And so it begins!!! 2014 and the weekly fastest hour in golf. Tiger shoots 79, the R&A makes lasers (Distance Measuring Devices) legal, and I can tell you ALL about the PGA Merchandise Show! Time to get this year going... BRING IT!!!
Hi Michael Do you think tiger woods will win tournaments this year?
Hey Victor. Not only will Tiger win multiple events, he's gonna win the Masters.
Welcome back! Looking good, MC. You been working out?
Thanks Tom. Been working out my mouth!
Did Tigers performance this weekend truly signal the beginning of the end or was it just another blip on the radar?
To be honest with you, I think he played like a guy who hadn't played a tournament in a month. Which is exactly where Tiger was. Just remember last year when he said he'd trade a couple of the 5 wins for a major. It's the majors that matter
Tiger's never going to win again!!! Ok if I put the over/under at .5 for how many 18 hole rounds TW played between the World Challenge and Weds pro-am are you taking the over or under?
I'd say you're dead on and I'd say you get a push!
o/u 0.5 caddy races this week....what are you taking?
I REALLY hope that a couple of caddies either have the players carry the bag for the hole (in protest) or race anyway and then threaten the tour with a lawsuit if they try and suspend. It's just not the tour's place to ban ar force the tourney to do it.
MC wnated to get your thoughts on Gary Woodland and the year he is having so far. Watched yesterday at the Farmers and it stunk that he had a bad finish to the round otherwise i think he could have won. Thoughts? Can he content in a Major this year?
Was tough to see him struggle coming down the stretch but I think as the year goes forward... seeing him contend at the PGA this year won't surprise me at all.
Is Foley hurting Tiger more then helping him?
Absolutely not! Watching Tiger hit while Foley is with him and has him dialed in... like fine art. What Tiger than takes to the course... that ain't a Foley issue.
Michael, at the end of last year, it was obvious that Tiger was just burnt out along with his back giving him problems. Isn' it possible that he really didn't prepare for Torrey like usual? It has been rumored that when he starts getting back into things, he shoots rounds in the 80's. Could this just be Tiger pacing himself? Looks like he might take a long break after Dubai this weekend until Honda.
I did a video blog saying I don't care that he shot 79 on Sunday and I won't be worried if he drops an 80 this week in Dubai. I'll get nervous if he drops a 79 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational
You think I will raise the trophy this week? I was runner up here last year.
Nope, sorry. I got Scott Piercy winning
When will we see MC (you) on the grounds for a tournament coming up?
Not til the FL swing unfortunately
What's your opinion on the PGA tour not allowing GPS yardage finders?
eventually they will allow them, the ones without slope and they won't make a difference in the speed of play
With so much talk about pace of play, why not allow the pro's to use lasers too? Seems it could speed up play.
Will only speed up play when guys are WAY offline but from the fairways... won't make a difference
how does CBS/PGA Tour feel about picking up a few of my F bombs yest.....will I be fined?
Yep... you're getting fined BUT that's partly CBS fault. It's not like they don't have an OFF switch and they KNOW you use salty language. They do it on purpose cause it gets people talking.
can players now use yardage finders during the British Open?
No, and they may not use them in qualifiers either. Only in amateur events are they allowed.
I had KJ Choi at 100-1, really wanted a playoff yesterday...
Came close too
Michael, I am a huge Lefty fan. Should I be concerned about this latest back injury as well as the possibility that as he is getting older more and more injuries will bedevil him?
The thing for Lefty (AND Tiger for that manner) is the cross world travel. No matter how nice the private jet is, you're still stuck in a jet for 14 hours. Once you're over 35, you can't get enough water and massage to recover like your body needs. They talk about cutting the schedule, then do stuff like this.
Yo Pat, I feel your pain
will Zach Johnson be the new Jim Furyk....short and straight who sneaks in a few wins each year for the next 6-8?
Go back to Corey Pavin. Jim Furyk. Zach is the next in line.
