Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:04 PM)

Usually, I have on R&B while I do this chat. Today, I've got my workout/rap playlist. That means you probably need to come strong or get dunked on. Oh yea, sipping on Ultra Red Monster. Well, this should be interesting. Let's roll.

Carl (Raleigh NC)

What's up JJT,happy new year,I see where Jerry is pushing for 2 extra playoffs per conference but I think it would make more sense to add 1 team per conference and have 7-2 6-3 5-4 and only the 1 seed gets the bye

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

From what I've read and heard the NFL will add 1 more team to each conference and I've got no problem with that just because it means the top seed is the only one getting a bye. It puts legit weight on having best record in the conference. So I'm down with it

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will Play in Super Bowl XLVIII?

JJT
  (1:07 PM)

SF and Den

R Lank, MD [via mobile]

how is it that rookie and bac up qb's come out year n year out and outduel romo? lastyear rg3 russel wilson andrew luck kaeperneck and led thier teams 2playoffs. they looked like veterans and he looks like a rookie everyyear. whats up with that

JJT
  (1:08 PM)

Sometimes, the other team is better - even if the quarterback isn't. Romo missed the last game. I don't think Philly wash his fault

Aaron (Mesquite) [via mobile]

If the 'boys do fire Kiffin, and don't promote the Defensive Line coach, who else is a viable option?

JJT
  (1:09 PM)

Jim Scwhwartz? Jim Haslett? Matt Eberflus, the current LB coach? Dave Wannstedt?

sambrowne [via mobile]

Should the Cowboys trade Demarcus Ware for first round picks ?

JJT
  (1:09 PM)

No team would give you a first-round pick for him. Or a 2nd. Or a 3rd. Start with a fourth.

Damon Santiago (Bronx, New York)

Why should loyal Cowboys fans such as myself continue to be loyal? when the Owner/General manager, based on his moves or non moves, seems perfectly contempt with having average 8-8 seasons. Why should I believe that things will ever change?

JJT
  (1:10 PM)

Above my pay grade. You want to cheer, then cheer. You want to boycott, then boycott. Every fan must answer that for himself. You a grown man. Make your own decision. I trust you.

elvis (Sherman) [via mobile]

How will Strong affect the longhorns recruiting for this coming class?

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

We'll find out a lot more in the next couple of weeks. But the good thing is that he embraced Mack and Mack embraced him, so Mack is probably telling all recruits that UT remains a great place, so there's no need to change schools. He might bring a couple of recruits he and committed in Louisville with him. Or he might see that as bad business. The reality is he's not going to really impact this class much because there's just not enough time. The best thing he can do is keep the commitments UT has

Paul. [via mobile]

With romo set to turn 34, with major back issues arising, witten another year older, and Demarcus ware a shell of his former self, do the cowboys look past there prime ?

JJT
  (1:12 PM)

Yep. They're a lot closer to 4-12 than 12-4 to me.

Alex (Schofield Barracks, HI) [via mobile]

I have heard rumors of James Harden is on the trading block. What are the chances of the Mavs pursuing this and actually landing the superstar the Mavs have been looking for to team with Dirk?

JJT
  (1:13 PM)

I don't see that happening. Why would they trade Harden, he's one of the most dynamic players in the NBA - and you can't win with just one star (D12).

Buddy (California)

Does Gavin Escobar become the #2 Tight end next season. Are the Cowboys not happy with James Hanna?

JJT
  (1:15 PM)

He should. Hey, I see his receiving skills - his hands and the way he catches the ball and gets down the seam - and I see why they drafted him. The crime, to me, is they didn't use his skill set. They gave Miles too much credit and rode him because they were hoping and praying he would return to form. Escobar will be nice next season, if the Cowboys use him.

Davis (Boston)

If miles gets cut, should the Cowboys replace him with a young receiver or a cap casualty veteran receiver?

JJT
  (1:16 PM)

receivers are like 2 guards in the NBA. They're everywhere. You don't need a veteran. Dwyane Harris and Cole Beasley are cool as 3 and 4. And Escobar can work the slot. They can add a FA or a 1-2 year veteran, but no one you've ever heard of

Andy (Fry St, Denton)

Could you see the Mavs taking a chance on a Melo rental?

JJT
  (1:17 PM)

Interesting. it would depend on the price. He's such a selfish player I don't know that you would get the best from him . He's a great talent, but I'm not much of a Carmelo fan. That said, if he was available and the price was right I'd take a shot. As constructed, the Mavs aren't a contender.

