Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

  (1:01 PM)

What's up. I just finished watching the first 3Q of the Redskins game - coach's tape version - so let's roll. Everything you wanted to know about Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs, Texas, Mack Brown, Johnny Football and Ohio State is up for discussion. If I don't get you for some reason, you can always hit me on FaceBook or Twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas. Let's roll!!!!!!!

John R. Whatley (Santa Fe, NM)

Good Afternoon JJ,I just read your piece on TR and another article called the Science of the throw. Tells about the body mechanics of a QB when he throws and how when Smith stepped on Tony"s shoe it changed his mechanics. How many times can folks blame his poor throws on STUFF? I agree that Tony is a fantastic QB but wish he had better decision making skills ALL the time. Thanks for the good print.John R. Whatley

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

That's really the only point I was trying to make. We know Denver's linebacker made a sensational catch, but if you don't throw the ball in the situation - and you don't have to do it on 2nd down - then he's never in position to make that play

Carl (Raleigh NC)

What's up JJT,Will the Boys try to bring in any D-Linemen since D Ware is banged up and Ratliff seems on the way out?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

They'll bring one in, but there not going to find a difference-maker on the street or off a practice squad 6 weeks into the season

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who is the Best Dallas Cowboys Quarterback that you have ever seen even as a Little Kid?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

i give Staubach the slight edge over Aikman because he could make big plays over chaos and he was at his best in the clutch

reggie brice rock hill sc [via mobile]

Is the cowboys an elite team?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

really? 3-3 is as mediocre as it gets

Karl (SD)

Do you think Callahan will stay committed to running the ball this week? I know we aren't running a ton, but do they have faith in Randle to let him carry the ball 15-20 times? This isn't a great defense we're facing after all.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

if callahan didn't give the ball to DeMarco Murray that often, do you really think he's going to pound Joseph Randle? Nope.

Raleigh Grice (Rochester NY)

Hello J J T.. I am a huge Dallas Cowboys fan always have been since the age of 4 Iam 45 years old now , I have been a member of the Cowboys fan club on their official site at NFL.com... A large number of my fellow fans feel that Tony Romo has not and will not turn the corner on being able to win Important and not making game ending turnovers. The site administrators banned me from the site and told me I had to change my user name Romo Will Choke 2013, so I changed the name , and they let me back in to post comments, 2 days later they permanetly banned me for life saying I had 2 accounts when I they were the ones told me to change my name in the first place. They have been permanetly banning any fan who expresses their lack of faith in Romo.. You can talk about the owner J.J. his son or any other player , but you can not make post about Romo not cutting the mustard or you get booted from the site. I have not been disrespectfull , no name calling , and no foul langauge ever , I would like the football world to know that the people at the official NFL.com Dallas site could careless about their Fan base .

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

OK

Pete (MD)

Man what the hell is goin on with Ratliff? Is he really so broken down at this point that he can't pass a phyisical? Is it a potential career ending situation if he gets hurt again?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

He'll never play for DC again in my opinion. He's old for football player and he has played just 16 of last 22 games. His sack and tackle totals have gone down each of the last few years. At this point, he's no great loss. There's no evidence he can be more than just a guy at this point. We'll see how well he plays for the next team

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

With the d-line in shambles, who do you think dallas will cut to make room for another dl or lb? I'm thinking either darrion weems or andre smith.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

I haven't really put any thought into it. Whoever they cut is not a guy I could pick out of a lineup

Charles (Heathrow Florida)

What's the latest on Lance Dunbar I like his ability to run to daylight (if he can hold onto the ball and block) vs Murray who seems to try to run thru his blockers at times and cut the wrong way leaving yards on the field. Can a healthy Dunbar be a difference maker?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

hamstring. I don't think he's playing this week

Dave P (Northern VA burbs of DC)

Other than financial, is there a real downside to parting ways with Ratliff next year? I've been a supporter but I think it's time to move on.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

I'd cut him now. He's dead weight. You gotta pay him however you get rid of him

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

With Terrance Williams emerging and Cole Beasely becoming a threat in the slot, has Miles Austin now become expendable or close to it? Whether or not he has any value

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

There's no need to get rid of Miles. This team likes to throw. The more receivers the better. What if someone else gets hurt. Then Miles has a big role again.

pj (midlo)

Hi JJT, tough road game with dinged defense and offense. what are your thoughts on why Romo did not take many shots down the field

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

Aside from Denver he hasn't taken many all season

Cain (Berwyn)

Now with the chances of Murray being out this week do you see randle looking better with a full week of practice?

