Good afternoon everyone, let's get started.
With Tavai playing at such a high level, do you see him starting somewhere once Breslin gets back, do you see him being part of the rotation?
I don't know if he starts but he will likely be playing a bigger role across the line. J.R. has shown he can play both inside and outside, which obviously increases his versatility and ability to contribute. JJ even talked on the post-game show last week about possibly using him as a 3rd OLB with Kennard and Breslin to create some interesting packages.
Hey Gary it puzzles me how much PT Torin Harris is able to get week in and week out; Instead of watching him get exposed like he does every week, wouldnt it make sense to try Ryan Henderson or C Hawkins, or even Demetrius Wright out at corner opposite K. Seymor?? Im sure they can all cover better than Harris can.
Anthony Brown practiced all day Tuesday with the first unit ahead of Harris. If healthy, expect Brown to be in the line-up for the game.
We keep hearing about USC depth concerns, but depth doesnt seem to matter when you never rotate your front line guys anyway.. Both times this season when Breslin sits out weve seen explosive plays from JR Tavai and Jabari Ruffin, shouldnt these guys be in the regular rotation...Do you agree?
Orgeron said there will be more rotation on the line from now on, with the guys you mention and Cody Temple as well. I think it's critical to get some snaps for those guys to help rest the starters. There are also guys like Marquis Simmons, Scott Starr and Quinton Powell as potential options.
I FEAL A WIN AT ND GIVES ORGERON ALOT OF MOMENTUM TO KEEP THE JOB. DO YOU THINK WE WILL BE HEARING THAT IF THEY WIN THIS WEEK? THIS TEAM HAS REALLY RALYED AROUNF COACH O. THANKS GARY LOVE THE CHATS
I agree that there is a lot of positive momentum around Orgeron right now but you kind of noticed on Tuesday at practice that it was a little more back to work mode. Orgeron commented about how there was so much attention paid last week and now they can kind of get back to football. They will need it with this test coming up because if Orgeron can pull this off it would really set things going the right way for the next half of the season. The longer he keeps that going, the more you will hear about him potentially keeping the job.
Hi Garry, How much success do you think SC will have running the ball at nd? What schemes will we have to use to move the ball and score versus nd? Thanks for bringing back the wearesc board.
I think it's critical and the key to the game. The health of Madden is a concern but Silas is back and there are other options with Davis, Allen and Isaac. The o-line has also been run blocking well. Notre Dame has a big and solid d-line so it won't be an easy test but I think SC can move the ball on them.
Are the big name recruits pulling for Coach O to get the job and do you think Mr Haden stick with him if he does a formidable job recruiting and on the field??thanks for all the answers
Support from the recruits is overwhelmingly positive for Coach O. He's always been a popular coach on the recruiting circuit but the circumstances of how he got the job, coming off the firing of a coach the recruits had cooled on, has made it a real dramatic shift. I don't think there is any top uncommitted player in the area who is out of his reach and i don't doubt he will flip a few committed ones as well. If he recruits well and can win his share the rest of the season, that would present a real strong case to Haden.
Gary, I know you had been asked on the boards and did not know ... can you check with the appropriate person in the athletic department to find out if the policy not allowing in-season recruiting trips will be changed? For general information, is this policy just for football recruits (was it set by Kiffin?), or is it a policy that covers the entire athletic department? Thanks.
They are saying the situation is being evaluated. It was a Kiffin policy so Orgeron certainly could change it but so far there hasn't been any sign of it happening. We haven't heard of any recruits looking to do anything in-season, the first big recruiting weekend still looks to be scheduled for December 13.
Where do you think Toa Lobendahn will end up?
I still think Toa ends up at SC. I think that's where he wants to be but I think he wants to see what happens with the coaching search just in case.
Hi Gary, now that we have some offers going out to the local recruits, is there any reason other than being undersized why D Williams (Lb Serra) did not receive one yet?
His size/ability to withstand the linebacker spot is a key reason for no offer yet. I was told the coaches requested more senior film because they liked what they saw during one game. Orgeron hasn't been shy about extending local offers in the last two weeks and Williams is certainly one who is getting a look.
Hey Garry on a baseball note, Is it true that the chest protector that Hanley Ramirez was wearing in game 3 and 4 was sent over from USC??? Do you think we still have a chance being down 3-1?????
I read that as well. No reason to doubt it. Tied right now 3-3 top of 3rd.
Hello Garry! I believe the Trojans will rise up to the challenge and play really well and play a complete game on both sides of the ball. If and when it happens I believe the Trojans will build confidence! Will u say that once USC rides ship forward and becomes what we are use to from the Trojans would that swing the power to the Pac12 from the Sec as arguably the strongest conference! Your toughts?
I think this game could definitely swing that kind of momentum which is why it's so important. It will be a physical football game and if the Trojans can come away with the win it would go a long way in building upon what Orgeron has done so far. If that happens, I do think you could make the argument that the Pac-12 is the top conference in the nation.
