Longhorns. It would also be hard to see SC go with a coach who is going to completely go with a spread type offense.
Garry,I've been hearing things like we need to get the tight ends involved more, we need to throw to our backs out of the back filed, etc. How many plays would you estimate are in the playbook? Are there plays in the playbook designed to get these players the ball now or will these types of plays have to be added?
These type of plays are all in the playbook, it's just a matter of utilizing them in a particular game plan, which I do think will happen. I have a feeling the tight end is going to be a lot more active from now on.
Hi Garry, great job on the chats. I was wondering what you thought the chance of USC hiring Orgeron as their head coach was. Also if he finishes the year strong and picks up a couple commitments in the process does that increase his chances?
I do think there's a chance. Orgeron has some high profile games to make his case, namely the games with Notre Dame, Stanford and UCLA. Those are some great opportunities for Orgeron to prove himself in big game situations. And also, it will be really important to see how the team is playing for him through this eight game stretch. it's not so much a matter of x's and o's, Haden talked about wanting Orgeron to return the "fun and energy" of college football to the team. If he does that, and sees success with some victories, it will be a very interesting decision for Haden. If Orgeron adds some big commits, it will definitely help his case too.
Gary ... Any possibility that Pat Haden might consider Jim Tressel for the USC head coaching job?
That would surprise me, considering the show cause penalty. I just don't see Haden choosing to want to deal with that.
Do you think that Ty Isaac will get more opportunities to carry the ball?
i truly think Orgeron would like to do that. He gave Ty a lot of reps on Sunday (and Ty looked good by the way) and he talked excitedly about him yesterday after practice. But when push comes to shove in a game, I just don't know how many carries will be there. Madden has earned his, as has Davis. Silas will be available tomorrow and he deserves his share as well. What about Buck Allen? He's played well enough that you would like to get more carries for him too. So where does that leave Ty? Would love to see what he can do at some point.
Garry,What can we expect of the Trojans tomorrow night? Will they come out with energy and fire and smash Arizona?
It would be a huge surprise to me if that doesn't happen. There has been a breath of fresh air restored to this program over the past week or so and you can definitely see it in the players. Once they take the field and the crowd gives them a rousing ovation, it should be an exciting night.
Who's starting at WR this Thursday night opposite N. Agholor? And is Redd ready to go? Thank you.
It will likely be Victor Blackwell.
How surprised were you over Nwosu's commitment to SC yesterday?
Yes, only because his name was so new. He didn't even play varsity last year, he played JV because the guy who played his same position (Keishawn Bierra) was really good and is now at Washington. He only got offered 5 days ago and we were planning to hit a practice this week to check him out but then the verbal came almost right away.
What changes have you seen in practice to signify that things are possibly turning around for this team? Thank you and Fight On!
The number one thing is the overall attitude and feeling from the team. The energy is going in a real good direction right now, which had to be the top wish of Haden when he made the mid-season change. As Orgeron is quick to point out, this is all just practice, so none of it is as important to how this change translates to the game. That first test comes tomorrow night.
Garry do you think Orgeron will stay regardless if he becomes the HC?
I think the chances would be good on that. The university would want him to stay, even if he didn't get the permanent job. But if he does well he could have other options so you never know. I do know that Ed is very appreciative of this opportunity being given to him by USC.
Is coach KP already signed back on?
No. KP is still coaching running backs for the Loyola Cubs.
Any more word on the NCAA possibly reducing USC's scholarship sanctions (ala Penn State)?
No. The NCAA said there would be no appeal on the matter and there has been no indication that USC will pursue it any further.
is Calhoun still a goner?
His family is making it clear that he is not a de-commit. The rumors are certainly there that it could end up happening and he is still planning on taking other visits but as long as he remains a commit to USC there is still the chance he could stick. A lot could depend on the new coach, Calhoun didn't have much of a relationship with Kiffin so that coaching change didn't hurt in that regard.
Marquise Lee has not had a stellar year so far and is hurt. What are the chances of him coming back next year for a new coach if he is excited about it? Or is he gone no matter what?
Marqise had been clear prior to the season that he would leave early for the draft with the one caveat being any injuries having a negative impact. We don't know yet when he will return or how he will play once he comes back so it's hard to know how he would feel at the end of the year. Marqise had a unique relationship with Kiffin though, he said at media day "I'll play for Kiffin until I die".
Do you think college coaching experience is an absolute criteria on Haden's HC candidate list or will he be open to candidates with NFL experience only?
I think he would be open to NFL guys. I think any head coaching experience is something that would be considered a huge priority.
Please rank the five best USC QB's of all time
Leinart, Palmer, Barkley, McDonald, Haden. Those are in no particular order. Others who would get strong consideration are guys like Peete, McDonald, Beatherd, etc.
This new LB recruit who just verballed was looking at Wyoming too. Is that where we are - competing with Wyoming for 2 stars?
You can't call him a "true" 2-star because the ranking wasn't based on anything. The kid didn't have any junior film because he wasn't on varsity last year. He played JV because the guy who played his position on varsity was a senior who was good enough to earn a scholarship to Washington. He plays 5 games of his senior year and has earned multiple rides, the most recent of which is to USC and he jumps on it immediately. The definition of a raw prospect with upside.
Will Marquis Lee play against Arizona?
Doesn't look like it.
That's all we have time for today. Thanks for coming everyone and we will see you next week.
