Who will be the Closer for the Yankees in 2014?
My bet would be David Robertson. The Yankees have talked with the agent for Joe Nathan and they will keep the conversation going in the closer market, but I think that is a way they could allocate funds elsewhere.
Is their still any chance Hal says screw the 189 million? Especially if arods contract still counts
There is a chance, but I doubt. The Yankees will still be able to lure top free agents this offseason even with the $189M goal. Remember they have around $85-$90M coming off the books
hello andrew how are u yankees have been quiet thus far, had a comment and maybe you can shed some light....im thinking yankee management is either very undecided on moves or they are really not in a good position as far as being a trade partner and so forth...thank u
No, they are very active right now. Cashman hinted that they have some free agents in. A source wouldn't go as far as confirming that to me, but the sense I get is that they probably have had Brian McCann or others in to see what it would be like as a Yankee.Usually, stuff doesn't happen until after Thanksgiving and through the Winter Meetings.
When cano signs with Texas. What the heck are the yanks going to do?
I think the Yankees are the favorites. They want him. He wants to be in the Bronx. That said, if he did sign with Texas, I think the Yanks would be fine spending the money elsewhere. You could argue that $180M-$200M could be better spent on a few free agents than just one.
If yankees sign Beltran or choo does cash trade ichiro? Does he have any trade value?
I think if they sign a big time FA OF -- and Beltran is their No. 1 choice, I believe -- then they could try to deal Ichiro. He will net barely anything and the Yanks may have to eat some of his salary to make it happen. Vernon Wells also could be a goner if the Yanks sign an OF
This A-Rod saga is pathetic. Him and his lawyers have known all along that Selig wasn't going to testify, but at the 11th hour it becomes too much for him to handle? That's a calculated last-ditch effort, and it's going to fail miserably
Fair enough. I think the media and PR stuff is a lot of fun, but the only thing that will matter is what the arbitrator rules
If the Arbitrator rules a suspension of any kind, how can A-Rod's "team" take it to court for an injunction when he, as a Union member, is part of MLB's rules? Would he be able to play while he is supposed to be suspended for any length of time?
From lawyers I've spoken to, getting an injunction after the arbitration is very difficult, perhaps impossible
Hi Andrew I prefer the Yankees not to over spend in the catcher position (McCann) instead going for Shin-Soo Choo and Granderson with Ichiro as backup in all 3 outfield positions, Eric Chavez for insurance at 1B and 3B Thank you
That's a lot of OF. I think Choo might get more than McCann.
Don't the Yankees have to move forward as if they aren't going to have A-Rod next year?
Budget wise, they are keeping him in the budget. On the field, yes, because even if he plays he always gets hurt every year now.
Fill in the blanks: Robinson Cano will get a __ year deal worth $___Million from the _______.
I love Mad Libs.Fill in the blanks: Robinson Cano will get a _8_ year deal worth $_184__Million from the ____Yankees___.
Will the hold up of Arod's case and the $33 million stop the Yankees from trying to sign guys like McGann or Beltran? And, do you think the Rangers are going after Cano now that Kinsler is in Detroit?
No, they have the budget to go after McCann & Beltran even if they have to count A-Rod's money for 2014. I think Texas could very well be the biggest competition for Cano.
what happened to the farm system? how was every prospect seemingly overrated? who's getting fired for this?
Good question. The farm system is not helping the Yankees. They have no one to give major assistance for next year.Hal is not George. No one is getting fired yet.
Seeing as how attendance was down, does it behoove the Steinbrenners to forget the tax threshold? What is greater: the luxury tax avoidance or loss of fans/fan dollars?
I think if they can sign Cano, McCann, Beltran and Tanaka, the fan base would be excited. They maybe be able to do that and stay under $189M
If arod is not suspended or suspended for 50 games would he really be the yankees third basemen? Wouldn't that be so awkward? Why not release him and eat his money
They owe him nearly $90M, that is a lot of money to eat. Eventually, it very well will happen, but not yet.
Hello Andrew, do you believe the Yanks will ever go back to the model where they develop core players in the minors? Seems the approach over the last 10+ years has not been successful and has been very costly - lots of money spent on players (pitchers) that never performed anywhere near the value of what they were paid - seems you need half of the starters and half of the roster as homegrown to keep a sustainable balance - do they trade too many prospects or are their scouts just not that good
I think they are trying to develop players in the minors. They just arent' doing it well.
If the Yanks fail to make the playoffs this year do you think Cash gets fired? If I'm Hal, my attitude would be, I gave you 3 offseasons to get ready for $189m, instead of spending smart and trying to find value, you got a bunch of old guys on 1-2 year contracts and ran up the payroll ahead of it--and to top it off none of the minor leaguers worked out. It's time to go.
Hal hasn't shown that he fires people. He is not his dad. However, I do think if they have a really bad year Cashman could be in trouble.Girardi just signed a four-year deal for big money so he isn't going anywhere. Cashman is in the final year of his deal.
