Hopefully this chat delivers more treats than tricks. Let's go!
Which do you prefer: A team that wins all its games or one with losses but lots of "style points"?
That is a tough question to answer, Trevor, because there are a bunch of factors that go into every win and loss. I mean if we are talking about a 12-0 Northern Illinois team over a one-loss Stanford team with or without style points, then I go with Stanford. Wins should obviously be most important of all. I am not a huge "style point" person. I do not think teams should run up the score to impress people, if that is what you are asking.
What does Miami have to do to win at Doak, something they have done 2 of the last 3 and 4 of the last 6
I will give you a sneak peek to the post we have coming for tomorrow where I list 3 keys for Miami. Aside from the usual limiting turnovers/penalties/mistakes -- 1. Establish the run to help control the clock. 2. Be much better on third-down, which also helps control the clock. 3. Limit the big plays on D from the WRs.
Do Hurricane fans have Winston envy?
I don't know, do they?
Andrea, as a die-hard Noles fan, guess I was among the hundreds- if not thousands, second-guessing Jimbo?s decision to play subs on defense the entire second half last Sat. His rationale was to keep his starters healthy as the game was safely in-hand but I?m wondering if his cautiousness may have cost the team the biggest prize of all- a dance card in the bcscg, especially when taking into consideration the U?s tepid win over the Deacs. Style points and full pedal to the metal dominance were required, in my opinion, to help overcome sos comparisons with Oregon. It would be a real shame for Nole Nation if a perfect season goes unrewarded because of the 17 pts scored Sat by NC St? hmmm the same game result number that derailed us last year.
I do not think a 63-14 win over NC State would have kept FSU No. 2 in the rankings, Mike. The SOS changed after Oregon played UCLA and FSU played a so-so ACC team. Basically, Pac-12 SOS is going to be helping Oregon out, no matter how badly FSU beats teams.
Dinich can't honestly think that Miami can score 35 on FSU defense? C'mon AA that is ridiculous
Ask her Monday when she stops by to chat.
QUESTION TO ANDREA ADELSON AT 4.25 PM FSU OR CAINES
I'm still waiting for AA and HD to clean Renegade's stall for a week. From what I've seen from the Canes, I don't see them slowing Jameis and company down. Is the point spread understated, just right, or overstated? The difference in defensive plays for the teams is marked.
Woah woah woah why are we cleaning Renegade's stall? We both picked FSU to win. On first glance I thought the point spread was a wee bit high. I think FSU will win by double-digits but I'm just not sure it is going to be a full-on blowout. It could very well be 51-10. I think FSU is that good. But I think Miami is going to be way more geared up for this game and its last two. This is a team that has played into the 4Q and does not give up when there is a foot on their throats. Now granted, the FSU foot is a might more powerful than the UNC and Wake foot, but still. Miami believes it can hang.
Hey AA, The Deacs are improving each week, especially on defense. What can we expect to see in the future years to come? Price is leaving next year, they will need another leader to emerge at the QB spot. Who can you see stepping in as the future QB? Cameron? Thompson? i really like the mobility of Sousa, but he needs to work on footwork and making plays with his arm and not his feet. Thanks AA
Forget about QB, they also have to live without Camp, Nikita and a lot of other key contributors on this team. I saw a stat earlier today that Tanner Price ranks second in the nation on the active starts streak with 40. He is going to be really tough to replace. I have not seen much out of the other QBs so it is tough to say who is going to step into that role. No doubt Wake has to develop somebody because Price has been the anchor there for so long.
Miami keys tomorrow are actually be better on 2nd down and 3rd down D. Their 2nd and medium play calling/execution has been horrendous the last few few games. Their 3rd down D has been brutal also especially early in games where the Canes have had a total of 7 plays in the first quarter against Wake and GT.
Great point, Scott. Their third-down D last week vs. Wake, especially in the first half, was awful.
HD and AA adamantly picked Clemson the other week. Waiting for you 2 to pay your debts...
Oh riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight ........
Any chance Clemson's offense gets back on track this weekend and scores 30+?
