Keep sending questions, I'll get started in five minutes or so...
Ok, let's get started
Predictions on Longhorns starting QB? (please say swoopes)
I don't know. I think Heard is the best of the bunch and expect him eventually to take over. He is the future at the position in Austin in my opinion.
Will the Longhorns finish with a top 10 recruiting class?
I'm going to say yes. Will that matter? We'll see.
Brandon....couldn't get Jake to answer this yesterday....what's the status of Brandon Phillips? My buddy says his career may be over....say it ain't so.
I don't know who that is.
I know that you and trotter have said you don't see Big12 expansion any time soon. But if it were to happen, who would you say are the best 2 teams the big12 could actually get to join?
I like UCF and maybe BYU, Cincinnati or the like. It will have to be a team that opens up new markets. Not just adding a school just to do it.
How many corny dogs should I eat at the State Fair of Texas during my first Red River Rivalry experience?
If you win, 3. If you lose, you go hungry. Sorry Charlie
Over/Under 10.5 wins next year for Oklahoma?
I'll say over
How much should I be worried that Joe Wickline will call the plays instead of S.Watson? Wickline hasn't called a play in almost 30 yrs...
Not at all. Wickline is better prepared than some people think he is. That was a devastating blow for OSU, most people don't recognize that yet.
Who do you think will win Super Bowl XLVIII?
As a Broncos fan, I'm not picking against my team. What kind of fan would I be?
Thoughts on Iowa State's recruiting? Mainly verbal of Michael Warren?
I think they have some solid commits including Warren and Lazard. I really like Warren's feet and vision.
I've seen questions on her before about expansion of Big12. I'd like to see a 2 team expansion and attempt to bring in BYU and Notre Dame. I know it sounds a little silly but this could benefit all involved. Money is there for all, opens new markets for Big12 as well as ND & BYU. And who in the Big12 is opposed to good competition? A strong conference in my humble opinion only makes one stronger. BOOMER!
I don't know that those two schools would jump on the chance. It would be worth asking but don't hold your breath on that one.
What positions does Kansas State need to bolster to improve on their 2013 record?
More overall speed on defense immediately comes to mind.
So I was scanning the top 25 players in the Big 12 and it shows two wide receivers(Saunders, Lockett) ahead of the number one receiver in the league(Goodley). Why?
For me it's about special teams and impact on the offense as a whole. Both of those two guys get the nod over Goodley in those categories.
I will take a guess and say there will at least be one or two more RB's on the list of top 25 players in the Big 12. Why would they be in front of the top RB in the conference? Seastrunk led the conference in almost every category.
I don't know why you would think that, you know what they say about assumptions.
Brrrrrrr! Winter storm Leon has left me stranded in my own home. Unusual circumstances in this region of the country, but I'm warm and cozy with a Orange Bowl win and a stellar recruiting class that ranks higher than everyone in the Big 12. Is this a fluke or a sign of things to come? Has the ACC finally risen to power as the conference to beat?
I don't think so Dabo. But I'd love for you to talk like it is, you speak golden nuggets my friend.
What are your thoughts on I-State with the hire of Mangino and the new RB coach? Also what can you tell me about RB from Oklahoma, Michael Warren? Sounds like a really good pick up for Iowa State
I think Mangino will bring more of a running mindset to Iowa State, which I think they need. Ultimately we will see what happens. And I like the RB coach hire, Ayeni seems like a solid recruiter and evaluator
Brandon, is your counterpart insane? Did he watch any Big 12 football in 2013?? K-State and TCU played right down to the wire in November. It took a game winning field goal from yours truly in the final seconds to end it, yet J-Trott failed to even mention it! What were the implications? Both teams needed a win to stay in the hunt for bowl eligibility. This wasn't the only good game IN the conference in 2013. Plenty of others were left out. What gives?
Not sure what you're this fired up about... lots of good games in the Big 12, not every single one made it.
Any predictions on who the best freshman will be next year in the Big 12?
