Keep sending questions, I'll get started in a minute
Ok, let's get started
In his tenure at Texas, Mack Brown has garnered a national championship, the 09 Big XII title, another 4 Big XII South titles, 15 bowl appearances, and this year came within a game of winning the Big XII outright. If UT fires/retires him, doesn't that just repeat the blunder Texas made when they fired Fred Akers and entered the Dark Ages for a decade?
The potential for that to happen is there, no question. I'd agree sometimes you don't realize how good you have it until things change. It all depends on who would be the replacement hire
OK, so I gave FSU and Auburn a chance at the NC, I gave millions of fans what they wanted and kept 'Bama out of the NC, the Buckeyes were on the naughty list so I gave them coal from Michigan State, I gave a couple schools their first-ever BCS bowls. What's left on the list?
My million dollar check. I haven't got that yet, but you have until the 25th, Coach Claus, so make it happen.
If Mack Brown leaves do i stay in waco or go to austin...
As of right now, I'd say you'll stay in Waco. But plenty of people will be in hot pursuit
Texas has to have something already going on behind closed doors to be forcing Mack Brown out like this. What/Who do you think it is? They better have a viable replacement if they are going to force the "face" of texas longhorn football out like it seems that they are doing now.
A lot of rumors with regards to Saban. It's going to be fun to watch it play out. Until it's officially not him, I have a hard time saying I don't think he's the guy
Seems to be a lot of articles already about Bob Stoops' comments on the SEC. I've also read that Stoops and Saben are actually pretty good friends. So, is this a story line the media is going to try to focus on just for pure fodder, or is this really something that bothered Saben?
I doubt it bothered Saban all that much. He has plenty on his plate. I think it rubs some other people the wrong way though
Word thru the grapevine is that OL Coach Klenakis is going to be the next OC for Iowa State. Would this be the smart choice, or does ISU need to look on the outside for coaches? (Gotta try to get at least one question in for the Cyclones, chat's always too heavy on the OU/Texas/Baylor)
I think that would be a good choice. It would keep a certain amount of stability but bring in some fresh blood as well.
Brandon, let us imagine Saban rejects UT. Is Gundy the next "Man" up as Steve Peterson scrambles to find a suitable replacement?
That's interesting but, no, I don't think he's the next man up. He'd be a good choice though
who would be in your 4 team playoff this year if it were in effect?
I like FSU, Auburn, Stanford and Michigan St. I think that would be a solid playoff
bedlam obviously shuffled the BCS slots a bit, but do you think baylor would have a better chance against alabama than OU?
Probably. The Baylor Bears are the Big 12 champions for a reason.
What are your thoughts on the match up with Bama? It's going to be a tough match up for OU but what do they need to do to come out with a win? Thanks Brandon
They will have to play well and limit mistakes. I think Alabama will win but I think OU has a better shot than some people are giving them. Why? Because this team has no business being 10-2, yet they are. OU seems to just find a way this season.
How surprised are you that OU left Stillwater with a victory?
I was very surprised. Particularly with the way they did it, having the offense cruise down the field at the end. Impressive win for the Sooners
Any break-up is at the moment painful. But I do believe eventually Mack Brown will be looked upon as the modern day Darryl Royal at Texas. For now, if Texas can't get Saban - who else can fill Mack's big shoes?
I'm thinking Saban until it's not him. But if they don't land him, UT should take its time and explore a bunch of different options because Texas is the best coaching job in the country. A lot of people may be interested that nobody expects.
Baylor had 10 players on the All Big-12 First Team. The next highest was K-State at 5 players. 4 or 5 of those Baylor players are more than likely staying for next year. Do you think this trend could continue?
Baylor players on the All-Big 12 squad? Yes, absolutely, I'd be surprised if it didn't continue.
James Sims had 15 more rushing yards than Charles Sims, but Charles had 4 more TD's and a lot more receiving production. How in the world did James get first-team all Big 12 over Charles?
Charles was first team All-Big 12, not James
Hey Brandon, If Mack Brown is out and Nick Saban does go to Texas, do you think there's any chance Bob Stoops goes to Alabama?
your thoughts on bedlam?
Bedlam was amazing. One of the best games I've ever seen and the way OU offense stepped up when the Sooners needed it, was pretty awesome. One of my favorite things about sports is watching people rise to the occasion. And Blake Bell did that.
Yo, the SEC can't play defense, so we got a shot in the Sugar Bowl?
Well Bob, I'm not going to pick you to win but I think you have a shot. I don't understand why people think you don't to be honest. Alabama is great but they aren't unbeatable.
Hey Brandon, I know we still have a long way to go in recruiting season for 2014 but OU is still lagging behind and have just lost several of our top prospects to other schools. Do you think we can still finish in the top 15 in recruiting? If so, who do you see us getting that is still out there?
I doubt it, it would take a terrific finish from the Sooners.
The Mountaineers play a pretty tough schedule next year. What record does Dana Holgorsen have to get to keep his job? If we go bowling, I think he stays. Even we if we go 5-7 and are competitive against the top schools, I think he still might get another year. Your thoughts?