I think I picked Clemson to score 38.
I had a feeling that Duke would give VT a good game. VT's offense is offensive and has been for several years. Have you seen any improvement from this year's VT's offense vs years past? Shouldn't they try to recruit better at the qb position if they want to win against top dogs in the conference in the coming years?
No the offense has not improved this year, and that has to be a big source of disappointment given the changes that were made to the coaching staff. The problem, as you alluded to, is the personnel has remained largely the same. Logan Thomas has struggled, there is no doubt. But he still gets absolutely no help from the guys around him. No run game to speak of. Offensive line still inconsistent. If VT had a real run game, the way they had two years ago, this team would be a real national contender.
As a BC alum, I've enjoyed the passion that Coach Addazio has brought to the team/program, but the on-field performance is similar to what we've seen in recent years. When do you think this passion will translate to wins? And do you think Andre Williams is an NFL-caliber RB?
I disagree, I do not think on-the-field performance is similar to what we have seen out of BC. First off, BC has more wins this year. Second off, these guys play hard, and they play very physically. Look at the run game this year compared to a year ago with essentially the same players. As for Andre Williams, I would want a guy like that on my team. He is a tough, physical runner who can pick up yards in a hurry. When will we see BC with more wins? You are already seeing it this year. What BC needs is a QB to fit its system so you will have to sit tight for that.
How badly do you think Coley wants to have FSU's offense? Do you think he made his move a little prematurely, or do you think it was the right time for him to jump ship?
He wanted to call plays, and that was not going to happen at FSU. He had to make a move.
How would you grade Pitt and Syracuse so far in their first year in the ACC? Not just from a wins/losses standpoint, but how they fit in, optimism for the future, etc.?
I think it is a little early to answer this question. Pitt seems to be in better position than Syracuse at this point, but the Panthers have gotten into a little rut here of late. Given the nature of their respective divisions, I think Pitt might have a more optimistic future.
Hi Andrea, I saw your link earlier about ACC attendance. Is this simply a product of winning & losing, or does it mirror a larger national trend?
It definitely mirrors a larger national trend. There is serious concern about falling attendance across the NCAA. Attendance was down 3 percent in the first month of the season compared to last year. Given the ease with which fans can watch games on TV/mobile phones, and the cost to actually attend games these days, I would not be surprised if these numbers continued to fall.
Why are the big problems at VT continuing on Offense and & field goals at the Duke game ?
You got me, Robert. You would think 8 games into the season VT would have some answers for both, but they have none. Frank Beamer said this week he had a talk with Cody Journell and has confidence in him to get back on track. What is the evidence there? What is the evidence VT is making strides on O? The Hokies regressed last week.
If the Canes can get away from the stupid stretch play in short yardage and Morris can hit his easy throws i.e. 5 yard outs for 1st downs, rather than throw them into the 6th row, we've got a small chance. That along with my comment above are our keys in my opinion. With that said I may start drinking heavily in case I need to get to bed rather early.
I talked to Stephen and he told me he knows he has to do better on first down so they can be in much more manageable second/third down situations. I honestly think Miami could stay in this game until the 4Q ... or they could be completely out of it by midway through the second. Really, it all depends on Miami because we all have a pretty good idea of what FSU can do.
If you had to bet right now, today, on the 2 teams who will end up being in Pasadena, would you pick FSU to be one of them?
We have FSU in the national title game right now. I am going to stick with my pick that Stanford beats Oregon next week.
After Miami, which games poses the biggest threat to FSU's road to being undefeated? And which of the other top 4 teams do you see losing before the end of the season?
Check out the ACC blog, we have good stuff on there :) Heather and I debated that very topic Tuesday. I said Florida for a few reasons, but mainly the Gators have the best D FSU will play all year and Will Muschamp is probably going to be licking his chops trying to game plan for that one, so he can get all the Gator fans off his back with a signature win.
If the Noles are successful on Sat. night, and then re-play a 1-loss UM team in the ACC championship game and wins again (both possible if not likely), then FSU will have beaten 3 Top Ten Teams and those teams (collectively could have just the 3 losses to FSU). How then does Oregon -- w/but chance to beat a Top Ten team which lost to UTAH!!! -- have a better SOS?
