Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

I had a little computer glitch, but it's all worked out. Y'all ready to do this. Let's go

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Aside from Jerry stepping down as GM/Head Coach which will never happen, what are three key things Dallas must do in the offseason?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

That's tough question with season just over. But we do know the Cowboys must fix the defensive line through draft. They need to fix the situation with the coordinators and they need to figure out what to do with Hatcher and Ware. Does Jerry have the courage to say bye to Ware and Austin and Hatcher.Seriously, Miles was a non-factor and if you can have the No. 32 D with Ware and Hatcher are they really that important? It's a question that must be answered.

Ken (Chapel Hill, NC)

Sometimes I wish that a Billionaire would just buy the Cowboys and all of our troubles would just melt away...

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

Don't hold your breath...lol

Adam (Toronto)

So Kiffin, gone, Garrett, stays. Any word on what the plan will be for OC? The team lacks an offensive identity and clearly the numbers tell us that when Romo throws a lot, it doesn't equal success.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:13 PM)

I would disagree., It absolutely has an ID. It's a passing team that prefers to operate out of 3 receiver sets. If Garrett would run the ball 5 percent less. Or throw it 5 percent less. It would make a huge difference. Of the 10 teams that threw the ball the most, only New Orleans made the playoffs. It doesn't matter why they threw it that much - philosophy, behind, etc. Only that they threw it that much.

Adam (Toronto)

So Ware won't take a pay cut. Can't really blame the guy, but what does Jerruh do? You can't realistically pay him that much money when he's clearly on the decline and seems injury prone.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

Cut him, if you think it's int eh best interest of the DC. Ware's agent will test the market and see what he can get. If DC say we'll give you $8 million plus incentives and his agent finds the market will give him $6 million, then you stay. It's a business decision on both ends.

Cain (Berwyn )

Happy holidays JJT If kiffin is let go or retires who could you see as a replacement and also does Garrett have any say in the decision cause it look like rob Ryan and kiffin were JJ hires.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

If they want to keep the 4-3, then Leslie Frazier might be good option if Rod Marinelli doesn't want the job. Frankly, a lot might depend on where Lovie Smith goes and what assistant coaches go with him

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Why does the Dallas Cowboys keep Collapsing on the Last Day of the Regular Season instead of Moving into the Playoffs?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

I'm going to act like Jason Garrett. Take the emotion out of the equation. They haven't been favored in any of the 3 games and Vegas knows best, right? It's hard to win these games on the road, which happened with the first two. The Philly game was home, but few people thought they were going to win. The reality is the last 3 years they've been average team trying to pull of upset.

Davis (Boston)

Do you think the cowboys should stay with the 4-3 or change back to the 3-4?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

I would go back to 3-4. JJ ego won't let him

Davis (Boston)

With Jason Hatcher going to the highest bidder, should the cowboys give him the money he wants or would that be a mistake?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

The Cowboys were one of the worst defenses in NFL history. Jason Hatcher didn't miss a game. He'll be 32 next year. No way you pay him, especially since he's had one outstanding season. You wish you could keep him, but you just can't.

Davis (Boston)

with the offensive line doing well this year, would Callahan stay if/when Jerry strips him of the play calling duties?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

I wouldn't think so. He's not going to get demoted and stay here

Adam (Toronto)

Stay or Go: Hatcher, Ware, Austin, Waters.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Bye. Depends on the price. Bye. Bye.

Davis (Boston)

Should Jason Garrett call the plays this season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

I would. If my job is on the line, I'm taking all of the responsibility

R Lank, MD [via mobile]

i really think garret needs 2 get with romo on stickn with plays thats sent n from sideline on certain situations. im sorry it just seems 2me romo cares about stats and big numbers nstead clock management. if garret does'nt watchout 4 things like that its goin 2 cost him his job eventually ur thoughts

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

Romo changed lots of plays that worked out well. And he changed a lot of plays that didn't. It's all about the situation. The issue isn't that Tony changed a play against Green Bay it was the situation in which he changed the play. It was dumb given the circumstances

vince (mobile,al)

When will someone convince Jerry to change his draft strategy? Since the Ware, Spears, Canty & Ratliff draft, the Cowboys have only drafted 3 DL.(Hatcher,Lissemore and Crawford) That's the problem with the defense

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

When the Cowboys feel good about a spot, they often ignore it figuring anybody they draft won't play. Instead, they should just take the best platter. You can rarely go wrong taking the best player

Jimmer (Sacramento, CA)

What is George Selvie's contract status? Thought he had a solid year --will he be back?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

another year left on his deal

Kevin (Reno, NV)

Does Jerry Jones shake up the coaching staff, while leaving his 'YES" man?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

I wouldn't say garrett is a yes man. I think both coordinators will change.

