Chat with Nick Friedell

Nick Friedell
  (1:02 PM)

What's going on everybody ... let's get this chat rolling.

Cesar (Highland, IN) [via mobile]

We all saw what Derrick Rose did this preseason and thought he would start the season off without missing a beat. Is there really that much of a difference from preseason to regular season to playoffs, and if so is this a clear indicator that Derrick was right in sitting out last post season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:05 PM)

I said all along last year that I didn't think Rose should come back unless he was mentally ready to go. As time goes on I think it will become clearer that Rose made the right choice. He didn't feel like he could be the same player last year because he knew what kind of curve there would be in his return. He is still finding his rhythm now -- he'll be back to his old self soon.

Chris (Glen Ellyn, IL)

Do you think Rose is taking too many shots or do you think the lack of foul calls is skewing his percentage?

Nick Friedell
  (1:06 PM)

Boozer said last night he doesn't think Rose is getting the calls he used to get -- I think it's more a function that Derrick is just pressing a little bit right now. He will get his timing back and be all right soon.

Jimmy (CT)

Hinrich had a good game off the bench in 16 minutes...how important will he need to be this year?

Nick Friedell
  (1:07 PM)

Hinrich is going to be huge. He is the safety net for Thibs. He can run the offense and still play solid defense. The question is: Can he stay healthy? Recent history suggests he probably can't but we'll see.

Tom (Chicago)

How is Noah's groin injury?

Nick Friedell
  (1:08 PM)

He says it's fine. He played 37 minutes last night so I'd take that as a pretty good indication he's feeling better.

Tom (Chicago)

How serious is Derrick's neck injury? Will be he playing in the next game?

Nick Friedell
  (1:09 PM)

He said after last night's game the crick in his neck is still there. He'll continue to get treatment and then he'll see how it goes.

Mike (Glen Ellyn) [via mobile]

Boozer is looking fantastic. Do you think Thibs will trust him a little more in the fourth?

Nick Friedell
  (1:10 PM)

The answer to your question is no. Boozer has been very solid offensively the last couple games but Thibs isn't going to leave him in down the stretch in a close game. Boozer's defense has improved the last couple years but he still isn't as good a defender as Gibson or Noah.

Tom (Chicago)

Nick,Just ignore any Deng trades, Boozer amnesties, or Mirotic questions please. Let's talk about the here and now. Dunleavy seems to have had a hard time getting used to playing with this team. What do you think he can do to improve and get his % up?

Nick Friedell
  (1:15 PM)

He is going through the same transition that Kyle Korver and Marco Belinelli went through when they came to Chicago. Both of those guys struggled to play defense the way Thibs wanted when they arrived. I'm convinced Dunleavy will help this team -- it's just going to take him some time to get adjusted. The key for him will be to find open shots with Rose. Maybe Thibs will run a couple sets for him over the next week.

Jeff (Anytown, USA)

Thanks for chatting Nick... The bulls big man depth has me a bit concerned with Noah just getting back to playing and I'm not too confident in Nazr. What do you think of the bulls looking to add an additional veteran big man that Thibs is comfortbale with? Maybe a Kurt Thomas

Nick Friedell
  (1:18 PM)

The lack of depth in the big man department is a huge weakness for this team. They will continue to hope that Noah stays healthy. Expect Taj Gibson to see a lot of time at the 5 spot this season.

Derrick (Garden City)

Hi Nick, do you think that Thibs will keep playing Deng and Butler 40+ minutes a game?

Nick Friedell
  (1:19 PM)

No doubt. I think Butler will lead the league in minutes this season. Deng won't be very far behind.

Tim (Gainesville, FL)

How long do you think it will take for the Bulls offense to get into a rhythm? Seems like Rose is trying to do a little too much right now, despite his game winner.

Nick Friedell
  (1:24 PM)

Noah talked about this last night. He believes the biggest reason is because of the fact this group (Noah, Rose, Butler, Boozer and Deng) haven't played together. They're all convinced things will turn around soon. I think it will take a few more weeks for them to get into a rhythm -- maybe by the time they make their west coast swing.

Justin (Chicago)

From what i've seen so far, it appears that the Bulls biggest weakness is being able to score. What expectations are there for Dunleavy in terms of scoring?