JJT
  (1:20 PM)

robert Mathis of the Colts had fewer than 10 sacks three of the past 4 years. He had 19 this year. The quad really affected him. He relies on initial burst and if you don't have it, you become ordinary. He can regroup, but maybe he needs to be a specialist instead of getting pounded every down. The key is too maximize his productivity

Charles (Heathrow, florida)

Dware has reclarified his position and has stated he will not take a pay cut even after under performing on one of the leagues all time worst defenses. With a sagging performance last year, being on the wrong side of thirty and a cap hit somewhere north of some small countries gross domestic product is it viable to hope he stays healthy and returns to a player who at least remotely deserves to be one of the highest paid in the league?

D Green Dallas [via mobile]

Hey JJT...Aren't u tired of hearing fair weather fans jump ship every time a little something goes wrong? I'm starting to think fan is a very misunderstood word... Meaning Cowboy, Rangers, and Mavs fans should lighten up a little... support whether we're up or down...sometimes we can't get the big wins or big free agents...hey at least we're not Cleveland or Miami or any other horrible sports town. How long have the Browns been bad? Wat about the Marlins? Somebody name me two starters for the Raptors or Bucks... and please other than Peyton, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, maybe Wilson, Keapernick, and Newton because they're dual threats... it's not another QB that's worth Romos jockstrap in production and HEART. Do you agree or do I just love Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban, and John Daniels I don't care wat you think attitude too much???

JJT
  (1:22 PM)

The reality is it matters not to me. You either want to support your favorite team or you don't, if you're a real fan. There's no in-between to me. Then again, I root for Ohio State's football and basketball team and nothing else

Shawn (Frozen Mountains of NC)

Who would you name as Kiffin's replacement provided that he is released?

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

Eberflus, who's on the staff. Young dude with something to prove. Besides, Garrett in last year of deal and it might be more difficult to get established dude in here

kevin (lewisville)

okay with problems mavs center position. would and should the mavs consider andrew bynum?

JJT
  (1:24 PM)

He has a loser mentality. You really think he would mesh with Carlisle? I don't.

tashaun cook [via mobile]

Will demarcus ware get cut

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

He might. No one knows right now. He's not worth the $12 million he's supposed to make this season because that would make him the highest paid DE in the game

Mark (Cary, NC)

Happy New Year JJT !!! It is obvious the Cowboys need help along DLine - but couldn't you make the argument that the addition of another dominant OLineman to protect an aging QB and improve running game would help the D's cause?

JJT
  (1:25 PM)

Thank you. OK, but OLine was healthy and overall good this season

Keith G (St Louis, MO)

JJT,I lived in the Metroplex and still follow the Mavs. Observations. The Mavs need to scrap just trying to make the playoffs and rebuild. They needs legit 3rd option cause Marion isn't that player. They also need a coach who can develop young players which Carlisle has never been able to do during his tenure. Lastly, the Mavs shot selection is horrible. Why don't they work to get higher percentage shots and play a team concept style?

JJT
  (1:26 PM)

That sounds great, but you don't want to do that as long as Dirk remains a viable player. You want to give him a shot to win as long as he's still a good player. They're one of the best offensive teams in the league and shoot one of the highest percentages. You'd be better off complaining about their rebounding and defense

McMann (New Hampshirt)

Do you think the Cowboys will do any better than 8-8 next year? I see no reason why they will make any profound improvement no matter what they do because Jerra will still be in charge.

JJT
  (1:27 PM)

Dude, we haven't had the draft or FA yet. We have no idea who will be offensive or defensive coordinator. How could we possibly know how they will do next season?

Aaron (Duncanville, TX) [via mobile]

Is it fair to say that the Cowboys will draft all defense in the draft?

JJT
  (1:28 PM)

No

pj (midlo)

HI JJT - any chance Rangers jump into derby to seriously bid on pitcher Tanaka? Darvish and Tanaka quite a foundation (on the way to the Braves did with Smoltz, Maddux and Glavine)

JJT
  (1:29 PM)

I don't think so. I think they made a choice between Choo and the possibility of Tanaka. They have enough to win right now. The rotation is solid and the BP should be excellent

John (SATX)

Saw the Cowboys "Legends" Darren Woodson episode the other night on FOXSW and wondered why didn't he ever get into coaching. It seems like he would have made a great coach.

JJT
  (1:29 PM)

too much time - not enough money

Ray (from Southside)

Hi JJT,Love your work...always spitting the truth...i dont have a question just want to say keep up the good work and i look forward to following u on twitter and reading your columns....

