Hi AA one question Do you think florida state will beat auburn in Pasadena this year?
Heather and I will have our bowl predictions out next week but I have been on the record as saying I believe Florida State will win by double digits.
What College Football Bowl game will you be Attending at?
First stop for me is the Russell Athletic Bowl here in Orlando.
You and Heather have not ceased denigrating Duke's accomplishments all year. Had Virginia Tech or Miami compiled Duke's record, you would have been all over it with "the Hokanes are back and better than ever". Instead, it's been all "Duke is a nice little story but"... Get out ahead of the story for once- are you going to wait until "what will the mighty Blue Devils do now that Cutcliffe is set to retire?"
George, I completely disagree with your assertion. We both have said repeatedly that Duke deserved its spot in the ACC title game, and we both have written extensive stories AND done videos looking at how the Blue Devils have gotten it done. I hope you look back and check out all the positive stories we have written.
AA : I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a great New Year !! Mine will be wonderful if the Noles find a way to stop that Auburn running attack and win the National title... What are your thoughts on the Noles doing so with that great defence of theirs... Thank you! Eddie....
Thanks, Eddie, same to you. Given the way Auburn runs, I expect the Tigers to be able to have at least some success running the ball. The FSU strength is in the back end, in my opinion. But what I think will negate the Auburn rushing game is the Florida State offense. If the Noles go up by a sizable margin and Auburn has to pass, that is bad news for the Tigers.
Andrea what does Miami have to do to beat Louisville? Also with the Miami Defense being how its been in the 2nd half of the season is Mark D'Onfrio on the Hot Seat
I think the major matchup problem for Miami is the Louisville WRs/TEs. If Louisville can find a way to slow those guys down and get in Teddy Bridgewater's face, then they will have a shot. As for D'Onofrio being on the hot seat, Al Golden has stood by him and I don't see that changing.
Hi Andrea, what do you see as the keys for Louisville against Miami in the RAB? Can the Miami defense slow down UofL's offense? Thanks and Go Cards!
Reverse question! I think Louisville needs to win in the trenches. Miami has a very solid offensive line so Louisville has to do a good job there. If the Cards can get their run game going consistently, they will be hard to stop. Miami is turnover prone, so Louisville has to do a good job creating a few there.
Who is the ACC favorites in 2014?
Word is Teddy Bridgewater is seriously contemplating a return to Louisville for his senior year. What would you do, and where does that put the Cards going into next season?
I have no idea which way Teddy is leaning, let me say at the top. I think if you have an opportunity to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, you leave. Because guess who is most likely coming out next year? Jameis. With or without Teddy, Louisville will not unseat FSU atop the Atlantic.
Jimbo Fisher coached up new talent all season...after losing 11 starters to the NFL and six coaches....yet he wasn't even mentioned as a Coach of the Year candidate. What do you personally think of his coaching this season..and his improved play calling? ( Merry Christmas! )
Merry Christmas to you! I think Jimbo has done a terrific job coaching this team. If you recall the Take 2 HD and I did on ACC Coach of the Year, I took the Jimbo argument. I had one ACC coach that believed Jimbo deserved major consideration for taking his team and going undefeated. Jimbo has taken a lot of heat for his play calling but I think he really did an outstanding job this year. You can clearly tell he and JW have a chemistry that he did not quite have with his other QBs.
Outside of the BCS National Championship, what game are you looking forward to most? The Orange Bowl looks very intriguing.
I think Rose and Orange are great matchups. So is USC vs Fresno State and Louisville vs Miami in the non-BCS games.
I asked HD this earlier in the week, so thought I'd get your take. If you had a Heisman vote, would you have left Jameis off your ballot?
I do have a Heisman vote, and he was on my ballot.
I know he won, as he should. But were you surprised at the number of ballots that didn't have Jameis Winston on them?
I was surprised, Tony. I thought he was going to win in a record landslide.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidasy Andrea, I'm hoping for a great game on January (I think FSU wins but a lot closer than most people think). If/when FSU wins do you see media outlets bringing up the Winston sexual assault story just to draw more readers? Flip the scenario for Auburn, do you see writers writing it's just one more case of luck?