I am not a SOS expert nor a computer expert nor a BCS expert. I have FSU No. 1 in my own power rankings based on opponents played. But from what I understand, the overall strength of the Pac-12 is a benefit to Oregon at this point. And let's not forget, voters are not budging on Bama and Oregon 1-2 if they remain unbeaten. I think that is the larger question because the polls have 2/3 the vote. Why are the human voters simply not budging???
Given VT has a Bud Foster defense again, do you think VT could hang with FSU even though the offense is terrible?
No. The offense would be a giant anchor weighing the team down. I mean the VT D would be on the field for a majority of the game. How would that type of effort be sustained for, say, 40 minutes against the best O they have faced and a potential Heisman winner?
Is Cutcliffe nipping at my heels as the best CFB coach in Duke history? Does he surpass me before he leaves?
He has to win an ACC championship, right?
Of course you are right on all points. I just think FSU would go undefeated in the Pac 12 this year (just as Oregon would in the ACC).
Do you think Florida State or Oregon would win on a neutral field?
How are you and Heather predicting Miami to score 24 & 35 points on FSU? Have you 2 watch Miami play?
I cannot speak for HD. From my perspective ... BC scored 34 with a similar-type power run game. I think the Canes will have some chances to score. Not enough to win, but this is not a completely inept offense. Not like NC State or Maryland. famous last words ...
Rumor has it that Superman dressed up as Jameis Winston for Halloween. Can you confirm or deny this?
Isn't that the same joke as Superman wears Tim Tebow pajamas. Let's do better people!
Why does Morris keep backpedaling while trying to throw down field? Is he afraid to take a hit?
His ankle has really taken a toll on him, his mechanics and footwork are all off, and I think it has impacted him mentally, too.
Couple of very important questions: What was your favorite Halloween costume you ever wore? What was your favorite type of candy to get?
Pete with the most important question of the day! My favorite costume. I was in fifth grade and I dressed up as a NY Mets baseball player. They were my favorite team at the time, living in Florida with no baseball team of my own. They were my dad's team so I had to go. Got a Darryl strawberry jersey and everything. Favorite candy is ALWAYS DOUBLE BUBBLE. ALWAYS.
AA Did u see any of the World Series last night?
As a follow up to that last question, no I did not see the World series. I no longer follow baseball the way I did when I was a little girl.
If I gave up 50+ points per game against FSU the last 2 years, I wouldn't suggest that we (Clemson) could win half the games. On another note, would Beamer get shown the door if they lose another game or 2?
Yeah I am not sure why Dabo said what he said. He was trying to defend his team but it just came out wrong. ... I don't think Beamer is going anywhere at this point.
Does the fear of losing his recruiting class buy London another year in Charlottesville?
That and some pretty hefty buyouts.
I see the one necessity for a UM upset is to dominate special teams. FSU has the advantage on Offense and Defense so Miami must win the turnover battle and get at least one Special teams impact play.
Miami does have the edge at punter.
I know exactly why you guys said that Miami could score 24 and 35 pts. 1) FSU has not been challenged this season, except in the Clemson game, and Clemson's offense is one-dimensional. 2) Miami has a better OL and arguably better RB than BC, who put up 34 pts on this same FSU defense. 3) Miami has athletic, talented playmakers all over the field, and can strike quickly on anyone at anytime.
Gary said it much more articulately than AA.
Its a rivalry game AA, anything can happen...
Andrea....when is the media gonna figure out that this year's SEC is just another conference? Bama is really good.......everybody else is just another football team like you'd find in any conference. LSU and TAM being ranked as high as they are with 2 losses is ridiculous.
Hey that is part of the reason I have FSU at no. 1 in my rankings.
AA, will you tell all these FSU fans that Miami still has a top 10 offense in terms of yards per play, still averages 40 points per game, still runs for over 5.5 yards per rush, and is still top 10 in yards per pass attempt. I've never seen such disrespect for an undefeated, top 10 Miami team. Perfect spot for them on Saturday- no pressure at all.