I think WVU needs to make a bowl game next season, so 6-6. I like the young players on the roster but they really need a quarterback. I do think Holgorsen is a good guy for the job though, he understands what it takes to win, particularly in the Big 12. I wouldn't be in a hurry to cast him aside if I'm WVU
Mr. Chatmon, What does OU have to do in order to beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl? Can OU's rookie LBs stop the run game of Alabama?
They will have to operate efficiently on offense and force some turnovers
I do feel it is time for Mack Brown to go, but is Texas kind of treating him like crap?
They probably could be handling things differently, I'd agree
Bran,I lived in Dallas for a three years due to a corporate transfer. I loved it there. My question is this. How does Baylor's offense stack up to a defense that's legitimate?
They can score on anyone
What team projects the best for next year's Big XII season? I'm biased but K-State should compete.
Definitely think K-State should be up there, Baylor as well
Should I transfer out if tech? Why or why not?
No Baker. Why should you? Based on what?
Oklahoma State's chances in the Cotton Bowl?
I like OSU's chances, don't expect them to be run off the field or anything like that. I don't know who I will pick in that game but I think it will be a great game, one of the most entertaining this bowl season.
When the Big 12 has a high scoring game, there is no defense. When the SEC has a high scoring games, then it is just a great football game with great offenses. What gives?
I've wondered the same thing. Though I don't really hear people trying to play the "SEC defense is second to none" card too much anymore
Any chance we would be lucky enough to have Texas hire Lane Kiffin as head coach if Mack goes? Maybe he could hire his dad to run the defense. As a Dallas Cowboy fan, I'd be fine with that.
Would be a terrific hire!!! Can't imagine a better choice.
What the hell is a Big XII South title? Is Austin-ish for real? Two conference championships in 16 years, the first coach at Texas to lose four games in four consecutive seasons, four of the eight largest blow outs to OU in history... with all of the resources and talent in Texas, this is simply inexcusable. Brown must go. Response?
I can see why fans would like to see a change but, at the same time, I've seen too many changes turn into a disaster. I don't think it's quite as clear cut as you do, HookEmDC.
Do you remember at the beginning of the season when all 623 TCU fans were saying that Casey Pachall was going to tear up the Big 12? Did his injury really hold him up or is was he just overrated?
all 623? Not 624 or 632?... to answer your question, I think it was a combination of both. He may have been a tad overrated but his injury played a major role in TCU's season because it looked like Trevone Boykin was TCU's most explosive receiver when Pachall returned. And Boykin can't throw to himself, so...
Is Saban teasing/playing the Tide and Longhorn fans by not signing the contract extension Alabama has offered him?
teasing? I call it smart. Keeping his options open. As he should.
Why do people that are fans of schools from the SEC always act like their team is the SEC? Does that question make sense?
Yes it does, and I don't know. Because they take so much pride in their football in the south is my assumption
Gaze into your crystal ball and tell was what the Big 12 record will be for the bowl games.
Good question, I'll say 3-3 but could easily be 1-5 in my opinion. Baylor is my lone lock
Bruce Feldman is reporting Jim Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin are in the mix for the Texas job. What say you?
There is no name that would surprise me. As I said, I think Texas is the best CFB job in the nation.
Obviously I would have rather had my Crimson Tide playing in Pasadena, that being said Okie does provide an exciting matchup. For a couple years now we have heard Coach Stoops make rather bizzare comments directed towards the SEC and this is what gives the game an extra bit of fire. Don't gt me wrong, we have a great deal of respect for OU but it will be nice to get the chance to defend ourselves against said comments. Anyhow, I wanted to know if this was a focal point or even an afterthoght in the mind of OU and the sooner nation?
It's definitely a focal point of the fans. I think the fans want OU to show they could hang in the SEC but I don't know that the players/coaches spend a lot of time on it. They have their hands full with trying to find a way to beat Bama.
I hate moral victories, but if OU gives Bama a tough game. Does that help OU's national image and recruiting? I'm sure everyone thinks OU will get beating by 20, and it could happen.
I think so. It might show people that OU might be a team to keep an eye on in the next few seasons. A lot of young talent in Norman right now.
If Tech can finally maintain some stability in the defensive coaching staff, how much can the defense improve with the returning players and incoming recruits?
I think you hit the nail on the head with the stability comment. I think that is the key. With that stability I think the Red Raiders will be able to recruit to their defensive system and start seeing better success on that side of the ball.
I have a hard time thinking Saban would leave what he has going at Bama to try and recreate it at Texas. He has traditionally only left for what would probably be a job upgrade, but I don't see Texas being a huge upgrade from Bama. As far as money goes, Bama is one of only a few programs that could compete with a Texas offer. Why do you think he would leave then?
Quite simply because he doesn't tend to just stay at one place. I'd agree that Alabama is an elite job also.
What did the Bedlam loss to OU do to the Heart and Mind of Gundy and his OSU team? And how do the Pokes respond in their Bowl Game?