JJT
  (1:17 PM)

No doubt. He'll get a full week with the first time and the Cowboys can put the plays he runs best into the playbook

Steve (Texas)

It seems the cowboys drafted players have done well this season so far do you think it safe to say jerry was criticize unfairly because of it after 6 games thru season

JJT
  (1:19 PM)

I didn't criticize the draft. I thought each of their picks made sense. Whether guys work out is another story. They needed a center and needed a safety. They drafted Williams cause Miles was always hurt and they drafted Randle cause Murray was always hurt. They took Webb in case Scandrick became too pricey

Shawn (NC MTNS)

JJT, I wanted to extend my sincere apology for calling Claiborne a name the other night. That being said, Watkins wrote an article on Ratliff and his tenure in Dallas. Do you see Ratliff back next year or is he done? Thanks

JJT
  (1:19 PM)

Done

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

While Harris is not likely to duplicate this week what he did last week, I expect this defense to have the same tenacity against the Eagles. Although they gave up over 400 yards, do you expect the redzone defense to do as well as last week?

JJT
  (1:21 PM)

It depends, really, on your definition of "well" They've allowed points on 20 consecutive red zone possessions. The good news is they've forced 4 straight FGs after allowing TDs on 13 of 15 possessions

Jim (Jbram 34) (Waynesville, NC)

JJT how are you? Appreciate all your reportsabout The Cowboys. Do you see the Cowboys goingafter anybody on the Trading deadline?

JJT
  (1:22 PM)

nope. Tight against the cap and this isn't baseball or basketball where it;s pretty easy to fit a guy into the team

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Brandon Carr's comments were very telling of how the cornerbacks on the roster feel about playing a zone scheme versus man-to-man coverage. Do you think we continue to see man-to-man, and is doing that an admission by Monte Kiffin that he needs to adjust his gameplan to the strengths of his players?

JJT
  (1:23 PM)

Players like doing what is comfortable. Sometimes, you must go through change to stretch yourself and become a better player. They play some man and some zone in every game. That said, they gotta fit the scheme to the players as much as they can

Mel (Jersey)

Joseph randle seem pretty confident that he can get the job done, do you think he can handle the load?

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

the coaches really, really like him

Solomon (Virginia)

do you think that consistency is the dallas cowboys biggest problem.

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

in some respects. Then again, they don't as much talent from top to bottom as folks think

Mark (San Antonio)

Who do you think will be the Rangers number 1 target this offseason?

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

I'm still trying to figure that out. It's a little early

Jim (Jbram34) (NC)

JJT, appreciate all you do on reporting for the Cowboys,Do you see us trying to get anyone at the trading deadline? have a blessed day!

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

no

ramon (el paso tx)

Which corner do you trust on desean jackson? i like scandrick on him from a speed aspect

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

The last two weeks they've shadowed players. This week they might tend to stay on their particular side. That said, it's only Tuesday. They don't practice until Wednesday, then we'll get a better idea

Stephen (Bayonne nj)

Should the cowboys make Miles the 3rd receiver and give the reigns to terrence williams since he's a bigger threat right now?

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

Why? You don't have to do anything. They'll all play. You don't need rigid roles with everyone

Nick (DAL)

What is going ON with Jay Ratliff? It seems like he's quit on the team, but there has to be more to it, right? Everyone's just saying "it's not good."

JJT
  (1:28 PM)

he's hurt. He's on physically unable to perform list

Derek (Glenn Heights)

Do you think we should trade Miles Austin?