That is right, JT, and I can all but guarantee that is what Al Golden has hammered home all week. No pressure on Miami. All the pressure on FSU. The Noles are in a tough spot. If they blow out Miami, then everybody is going to say that the win was over a very overrated team. If they win a close game, then everybody is going to say they are not as good as expected because they couldn't whup an overrated team. Kinda like the Northern Illinois game last year but with way more on the line.
If you had to win just one game or die...who you got... Johnny Football or Famous Jameis?
Or DIE? Boy you guys are just raising up those stakes aren't you? Famous J baby.
Tell JT those stats came against FAU and Savannah St.
What, FSU did not roll up stats like that vs. Nevada and Bethune?
I'm pretty surprised that almost every prediction I see has Miami scoring close to 30 points this weekend. FSU's defense has been really good since the BC game and assuming they force Morris to beat them, I don't see how the Canes are going to approach 30 points.
Quite possible they won't.
Clemson set the bar so low that Miami has absolutely nothing to lose.
Duke Johnson at KR and Stacy Coley at PR, don't you think Miami has the advantage in Special Teams overall?
Aguayo is a big advantage for FSU. Kenny Shaw does a nice job. Pretty close in that department if you ask me.
Who wins the intra state rivalry game between NC State and UNC
I picked NC State to win.
FSU also rolled up stats on Clemson though.
They did. That is why I have FSU at No. 1.
Do you think the Heels will become bowl eligible?
Who wins the trenches battle...FSU DL or Miami OL?
I actually think this is one area where Miami has an edge just based on the way they have played all season, and most especially the last two games. It is hard to find another matchup that favors the Canes.
Everyone on here knows I am a HUGE FSU fan, but frankly there is nothing you can tell me about game since FSU is going to shut miami down and up.The real question, will Cuttcliff get an offer at a big time school at the end of this season?
I believe his name has come up for several big jobs the last few years and each time he said no. I think he is happy at Duke at this stage of his career. Could be wrong, but I have never really thought of him as a somebody who would bolt for a major job. He already coached in the SEC. Not like he needs it for the ego boost or the $$.
Can BC spring the upset this week vs VT?
Heather picked BC. I picked VT. I do not see the Hokies being as bad as they were last week on offense. That doesn't mean they are going to be good. They will just be better than last week.
AA, Miami is Ohio State and Ohio State is Miami. Both are getting no love but for Miami it's clear why they aren't. Do you think Stephen Morris does a trick and turns into a competent qb on Sat or does he throw 4 ints against my Noles?
I think he will play better. I am not going to put a number on interceptions. But he did play better last week vs. Wake. He did not have an INT. Miami does not need him to be somebody who he is not. He needs to manage the game, make smart decisions and take what the D gives him. That could be a lot, considering the way Miami runs the ball.
I don't think any of us are complaining about FSU being favored, because they should be favored. They have impressed me and many others all season, and deserve all of the attention that they're getting. However, Miami is no pushover and they are 7-0 for a reason. Yes, it has been ugly at times but this is a good team that is really improving at a fast pace and could challenge FSU, especially in a rivalry game. Go Canes!
I think FSU or Oregon either one would beat Bama......
Sure, why not. Bama is not an indestructible force. They have lost games the last two years.
Does the ACC (FSU and UM) start playing little brother teams (UCF) on a regular basis?
They have played USF for a while now.
Is the Hokies defense the best in school history?
I think it is appropriate to look at that at the end of the year so you can do some statistical comparisons.
whatever happen to Seantrel Henderson???
Great question, Terry. Talk about an enigma. He is not listed as a starter this week, served another suspension earlier this week and just does not seem to have it all together. I talked to him in August and he seemed really focused and ready for a good season. For whatever reason, he has not been able to get over whatever is holding him back.
Happy Halloween. Does Anybody in your Family go Trick or Treating Tonight?
Yes! We are going to go after this chat to a little party in the community nearby!