JJT
  (1:30 PM)

check in the mail. ...thanks

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Is this Mavs team, with the addition of Tyson Chandler, a threat to win the title? I believe Marion is a good 3rd option, provided there is an anchor in the pain.

JJT
  (1:30 PM)

I don't think so. Hard to capture lightening twice.

Zak K (Minneapolis)

Do you respect the late, great Donny Hathaway?

JJT
  (1:32 PM)

"Where is the Love?"

Vince (Grand Rapids, Michigan)

Hi JTT, is it fair to say that Morris Claiborne is a complete bust and that its time to move on?

JJT
  (1:33 PM)

He has one more season before I move on mentally and start planning for his replacement. He needs to show more fire. He was a little too comfortable when Scandrick TOOK his job and REFUSED to give it back

Dan (NY)

How much trouble are the 'Boys in next year with the cap? I'm sure they will restructure Romo, Witten, Ware, and Carr, while most likely cut ways with Austin, but will they be able to make enough moves to be a player in free agency?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

$31 million over the cap. They can make it happen without too much consternation, but at some point the bill comes due. You just hope you've won a title or some playoff games when it occurs

Omar [via mobile]

Do you think Ricky Ledo will ever be a top 15 shooting guard in the NBA ?

JJT
  (1:34 PM)

haven't seen nearly enough of him. Who knows?

Jacob (Iowa)

Could the Cowboys look at switching Lee and Carter spots? I know there was talk about it last offseason...

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

No, Lee is a MLB and Carter isn;'t physical enough to consistently play good between the tackles as a 4-3 MLB

elijah (dallas)

chances dirk wins comeback player of the year?

JJT
  (1:35 PM)

No idea. Haven't even thought about it. Maybe, Kyrie Irving

Jim Hill (Decatur, Il)

Do you think anybody in the orginization has ever mentioned to Jerry to step back a little from coaching. I understand his stubborness on personel but he is the GM not a coach. By coaching I'm referring to hiring and firing assistants, changing schemes, naming play callers, etc. There is not another team in the league that has a guy with the title of head coach who has another "coach" above him. I am aware that he owns the team I also am aware the Cowboys have won 3 Super Bowls on his watch but they were last century. We have become a joke. We could fire Garrett and get a guy just like him because no credible coach would coach under these circumstances. So one of his family members should tell him to add another slash to his title of owner/pres/gm or quit coaching.

JJT
  (1:36 PM)

do you know anyone at another major company who would tell the owner of the company to step back? I don't. It's his team, he bought it and he's said a trillion times he's going to run it a certain way

Davis (Boston )

With Andy Reid still having clock management issues, does this at all make you concerned about Garrett?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

when Garrett has a bunch of playoff losses under his belt, we can debate

Mark [via mobile]

Will Garrett call plays next season?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

no idea. He should

Ryan (DC) [via mobile]

I don't see much need to draft offense at all. OL actually seems decent and picks past round 4 usually don't pan out at that position. Aside from maybe a 6-7 round flyer for a WR / RB I'd like: DL, LB, DL, S, DL in that order. Thoughts?

daniel (ny)

How are teams like chicago, minnesota, and seattle successful with the tampa 2 defensive but everyone saying monte defense is outdated?

JJT
  (1:37 PM)

you never go wrong drafting the best player. Period.

JJT
  (1:38 PM)

daniel (ny): How are teams like chicago, minnesota, and seattle successful with the tampa 2 defensive but everyone saying monte defense is outdated?JJT: It's like the west coast offense: Everyone has their own version of it with their own twist

roland (providence)

Why would the cowboys consider replacing ware when you will still have to replace him and he's still a good player when healthy?

JJT
  (1:39 PM)

because he's not worth the cap hit and you can use the money u save on his cap number in other areas

elijah (dallas)

how much would murray command & how many good years do you think he has before some barber type stuff happens?

JJT
  (1:40 PM)

Murray is one of my favorite dudes, but I'm not paying him. RBs are more plentiful than WRs. He's had durability issues as a young man. That ain't gonna get better.

Rowdy (Rio Grande City)

JJT, what are the chances that the D line is good again with ALL those injured linemen? U think Crawford is upto something? How about Bass?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

It wasn't good this year. It was, at times, adequate. Crawford & Bass will each return. Hatcher likely won't. Young guns needed. Probably take one in the draft. Maybe, 2

John (New Jersey)

Happy New Year JJT - is Marinelli the de facto DC if Kiffin is not retained? If not, would Ray Horton consider becoming DC if not hired as HC nor retained in Cleveland? Lastly, can either Mike Zimmer or Todd Bowles be named DC/Assistant Head Coach?

