Too bad there's not much to talk about this week. OK, I'm just joking. Cowboys, Mavs, Pitchers & Catchers, Scott Linehan. Let's do it.
What is your Super Bowl prediction? Seahawks D or Broncos D you trust in last two minutes of game to get a stop or turnover?
Too early for SB prediction, though I'm leaning toward Seattle and its defense. Check back on Twitter - @JJT_ESPNDallas - or Facebook later this week
Who do you think will win Super Bowl XLVIII?
See previous response bro
how do u ask ware 2 take a paycut and give romo 100mil when its been ware thats given u way more n return on ur nvestment over the years. i mean let him test the market and go from there. personally what has romo given the dallas fans or better yet the organization but disapointment and selfish playcalln thats bites he and garrett n the ass everytime? SICK OF THIS GUY
Easy. One has nothing to do with the other. You can moan & groan about Romo as much as you want but he passed for 3,800 yards with 31 TDs and 10 interceptions. $100 million is the going rate for upper-echelon quarterbacks these days. Whether you like him or not, Romo is certainly an upper-echelon quarterback. The price for pass-rushers is dropping. The top pass-rusher after Ware (probably) and Julius Peppers (likely) take pay cuts is about $9 million per year.
Still lacking toughness and a constant scoring threat in the paint, do you see the Mavs going after someone like Paul Milsap before free agency ends? In addition, is it possible to see the line-up of Calderon, Harris, Carter, Dirk, and Wright playing more together in the coming weeks? This combination appears to work very well together.
No. This is not a championship team. Paul Milsap will not make them a championship team. enjoy this season and hope they can build a title contender in the next few years.
How likely do you think the Mavs are to trade for a perimeter defender/quality starting center at the trade deadline?
No. What do the Mavs have of value to trade other than Dirk and Monta? I'm not seeing much. One piece is not going to make them a championship team. I see them making moves in the off-season, but not at the trade deadline. If they do make a move, it's not going to be a huge deal.
With Scott Linehan, another pass happy guy coming to Dallas, will the staff just come up and say: "We're going to be a pass heavy offense?" I'd rather them to just be honest and lose their way rather than tell us they want to be balanced and lose because they ignored their running game at times.
Linehan hasn't run the ball much in Detroit, but Reggie Bush did get 1,000 yards this season and his backup had 600. He's had other 1,000 yard runners in the past. That said, he's still a guy who throws more than he runs
Should Dirk be in the 2014 All-Star game?
yep. He's still one of the best power forwards. I wasn't sure he could still play this well at 35. I hoped he could, but Father Time is undefeated.
knowing how mad he got last time LeBron was a free agent and didn't consider the mavs is Cuban gonna foolishy become hopeful and try to pursue LeBron again ? agree zero chance bron comes to big d?
You have to make the call and check his interest level. And if he wants to have a meeting then you have the meeting. But we all know he's not coming here.
Am I missing something or did the cowboys not finish top 10 in ppg last year. Should they not be focusing on the DC who is calling plays?
Yes, you're missing something. You gotta look beyond the numbers. Dallas finished 5th in the NFL with 27.5 points a game. They got 6 TDs from defense and ST and managed more than 400 yards just three times. If the offense were really good - I'd call it average - then Cowboys would've made the playoffs despite the awful defense. Consider this: The Cowboys' offense got the ball on opponents side of the 50 yard line 21 times. Four times it was essentially the end of the game or the half. The Cowboys scored just 7 touchdowns on those other 17 possessions.
So let me get this straight .. the brilliant Jerry Jones hires an offensive coordinator to call the plays for Garrett's offensive system? WTH is wrong with this organization? Neither Bill or Scott have the freedom to implement their own offense. I guess that's why Jerry calls it an offensive playcaller because that's all their allowed to do is call the plays of an existing system. Unbelievable.
This was a Garrett hire, but that's a good question. Garrett trusts Linehan, so he might let him bring his playbook
Can the cowboys make enough defensive changes/adjustments in the 2014 season to put themselves in a position to make the playoffs?