Does Heather Dinich have a boyfriend? I think she's really cute.
She is married but I will tell her you think so!
As a follow up to Smitty's question...do you think Morris is the reason that Miami has struggled in some games, or are there other primary reasons?
He was not the sole reason last week. The defense came out flat and could not stop WF on third down. I think he was a giant reason vs UNC, but the D in that game needed a GPS to locate Eric Ebron. So it has been a combination of factors.
In terms of getting to the natty, is FSU better off facing a 10-2 VA Tech or 11-1 Miami in ACC championship game (i.e. is it better style-wise to thump each team once or Miami twice)?
I am going to guess FSU is better off facing the highest ranked team.
What do you think about the acc so far ?
It has been a fun season with the Top 10 matchups but the middle of the league has got to pick it up. That is what is separating some of the other leagues from the ACC at this point.
Lets say Oregon loses a game, but Mariota has a good game, would you still consider him ahead of Winston?
I have Winston No. 1 on my Heisman ballot right now.
What ended up happening to Preston Dewey and what's Olsen's progress?
Dewey had to quit football because of a back injury. Should be a good QB battle for next year but figuring Ryan Williams has the edge going into camp.
I think it should also be noted that Philip Dorsett is still out of action. How do you think Miami's receivers will manage, with Rashawn Scott back in the mix?
Good point, Gary. Losing Dorsett definitely hurts, no doubt. Stacy Coley has really grown up here in the last month and he had a nice game vs. WF. But I am interested to see how he does vs. that FSU secondary.
Do you Miami may be underrated? As strange as that sounds given that they're #7, it has sort of been the assumption by everyone that Miami is overrated and doesn't belong in the top 10. However, looking at Wake forest's past two games (steamrolling NC State and BC) and North Carolina (easily handling BC, as well as having a very tough schedule and losing some heart breakers, plus Miami was dinged up for that game) could it be that those two wins were more impressive than people think, and that Miami is actually a quality ball club?I guess everyone's suspicions will be confirmed or debunked come bowl season.
No, Tim, neither of those wins were impressive. But you are right. I think our suspicions will be confirmed or debunked Saturday.
AA, doesn't it feel like Syracuse is in over it's head? They get blown out 56-0 by GT; a team which Syracuse considered themselves being equal to.
But then they went on the road and beat NC State. I think Cuse is probably more along the level of Wake Forest at this point, that is why I think the game this weekend is a toss up.
Whichever wins Saturday, FSU or Canes, if they both then win out regular season, but Saturday's loser wins the ACCCG, would they still be in the NCG scenario?
I have a hard time seeing any one-loss ACC team in the NC scenario.
Which corner do you think will be better by the time they become draft eligible? Ronald Darby, Kendall Fuller, or Brandon Facyson?
WOW that is a tough question. I think I will defer to Todd McShay or Mel Kiper on that one. Yes. I weaseled my way out of answering.
Great chat. Appreciate the analysis. Happy Halloween and go Canes!
Thanks, Gary, same to you!
I really believe Morris needs to utilize his TE's going up against a very fast, talented, but small 2ndary...
Clive Walford has been great all year.
Weird year in college football where teams are getting more respect for LOSING football games, than teams get for WINNING football games. Stanford loses to Utah, a Wake Forest equivalent, but that's still okay compared to Miami actually winning these games. I'd much rather play poorly and win, than lose like Stanford, Oklahoma, LSU, OK State, etc.. to mediocre teams.
I was very surprised to see Stanford ahead of Miami. Even though Stanford was my pick at the beginning of the year to go to the NC Game. I am not sure how that loss can be overlooked. That was a bad loss.
How has Drew Allen done at Syracuse this year? I'm taking it not very well......if so, not really surprised....he never impressed much at OU.
He has been benched.
Hows the transition for you from big east to acc?
Well let's just say I never covered a national championship contender the last two years in the Big East.
Who do Miami fans hate more...ND or FSU?
Emphatic enough for you? :)
OK guys that is all the time we have for today. Thanks for chatting with me, and enjoy your Halloween!!