Nick Friedell
  (1:29 PM)

The issue is the same as it always was for the Bulls. When Rose is being guarded by a bigger player (like LeBron) or just doesn't have it going that night where else will the Bulls turn? They still don't have the type of primary scorer alongside Rose to help them. The key for them will be to get their offense into a rhythm and get the motion going. Thibs is confident it can work but it will take some time.

Sarah Spain (Chicago)

Have you learned any new recipes?

Nick Friedell
  (1:29 PM)

Yeah, I make a mean grilled cheese.

Brian (Woodridge)

Nick, Do you see Snell working his way into the rotation this year? It seems like the Bulls are only 8 deep and can use an extra body to take some minutes.

Nick Friedell
  (1:29 PM)

No. Snell has a chance to be good -- but I don't expect Thibs to play him much at all this season.

Phil (Des Moines)

It seems like Rose is not getting his teammates involved when he is on the court. He seems to look to get himself going first. I thought when Hinrich was in the game the offense went smoother and he found shots for Boozer. How do you rate Rose game management so far

Nick Friedell
  (1:32 PM)

It's all a matter of him being comfortable again. I think he is trying to do too many things at once right now. He knows he has to get other people involved again -- it will all come in time.

Andrew (Chicago)

Hey Nick, with hindsight being 20/20, do you think the Bulls think they made a mistake in choosing to sign Dunleavy over Nate or Marco? Clearly the Bulls will struggle all season with not having someone other than Rose who can create their own shot off the dribble. That's something both Marco and Nate were able to do, and Dunleavy is not.

Nick Friedell
  (1:36 PM)

No, not right now. While we're on this topic -- I do not understand the over love for both Nate and Marco right now. Nate had some great games, especially in the playoffs, but the reality is he struggled to run the offense and get his teammates involved most of the time. He was also a poor defender. Belinelli barely played in the first few months of last season. He also had some nice games but he struggled defensively as well. People have forgotten how much both of these guys struggled early on with the Bulls.

robert from bensenville [via mobile]

Why did Mike James make the roster?? Do we really need 4 point guards?? Thought we could use an extra big man in case Noahs injurys flared up again..

Nick Friedell
  (1:40 PM)

To answer your first question -- because Thibs trusts James. To answer your second question -- Did you really think Dexter Pittman or D.J. White were going to make that much of a difference?

James (Lombard)

Teague can't seem to crack the rotation because of his poor shooting, would it behoove the Bulls to move him and bring in a perimeter threat such as Jimmer Fredette? I dont love him but he can really shoot the three ball.

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

I don't think Bulls fans should expect to see Jimmer here any time soon. He doesn't play the kind of defense that Thibs likes. I'm sure how much defense he actually plays when he is in the game.

Edwin (Bronx)

Can Jimmy Butler become that second or third scorer the Bulls need this year? He is legit defensively and seems to be more aggressive on the offensive side.

Nick Friedell
  (1:43 PM)

I don't believe so this season -- but the Bulls are hoping down the line he may be able to. If Jimmy can start knocking down the long range shots -- the Bulls will be in business.

Jason (Minnesota)

The Bulls have only 1 three point shooter in Dunleavy, while the Heat have 4 or 5 any given night. Do you see this as a huge problem going up against Miami?

Nick Friedell
  (1:44 PM)

Yes, it's a problem. But the bigger problem is that the Heat have LeBron James and the Bulls do not.

Edwin (Bronx)

Are there any shooters out there that can play some defense that the Bulls can look at getting? It seems like we dont have enough scoring because anyone the bulls would be interested in that can score the ball does not play enough defense.

Nick Friedell
  (1:46 PM)

If you find a few call Gar and Pax. They'll be happy to listen.

James (Lombard)

Aaron Afflalo would be a great addition to this team, he is an above average defender and a plus 3 point shooter. Do you think the Bulls have the pieces to get a player of his caliber? I would think the Magic would want to start Oladipo at some point.

Nick Friedell
  (1:50 PM)

The Magic -- or any team trying to work a deal with the Bulls -- would want Jimmy Butler and/or Mirotic and the Charlotte pick? Would you do that deal? No.

Nick Friedell
  (1:52 PM)

I'm out of here guys. If you're at a game this week come over and say hello. I'll talk to everybody from the United Center next week.
