Keep sending in questions, I'll get started in a minute
Ok, let's get started
What College Football Bowl Game will you be Attending this season?
I will be at the Cotton Bowl, should be a great game.
In general, I am not a fan of anything Missouri. But, why are we not hearing about Gary Pinkel in the Texas HC search. He wins big or nearly big at a university with less significantly less resources than Texas, he recruits well in Texas, he knows the Big 12, I do not recall any scandals/issues, and he is reasonable on TV/with the press. Just asking.
It's a good question John. He would be a good candidate but I think it's possible the Longhorns are looking for a bigger splash. But, I'd agree he would be a pretty solid choice
Art Briles is doing an awesome job of getting elite talent to Waco. However, how much would recruiting improve if he wore Capri Pants and flipped his visor backwards a la Kliff Kingsbury?
Does the rest of the Big 12 really want to know the answer to that question? I don't think so...
No matter how people try to spin it, Sonny Cumbie kicking Texas Tech to the curb in favor of TCU, makes the red raiders look real bad.
I disagree Jay, and here's why. At TCU, he is working for a head coach with a defensive background who runs that side of the ball. At Tech, he's working for a head coach with an offensive background who runs that side of the ball. So now Cumbie probably in a situation with more freedom and the ability to get more involved with play calling, etc... would he have the same opportunity at Tech?
Which Big 12 teams do you see with the highest pre-season rankings and the greatest outlook for the 2014 season?
Baylor and Oklahoma come to mind immediately with Oklahoma State and Texas also in the mix. But the Bears, to me, should be the favorite to win again based off Bryce Petty returning.
Have any of the younger guys at OU stepped up and looked good in practice?
Keep an eye on K.J. Young, Charles Walker and Jordan Smallwood in the future.
As a die hard Sooners fan I am glad that we snuck into a BCS bowl but not happy it is against Alabama. Do we have enough firepower on both sides of the ball to keep the game interesting or will it be over by half time? Also if Trevor Knight is healthy does he get the start over Bell? Which one is going to give Alabama more problems?
I think the Sooners will give Alabama a better game than most people expect, OU should start Knight, I think he's better suited for success against Bama but I would use both, try to mimic what worked against OSU.
Im curious as to how people thing the sooners will be next year. They have a really young team. They have managed 10 wins and turned out to be alright this year despite what people thought. Do you see them being much more improved next year and possibly making a National Title run?
If OU finds its quarterback and that guy plays at a high level, there's nothing the Sooners cannot accomplish in 2014. There's a lot of young talent in Norman.
ive read Gruden would be interested in a shot at UT. what are the odds he fits Pattersons criteria?
There has been so many names thrown around in Austin, it's been interesting. You would have thought the Longhorns would have been better prepared than this to be honest. I think what I've learned in the past two weeks is, maybe, just maybe, Mack Brown isn't the problem.
Saban staying at Alabama. Lane Kiffin brainstorming with Saban on offense wrinkles. The mighty Alabama Crimson Tide mad as hell for not getting into the Natty. 14 point favorites over OU. Why should my Sooners even get off the bus?
Ready to give up on them already? On Dec. 18?
Hi Brandon, I see Mike Gundy on the list for the Texas job. I wonder if he does want to leave, would the SEC be a better fit for him? Does he want to leave his alma mater for one of its biggest rivals? If I were him i'd wait for Spurrier to leave SC, Miles to leave LSU, or Malzahn to leave Auburn. Agree?
No. None of those jobs are better than Texas. And I don't know that the SEC is a better fit for him either
Why are TCU fans excusing Patterson's stupid tirade against Briles? Don't they know that this only makes them look more petty and insecure.
Supporting their coach to the end I suppose. I'll say this, nobody is perfect and I think the timing was off to make those comments but there's no doubt in my mind there is a reason Patterson said and did what he did that day. And I don't have a major issue with it.
Do you consider Ok St. a top tier HC job?
Depends on what you mean by top tier... but OSU has the pieces in place to compete for conference and national titles, so it's a lot better than a lot of jobs out there.
Your name is Chatmon AND you're holding a chat? Mind. Blown.
Yes. An amazing turn of events right? I cannot confirm that Trotter is trotting right now however.
what school is Steven Parker leaning to ?
my gut says he remains in state but we shall see.