Mike P (Greater KC Metro)

JJT, even though the cowboys didnt make the playoffs again on the final sunday of the year, how secure is Jason Garrett's job... seems to me Jerry Jones is hamstringing this great offensive mind and wont let him coach or call plays.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

Garrett is as secure as Bill Belichick for one more year

Norman (NY)

I love Garrett the head coach for the offseason and Tuesdays through Saturdays but when it comes to game day the guy has been nothing short of disastrous and hasn't shown any sign of learning from his insane mistakes. Is there any reason for me to believe he'll finally figure things out a la Ron Rivera this season, or are we in for another typical Cowboys season filled with promise but ultimately disappointing?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

if his players play better. He'll be better overall. But he must do a better job of managing the run-pass ratio whether he's calling plays or not. He's gotta keep the run-pass ratio at 60 pct. 61 pct at the most

Chip (Wichita Falls, TX)

Could you two new coordinators coming in? Maybe promoting Marinelli and possible hire Norv Turner? Although I don't think Norv Turner would take the job. Do you?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

I don't think Norv wants to be here unless he's the HC

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

Oh, I'm not good enough to be your HC - remember Jerry picked Wade over Norv - but you want me to be your OC. Whatever.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

JJT, we've been here before. Any hope things will change in Big D, or does the status quo of mediocrity remain?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

to me, lot closer to disaster than triumph

Matt (Philly)

DeMarco Murray had 17 carries for 51 yards for a 3.0 average. Maybe the a little more consistency from Murray would be helpful?

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

really? Dude is first 1,100 yard rusher since Emmitt had 1,200 in 2000. He averaged 5.2 per carry and scored 8 TDs. He also caught 53 passes for 350 yards and scored biggest TD of season against Wash. Imagine if DC hadn't made him a decoy much of the season

Chuck (Philly)

JJ - As an Eagles fan watching that game I must say I never thought at any point the Cowboys would come back and win. Just seems like they don't have the DNA to win games like that. In the past I certainly have not felt that way about Cowboy teams. Am I just a crazy outsider, or if I'm right in that something just seems to be lacking, where do you think that comes from? Thanks

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

You were probably the only one. The way the momentum of the game was going, I figured Orton could drive them and put them in FG position for one of the best kickers in the game

Victor (Monroe,La)

I think jerry jones made a big mistake by keeping Jason garrett .and I,ll give you an example look he has a 24 win 24 loss record if Jason doesn't get with it next year he is gone.comments.

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

At some point, you have to win more games. But I can see progress with this team. The GB loss is the one that bothered me more than any other this season. Overall, I don't think this team is that talented

Tom (Maryland)

With Spencer coming off of injury, Ware is 31 and Hatcher is 31, can the Cowboys really afford to let all 3 walk away? Even if they draft 2 linemen, they need experience. Would you keep Spencer over Ware?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

Absolutely

Geoff (DC)

You think Dallas will keep Marinelli? Nor sure if we can walk away or not. Thakns

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

I believe he has 2 years left on his deal.

Brad (Stilson GA)

Short of nuclear Armageddon, will anything prevent Jason Garrett from being coach for eternity? P.S. How did he ever get out of Princeton...legacy?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

Sure. He probably needs to win next season. Then again, I figured he would have to get to the playoffs this year

Matt (Dallas)

Should the 'Boys consider trading Romo if the right offer comes along?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

Nope. Unless you want Orton to be starter. I don't. Love him as a backup

Robert (Tallahassee )

How can the Cowboys look at their roster without realizing that they need to declare a rebuilding stage. Trade everyone, cut the rest keep Smith, Frederick. Bryant is too childish. Draft Bridgewater.

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

They've been rebuilding. They just haven't declared it. I thought Houston was going to take Bridgewater in the first round

Mike P (Greater KC Metro)

Brandon Carr has not lived up to the contract he got in 2012... this is the last year of that 3 year deal... will it be a stellar year or the same and what does he need to do to get better next year

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

He was solid last year and solid the first half of the season. He was back the second half of the season

Pete (MD)

One thing I noticed about this team is the secondary flat out stinks playing the ball in the air. We all watched time and time again corners/safetys in decent-good coverage just failing to make a play on the ball.