Ask me in two weeks, you know when guys have actually signed.... but assuming there are no major changes, Joe Mixon at OU, KD Cannon at Baylor and Allen Lazard at ISU immediately come to mind... but, like I said, keep an eye on the blog, we'll address this once guys have actually signed.
Brandon there is talk back here in West Virginia that WVU is unhappy with the Big 12. There has been no effort to enlist a couple of teams east of the Mississippi. The Big 12 apparently pledged to have this done by 2014 when they invited the Mountaineers to join. This would alleviate some of the travel woes like the WVU basketball team experienced this past week. Now that Deloss Dodds is gone do you see this as a real possibility going forward ?
I do but not anytime soon. Is WVU unhappy enough to add more mouths to feed when they're trying to build new facilities? Seems unwise to me...
What have you heard about Blake Bell's status with Trevor Knight earning the starting QB position from his great Sugar Bowl game?
I think he'll play tight end
RJ may have meant Jordan Phillips who had surgery
I know, just giving RJ a hard time on that one... I'd say anytime you're dealing with a back injury, it's shaky. I wouldn't plan to have him back and playing at a higher level than Jordan Wade. I'd approach it as if he does, then we have our cake and eat it too
What do you think of the union talk?
Good question John. I think it's all kinds of interesting. Everyone can see where this is heading, it's going to reach a point of climax at some point, it's just interesting to see what will be the tipping point. Will it be this? The other thing is, unless I'm mistaken, they aren't even looking to get paid, just get insurance and scholarship protection, yet you saw how some people reacted. Like I said, it's going to be interesting to watch it all unfold.
If you had to choose one big 12 team to starta a dynasty with in Ncaa 14, who would it be?
Baylor. The Bears just have too much fun in real life, so I'd want to be a part of that.
Where, if at all, do you see Eric Ward going in this years draft?
I think he's a Day 3 guy, maybe undrafted. If he falls enough, he should want to go undrafted so he can pick a good fit
A ton of tough big 12 non conference games next year. I like Kansas State over Auburn at home. What big wins can you see the big 12 picking up?
Way to early to predict. A lot of games I'm looking forward to and K-State vs Auburn might top the list.
Can WVU reach 8 wins this year?
If they find a quarterback, I see no reason they can't.
what's up BC, just wondering what my chances are of maybe getting a little Heisman buzz next year?
What's up Tyler. It will take a Big 12 and national title-type run. And you'll have to increase your level of play. You can do it, but it will be tough.
Where would you rank 2013 among Bob Stoops' coaching jobs during his tenure at OU?
Top 3, easily. Could be No. 1
Do you think Duane Akina is excited to see 3 outstanding DB's he coached in the Super Bowl or more upset at the fact he was canned after coaching up that talent?
He should be excited. Nobody can take that off the resume.
Do you think the Big 12 will get back to the days of being the championship game (I guess playoffs now) like they did the from the late 90s to 2009?
Not anytime soon. I don't think there is any hurry to have another Big 12 championship game
Who do you think will teh player that is drafted the highest out of the Big 12?
Which team could you see taking the biggest jump and biggest fall in the standing next year? Iowa State is my pick for jump and Baylor for fall...
I'm going TCU to make a jump, Oklahoma State to take a step backward (mainly because of Wickline, loss of seniors on D). I could also see WVU making a jump. I don't see any type of Baylor slide coming.
Everyone, including you and Jake, say Texas has all that talent yet just aren't coached to their potential. Texas was one half away from winning the Big 12. How is the only player so far to crack the Big 12 Top 25, just Fera? (I know Jeffcoat's coming)
Because there's a difference between being talented and being skilled.
In other words, talented means nothing if you aren't skilled. Production matters.
With a few key departures on D (Lynn, Colvin, Nelson), do you think Oklahoma takes a step back defensively from how they produced last year or do you think the young talent could make next years Defense even tougher? Also, what was with them giving up so many big plays last year?
No I think they take a step forward. As far as the big plays, you must have unreal expectations. OU's defense was pretty good in that regard this season.
If you can coach at any school in the country, what school would it be and why?
Good question Ben. Probably USC, lots of reasons to want to be the man in LA.