Hey Brandon, what you think of the job Iowa State has done so far in recruiting? Looks like Coach Rhoads is going heavy on Juco guys, for sure on defense.
I think that's the right move and from what I've seen I think the Cyclones have landed some potential impact guys but you never know until they are on campus. But the JUCO route was the right move IMO
Read a recent article on the facility wars in the Big 12. Is it accurate to say that OU needs to step it up quick in this area? Are we losing recruits due to it?
I think OU needs to keep up and they've done some great things including the new dorm but they must keep pushing to match what other schools do. I don't think that is a major reason they are losing recruits though
Getting back to Pinkel, if you are him, is it better to stay at Mizzou, possibly win and SEC or even a National Champ, and become the Bear Bryant of that school, or go to Texas and just be another guy?
Stay at Mizzou.
Who do you like in the Michigan/K St bowl game?
Kansas State. The Wildcats were among the Big 12's best at the end of the year.
Kansas State. The Wildcats were among the Big 12's best at the end of the year.
Who do you see stepping up to be the #2 receiver alongside Sterling Shephard next year?
too early to say, some quality candidates though including Durron Neal and K.J. Young
How much improvement should we expect out of Texas Tech's defense next year seeing as how they finally have consistency in defensive coaching?
I expect them to be much improved but not quite among the Big 12's top 3 or 4 defenses next year. But the consistency is a big key
With the extension the Briles just inked, should Baylor folks be less worried about the job opening in Austin? Would the buyout slow UT if they really wanted him?
I don't know that the extension is a reason to feel more secure about him staying. BU should be making sure he's happy and content more than anything else because people will keep coming after him no matter what
Brandon, what is your favorite type of Christmas dessert? I love them all.
What's up Charlie? How was recruiting? Anyway I enjoy apple crisp, cheesecake and pumpkin or pecan pie. Drop by if you're recruiting in the area
Looks like OU gets most of its defense back in 2014. Colvin is a big loss, but have to be somewhat excited about the outlook on D. Agree?
I would agree. OU should be even better on defense in 2014.
Thoughts on kstate next year? We return quite a lot from a 7 win team
As long as Bill Snyder returns, I have to keep an eye on Kansas State. The man is a genius who can get overlooked sometimes. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Wildcats in the Big 12 title mix next year.
Les Miles has never been fully accepted in Baton Rouge. Do you think he makes the jump back to the Big XII? He meets the Longhorns #1 criteria, beating Oklahoma.
To Texas? I'd be surprised if he made that jump.
Do you really think that TCU's offense will be improved next year? I like the two OC's they got but we still don't have a proven QB to make the air raid offense fly.
Did you see how bad it was? Not only did they struggle to move the ball, they turned it over. So, yes, I think it will be better. I also like the hire of Meacham, he'll have a good plan for how to get things going in the right direction and he did a great job at Houston this season. I expect it to be much improved, even though they'll have to search for a quarterback.
Could someone like Major Applewhite who is on staff or Scott Frost who is Oregon's OC be on the Texas Radar... Mack Brown wasnt a household name when he was hired from North Carolina?
It's possible but I doubt it. I think they want a proven guy who can also navigate through all the tunnels required to coach UT. Not ideal for a newcomer to the head coaching ranks IMO
Is Big Game Bob a 7-5 season away from being put firmly on the hot seat?
Um, unlikely. He just went 10-2 with a team that easily could have lost 4 or 5 games.
What Big XII bowl do you look forward to the most?
Really looking forward to the Cotton Bowl.
O.K, this is what I don't get about Oklahoma State. They want Oklahoma fans to treat their program with respect. They want to be treated like an equal, but the minute the lose they make up a bunch of silly excuses. Someone that truly sees themselves like an equal does not do this. What do you think?
I see the same "excuses" from every fan base after loses, I don't think it's an OSU trend.
With the coaching depth we see in the SEC and now even the Pac-12 with the addition of Peterson. Don't you think Texas needs to hire a big name from outside the conference, instead of poaching from within?
I think Texas needs to have a consensus of what, specifically, they are looking for then go from there. It doesn't seem like they know exactly what they want right now, so let's start there...
Great to hear Reese is cleared to play. What speed do you think he'll be at for the Fiesta Bowl? 80%? Full Speed?
I think he will be close to full speed, which is scary for any defense.
