Fantasy Sports with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric, we've got one hour to answer as many important questions as possible and hopefully have a little fun along the way. Because if it isn't fun, why play? OK, nine weeks done in football, here we go!

Unkle Rusty (Seattle)

I am sure I am not alone in my dilemma, but I don't have a deep bench due to injuries and not sure I can hoard the K.C. Defense this week. You hanging on to them for a one-week replacement knowing they have some tough offenses ahead?

Eric Karabell
  (11:05 AM)

I have, at times in the past, left a bye week defense in my lineup if the only ones on free agency were so bad I was concerned I would lose points. And the Chiefs are amazing, having outscored EVERY non-QB except Jamaal Charles. But then again, they've got the Broncos twice in the coming weeks. I'd look elsewhere and not chase past points, but wouldn't pick up the Jags or Redskins to replace them.

Shane (Wisconsin)

The David Wilson question.....do I hang onto him any longer?

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

Until we get clarity on his situation, can't do anything. If Giants say he can play this week or next, he's worth owning. If they say he's out another month, punt.

Steve (Wilmywood, NC)

RG3 is kinda killing me lately and I'm gonna gamble a bit this week. Just for this week I'm thinking Foles over Keenum and RG3. What do you think?

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

I think each is a reasonable option so it's fine, but my rankings have Griffin the best ranked of that crew. It's a pretty nice matchup.

Elvis (Tupelo, MS)

I am a Ridley owner in a league where Vereen is STILL on waivers. My bench contains TRich, Harvin, JJones, Woodhead andAndre Brown - who do I drop for Vereen??

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Nobody. Everyone loves the players returning from injury but there's no way Ridley will simply be benched now. He's scored 4 consecutive games, 6 TDs in all. Frankly, I have little confidence - and said this a month ago - that Harvin would play soon and play well. Still hasn't played.

Robert (Fl)

EK, am I crazy to start Locker over Romo this week?

Eric Karabell
  (11:09 AM)

I like Locker, but that's a bit of a stretch. Romo's pretty safe.

Muke (Jonestown)

Prognosis on Cutler for rest of season? Decent schedule for playoffs. Worth a waiver claim if your other QB is Pryor?

Eric Karabell
  (11:09 AM)

Yep. Not sure Cutler plays this week, but the schedule is nice and he's got weapons. Was playing well.

CC (Work)

Any reason to take a shot at McCown over a struggling Matt Ryan this week? Especially since Ryan faces Seattle?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

If McCown starts, sure. But we might not have clarity for a few days there.

Brian (CHI)

Alshon for Gio Benard a fair trade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

In a vacuum looks pretty good.

Michael (SC)

I can't believe I'm actually asking this...start Tolbert (vs SF) over Rice (vs Cin)??

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

Tolbert scores a TD every week. Rice does not. And Rice isn't doing much else. I ranked Rice better but not by a ton.

Todd (Philly)

Is Jordy Nelson an upgrade over T. Smith even with Rodger's injury?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

I'm really not worried about Jordy Nelson at all. I downgraded him a bit in the end of season ranks, but look at the GB schedule: Philly, Giants, Minny. And Seneca Wallace is no star, but he'll find Jordy enough. I think people are overrating the effect on the Packers and their fantasy options.

Todd (CA)

Like many others lost Rodgers. Big Ben or Foles to replace him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

I'll take Roethlisberger.

Malek (Chi)

I've pretty much wrapped up a playoff spot. Playoffs start wk 13 in my league. Would it be smart to trade RG3 for Rodgers?

Eric Karabell
  (11:13 AM)

There's still some risk that Rodgers needs to miss more than 3 or 4 weeks, and I do like Griffin's December sked... it's a risk. I see the point and it could really work out, but I'd make sure I had another reliable QB as well.

Scott (Chicago)

I'm out of tissues crying over Trent Richardson's poor season. It just won't get any better will it?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

Honestly, I don't see why it would. He was fine last year, but in retrospect, it wasn't the knee woes making him look slow. He just was slow.

Jon (KC)

Can you shed any light on whether Doug Martin will play again this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

Nope. I'm skeptical he plays this month, but the Bucs - in their infinite winless wisdom - seem to think he could play on Monday. We shall see. Keep him rostered just in case I guess. But he wasn't doing much when healthy and Mike James just ran for 150 on Seattle.

Nick (Chicago)

Eric! What do you expect from Michael Crabtree when he returns? Is he an automatic start over guys like Shorts or J. Jones?

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

No, that's premature. He's an automatic add. But Shorts is a borderline top-20 WR. Same with Jones. I'd like to see Crabtree play a game or two first.