It had to hurt. The Sooners came into their house and took away their dreams. Ouch. That said I think OSU will respond well and play well against Mizzou. And they better or they risk the Tigers running them off the field.
What chances do you give Snyder and the Wildcats against Michigan?
I think K-State will win. They ended the season playing better football and will have more confidence in my opinion.
What kind of resume do you think Patterson is looking for?
You interested Gary? If so, I'm going to throw my name in the bucket also. Let's do it!
Is it common for a player to be named to the All Big-12 First Team twice for the same team? Or is Tyler Lockett just a beast?
It's not something you see every day but I think some coaches slotted Lockett in at KR/PR because they weren't sure he would make it at WR and know he's 1st team worthy
Did I get robbed of an interception that would have clinched the game?
You probably did. But all you had to do was hang onto the ball, right Justin? When you didn't, you opened the door for that call to be made.
The bowl line up for the Big XII looks pretty tough. Which teams do you see being able to win and realistically what kind of record would the Big XII need to look respectable? Thanks Brandon
I think Baylor, Oklahoma State and Kansas State have the best chances to win. I'll probably pick the Big 12 to finish 3-3, that would be respectable to me considering they should be underdogs in the majority of the matchups
As a K-State I'm rather bummed we didn't get to play Nebraska. How much more exciting would that have been? Yes Michigan still is an exciting matchup but STILL Nebraska would have been so thrilling for both sides. Used to be a rather big rivalry when Snyder starting beating them a few times.
I was disappointed as well. I wanted to see K-State against Nebraska, they've had some good battles.
Thanks for your great work Brandon. I always thought Trey Millard was one of the best football players in the game. I wish he had been in a position (literally and figuratively) to receive more recognition for his game. All-American caliber in my mind if his position was actually fully recognized. I'm bummed his OU career ended the way it did. Thoughts?
I would agree. He's overshadowed because he doesn't put up great numbers but I think he will be an NFL pro bowler in the future.
If you were Stoops, who're you playing as QB for the Sugar Bowl? Thanks!
Trevor Knight is the future in my opinion.
If you were Texas, who would be your top 3 choices? Let's assume Saban isn't going to come for this hypothetical...
If I was Texas I go after Tomlin, Briles or Shaw (after Saban). That's what I would do, probably Shaw first.
What will happen first? The Big 12 adds a couple teams, and sets up two conferences(again) or they just dissolve?
Adds two teams. But not for a long, long time.
'Sup Brandon. Any ideas on how to stop these ASU receivers in the bowl game? Those back shoulder throws are lethal. Any other advice on winning the Holiday Bowl would be helpful as well.
Sup Kliff? How is the recruiting trail treating you? I would go for it all, just bring pressure all the time otherwise it could be a long game. Why not go out guns blazing? You are a Red Raider after all
Over/Under on how many turnovers Tech will commit to a opportunistic ASU defense.
Why is Oklahoma having such a harder time recruiting now? It is playing in a lesser conference now, is it Texas A&M recruiting better now than it used to and other SEC schools recruiting Texas better, or is it just poor recruiting efforts by coaches. This is OU, recruiting should not be that difficult.
Recruiting has gotten harder and OU needs to adjust its approach on some things.
were u surprised J. Gray didnt get any BIG 12 honors even though he got hurt? What do you see from Gray next season?
A little bit. I expect him to be All-Big 12 if he returns to form. He's one of the Big 12's top running backs, without a doubt.
Brandon, yes we are the Big XII Champs and we have done more this year than any other Baylor team in history. Since I am signed for the next 10 years and have no plans on leaving, do you think that Baylor will become a place where more than a couple of top recruits are going to come to on a regular basis? We do fantastic with 3 star recruits, imagine how we could do by adding 2 or 3 4 and 5 star recruits.
Baylor is a "it" team right now, so yes, I think you'll land your share of elite guys.
few more questions.... Thanks for the questions, BTW, a ton of great ones today.
Everyone is saying that Oregon should have been selected instead of Oklahoma so who would win between Oregon and Oklahoma? Oregon's speed would have to be to much IMO.
I think Oregon would overwhelm the Sooners.
So many media members have twisted my words on the SEC. Why not state the fact that I was talking about the bottom half of the SEC and that I have much respect for the conference, there is just a lot of double standards towards the SEC as compared to other major conferences.
I think you cleared that up on Sunday. Didn't you?
Oklahoma State Football coaches, players, and fans cannot shake the psychological curse of playing OU and beating them in a close game with real national implications on the line. Speaks volumes to the differences in their University cultures. OU will always be better, when it counts. OSU will always be little brother when it is on the line. What are your thoughts?
There's a hole in your argument. (hint: it occurred in 2011)
last question, let me find a great one
If this year was a 4 team playoff, and you were the selection committee, who are the 4 teams to make it? And who comes out the champion?
I previously said FSU, MSU, Auburn, Stanford. I think FSU beats Auburn in the title game after both teams advance.
Thanks everyone, have a great day!