JJT
  (1:28 PM)

No. What if someone gets hurt. Besides, no one is going to take on an oft-injured player with a bloated contract

Bryan (Springdale, AR) [via mobile]

Is this considered the weekly Cowboys chat? Todd Arxher does not do one, but the other team bloggers around the NFL do

JJT
  (1:31 PM)

probably. I never asked.

Mike (Oklahoma City)

Any realistic chance the Cowboys could trade for MJD?

JJT
  (1:31 PM)

Why? Murray will be back in a couple of weeks and is signed through next season

BG (Tampa)

A lot more balls seem to be contested by the CBs/2ndary against WSH. Did Monte change up the scheme a bit? It sure seems like Marinelli is getting the most out of our DL. Gotta give him props so far.

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

they played better. they played more man, but the bottom line is they played better

Shawn (NC MTNS)

JJT, How long is Murray under contract? Should DC start looking for a running back in future drafts?

JJT
  (1:33 PM)

in today's NFL, RBs aren't special. He was a third round pick and they can and will draft another in 3rd round and make it work when he's done. Actually, Randle will get first crack

Ed (Queens Village)

Texas or Baylor wins Big 12?

JJT
  (1:33 PM)

baylor. They get Horns at home and they're offense is ridiculous

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Im not saying outright get rid of him, at the same time though how long will dallas tolerate this guy pulling his hamstring year after year?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

do you think he pulls is on purpose? Do you think he's not in great shape?

BG (Tampa)

How would you grade Garrett's coaching performance thru the 1st 6 gms? Do you notice some differences/improvements now that he is not calling every play on O?

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

I'm the guy who called for Garrett to get a long-term deal last season. He understands how to put a team together. He's a good coach trying to work through a difficult circumstance. He just has to win enough games to turn the roster around and win enough games

raul (rio grande city)

Mr Taylor, what type of player is M. Kiffin looking for as far as DT? does he like big run stuffers or quick undersized guys?

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

quick undersized guys

Cain (Berwyn)

Nick Eatman reporting on dallascowboys.com that there expecting to sigh Jarius Wynn for dline help played on Green Bay title team just another band aid right?

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

sounds like it

Marty (NH)

I am surprised that we have not heard more critical hindsight lately into the Cowboys decision to pass on Shariff Floyd given the state of the D line. I have not heard Floyd's name mentioned as being anything special up in MN. That said, even if he's a reach, Frederick seems to be working out pretty well. And we used the extra pick on Terrence Williams. Thoughts ?

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

I liked all the picks on draft day

Shawn (NC MTNS)

Will we see more of Escobar this week?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

I doubt it. 3 WR is more effective personnel group than 2 TEs thus far

Pete (MD)

Bruce Carter seemed to play better this week. Sign of things to come or up and down year?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

I expect him to be good this year. It's about consistency - not a good week here or there

Erik (PA)

Are you ready to call Claiborne a bust yet? I know I am...now this week he is going against the guy that ripped him last year. 6th overall pick, and he made one ACTUAL play on the ball in 20 games or so.

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

Nope. He's getting better. Stop laughing, it's true. He went several weeks getting burned and making no plays. While he;'s still getting beat now he's making some plays. That's improvement. I wouldn't call a starter a bust. He hasn't even played 2 full seasons yet. There's something between a bust and a star

Nathan (Stephenson)

I think these next 4 games are crucial, with CHI, GB, and two division games to finish the season. Is 3-1 against the next 4 good enough to get us in the playoffs?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

dude, you can't look further than one game at a time with this team.

raul (rio grande city)

JJT is Rattliff's replacement already on the roster? Think Hayden will be better next year with a year's worth experience.

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

Hayden is just a guy. Hard-working, relentless but just a guy. Ratliff was All-Pro at his best

Brad (Dallas)

People come to your chat thanking you for your insight and wishing you a blessed day and go give them a 2 letter response. Thats JJT in a nutshell

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

he made a statement as opposed to asking a question. Why you sensitive about someone else's question. You didn't even ask one.

Nathan ( East Tx)

Did Mac Brown do enough on Saturday to end all this talk of making a coaching change?