Matt (The Bluegrass)

I need your brilliant expert analysis of a possible blockbuster trade pretty, pretty please! Which side of this trade would you prefer...Eddie Lacy and Antonio Brown for Desean Jackson, Mike James and Jordan Cameron? I have Jordan Reed too so trading away Cameron doesn't destroy me. I appreciate any help you can provide.0

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

The Lacy side. The guy is a fantasy monster. And Brown is top-10 this week, too.

Steve (Houston)

RB's are hurting. Andre Brown or Joique Bell? Thank you.

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

Bell has been quiet so I'd add Brown and see what happens. But I think people are a bit too confident in him. The Giants have a lot of RBs.

Homer (Springfield)

Does Marques Colston play this Sunday? Is it smart to drop him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

Don't know ... and no. Guy has a track record and Drew Brees. Be a bit more patient.

James (Hoboken)

Do you think Gio's latest performance gets him more touches going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

No. I think the Bengals have been pretty clear on the plan and they continue to execute it. This is not a 25-touch RB. That said, Gio is in my top 20 and usually is.

DL (Chicago)

Thoughts on Roddy's ROS value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

Thinking about it makes me sad. Typing it in here would make you sad.

Jack Burton (Little China)

Any light at the end of the tunnel for Mike Wallace?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

Lot of targets, gets yards from time to time, but doesn't score. I don't see why that would change. But know that he is on pace for nearly 1,000 yards. It could have been worse.

Joe (Miami)

I need at TE for the week with Gronkowski out. Thinking of trading Rice and Douglas for Reed and TY Hilton. Is Hilton enough of an upgrade to make this trade? My only other option is to drop Nicks or Ivory for someone like Wright to fill in this week. Help!

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

I generally don't trade really good players just to fill in for a tight end on a bye week, but in this case, with Rice doing so little, it makes sense. Just be ready to re-trade Reed for a RB after the week! I'd try to add Wright but drop someone else less valuable.

Zac (The Bay)

Do you ride the flex carousel and continually get burned this season? I do. ROS between Mathews, Wallace and Harvin?

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

It's all a carousel, really. I'll be going with Mathews among these options this week. Prob next week too. Yeah, terrible in Week 9. But 100 rushing yards the 2 games prior. Everyone wants to simply forget that. It did happen!

Mrs. Karabell (The Karabell household)

Love you, but I will own you in our fantasy matchup this weekend!

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

You always do.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Any word on Julius Thomas? Should I just start Jordan Reed on Thursday?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

That would be safer at this point, yes.

Erick (NJ)

Can you give me some insight on Zac Stacy? After two very productive weeks, is he a must start ROS? Tough match up against Indy this weekend.

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

It's not a tough matchup. Colts get run on. And he's pretty much a must start now.

Mike (SLC)

Any thoughts on Nicks? Will he be any good again?

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Ever? Yes, I will say he will be good at some point. Prob this week.

JoJo (Richmond)

Nick Foles or Eli Manning for the rest of the season? Is it close?

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

Can make a case either way. But I don't trust Philly QBs. If you think Foles is definitely starting the rest of the way, go for it. But why would you think that? Think back to one week ago... the narrative CAN'T change every single week!

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

I use those tools for analysis, but occasionally find that a team has a ranking out of line with reality because of lack of opposition, yes. In this case I ranked Kaep top 10 regardless. Depends on your other options, as always.

Colin (Regina)

You said not to drop Colston, but would you drop him for Roddy White? He was just dropped in my league.

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

I'd prefer to own Colston than Roddy, personally.

Jake (FL)

What are the chances Fitzgerald gets back to being a top 10 receiver?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

With Palmer playing like, well, Palmer, probably not good. But I keep ranking him WR2.

Jack (Minnesnowta)

Matt Ryan or Pryor + Rice for the rest of the year. I already have lacy and charles and qb is wilson (2 QB league)

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

I'd rather have Pryor than Ryan, and that should answer the question regardless of Rice. And btw, I would cautiously buy low on Rice... should get a little better. He doesn't seem hurt.

Bruce (Dallas)

How long should I hold onto Ben Tate? Mendenhall, Donald Brown, and Greene are available. I already have Morris, Gore, and Stacy on my roster.

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

Tate is likely starting this week with Foster on the shelf. So... hold on to him!

Jeff (Dallas)

I'm the commissioner in a 10 team league and chose not to give owners the ability to veto trades. However, a case of collusion was brought to my attention with 2 owners borrowing players for a week. How can I prevent this and do you believe in league where owners can veto trades?