The new site, along with the installation of Coach O, has really injected new life into the Trojan Community! thanks for your part in leading us back to the Promised Land! We all know that we have a dire need for quality cornerbacks. Please give your thoughts about recruiting in this area. For example, do you think we can flip Pickett back now, possibly giving him an in-season visit? Do you think Adoree comes in, and will he play both ways?
I'm not hearing any scuttlebutt on Pickett taking another look at the Trojans and the more and more I hear from Adoree's side, it sounds like he is focused on receiver more than ever.
Will SC be an elite team like we once were say in two years?
The transition to a new coaching staff, plus a return to normal scholarship levels, offers a lot of hope. Coaches like Pete Carroll and Nick Saban have shown that things can get turned around quickly at the elite programs. If things fall in the right direction for SC, it's certainly possible that the Trojans could return to those levels in that time frame.
Do you see the same running back rotation for Saturday as the Arizona game. I mean this is Notre Dame, Do you really wanna rely on some unproven guys late in the game
It wouldn't surprise me to see all the backs rotate but I think the carries will be slanted a little more to Redd and, if available, Madden. Redd was so good with the game on the line last week against Arizona and i wouldn't be surprised if he is the primary back in crunch situations.
Do you like seeing all the offers go out, even though there's not a head coach in place or should we wait to offer guys until after a HC is hired. Bonus: When do you think a HC will be named? My guess is mid-December.
It's a fair point you make but I think the key is that Orgeron is the one overseeing the offers. He has as much sense as anyone of where the bar should be set for an SC offer so if he thinks it makes sense. it probably does. I agree on the time frame, early to mid December would be my guess. I just don't see Pat waiting too long after the final regular season game to get it done.
Hey Gary im beginning to feel that Coach O may be the answer to USC coach situation. Hes not an X's and O's guy, but a Great recruiter, motivator, and leader. Seems Clay Helton, and Tee Martin can handle the X's O's part of Offense fine enough? u agree?
I'll say this, he has slipped comfortably into the role as well as could have been expected these past two weeks. now comes a big test though. The cookies and good feelings went a long way last week but Orgeron and the team know that things step up a notch this week. How he handles things in South Bend will have a big impact on his quest to be the next head coach.
Who is the Head Coach for USC College Football Team Right Now since Lane Kiffin was Fired?
Ed Orgeron is the interim coach.
Hey Garry, I love what Coach O is doing with the sudden surge of LA recruiting but is it a little late considering a lot of theses kids are committed. Do you see players like Fields, Lasley, Denzel Fisher, etc jumping over to the Trojans. & do you think the adoree Jackson's
I don't think it's too late at all. The recruiting momentum had noticeably turned this past off-season and this transition to Orgeron has absolutely brought the buzz back for the Trojans. There may be kids who elect to stick with previous pledges but my guess is Orgeron will get his share too. I also think all the uncommitted players who were taking a wait and see attitude on SC will be looking a lot closer now.
I get the feeling we will be competitive vs anyone the rest of the season; its now like the offense is playing to win instead of playing scared. If we can get some keys skill players healthy the sky is the limit for the Offense.
I'm very interested to see where the offensive game plan goes against Notre Dame. i think the Trojans can get something going in the run game with a good rotation of backs behind an offensive line that is blocking well right now. What a bonus it would be if Marqise could be healthy too.
Other than Damien Mama is there any other Offensive Linemen that USC is looking really close at?
The Trojans offered Chris Brown (6-6, 290) from Loyola last week and he is a longtime SC fan who could be a potential verbal. David Sharpe from Jacksonville has also said he would visit.
Garry, based upon his tenure at SC, what level of coaching job is Lane Kiffin most likely to wind up with next? Would a smaller-name school from one of the power conferences give him a shot, or do you think he's taken a Bobby Petrino-sized step back (without the off-field scandals)? Could you see him winding up as a position coach or coordinator somewhere in the NFL, or would he have to work his way back up to that level?
I think it would either be position coach in NFL or head college job at a smaller name, big conference school. my guess is NFL, I think that would fit him right now and I doubt he would have a hard time finding a job.
What is the new website address?
just go straight to wearesc.com
What in the world is wrong with USC's defensive back? Torin Harris looked awful versus Arizona.
Orgeron said that the hope is Anthony Brown will be able to return to the line-up. He said the coaches also considered moving Shaw back to corner. Brown was able to practice on Tuesday but he's been out for a while so it's hard to know how much he will be able to play. He did look good in the Tuesday session.
Hey Gary any word on USC still recruiting Nathan Starks? looks to me that OU may be giving him the run around pending Joe Mixons committment; Is there a chance we can jump back in his Top 3?
i haven't heard any talk of renewed interest in Starks. It will be interesting to see how he plays now that he's been reinstated.
We have to cut it short today due to practice. Thanks everyone for coming and we will see you next week.