Love your passion, but too early for that. We have no idea who they add in free agency or the draft. We don't even know who's calling the defensive signals
Tony Romo is no longer a spring chicken. With his latest surgery, and the fact that Dallas seems to find thelmselves in the middle of the draft due to their average seasons the past few years, will Dallas draft a replacement for Romo at some point? If so, would they be forced to trade up to get a projectable young quarterback, or would they sign an undrafted project such as Romo?
No. The reality of today's NFL is you find starters in the first 3 rounds of the draft. 30 of 32 starters were taken in 1st three rounds. They aren't using that high of a pick on a quarterback until Romo is gone
What's good JJT? What is the deal with the newest coach hired? What does this mean for Callahan? Dallas seems to be in free fall at this time.
Callahan will either stay in charge of the run game and the offensive line. Or, maybe, he'll go tot Cleveland and be the OC. Linehan has been a pretty good OC. He likes to throw the ball.
Would Carmelo Anthony be a nice fit at SF for the Mavs?
He's a great scorer, so I guess. But he wants to win a title. he's not coming here. Not enough other pieces.
Could having Brent, Crawford, Bass, all back and adding a #1 at d-line give this group a chance to make major improvements?
I don't think Brent is playing this year. I think Goodell will give him a year.
Is Garrett forcing Cahallan to quit but hiring linehan?
Callahan can still coach the offensive line
Why don't the Cowboys part ways with Miles Austin? He just counts against the cap but can't stay on the field. Plus, they have depth with Terrence Williams, Cole Beasely, and Dwayne Harris and they drafted Gavin Escobar high last year, a pass catching tight end. And of course Witten and Bryant and Murray and Dunbar out of the backfield. Thats a loaded offense so WHY keep him with that contract??
He's a June 1 cut because of salary cap issues. Check back if he's still on the roster after that.
Why are there changes on the offensive coaching staff but there's none on the worst defense in nfl? are garretts priority off?
You have 5-6 months in the off-season to make changes. There's no particular order they have to made in. This is start of offseason. A long way to go
If brent out of jail by june, will jerry bring him back to help him get back on his feet?
He still has to deal with the commissioner's punishment. I expect a year, which means he will have missed 2.25 seasons by the time he's eligible
Would you prefer a true free safety for this team or a true 3 technique? in other word earl thomas type or a suh type
the best player. All things equal, I'll take a defensive lineman.
Whats your thoughts on unknown player on defense saying the cowboys was the worst film watching team that he had ever been on?
yawn. Put your name behind it. Or speak up at the time to your teammates. Otherwise, shut up.
Is Manning the greatest quarterback ever if he wins sunday?
I don't like the premise of that question. It reminds me whether Jerry should fire Garrett if they don't beat Philly and make the playoffs. One game should never determine a coach's fate or a player's legacy. You either fire the coach or keep him based on whether you believe he's the reason the team is losing. No, I don't think this game defines Peyton's legacy. I would say how can you be best of all-time, when Brady is the best of his generation?
Why isn't dallas a more glamourous location for free agency in the NBA anymore?
Players go where they get the most money. Period.
You taking a healthy revis or sherman?
Sherman. I like the loud way he plays. Then again, I liked the way Michael Irvin played.
Do you think the acquistion of Scott Linehan as OC/passing game coordinator teaming with Bill Callahan as running game coordinator will bring the same results as the 2007 team on the offensive side?
I wouldn't say that if for no other reason than I wouldn't expect Romo and Witten to be better in 2014 than they were in 2007
Why did dallas advise Josh Brent to retire and do you think he plays in the league again?
The Cowboys didn't advise Brent to retire. He had bigger issues than playing football. His life needed his undivided attention.
On NFL.com spencer was named as one of the top 25 free agents. do you think the cowboys can get him on the cheap since there open to bringing him back
It's all about whether Spencer wants to play for a modest contract with incentives. Like all free agents, expect him to follow the money
Is the Sean Lee neck injury career threatening for the Cowboys?