JJT
  (1:41 PM)

titles no longer enable a club to steal a coach from another team

Vince (Michigan)

Hi JJT, great work as always, I was wondering your thoughts on whether there's a good chance the Cowboys might take Clinton-Dix a safety in the first round? If so, would that be a good move?

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

Don't be mad, but I'm not a draft guy. I don't even think about the draft until after FA. Some guys love the draft. I don't. As it gets closer, I'll pay attention to the Cowboys' specific needs, but that's a long way off for me.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

The Mavs look like a team still trying to gel and learn how to handle situations with the maturity of winners, such as when they have a big lead, or when they need a key stop. Is this something you see getting better as the season goes on?

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

they're a jump shooting team like they've always been. When the shots fall they can blow you out. When they don't, they let you back in. Plus, they don't play D and struggle to rebound. All of those make it easier for teams to comeback

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Any reason why Ricky Ledo was called up from the D-League?

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

Marion sprained ankle

Nathan (East Texas)

Do you think Garret should have been fired after his third season of 8-8?

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

nope

Travainta Rodgers (Atlanta Georgia )

Have you heard the rumors of Jason Garrett and Bill Callahan having a icy relationship? Do you think he returns?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

No. No.

Aaron (South Carolina)

Thoughts on Morris Claiborne after year 2?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

Average at best. Needs to get a lot better

bigg daddy in CARROLLTON (CARROLLTON)

Jean, another year another dissapointing one for the Cowboys, Frankly I'm one of the happy ones that with this football we saw this year that we did'nt get embarrass in the playoff. I have but a comment brother. Sorry about Ohio state, great game shame someone had to lose. Can you ask Jerry for the sake of the Cowboys fans like myself who have struggle with the ups and downs of winning and losing since the 70's, If he can just have his staff set up a poll on the Cowboys website to offer draft choices and free agents choice of our own. I see the pain in Mr. Jones face every game and I'm here to let him know there is a better way. True Cowboy fans also wants whats best for this organization. Also Fyi, Trade jobs with the current Def Cord with the current Def Line coach. Ask Former great Darren Woodson about a job as an Intern being tutored under the New D cord. JJT I like the way you keep it real.

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

funny. No chance, though

donald (rosenberg tx)

bring wade phillips as defensive coordinator and jason as our offense coordinator. is that crazy?? say what you want, but he can coach defense

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

DC running 4-3. Wade is all about 3-4

James (El PAso)

What is the Dallas Cowboys best option for getting a playmaker at the strong saftey position? But do you think they need a playmaker SS?

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

Hopefully, Wilcox is that dude since they spent 3R pick on him

Thomas Garcia (Santa Clarita)

This is in regards to Kiffin haters, along with a question for you to give me your thought.During the offseason they added 1 piece in Free agency...1! They didn't address that side of the ball in the draft until the 3rd rd when they drafted a S who only played that position for 1 yr. Then they drafted a CB, and then a LB in the 7th.Notice, they didn't get ANY d line help in FA or the draft and they're making the switch to a 4-3!Ware declined in 2012, Rat was already declining, Hatcher is in his 30's (He missed games in '13), Spencer had 2 serviceable seasons...just 2, and he was getting old too, AND he rarely played full seasons. Lee hadn't proved he could stay healthy for a full season, and neither could Carter. With all of that taken into account, are you surprised a really bad defense got worse during a yr when they changed the scheme? They wanted more TO's, and they did that. It's not the scheme, It's not the coaches...It's the players. Moreover it's the guy who's in charge of acquiring those players

JJT
  (1:47 PM)

a lot of truth there, but it's just dumb to let Megatron catch 14 passes for 329 yards without making a n adjustment. His defense doesn't adjust or adapt. They do what they do. If it's good enough, cool. If not, they get smoked.

Zak K (Minneapolis)

Do you regret picking Waxahachie to beat HP in '91?

JJT
  (1:48 PM)

Hmmm. I don't know about that. You gonna have to prove it. I did pick Branndon Stewart and Stephenville to beat the Hatch and they did with Stewart high-stepping from the 50 on one TD

Ed (Queens Village)

Do you vote for Baseball HOF? If you do who gets your vote?

JJT
  (1:49 PM)

nope. A few more years.