Brandon, is it safe to say that rumors of my demise were greatly exaggerated?
Yes Rick, between you and Lon. My preseason thoughts on the Big 12 are waaayyyy off. It's been fun to watch though.
Every time I hear something about WVU it seems it is the loss of Simms, have you guys forgotten former 5 star Russell Shell will be elgible this coming year after transferring from Pitt?
It has more to do with the fact Sims WAS the Mountaineers offense than anything. I don't consider him irreplaceable by any stretch. We'll see how Shell and company do. Finding a quarterback is priority No. 1 though.
who will be the QB for WV next year
Ask me again after spring football, they have 7 months to get better. That's a lot of time, Jesse.
Let's say Mack Brown answered Jameis Winston's calls during recruiting. How far would Jameis have taken the Longhorns this last season?
If Jameis Winston was somehow the Longhorns quarterback last year, the sky would have been the limit. He brings much more to the table than what you see between the lines.
Brandon, Auburn vs. KSU in an early season matchup. Thoughts?
I like Auburn to win, but expect it to be a good game. But, again, it early to say things like that. We don't even know who is going to be on those teams in seven months.
Which receiving corps look the best for next year?
I like Baylor's group. Goodley, Coleman, Rhodes and some talented newcomers. More importantly Petty will be a the helm. Because, honestly, some teams had receivers just out there running routes last year.
Hey Brandon (no nicknames this week), honestly I think we are starting to miss Mr. February a little bit, but I saw someone comment on Trotter's chat saying, it wasn't recruiting that was Mac's problem but coaching. So are the days of Texas fans googling over how many stars are in the recruiting classes over with? And will Charlie Strong start taking more of the underrated recruits that he believes will develop into the type of players needed to fit his system? (I mean of course we would take championship titles over recruiting titles, but man it sure was fun when Mack was here)
No nicknames? Boo!... I think so. And that's the way to go. I think UT's biggest weakness in the past few years has been evaluation and development. You have to build a team, not just recruit bunch of great players. It's about... how they fit in your system? What role they can excel in? have they maximized their ability in HS? Those are the important questions. Not how many stars is he or who else wants him. And I get the impression Strong is more concerned about those questions than star ranking.
Has Lon Kruger turned the corner and returned the Sooners to annual conference contender and NCAA tournament participant?
Yes. Lon Kruger can coach folks... but we knew that already.
With Ford being a soph and Mixon coming in, do you seen any role for Alex Ross?
Not unless his mental approach changes.
What's your take on Texas Tech's 2014 recruiting class so far?
I really like Daniels and Stockton. Overall I think TTU is doing a pretty solid job, I think they will be on the rise under Kliff. He gets it.
Which OU defensive end do you predict will garner First Team all conference honors, Grissom or Tapper?
Thoughts on the devonte fields situation?
Very, very odd. We'll see how it plays out.
Now that im starting to cut down turnovers and sling the ball around, could I be on your all BIG 12 team next year?
Absolutely. You could easily be the guy but you'll have to lead a run to a Big 12 title, which probably means a win at Baylor. So, really, it's up to you Jake.
Almost as puzzling as UT's inability to develop an elite quarterback in the most-talent rich signal-caller state is their failure to develop a decent tight end despite throwing seemingly everyone against the wall for how many years now... is this finally the year?
I think that's near the bottom of the list of priorities. That seems like a goal in year 2 or 3 of the Strong era, once a offensive identity and quarterback are in place.
Do you think Sumlin will be as successful as Briles in keeping up the winning after the departure of an elite QB?
Yes. The man is doing work on the recruiting trail. And players seem to love playing for him.
one more question
If Mizzou and TAMU are in B12 last season instead of WVU and TCU, where does each finish?
Good question Alex. I'll say easily top half for both, higher than TCU or WVU did. I don't automatically slide them above Baylor, OU or OSU but I think they would be right in the mix with those teams with Mizzou's DL and Manziel providing the X factors that could have won the Big 12 for either team. But it would have been a battle between all of those teams for sure.
Thanks everyone, have a great day. Let's go Broncos! :)