Same to you! I do not think media outlets mention the JW story to draw more readers. I think they mention it because they are facts that cannot be ignored. Fact: JW was investigated. Fact: he was not charged. Those are indisputable. I cannot predict how writers will frame the story on either side.
Do you think the ACC will have a better or worse year in OOC play next year?
I have not even had a chance to look at OOC play for next year. We can get to that one closer to the season! Let's see how bowl season plays out!
If FSU wins it all and jameis is MVP could this be the greatest year ever by a college player with winning. Every award possible?
He did not win every award possible. I believe AJ McCarron won the Maxwell Award and was also the first-team QB on the Walter Camp All-America team.
AA, what do the Hokies have to do until people recognize how great this defense really is? All the rankings I've seen have had them at 4th or 5th, when really at worst their 2nd. I'd even put them above Sparty. Now, I didn't read the Insider article (I'm not an Insider, where were they ranked? ::) ) Where would you put them?
Unfortunately for VT, the W-L record has something to do with that perception. This D did not play that well up in BC, either. I do think they are a top-notch group, don't get me wrong, but I don't think they are better than Florida State or Michigan State.
Will Cutcliffe be able to maintain the success he's enjoyed at Duke the past two years and make them a consistent contender in the ACC like Stanford out west?
I think he has everything in place to maintain the success he has had. He has better players on this roster than he has had at any point during his tenure there. A lot of young talent returns to this team. I do not think anybody will pick Duke to finish in the cellar in 2014.
Jameis goes Pro after next season? Or no? And Why?
All depends on what type of year he is and where he is projected to go. If he was eligible now, he would be the No. 1 pick probably. If that remains the case, I would have a hard time seeing him stay after next season.
If Carey out runs Williams in the AdvoCare bowl, will people finally start to see he is the better overall running back?
Is he the better overall running back? Nobody had more 20-plus yard rushes this season than Andre Williams, and nobody had more 200-plus yard games than Andre Williams (five!). I think both guys made first-team All-America on every single publication I saw.
FSU didn't play well in BC either.
Fair point. But FSU did end up winning that game and held its opponents to single digits 7 times. VT only did that 3 times.
How would you grade Pitt and Syracuse after their first ACC seasons? Do you feel they can eventually be contenders in the league?
Good timing with your question! We have report cards coming out tomorrow for realignment. We gave each team a C based on 6-6 records. Good job by both getting bowl eligible in Year 1 in the ACC but both also had some pretty miserable losses mixed in with the victories.
i hate to see anyone loose their job but coach D has to go two years of very bad defense AL Golden has to make that move or he will really regret it next year if they play the same. miami has been known for their defense this is embarrassing
I understand your frustration. This is not the type of Miami D anybody is used to seeing. I think the DL needs to be upgraded rapidly. It is really unacceptable to have undersized guys playing up front, unable to get any pressure on the QB. There is some talent at LB and in the secondary.
Personally, I think it's more of a testimony to how good VT's D is that it played that well on paper with an offense that bad. FSU's O didn't put their in positions that VT's did. But still, i see your point.
You are right, Ethan. the VT offense did not do their counterparts any favors all season long. Had that group been even slightly better, the results would have been different.
True or False, Mike London won't coach more than 6 games next season in Charlottesville? Is it a bad sign when you're sending cryptic notes to recruits?
Tough to make predictions on when somebody is going to lose a job. There are steep buyouts to pay on that staff so I am not really sure what is going to happen there.
what is your overall outlook on the canes going forward post "ncaa"?... top ten finish ?
Too early to say that. I want to know what happens at QB and on defense before making a bold prediction like that for 2014.
Do you think his off the field issues played a role in Winston not receiving the Maxwell, and First Team Walter Camp honors, like it did with the Heisman ballots?
I honestly have no idea.
