Let's talk some Bears. Thank you for being a part of this chat for the next 30 minutes.
If the Bears decide to not re-sign Cutler, where should they look for an immediate replacement?
If they don't re-sign Cutler, the Bears would likely need to draft a QB in the first round. Maybe sign a veteran to bridge the gap, but this seems like the year, regardless if they frachise tag Cutler or not, that the Bears use a high pick on a QB.
Jeff , Thanks for taking my question - how do you rate Wooten at D tackle??? Should bears re sign him at end of season or worry about plethora of other free agents?? Thanks as always for your answer!!
The feedback that I've heard on Wootton has been positive. I think he's a player the Bears would like to re-sign. He's shown the Bears he can be a versatile contributor, although I think his best position is still DE. Wootton is a solid guy. Well liked. Hard worker. And he's a former draft pick. There are plenty of incentives to re-sign him.
with jerod allen being on the trading block and knowing our lack of cap space is there any possibility of the bears being able to work out a deal
I don't think so. I read a report that Allen is still owed around $7.5 million this year. The Bears don't have that kind of cap space. And Phil Emery needs to gain draft picks, not give them up.
What, if anything, do the Bears need to do before the trade deadline Tuesday to improve their chances to reach the playoffs?
This will not be a popular thought, but if the Bears can trade a veteran player or two away and receive draft picks in return before the deadline tomorrow, I think they need to consider doing it. Problem is most of their players are in the final years of their contracts. Teams usually don't like to give away draft picks to get a player for only 9 weeks.
Hey JD! What's it going to take to get the pass rush going? Without pressure the secondary is getting carved up!
The only way the pass-rush improves is if Julius Peppers goes on a tear in the final nine games.
What's a realistic expectation for the offense on Monday night? Over or under 21 points?
I'd take the over. Packers are still beat up on defense.
Do we have a chance to make the playoffs?
There's always a chance, but I believe the Bears need to beat the Lions next week to stay alive in the Wildcard chase. To me, Green Bay is going to win the NFC North. Aaron Rodgers is too good and the Packers will eventually get most of their injured players back. Since one of the NFC Wildcards is coming out of the West (Seattle or SF), the Bears can't afford to get swept by the Lions in the season series. That would make it extremely difficult for the Bears to catch Detroit for the final Wildcard spot.
What do you think about the bears selecting Johnny manziel in next years draft?
I don't hate the idea, but we have to see who is still available when the Bears go on the clock. Is Manziel the best QB in the draft? Probably not. But he has certain traits that Phil Emery is known the like. I wouldn't call it a crazy idea.
What did you think about the comments of Merriweather to Marshall?
I don't see how one compares to the other. Meriweather took it too far. Marshall can never erase what he's done in the past, and what he's accused of doing is terrible, don't get me wrong, but at least Marshall has tried to turn his life around and change his behaviors. The same cannot be said about Meriweather - the most reckless player in the NFL.
Any chance the Bears can keep Calvin under 329 in a couple weeks?
I think so. But can they keep Reggie Bush under 150 yards rushing?
Hey JD, do you think Matt Forte reaches a 100 yds rushing against the packers?
I actually think he does. The Bears need to lean on Forte with Cutler out, and I believe they will to a certain extent.
What veterans do the Bears have with years left on their contract that might be attractive to contenders to trade for...Peppers and Hester?
Do you see the Bears using a 1st or 2nd rounder on a Safety the next draft? Or do you see them targeting Free Agency for that position?
The Bears have always had the philosophy that safeties can be found anywhere in the draft. I disagree. This team needs a homerun hitter at safety. I still think the Bears need to address QB and DL early in the draft, but I put safety and CB right up there near the top of list also. Wright and Steltz are set to be free agents. At the bare minimum, the Bears will need to bring in at least one new safety next year. Maybe more.
JD, on the bright side have been impressed with our o line, what are your thoughts?
Jay, I agree. I think the OL, and the offense in general really, has been a major positive. The Bears probably will need to change one of the starters on the OL heading into 2014, but overall the group seems to be in good shape.
I am surprised that trestman said there was no lineup changes at Safety. Are Steltz and Walters really that bad? I am of the thought it can't get any worse? Your thoughts?
I'm also surprised. I think competition at safety this week was appropriate give the results over the last couple of weeks.
Does anybody want Michael Bush? Or can we at least use him more?
That's another good name to throw out there. What does he get you in return?
Is Julius Peppers hurt?
The Bears say that Peppers is not hurt.
What did the Bears think of local product Mike Kafka from the workout? Was he strictly there to throw to other guys working out?
I believe he was just there to throw the ball to the receivers and tight ends. The Bears seem pretty content with Jordan Palmer as the No. 2 QB until Cutler returns from his injury.
With a totally absent pass rush, do you think Aaron Rodgers will have career highs in passing yards and QBR ?
Maybe. Can the Bears stop Eddie Lacy? GB always seems to run the ball well vs. the Bears. That is a big concern going into Monday night.
I think it's safe to say the Bears can't franchise Cutler and keep Peppers next year at 20m cap hit each. What would happen cap-wise if we they release Peppers this offseason? Are the Bears on the hook for anything?
Yes. The Bears would have some dead money they can spread out over the next two years. Around $4.2 million a year.
If the Bears don't dismiss Tucker during the season could we see a change in the offseason?
Can't really say for sure. That's the call of Marc Trestman. I don't think we know him well enough yet to know for sure if he's willing to make such a move. Plus, I believe that Tucker received a multi-year contract. Bears don't like eating money if they don't have to.
Is Lovie Tampa bound?
That would be a good spot for him. Bring in the ultimate players coach after Schiano upset the entire locker room. I also think Lovie still owns a home in the Tampa area.
Thank you everybody. Don't forget Brandon Marshall is live with Waddle and Silvy from 5-6 p.m. on ESPN 1000. Have a great rest of the week.