Are you generally in-favour of the way that Torrey Pines was set-up this past week? Was the rough a bit over-the-top for a January event on an already challenging lay-out?
What you have to remember is the year started last fall. So the guys who didn't play, I have no mercy for. I will say I think the course didn't have to be as hard as it was. It's ok for -14 to win.
Everyone keeps talking how this year sets up perfectly for Tiger and the majors. But correct me if am wrong but he hasn't won a green jacket since they changed the course, Pinehurst has been restored so it's a different golf course, British opens are never the same and didn't Valhalla re-do every green? I'm not saying tiger won't ever get 15 or 19, but as we saw this weekend, you can't judge past success
Great thinking. That why I say Tiger will only win Augusta this year. I truly believe if he hadn't hit the flagstick... he would have won last year.
Who is the golfer that will come out of nowhere and have a huge year?
You only have to send the question once Paul, I see it.If the golfer comes out of nowhere, then it's unpredictable!I am a big fan of Peter Malnati though.
Will we ever see a LPGA Masters at Augusta National?
Not in my lifetime
Going back to the Farmers and all the possible endings that could have happened... What is the procedure for a playoff of - for example - 6 guys on the PGATour? Has there ever been a playoff that big?
Sure and they'll play two threesomes
Ok folks let us review Tiger's off-season: go to France for ski race, chase 4 and 6 year old around. Have GF pull out of olympics, then get surgery. Are we really surprised he didn't play well? (on the other hand he might've been really glad to get to Torrey)
thank you for taking my question.
Well you sent it 47 times and I had to delete 46 of them! ;) You're welcome!
Jason Day seems like a player that should win more.....why hasn't he?
Agreed but as cliche' as it sounds, Day is proof... winning is really hard at this level. All it takes is for a bounce or two every week. I believe Jason will get a few wins on tour soon though.
what do you make of Sergio's comeback win overseas?
I think it bodes well for him when he plays over here this year as well.
Does Lefty defend his title this week at the Waste Management Open if (and that's a big IF) his back doesn't act up?
Nope. But i think he gets a top ten.
If you were watching 2 players hit on the range, one a top 50 ranked player and one on a mini tour...would you notice much difference in the ball striking? I feel the difference is all from 50 yards and in.
On the driving range the difference between a PGA Tour pro and many mini tour pro's is minuscule. The difference is on the course. But plenty of guys on tour now were at one time minitour players
I can tell that the new year (well, not really with the wraparound schedule) is here cause MC is BACK! So, what new gadgets/goodies did you see in Orlando we ought to be looking for in the coming months?
Saw two practice tools (golf balls) that were really cool... and a swing shirt that was creepy looking but really works
What is the stress like as a caddy? Is it mentally taxing?
Only when the guy is playing really bad and nothing you're doing is helping. Then it's taxing. when they're playing good, it's mentally exhausting but in a good way.
MC - How important is this year's masters for tiger's chase of 18.
If he doesn't win, he won't catch Jack.
Most people are chalking up Tiger's play to being rusty. While that may be the case, what are your thoughts on Brandel Chamblee saying his swing is much shorter, stiffer, and looked more like a 50 year old amateurs swing?
Cracks me up... the people who say Brandel hates Tiger. he just wrote this morning that Tiger is one of the 5 best things to happen to the game. Brandel was right and the video backed him up. But I say that was the swing of a guy who just hadn't played in a while. You know the saying, not in game shape... that's Tiger
Tiger needs to fire all his coaches, etc. and just golf for fun. Then he may win?
Foley can get him to a good place swing wise, but guess who ain't on the course with him Thursday-Sunday... his coach.
Great to have you back doing the chat MC. What was the coolest "new thing" you found at the merchandise show?
That PuttUp game is really expensive but REALLY fun, and the new single bag golf cart/skateboard could be a really cool thing at courses.
Hey MC - Hope 2014's treating you well so far. Do you see any Europeans winning a major this year, or will they be happy with just the Ryder Cup again? :)
That's cold blooded Alex! ;) Great to be back. I see a European winning the Open this year but I won't say who yet. Let's get to the Masters and US Open first.