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

I don't know that that's a skill you can teach. You're right, though. They are awful, for the most part, with the ball in the air

Ray (Lewisville)

Do the Mavs have any interest in Andrew Bynum? Also heard that Josh Smith was benched in a recent Pistons game (2nd time this year). Could the Mavs be in play for either of those two?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

Nope. Carlisle wants guys with a passion for the game - something Bynum lacks

Matt (Philly)

I said CONSISTENCY about Murray... 6 games averaging 4.3ypc or lower, 5 games above 6.0. CONSISTENCY.

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

consistency has to do with getting the ball consistently. RBs need a rhythm. He can't give himself the ball.

Kenny (Washington DC)

Secondary, is Dallas going to get a legit SS/FS to play next to Church, also is the team looking @ a QB to groom

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

they hope JJ Wilcox can evolve into that guy. Skeptical considering he couldn't beat out Heath

Marty (NH)

Bigger surprise - Travis Frederick or Terrence Williams ? I know the passing over of Sheriff Floyd still stings given the D line, but I thought both players were solid contributors.

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

Probably williams. The game is really hard for rookie receivers. He was a legit playmaker. He wasn't perfect, but he should be dynamic next to Dez next season.

Eric (Dallas)

Does Jerry not think he can blow the thing up and still fill the seats.....which is what he's most concerned about.

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

JJ wants to try to win while he has a high level QB

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Will Dallas ever fully commit to a balanced offense instead of just saying they want to balance it out?

JJT
  (1:49 PM)

balanced offense in today's NFL is about 60-40. They were closer to 65-35 this year, which is too much

Mark (Toronto)

Hey JJT, great job all season (even if you said things we sometimes did not want to hear). I know you take best available player when it is time to draft, but from a priorities perspective besides D-line where should the next area of focus be, safety, LB or OL?

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

Thanks much. LB. Pretty clear you can't rely on Lee to stay healthy. A versatile dude and you're gonna need replacement for Carter in a year unless they think Holloman can play weak side, a possibility, and Wilber can play on the strong side

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Do the Cowboys bring in a defensive coordinator who utilize the 3-4 defense next season given their personnel?

JJT
  (1:52 PM)

I don't think so, though they should

Pete (MD)

For all those saying to blow it up, if the 2013 DC had even a league average D, they prob finish the Detroit/GB games and make the playoffs.

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

Lot of folks disagree, but the offense wasted a ton of opportunities. We know the D was pathetic, but the only think they did good was create turnovers and give the offense the ball in scoring position. They got 4 TOs against Detroit and O wasted them, which put Detroit in position to rally. They gave O a TO at the Philly 20 with a chacne to take the lead. O managed just a FG. That's just a couple of examples. We know the D is one of the worst of all time, but the reality is that if O had taken full advantage of the one thing the D does, they coulda made the playoffs.

Kyle Lovette (Warner Robins, Georgia)

If Kiffin does indeed "retire," would a Marinelli promotion be proof that Jones and/or Garrett believe injuries were the main culprit for the worst in Cowboys history defense whereas bringing in someone from the outside would prove that even with all the injuries, Jones and/or Garrett see coaching and scheme as the bigger reasons for the failure of the defense?

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

They had to use 20 DL, which is a huge number. Kiffin just wasn't that good. Marinelli, if he wants the job, would be better

Aaron (Leesburg, VA)

Would Jerry Jones and the Cowboys be getting slammed even more if they weren't in the same division with an even worse owner in Danny Boy Snyder?

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

I don't think so

JJT
  (1:59 PM)

best on the board. They don't need to spend picks moving up. More likely they will move down, which I don't like either

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

When will Dallas be able to get over the disaster draft in 2009? They haven't had solid depth since.

Cain (Berwyn)

Would Norv turner be a option as O coordinator?I remember Garrett wanting him when he first got hired.

JJT
  (1:59 PM)

Perhaps a good draft this year and next

R Lank, MD [via mobile]

Just 1more thing thanks 4 listening and allowing me 2 vent about garret and romo my god they both hav 2 come with sumthn better nextyear

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

cool. happy New Year

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

Nice chat today. I enjoyed it. Be safe tonight, and I hope each of you has a Happy New Year!!