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

I really prefer leagues that cannot veto trades, so I applaud you. If you find collusion, you throw the owners out. In this case, in case they're pals or something, I'd restore the players to old teams or disallow the trade back. And I doubt they'll do it again!

The Best Philadelphia Sports Arguments (Loved it!)

I'm in a league with a Q/W/R/T flex position.. PPR. IF Cutler plays this week, do I start him or V Jax?

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

Wait, you're the one that read my book?!? Wow! Wait, we're not related, are we? Anyway, thanks, and I almost always play a QB over a WR in an open spot if possible.

Adam (Mississauga)

Is trading Nick Foles for Andre Brown too much or too less?

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

If you have another QB, it's really wise.

Paul (Rio de Janeiro)

Do you think your Eagles fandom/bias clouds your judgment on Foles? Even Lurie has indicated that he wants to see what the young guys at QB can do (i.e., not Vick). Don't be a typical Philadelphia fan!

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

I doubt it. I just want to remind people that changing opinions every single week on a player is not the proper way to evaluate. One good game, one awful game, one concussion, one great game... where does it end? I don't think Foles is bad. Never did. But in Green Bay is a lot different than in Oakland... when he scores 13 fantasy points what will the narrative be next week? And the Eagles keep saying they want Vick to start.

John (CA)

What's going on with Foster? There hasn't been a peep since the update on Sunday night.

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

Which is usually a negative thing...

Scott (Dallas)

Hey buddy, looking for some advice. I can get Stacy for Antonio Brown. Pull the trigger?

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

At this point looks fair...

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

And it looks like the earlier question Cutler or Vincent Jackson was about Cutler or Matt Ryan... if Cutler plays, I do play him over Matt "There's another interception" Ryan.

Rick (Philly)

Does Sproles' availability affect Lance Moore's value? What about if Colston sits again too?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Sure, it all affects targets. I doubt Sproles plays this week. Plus, kinda disappointing season. I'd make sure Moore is owned in all leagues ...

Edmund (Cashton, WI)

Thoughts on Case Keenum moving forward? I'd like to add him as a fill-in for Romo week 11 (Houston plays Oakland at home).

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

Planning ahead is wise. Good for you! And yes, I am on board with Case...

Brian (NY)

How long is McFadden expected to be out? Thoughts on Jennings/Reece?

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

The Raiders have no idea. With this guy, they never have. Nobody does. I'd add Jennings first. Ran strong against Philly, though the game was out of hand.

GM (Miami)

Hi, would you make this deal: trade away Kaep and R. Matthews for Brady?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

Nope. I'd rather have Kaep than Brady. But if you disagree, go for it. Mathews DOES matter though... People are way too reactive. They loved him after the good games. Can't hate so much after the disappointing ones. I'd not make this deal.

Chad (Macon)

In a Dynasty League, is Andre Ellington a top 10 RB?

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

I don't think he is, but it's possible he'll continue to emerge. Let's no go overboard here. Not a large fellow...

Mike (KY)

Handcuffs... I know. I have Morris and Helu. I also have Joique Bell. I feel Bush is more likely to miss time than Morris but Helu is the handcuff for my RB. Do I drop Bell or Helu?

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

I don't think either is a critical own at this point. Helu had one great game. Morris is a top-10 RB and there's no reason to expect injury. And Bush is fine. Bell has done nothing for awhile. If I had to choose, it's Bell over Helu. But dump both for a potential starter. Is Mike James out there? Andre Brown?

Luke (NYC)

Start Heath Miller over Lance Moore this week, assuming Colston is back, but Sproles is out (0.5PPR)?

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

No, I would start Moore over Miller regardless.

Mark (Nashville)

Am I getting too cute playing the matchups and starting Shonn Green over Gio?

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

Yeah, kinda.

Isaac (SC)

Rather own Ellington or Tate in PPR league ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

Ellington for sure. Unless Foster is suddenly out for the season.

Peter (Pumpkin Eater, PA)

Ryan Matthews has had a few good games, but does his inconsistency concern you? I mean, he's RB2 on his own team.

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

I'm not a big fan, but I just don't like when people forget the good stuff to provide a narrative. The good and bad has to factor in. It's possible Mathews runs for 100 yards this week. Or 30. That's why he's not in the top-20 for me this week. But you don't drop after one game... yeah, I'd like consistency from all!

Mark (Florida)

Gio should be getting more touches, but it doesnt seem to be how the Bengals want things to go. Would you flex him over Boldin and Steve Smith this weekend even though he is up against the Ravens?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

Yes, I would flex Gio there. And we've been saying the same stuff about the Bengals - and will about the Cardinals - all year.