Here is Tiger's finishes by result since he won Masters in 2005- T3, T2, 2, T6, T4, T4, T40, T4...This is a guy who cant win at the Masters since they re-did it? 7 Top 6's in 8 tries? Find me someone with a better track record and consistency at Augusta, I think he plays it just fine and is there another golfer in the world you would bet money on to be there on Sunday at Augusta? Thats what I thought people
Are there any PGA Tour Events that uses the Same Golf Course as the LPGA?
No but this year the USGA is having them play Pinehurst #2 in back to back weeks. Could be awesome, could be a disaster.
Does Phil win a major this year in your opinion?
I'd be lying if I didn't admit I want him to win at Pinehurst this year. Memories of when Payne won, it just seems like a Disney movie, coming full circle like that. But whenever we want something like that so bad, it never happens.
"All predictions come true or your money back."
Sure, and send me $265 per prediction
I thought Jordan had a chance after Friday's round, but maybe the fact that he played the North set my expectations incorrectly. What type of year do you think he'll have?
Early guess for player of the year: Jordan Spieth.
I don't know that he'll win POY but I do think Jordan will contend in a major this year. He'll win one next year
Player most poised for a breakout season?....I like Delaet for a multiple win season
I love the fact that he brought the beard back. He's gonna win once this year but he'll top ten the heck out it too
Hey Michael, if you had a fantasy scenario, which 3 golfers would you have loved to caddy for? And which 1 single event? Thanks!
Augusta - Nicklaus, Pebble Beach - Tiger, third one hasn't happened yet.
Here is another fun stat MC, Tiger has played in 18 majors since he won his last one in 2008 and the scandal happened. How many did he finish in the top 10? 9 of them, with one finish a T11. Man does this guy stink at majors, he is so in his head and should retire!!!!
I'm wanting to take my father to either the U.S. Open at Pinehurst or PGA Championship at Valhalla this year. Which one would you choose if you had to pick one? (He's 64 and never been to a major tournament)
US open at Pinehurst. I loved the Ryder Cup at Valhalla but if you have to pick one... take dad to Pinehurst, and take a day and go play somewhere in the area!
Michael, if you were caddying for Tiger at Augusta this year, what would you be focused on?
MC - is the PGA Merch show as wonderful as I dream it is?
It's like getting the golden ticket to Willy Wonka's factory. Demo Day is sick being able to hit all the new stuff that's not out yet, then the show itself is wall to wall golfers dream and they're all trying to woo you! I now know what Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie felt like when they were single. HAHA
Michelle Wie had a nice first tournament, but that putting style has to go. For people who say they'd rather make putts than worry about how it looks...she doesn't make putts and there is a reason no other professional, or any amateur that I know of, putts like that.
did you forget Robert Garrigus 26" putter? Worked for him for a while.
Which course in major rotations do you like the best when working as a caddy and which do you detest having to walk. I would hate Oakmont the most with the length and having to rake so many bunkers.
honestly there are no bad walks at majors. Even when the guy plays bad, caddying a major is special
@Jeff in Chitown... Missing flagsticks... big focus.
If Tiger does not break Jack's record, will him hitting the flagstick go down as the biggest what if in golfing history?
Good to have you back MC.
great to be back. Didn't know how much I missed y'all til we got going.
Do you think the wrap around schedule will hurt the US Ryder Cup team as many of the top players are a good bit down in the point standings?
Not at all. The best will always rise, and when it's time to throw down, they'll be right there.
Can USA beat Europe this year at the Ryder Cup? And who should we look for to be dominant figures for both teams?
Beating them on their home turf is going to be a gargantuan task. I'm not feeling great about it, but Tom Watson has magic like Ben Crenshaw did.
Wow that went fast! Same time next week everyone!!! Thanks for hanging, have a great week.@ESPNCaddie on TwitterESPNCaddie@gmail.com is the emailYou're caddie, MC