I don't think so based on what I've heard.
are the maverics going to keep on playing larkin
I would imagine his playing time gets cuts because Calderon is playing well and Harris is playing well. The position only has 48 minutes, and the Cowboys need to win games.
when stephen jones wil be the GM, do you think he will do the same stupid desitions like is father, he could be a better GM ?
Stephen is a big part of all the decisions being made right now. I don't know how much will change whenever he takes over.
Fascinated by this playcalling ordeal the two offseasons. How and why did it come to this?
That really requires more space and time than I have during a chat. I've got a column about some of this tomorrow
Why is the NFL hypocritical when it comes to safety of there players? They emphasis prevention when it comes to concussions, but they care not about there safety in sub below temperatures. Is it going to take a player dying before they address this?
I haven't seen or read anything that says cold causes players injury
With the hiring of Linehan, do you think the Cowboys maybe have too many people on the offensive side of the ball who want to call plays? Its just seems like they are muddying up the water with this hire.
What they need to do is boot Romo from the mix. Linehan will call plays. Others might help put game plan together.
JJT, how do the Cowboys fix their salary cap problems. I believe the their cap problems are the biggest challenge they will face in 2014.
They view 2015 as the year they'll have more flexibility. The reality is they're probably going to be tight until Romo retires and his money comes off the books
Is there any specific reason why Jerry thinks it's brilliant to bring in guys (Scott/Bill) who can't even run their own offense but instead he brings them in to run Garrett's offense? How does this organization make sense of this? Hiring a guy to call another guy's plays? C'mon man.
This was a Garrett move - not a Jerry decision. All he did was approve it
JJT, do you expect BW Webb to improve? or does this team no longer know how to evaluate corners? look at Claiborne.
Most players make their most improvement between season 1 and 2. We can only hope it goes better. He looked overmatched last season
With Prince and Shin coming to the Rangers there is a lot of optimism about the lineup improving. One person lost in this a little is Profar. Will the addition of some big name guys that take pressure and attention off of him and an everyday spot at 2B bring about some of the potential we have been waiting to see?
It should help Profar because there should be no pressure on him. He'll be in the lineup every day and he'll hit at the bottom of the lineup
JJT, at the moment, how would you weigh the odds percentage-wise of Callahan sticking around to run the O-Line vs. pursuing another opportunity?
82.3 percent he'll try to leave. 50 percent he does leave. You know he is under contract
do you see Kiffin being here as DC next season?
Yes, but that doesn't mean he's in charge of the defense. Someone else could be calling the signals
The cowboys were great in the redzone for the first time in a longtime. Why change callahan if he made progress
Overall, the offense was average at best. Romo averaged career low in yards per attempt. The offense wasn't dynamic except against Denver.
How does a team like Dallas develop the intensity and physicality of the 49ers', Panthers or Seahawks. Dallas intimidates no one.
you add those players to the roster in the draft and free agency. It's about adding dudes with a certain type of mentality to your roster. Garrett talks quite a bit about adding the right kind of guys. That's what he's talking about
do you know where dallas offense rank this year in comparison to when garret called plays? thanks
go to www.profootball-reference.com and you can find it pretty easily
How much would it cost to buy the team from Jerry? I bet if Cowboy fans pooled their money we can raise enough to purchase the team.
it's not for a sale. even if you could raise $1.5 billion, he wouldn't take it
Does Jerry realize that people have been born, gone to high school and applied to college since the last time they saw real success in Dallas? Should fans go the billboard route to force change in this town?
You can't force change. It's like trying to get someone to work out or quit smoking. They must decided for themselves to make change
Does Cllahan stick around or go now the Linehan has been hired?
I suppose he'll try to leave. He's under contract so we don't know how that will work out just yet
JJT do the Rangers win the West with Holland out till ASB?
I think he's going to be out a lot longer than that. I don't expect him to pitch this year. Yes, the Rangers can still win the West, but they're going to need another starter to win a title.
great chat today. Looking forward to it again next week.