Are the Yankees pursuing Drew or Peralta? How about Nathan or Choo? Any names you are hearing about?
Yes. Yes. Yes. And Yes.The shortstops are in their top seven or eight of guys they are pursuing. They believe Choo will be on the board for them in January if other things don't work out.Their top target is McCann. He is the guy they really want.
With no state income tax in TX, what would the Rangers have to offer Cano to make the "value" of his contract the $310 million he has been asking?
He is not getting $310M anywhere, I don't believe.Your point is well taken on no state tax, I don't know how much less Texas can offer and still be more than the Yankees
Who is the first big name the Yankees will sign or re-sign?
If I knew, I'd report, but my best guess would be either McCann or Beltran. If you count their own guys, I'll throw in Kuroda.
It's an opening move, granted, but are the Mets trying to corner the market on non-hitting 4th outfielders? At some point, even the Wilpons must realize that drawing to an inside straight isn't gonna win the pot.
I think Mets' fans should protest if they don't spend money. They don't need to sign Cano, but they need to invest in a big market team that is supposed to win.
Even if the Yankees sign Cano, McCann, Beltran, and Choo, everybody seems to be forgetting that they need pitching desperately. They may not even be allowed to post for Tanaka and they have three holes to fill. Is the plan to try to win games 10-9 all year?
Great point. They have so many holes. They know pitching is the most important.Ideally, they would like their rotation to be CC, Kuroda, Tanaka, Nova and the young guys (Pineda, etc) fighting it out for the fifth spot in the spring.
Is there a specific date that the Yankees have to be under 189 million or is it for the entire 2014 season?
So do you think the yanks are going to plan on Arods 30mil? If so does this mean no chance of Peralta?
There is a chance. I just wonder why he or Drew would want to deal with Jeter and A-Rod possibly blocking their playing. And in this market, with so many holes, is that the place you want to overspend if you are the Yankees?
do you think cashman has a surprise trade ?
I usually do, but unless he trades Robertson or Gardner, he doesn't have much to deal.
Any chance Jose Canseco can pick up A-Fraud, and throw him in the backseat with his goats so we can all move on from this soap opera?
They used to hangout together in Miami when Rod was a teenager.
Didn't Robertson start out as the closer when Mariano went down and didn't do all that well. That's when Soriano stepped in. It's a lot like when Ron davis stepped in after Gossage left....good setup man, losy closer. It's a different mindset.
Mariano blew like three of his first five save chances. Something like that.So you might be right about Robertson, but I'd give him a little more of a shot.
Can the Yankees expect anything out of Teixeira or Sabathia next year (or for the remainder of their contracts for that matter)?
Well, yeah. Those two guys being somewhat to close to what they have been is somewhat realistic and absolutely necessary for the Yanks' success
I'm surprised there's any talk going on about Choo or Beltran or Ellsbury. They have Soriano, Ichiro, Gardner, and Wells for another year, and by 2015 won't their younger guys be ready? Or no?
I agree. That's why they like Beltran the best. If they strikeout on Cano, McCaan and Beltran, then they probably will want a big ticket item and Ellsbury and Choo will likely still be out there.
Do you think the Rangers have any chance of landing McCann AND Cano?
Yes, I do. They have loads of money. I think McCann is more likely than Cano, but both are possible
Andrew who wins the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes, Redsox or Yankees?
I would say Yanks, but it might be Texas.Really, when all the teams have money and desire, it is just guesswork.
What could the Rangers possibly gain from dealing Profar? To me, it makes no sense to deal him unless they've already got Cano in the bag.
Andrew I believe the Red Sox will get Beltran and McCann...Thanks
So...where are the SP coming from? I like Garza because of his AL East experience, despite his average record.
I guess Garza is possible. The Yanks don't like the staring FA market, but they may be forced to dip their toe in it
Hi Andrew, I think the Redsox will resign Ellsbury.. what do you think?
Since Rodriguez came out and finally denied his recent PED use on the radio, it makes me a little nervous that the MLB doesn't have enough substantial evidence on him; does this signify a change in fortune for either side? Was it just a brainless front? Do you take anything from it? By the way, I find it hard to believe there was so much love for Rod from the people in NYC yesterday.
Only what Freddy Horowitz thinks matters and no one knows what he thinks.A-Rod has a tendency to exaggerate.
if they sign McCann do you think gary sanchez gets traded?what return cud he get us?
Possible, but I don't know if one will lead to the other
Whats your best case scenario lineup for 2014
Brett Gardner, CFDerek Jeter, SSRobinson Cano, 2BCarlos Beltran, RFBrian McCann, CMark Teixeira, 1BAlfonso Soriano, LFRaul Ibanez, DHJohnny Peralta, 3BThat was off the cuff so don't hold me to it, but that could be a pretty good lineup. I think there is some realism to it. We will end on that note. Sorry to those whose questions I couldn't answer. Thanks to all for joining.Andrew