Miles (San Lorenzo)

Marvin Jones droppable if he is your 5th WR (and you only start 3)

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

Wow. Look how fast the narrative on this guy changed! See what I mean! From 4 TDs to a few fantasy points and voila! Yeah, he was never a MUST add, but it depends on your other options. Have depth just in case.

Brian (PHILLY)

I'm 6-3 but my QBs are Rodgers and Cutler. Think it makes sense to trade Rodgers for Romo? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

Yeah, it probably does. Painful as it might seem.

Jim (Houston)

Is James Jones an upgrade over either Jeffery or Shorts at WR3?

Eric Karabell
  (11:50 AM)

I don't think so. Wouldn't have been even with Rodgers.

BB (WI)

Tough spot, need to start Ray Rice, Lamar Miller, or Andre Brown. Your thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

Start a hockey league. It's not too late... I'd start Miller there.

Dylan (Scranton, PA)

I'm in the top 92% in scoring, but I'm 3-6, really bad luck. Can we get a change in the standard league playoff formatting allowing the top scoring(non playoff) team in?? I think it would be great.

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

We can't change that... but make your league custom and have the last playoff team be the highest scoring one from the also-rans record wise. I saw a league like that recently and love the idea! Because too much of this is luck. In baseball, the best teams make the fantasy playoffs... I'm not top-10 in scoring in a 20-teamer right now and will prob miss the playoffs. Can't control what the schedule bears!

Ken (VA)

Think Burleson plays this week? If so, is he worth a start? I have Lance Moore as my second WR right now...

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

Use Moore. And it's not like Burleson, who is unlikely to play, was all that great.

Jeff (NC)

EK. Just got back from a meeting sped to make your chat. Dynasty PPR: Russell Wilson for Ertz, Stacy, and Julius Thomas. What side do you want?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Can't answer it without knowing more. Do you have another QB? I like Wilson long-term. I like Stacy, too. If I have a top QB in place, I'd do it.

B-Rad (OU - Athens OH)

Do you think Gio will be stuck sharing backfields his whole career?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

No, I don't see that. But he is a rookie, after all.

Eric (Boston)

Expectations for Andre Brown this week?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Upside for big numbers, like yards and TDs. Downside is he's a third-down guy and they don't get goal line carries. He could be top 10 or totally irrelevant. In general it's best to not rely on those options.

Jesse (WA)

With Blackmon out, do you think Mike Brown can produce some somewhat consistent points? I have high hopes...

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

I think Shorts, who already gets tons of targets, gets more. Brown is barely ownable.

Will (NYC)

You seem to be okay with Andre Brown coming back, but not Vereen? Why? At least NE line is blocking. Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Pats have Ridley. 4 straight good games. Giants have Peyton Hillis. Big difference!

Jordan (NJ)

So if Roddy White practices in full all week, he won't make your top 40 WRs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

He would, but when's the last time he played? You would trust a guy like that in Week 10?

Kenny G (Chicago)

Hey EK! Appreciate the help! I give L. Bell, Jennings, and Vincent Jackson for Jordy and Stacy, who wins?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

You're giving up a bit too much there, in my opinion.

Big Mike (Jersey)

Ridley and Vereen do different things - kinda like Mathews and Woodhead, but much better. I think you underrate Vereen.

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

I'm readily available that they can work together. The point is Brown could get 15 carries. Vereen is not likely to with Ridley playing so well. Ridley is not going to simply go away. And Vereen is more receiver than runner generally. Everyone is just looking at his Week 1 game... look at last year.

Ben (Charlotte)

glad i didn't sell out of all my Philly skill positions, based on your Foles hate. he won't throw for 7 TDs a game obviously, but why should we doubt guys like DJax or McCoy ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

I hardly hate the Eagles, or any team. Just look at McCoy's rushing numbers and fantasy totals the past 7 weeks and tell me he's a top-5 guy. That's all. Let the numbers do the talking...

Buzzer Beater!!! (Louisburg)

ROS, Harvin or Marvin Jones? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Marvin. Which says a lot.

Chad (Macon)

Ellington or Gio in a dynasty league?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Giovani.

Rob (GA)

Eric, i just traded Mathews for Cruz...did I win?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Sure!

Eric Karabell
  (12:01 PM)

OK, it's apparent our time is up for this week! Thanks so much to everyone for sending thousands of questions and engaging in discussion. We couldn't do this without you and we definitely appreciate it! Have a great day and best of luck the rest of the season!