Is this the year the conference catches up to my Jayhawks?
Both Jayhawks coaches in one chat? Wow, I feel blessed, Happy Holidays to me! I think you should be worried about Marcus Smart and company, Bill, like really worried.
As an OSU fan, I am glad people keep bringing up that gundy is 1-8 vs OU with regards to the Texas HC position. Think of the recruits he had to mold into making his team the successful team it is now. Do you not think, his bad record wouldnt be better with texas recruits he could get?
He would be a good choice, he has a terrific understanding of how to run and maintain a program. But, as we've discussed, there's a bunch of quality candidates. That's why I keep saying UT needs to know what they want first, then go from there.
How many games does Holgy have to win to earn the right to coach at WVU in 2015?
I think WVU needs to make a bowl game, which should be doable.
Who do you expect to start at QB for Texas Tech? What in your opinion is the key to pulling off an upset win?
For some reason my gut says Brewer. They'll have to play extremely well on offense and win the turnover battle. But, frankly, I think how they enter the game will be the most important. Will they have confidence, will they expect to win? If so, how, based off their final stretch to the season. But if they find the confidence to think they can win, that will be half the battle.
What is a realistic record for my Horned Frogs in 2014? We have a pretty favorable schedule but obviously will be instituting a new offensive scheme.
I think they will be better but it's tough to answer that right now. I'll have a much better feel after the spring but they need someone to run the new offense and if they find someone who can do it well, they can be right in the mix for a Big 12 title also.
In case you haven't noticed, I think the Big 12 is going to be wide open again in 2014. It's been an overriding theme, right?
Thoughts on the Holiday Bowl matchup?
I think it will be tough, the Red Raiders are going to have to play extremely well and have a cornerback's type mentality heading into the game.
Come on, don't you think Patterson's comments on Briles were over the top regardless of the timing?
I'm saying I'm pretty sure I don't have all the information to judge. It clearly goes deeper than the surface.
Since you are most looking forward to it, who wins Mizzou or Okie St?
I think Oklahoma State wins a close one with a late turnover or something like that. It's definitely the game that I'm most uncertain about as I try to pick a winner
Why aren't people talking about Malzahn to UT?
Good question Billy, I don't know why. But they should be.
what will be the biggest hurdle for the next coach of Tex, and what price tag does Tex have to offer to get a big name coach?
(1) Navigating the things outside of football. (2) Whatever it takes if they find the right guy.
Will the Texas-Oregon game resemble the Alamo by the middle of the third quarter?
I wouldn't be surprised to watch Oregon run away from UT but if the Longhorns can get consistent pressure in the backfield, that changes everything.
There is no way in the world that tech's defense will improve next year. Sure they will have all their coaches returning on that side of the ball, but you fail to appreciate how much of an impact the lose of seniors : Kerry Hyder, Dartwan Bush, Dennell Wesley, Terrence Bullit, Will Smith, Terry Porter and Bruce Jones will have on that defense.
I think you're forgetting how bad it was to end the season.
How likely is it that Fisher or Malzahn makes the move to Texas?
It's possible. Leave no stone unturned as they say...
With the departure of Mack Brown at seasons end, what will happen to the 5 star recruits who were thinking of joining Longhorn nation?
Somehow I think UT's recruiting will be ok. It all depends on who is the guy
What does OU look like at tailback next year and in the coming years behind Ford and Ross?
How deep do they need to go? Perine is likely coming in and should be a solid option as well.
how do you think wvu will do next year ?
I think they make a bowl game. I like some of the young athletes on that roster and I think they got some valuable lessons in 2013.
Do you think OU will win a championshikp within the next 5 years?
That's a tough one. I'll say no because the odds are on my side. But if you're simply talking competing for a national title, I'd say absolutely. And possibly as early as next year.
IF you had the choice for the next HC at Texas, who is the #1 man on your list and what would you offer to get him there?
Art Briles would probably be my choice.
So is the secret to stopping the Big 12 offenses the 3-3-5 with pass rushing linebackers? Or is OU just loaded with talent?
Versatility is critical.
one last question... and thanks for all the great questions today BTW
Lots of coaching questions for obvious reasons: Rank the best Big 12 coaching jobs.
I'm going to give you a top 3 because I'd have to really think about it to list them all... so, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
Thanks everyone! Have a great holiday season!