I have heard rumors regarding conference realignment over the last few days...'specially since Notre dame and Louisville come on board in 2014....have you heard anything of substance?
The ADs are going to look at the division structure to see whether or not they want to switch up the teams. Notre Dame is not joining for football so this would be deciding whether Atlantic and Coastal alignments should be flipped around.
What is your take on the Boston College bowl game? Can they keep up with Arizona?
I think Arizona has the edge. Much more dynamic offense. BC has been terrific with Andre Williams but that is essentially all they have. The D is very aggressive, sometimes to a fault. That has cost them giving up big plays this season.
Do you see UNC playing FSU in Charlotte with Williams under center a full season? He appears to be better suited for Fedora's system.
I think he is a great fit for the offense, Jeff, and I do have UNC as my way way too early favorite in the Coastal for 2014. But I do reserve the right to change my mind before July!
With Tajh Boyd graduating, how does Clemson look at QB next year? Does Kelly have the edge to start?
Should be an interesting spring in Clemson with Kelly, Cole Stoudt and incoming freshman Deshaun Watson competing for the starting job. I don't think there is a definitive starter for next year at this point.
Hi Andrea, the biggest surprise of the recruiting season is that Virginia snagged 2 of the top 10 recruits of the country! How did they do that? VA is a great school, but the last relevant season they had was I think 1990, you know, back in the stone ages!
UVa is a great academic school and I believe the top players they got are from Virginia so maybe they want to be a part of a group that turns the football program around.
I know that culturally and geographically it wouldn't be the best fit but could Kansas joining the ACC ever be a real option? Not very likely but basketball wise WOW and the Jayhawks with Carolina, Duke, Syracuse. Plus let's just be honest 1. Culture and geography matter little in conference membership these things matter little. 2. the ACC unlike other conferences as much have invited private and basketball schools. So hey I know it's a football chat but for fun why not.
Why would this be an option right now?
Clemson fan here, your thoughts on Divisional Realignment for the ACC? Any hopes for North-South divisions? GO TIGERS!
I like the idea of divisional realignment. I posted my own thoughts on this earlier in the year. http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/56450/take-2-should-acc-realign-divisions
How much of a drop off do you see with Clemson when Boyd leaves?
Not just Boyd, but if Watkins leaves, too, Clemson loses the majority of their offensive firepower. Clemson has done a good job recruiting so I am sure they will have talented players ready to take over. But I think it is fair to say nobody is going to expect Clemson to win the ACC next year ahead of Florida State based on the quarterback position at both schools.
What do you think of the Wake Forest hire? Aside from having a tough job, how does Duke's success compound to the rebuilding at Wake?
I think Duke's success increases the urgency for Wake Forest to get back to bowl games, no question about it. Dave Clawson has won everywhere he has been, and he also has worked at smaller, private academic schools so that is an advantage as well. The hire looks good on paper. We'll see how he does now.
Hey Andrea! I'm an Alabama fan\SEC guy, but I have a few questions to ask. the 1st one is, do you think Florida State will be able to stop Auburn's read-option with the 5-weeks they have off? because no other teams as had that much time off. And...I have another one for you, I personally don't think Jimbo Fisher would leave, but what % do you think he would leave FSU for Texas? And 1 more! who is an ACC "dark horse" team next year? maybe a NC State?
1. I think Florida State will be able to limit the read-option. Auburn will be able to make some plays with it but Florida State has enough talent and speed on defense to be able to slow it down enough to win. 2. I have no idea what Jimbo is going to do and would not even want to hazard a guess. 3. ACC 'darkhorse' ... there were only 3 teams to finish with losing records. Of those 3, I think NC State has the best chance to get back to a bowl game.
the bestter question about winston's football future is how well his baseball season goes this year and next. A crazy thought is that Winston is a far better baseball player than football player and look at what he's done this year on the gridiron!
If he is serious about football and the NFL, he is going to have to give up baseball at some point I think.
Thanks for your answer...but how will Notre Dame be scheduled fairly with or without division realignment? I know they aren't full football members, but they will affect SOS.
