Chat with Jeff Dickerson

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:30 PM)

Rough day at Halas Hall. Let's get started.

John Huey (Janesville, WI)

Do you think it is possible the Bears bring in any help Defensively, QB, or make any trades to help this roster out?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:32 PM)

John, Phil Emery just told us the Bears are exploring all their trade options, but do not expect them to make an impact deal. Emery says the impact trades in the NFL have already been made. Jordan Palmer is going to be the new No. 2 QB with Cutler out.

Cordell Summers (Chicago, Illinois)

With a lot of contracts on defense up after this season, what are the chances the bears resign some veterans, add through free agency, or rebuild through draft?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:34 PM)

They will do all three. Here are the areas of major need: DL, S, CB, TE

Rob (Crown Point, In)

Jeff, could you provide any insight as to why D. Bass (who was picked up on waivers after final cuts) has been playing instead of C. Washington? The Bears drafted Washington, ahead of the Raiders drafting Bass, and he has been with them for OTA's and camp. Is he a bust? Thanks

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:36 PM)

I don't think Washington can be labeled a bust, but the Bears obvioulsy like David Bass and feel he's in a positon to help them right now. Bass had a nice TFL vs. Washington. He seems to have potential. Washington was a 3-4 OLB at Georgia. He clearly needs time to adjust to playing DE at the NFL level.

dan (washington)

JD, I was at game so didn't have benefit of replay, but to me Chris Conte played one of the worst games I've seen. He fell over on the 45 yard touchdown. Got beat by the TE on the lob. Was beaten several other times. I know we might not have a better option (steltz?) but he needs to be benched no? it was awful

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:37 PM)

Conte had a rough game. He's not making any plays back there in the secondary. Conte is doing a respectable job supporting the run, but his pass coverage is another story. I think the Bears need to consider having Conte compete with Anthony Walters or Craig Steltz after the bye week.

David (Morton Grove)

What is the prognosis on when Jay Cutler will be declared fit and ready to return to play? How many weeks out are we talking about?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:39 PM)

Minimum 4 weeks. Will be evaluated week-to-week after that. No rock solid timetable except that Cutler is out for at least the three games following the bye week.

Pat (Dallas)

Hey JD thanks for doing this. For how long are we tied to Mel Tucker? I realize we have injuries to deal with, but the defense is just playing bad football. Missed tackles and assignments aren't only the result of injuries.

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:43 PM)

Mel Tucker signed a multi-year deal. This is a results driven business. You can be the best head coach in the word, but if your team finishes 2-14 for two straight years, you will be fired. Tucker is accountable for all of this because that's the nature of the NFL. I don't know what to say about Mel Tucker. He isn't available to us after games, and when he does speak to the media on Wednesdays, he often talks in cliches - "next man up mentality...pad level...collective effort." He doesn't give you anything. So I really don't know what his deal is.

Chris (Minnesota)

The offense looked good with McGown yesterday. Do you see him being able to lead the Bears to at least a 3-1 or 2-2 record over the next four games?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:44 PM)

Doubt it. But he did look good vs. the Skins.

Joe (Hammond, IN)

How bad is David Carr that he wouldn't even get a shot at the backup QB job?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:45 PM)

Bears had Jordan Palmer on the team during the preseason. He did a good job in the 4th preseason game against Cleveland. Teams always prefer to sign a guy they know.

Wally (Nebraska)

Emery 0-2 making the many years will they give him?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:46 PM)

Bears are technically 4-3. Season isn't over yet.

Robbie G. (Halas Hall)

I'm pretty sure my kick went over the upright and was good. Is there any reason why goalposts aren't taller, or there's not a laser pointing straight up or something that would make sense to get these calls right?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:46 PM)

Totally agree. I thought the Bears' special teams got jobbed on several calls yesterday.

BG (Downers Grove)

Since Lance Briggs can't play who is going to step up and make the calls for the Defense?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:48 PM)

Jon Bostic

Jeff (Northern Cal)

Is resigning Cutler to huge dollars a must at the end of the year or do you see the Bears doing a complete overhaul/rebuild?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:48 PM)

Depending on how/if/when Cutler comes back this year, I'd slap him with the franchise tag after the season. I believe that is very much in play.

Ryan (Western Springs, IL)

Can we expect that consistent of play out of McCown or would you credit yesterday's success to a porous Washington secondary combined with a lack of game film on him?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:50 PM)

Don't get me wrong, I like McCown. He did a great job in Washington and has plenty of NFL starting experience. He is by no means terrible. But can the Bears go on the road and score enough points to beat Green Bay with Josh McCown? Not sure about that. Can they beat Detroit? Again, not sure. But he can beat bad teams. I feel pretty confident about that.

Stacy (Davenport)

With Shea's horid play have what the negative for switching to 3-4 and see what he can do as OLB?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:52 PM)

Stacy, you don't switch your defense just to accomodate one player. But I do agree that McClellin would be better off as an OLB in a 3-4 defense. But the Bears play a 4-3 front. That's a problem.

Jay (Orlando) [via mobile]

It seems injuries derail the Bears every year, is there anything more the training staff can do to prevent more injuries.

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:53 PM)

Jay, injuries are just part of the game. I think the Bears' training staff does the best job they can. Football is a brutal sport.

Mike (Chicago)

Is Peppers on the roster next season?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:53 PM)

Right now, I'd say no chance.

Devin Hester (Chicago)

Is that the first time we have lost when I took one to the house since the superbowl?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:54 PM)

No. Bears have lost a couple games that Hester scored a return TD in.

Joey (Windy City)

Any chance the Bears try to trade Peppers?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:54 PM)

Who in the world would pick up that contract?

Tim Tebow (Florida)

True or False, I'm a better QB than Jordan Palmer? Second Question, True or False, I'm not on an NFL roster because I'd be a huge distraction?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:56 PM)

False. False. You can't play QB in the NFL.

Brian Urlacher (Fox News)

Can I help?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:56 PM)

Yep, in March. Not now.

Mike (Cleveland)

Sorry JD, but did you say TE is an area of major need? Bennett has done a very nice job when the ball has been thrown his way. He's been one of the more productive TE's in the NFL statistically. I'd say that linebacker should be a priority.

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:57 PM)

Bears need another TE behind Bennett. They just drafted two LBs last year.

Stuart (Chicago)

JD, With the injury to Cutler (so far no information about the severity), does this not only highlight even more the need to draft a QB if not this year definitely next?Thank You

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:58 PM)

Yes. No matter what, the Bears do need to draft a QB next year, in my opinion.

Smith (Wrigleyville)

How ready was Earl to come in as QB? What sort of plays would he be able to run?

Jeff Dickerson
  (3:59 PM)

Probably a lot of handoffs to Matt Forte.

Jeff Dickerson
  (4:01 PM)

Thank you everybody. I have to jump on with Waddle and Silvy next on ESPN 1000. Have a great week.