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

Nope. A new AD means a new coach.

Shawn (NC MTNS)

Who you got for the game this weekend and why?

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

too early. They haven't even practiced this week yet.

Erik (PA)

More on Mo....sorry but i think the 6th pick in the draft..who they graded like Deion Sanders should have made more plays by now. not one or two. And if he is picked that high in the draft , you are either a star or a bust.

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

then we disagree

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Im not saying Miles is lazy, but why is he the only reciever on this team who pulls it and pulls it constantly?

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

everybody's body is different. His is chronic. No different than Bill Walton with foot issues. Or Dirk spraining his ankle all the time. Or Nellie Cruz have quad issues.

mike (philly)

Do you see the Cowboys trying to work Dwayne Harris in on offense? Or do they have too many receivers? The guy is elusive.

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

He's played 4, 11, 12, 21, 27 and 4 offensive plays this season. They have several good receivers.

Bryan (Springdale, AR) [via mobile]

What are your thoughts on how Wilcox/Church are doing so far?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

young guys learning how to play. I got no problem

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

I'll ask it like this: What are you more concerned about when comes to Miles health: If he pulls his hamstring or when he pulls his hamstring?

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

when, but I don't think it's his fault. It's just the reality of his body

raul (rio grande city)

JJT wouldn't you try to poach Art Briles if you are the new AD for Texas? I love what he's done for Baylor and I believe he has a good eye for talent.

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

I wouldn't poach him, I'd just go get him. Knows HS coaches, has proven offensive scheme, understands quarterbacks and is good dude

Tim (OK)

Should we abandoned all hope and reason the Jerry Jones will ever hire a GM not named Jones? I have a feeling his son Steven would, if given the chance...

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

I would.

Shawn (NC MTNS)

Should Harris be considered for the pro bowl?

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

Why not? He has 10 returns of 20+ yards in the last 16 games. He's found a niche and he has confidence.

BG (Tampa)

How much film of Chips Oregon O vs Montes USC D would be watched this week by either team?

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

Not much. They have 6 weeks of tape with the Eagles. No need to watch much from USC

dean (fl)

Most likely gone next year, miles or ratliff?

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

ratliff. Miles is gonna have to take pay cut to stay in Dallas, which is not bad.

Bryan (Springdale, AR) [via mobile]

Name me 3 players on theVpwboys that are overrated by the fans. I ask this because you say the talent is not as deep as people say.

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

Most people thin Witten is a great player. Now, he's a really good player. There's a difference. Watch him in the run game and look at his yards per catch over the last couple years. Compare him with Jimmy Graham and Gronk and the youngster in Denver. He's still really good, but he's not a dynamic player. Tyron Smith is slightly above average. Most folks think he's a good player. Demarco Murray is a good back - not a really good back. Again, there's a slight difference. Bruce Carter has been average this year, most folks thought he'd be really good, including me.

Pete (MD)

I like the 5-wide look...maybe even love it.

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

Puts your QB, even though he moves well, in a lot of jeopardy.

Erik (PA)

Why not release Matt Johnson and use his spot for a d-lineman?

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

He's on IR.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

What's the most significant improvement this team has made thus far this year? I know they are 3-3, but I would say the O-Line has improved the pass blocking for sure.

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

Waters and Frederick have solidified the OL, especially up the middle

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

I would never blame a guy for his injuries: You're right about guys who have chronic problems and I'll throw in Yao Ming with his foot problem. My point is how long do you stick with a guy when you know something's gonna go wrong at some point in the season with a guy like Miles?

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

He was fine - until he got hurt.

Nathan ( East Tx)

Randle did not show much flashes of greatness in his time on Sunday night and with all the injuires on the D-line, will Romo have to air it out every week to win games?

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

without Murray he'll throw it more. Then again, they're throwing it 70 percent of the time. How much more can they throw it

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

great chat today. Let's do it again next week.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

I think what people are asking about Miles is when do you stop investing in a player when you know for sure that they will get hurt?

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

They've already invested in him with signing bonus. They're trying to recoup something for the money