It is just going to be a rotation system, playing a team once every 3 years.
Any chance the ACC lets schools host the conference title game as the P-12 does?
No. They love having a neutral site game.
I doubt both schools would agree to it annually, but what would you think about FSU and Clemson playing their game in Atlanta once every 3 years? Would be fun the for the fans and could turn into something similar to the Cocktail Party.
Thumbs down! I love the game-day atmosphere at both Clemson and Florida State. I think it is best to keep that one on their respective campuses.
Andrea, what's your take on possible realignment? Who would you put in the realigned divisions?
These were my expanded thoughts from last June. Read the top part for my two new divisions. http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/56295/acc-mailblog-31
What is your take on Ryan Williams? Can he be a solid starter for the Canes?
I am not sure yet on Ryan Williams. I want to see what he does this spring and whether he wins the starting job.
Does it stress you out that everyone expects you to have detailed answers on everything asked?
Ha! I will let you in on a little secret. Sometimes when there is a delay, I am looking up my old blog posts or some stats to help me out. Google is my friend!
Any idea yet if Maryland has any non-conference games to be scheduled with ACC opponents once they leave? It's not like Texas A&M or Missouri leaving the Big 12 that left some nasty feelings still there.
I know there has been some talk about maybe getting Virginia on the schedule at some point down the line but nothing definitive. Looks like Syracuse is the only one on the future schedule.
Hi Andrea, happy holidays to you! No other questions, but I just want to say how much we appreciate you and Heather. We are truly lucky to have the best bloggers covering the best conference! Go ACC, & Go Louisville Cardinals!
Thanks, Max! We appreciate all of you loyal readers just as much. Happy holidays!
I think the ACC should get rid of divisions completely. Would be much better to just put the 2 best records against one another.
How would you work out scheduling?
Who is the first ACC player drafted in 2014?
Hmmmmmmmmm .... Sammy Watkins, if he leaves early.
Did you vote Aaron Donald for Heisman?
I did not, but I did vote for him for defensive awards I had votes for this year.
...Best ACC rivalry? ( IN CONFERENCE )
There is a lot of talk about Jimbo going to Texas. Reports say he has "agreed" to a 5 year extension with the Noles but hasn't signed it. Do you know the status of this?
Last reports are that they agreed to the new contract. I do not think it has been signed just yet.
Which school in the ACC is most likely to join FSU, Clemson, and Miami as recruiting powers within the conference?
Could be Louisville if Charlie Strong stays on long-term. He has done a great job bringing in talent from the state of Florida and now that they are in the ACC I am sure he will use that to his advantage. I am not a recruiting expert so this question might be better off for the folks who handle that for us full time.
It would help if ACC went to 9 games, but just some sort of rotation like the Big 10 had before divisions.
It is a lot harder to do that with 14 teams. I do think that conferences will eventually move to 9 league games. It will only be a matter of time.
Didn't I tell you Tajh Boyd was scared? His performance had to drop his stock at least a round, right?
His performance in both that game and the Florida State game. I have not seen him mentioned in the first round lately.
Opposed to division reallignment, why not just scrap the rivalry game? Don't see the added value whne it means teams are going 6 years without seeing each other.
I suggested this yesterday during a radio interview but I am not sure how many ADs would be in favor of that. Florida State and Miami are always going to want to play. Hard to scrap games like that.
Re Jameis the baseball player: Don't know who that guy reads but everyone says he has no future beyond FSU playing baseball
Random question: Haven't seen this discussed anywhere, but the idea of a 9 game league schedule has me wondering if the NCAA will ever expand from 12 games to 13. They've gone from 10, to 11, to 12, so it's not that far fetched. And I believe some teams already do play a 13th game here and there. What do you think?
I think that is highly unlikely, especially with a four-team playoff. That means teams that make it to the NC game AND have a conference championship game would then be playing 16 games.
All right everyone, my time is up. Thanks for joining me today and hope everybody has a wonderful holiday!!! Thanks for a great chatting season!