JJT
  (1:49 PM)

30 of 32 starters taken in 1st 3 rounds. Brady and Romo are exceptions. If you serious, then take one first 3 rounds. Otherwise take another UFA

Steve (Arizona)

Whats the love affair with jeef heath at valley ranch?

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

he's UFA from a Div II school. What expectations should you have for a 6th safety. He was a good special team player and he made more plays than Claiborne did this year. Interception against Wash, FF against Detroit, FR for TD against NY, goal line PBU against Raiders. If he's 4th-5th safety next year, cool.

Ryan (Richmond) [via mobile]

What's the likelihood of bring Norv Turner in as offensive coordinator?

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

50-50. Depends on if Jerry wants to eat last year of Callahan and pay Norv as one of highest paid coordinators.

Frank (Chi)

It seems like Cowboy fans all pretty much hate Romo, and most Chicago fans hate Cutler. I like Cutler, but I would gladly trade him straight up for Romo in a heartbeat!

JJT
  (1:52 PM)

Cool.

Dale (Denton)

Dallas Mavericks...has Donnie and Mark lost their touch in evaluating talent? None of their moves in the last two years have added any meaningful talent to this team.

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

I like what I've seen of Larkin, but they need to do a lot better especially when you see the Spurs with a litany of young dudes contributing

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Ever see Jerry and the owners getting rid of the salary cap?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

nope. Guarantees them $$$

Michael (Lubbock TX)

can they afford to sign bailey?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

yes, and they will.

Shake (California)

Why would Garrett stick around ? If he really wanted to stick it to Jerry he would quit on the day before the first game next season. I think its high time someone makes the Cowboys look even worse. Only then will Jerry get the message. Mike Munchak stood on principle in Tennessee. I think the coaching staff in Dallas should too.

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

he's under contract and there are only 32 of these jobs. He wants his $3.5 million

Keith H (Seattle)

Michael Corleone: "Tessio was always smarter." Tessio = Jimmy Johnson. Clemenza = Jerry Jones. That explains everything to me.

JJT
  (1:54 PM)

OK, I'll pass that on

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

What difference would it make with Garrett calling plays? If I remember correctly, Garrett was calling plays the last two seasons and dallas finished 8-8 both those years.

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

I expect more from you. The record is the record. If you're gonna get fired, go down doing it your way, which is running the offense - not with someone else controlling your fate

Aaron (Leesburg, VA)

Which franchise is in more disarray, Cowboys or Redskins?

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

washington. Easy

Deangelo (Texas)

Has tony been around to comment on the season?

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

Nope, but neither have i

Vince (Grand Rapids, Michigan)

The Cowboys have not drafted many DL of late, do you think this year they finally will draft DL in the first round?

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

I would think so. Then again, maybe there's a TE they like

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Do we know how much of the Louisville staff will join Charlie Strong in Austin?

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

nope. I'd say quite a few, though

bigg daddy (CARROLLTON)

JJ,use your juice,Need you to take this to DMN and have them set up a local blog/ survey etc and allow the true fans to draft for the Cowboys. obviously No one else can.

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

I been at ESPN for 3 years bro, which is why I'm on an ESPN chat. DMN still like family, but you gonna have to have someone else do that

Josh (Dallas)

Can you think of ANYTHING that would give a Cowboy fan hope for the future?

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

The power of prayer...lol...made myself laugh. I'd say the OLine looks pretty good. The offense, overall, should be good.

Frank (Chi)

Romo for Cutler straight up.... would you do it?

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

Nope. Cutler has personality issues. Not a fan

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

What one play defined the Cowboys season in your opinion?

JJT
  (1:59 PM)

you" have to wait until a week from Friday. No.10 was on the website today

Vince (Grand Rapids, Michigan)

Do you think that Jason Garrett is a good evaluator of talent for purposes of the draft?

JJT
  (1:59 PM)

think he's solid

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

If the Cowboys made zero personnel changes to the starters on offense, though made several moves with high draft picks and free agents on defense, can this team improve to 10-6?

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

No.

David (Austin)

Your statement about the defense not adjusting being dumb works for both sides of the ball. Your boy Garrett can't figure out that running the ball keeps that lousy defense on the bench. Talk about dumb

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

OK

David (Dallas)

How do you think the Aggies will do next year without Manziel (assuming he comes ou)

JJT
  (2:01 PM)

8-4.Bama, Auburn & LSU in the same division is rugged and they gotta break in new QB

JJT
  (2:03 PM)

It has been a great chat today. Let's do it again next week. Peace, love and soul.
