Welcome everyone, good to be back with the chat, let's get started.
Who will USC Replace in the Fall for the Players who are Selected in the 2014 NFL Draft?
I see Darreus Rogers stepping in to Marqise Lee's open spot. Su'a Cravens and Leon McQuay could help fill Dion Bailey loss. Khaliel Rodgers and Toa Lobendahn are two guys who could get first look at center to replace Marcus Martin. It could be any one of 4 guys to step in for George Uko - Delvon Simmons, Claudeson Pelon, Antwaun Woods or Kenny Bigelow. Those are some of the top names.
Hi Garry. Do you think the 2014 class resolve some concerns for the team in terms of CB, DL, and LB depth? And, should A. Jackson wear #5 in your own opinion?
I do think needs were filled well at CB and DL. You can't underestimate getting a guy like Adoree' at corner, they just don't come along too often. Linebacker was good but next year could be a step up with USC leans such as Cameron Smith and John Houston. I've gone back and forth with mixed feelings on the issue of #5, at this point I say let him wear it.
What was the most memorable USC game you watched during the Pete Carroll era?
The most memorable game was probably the Orange Bowl against Oklahoma. The Sooners came into the game as a very good team, favored in fact. Didn't turn out that way. Most memorable moment would be 4th and 9 followed by Bush Push. You simply can't beat the excitement of that series of events.
Who is Mount Rushmore of Trojan Football?
We asked this question last year as a part of a story on ESPN.com. It ended up being John McKay, Pete Carroll, Marcus Allen and Ronnie Lott. it's amazing to think of the names that are left off but you also have a hard time taking off any one of those four.
Garry, other than Ricky Town and Iman Marshall, can you name 3 guys that are MUST get for USC?
I'll stick on defense with names like Marvell Tell, Rasheem Green John Houston, plus I will throw in Cameron Smith as well.
Garry, I am finally eager to see this new Trojan D. We are stocked with talented shut down Corners, hard hitting/ball hawking safties a D line that features an All-American talent that strikes fear. I think we will finally start winning games based on what are D can do and not put it all on the offense. Fun times ahead of us in the land of Troy. FIGHT ON!
I'm eager to see the defense as well. I thought the SC defense played well last year, particularly in the latter half of the year, and the #1 conference ranking certainly reflected that. I doubt we'll see much tweaking from Wilcox and company because there are an awful lot of pieces in place, led by that d-line you mentioned and a heck of a leader in the middle with Pullard. I'm in a little bit of a wait-and-see mode at corner although I'm optimistic about both returning starters and the addition of the freshmen.
Garry, who are the big time recruits in the class of 2015 that USC really wants to land and we should be paying attention to? It's hard seeing schools like Tennessee seemingly have half of their class locked down already when the only name we're really hearing is Ricky Town.
I wouldn't be worried at this point at all. Sark is doing a real good job of laying the groundwork for the upcoming class with the two verbals and a solid Elite Junior Day a few weeks ago. There is a lot of buzz right now surrounding the SC recruiting efforts and it's a good year for Sark to have the additional 10 rides to play with. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think defense will be a big emphasis, especially with in-state guys like Biggie, Tell, Green, Houston. Jacob Daniel and Smith.
Garry,I just heard an update today that the briefs in the Todd McNair case have been submitted to the appeals court by both sides. If McNair were to win his trial (that's a big if) do you think the NCAA will restore the wins, the national championship and Reggie's Heisman?
No, I don't think the NCAA would restore anything if McNair were to win the trial. In their minds, one would have nothing to do with the other, However, I still don't think it ever gets to the point of a finished trial. My thought, and the thought of many others, is still that the NCAA will settle long before any damaging info can come out.
It appears that USC is in good hands at the QB position for the next 6 years with Kessler, Browne, and Town. How do you forsee that competition shaking out? Will each get their shot to start for a couple years?
I agree. It kind of feels like that stretch when the Trojans had Palmer, Cassel and Leinart stacked up, with Billy Hart as well (I guess that means don't forget Jalen Greene). I think there will be a real good battle this spring and fall but it would surprise me if Kessler doesn't hold on to the job, which means Browne could end up waiting longer than expected to get the starting job, much like Sanchez had to wait behind Booty. And with Town coming in after that, along with continued full recruiting classes now that the scholarship sanctions are over, the Trojans could be looking at a very bright offensive future.
USC has three tough games this season. If we take care of business at the farm against Stanford week 2 do you think we can sneak into the 4 team playoff?
it's always possible but I'm not looking that far ahead right now. And I would sure like the chances a lot better if so many draft eligible juniors had not declared.
Garry,Do you think CSS is aware of the the lack of tackling in spring and the subsequent poor seasons we had under the previous regime? If so how do you see him doing things differently so a repeat doesn't happen? I understand the injury concerns but I believe we have had just as many significant injuries during practice (i.e. Tre Madden) as we have had during game play.
Sure he understands it. Sark gave a real good and lengthy response on the subject in a recent Q&A with ESPN Pac-12 blogger Ted Miller. It's a response that indicates he is leaning toward reduced tackling in practices and he gives pointed reasons for his thoughts.
What can fans do to voice their displeasure over the proposed 10 second rule change?
i don't think there is much the fans need to do at this point because a lot of coaches and media members have complained loudly enough that there's a real chance to rule won't get passed.
Two Questions: What does Max Browne have to do to get the starting job? Second, if Browne gets the job what should we expect from him?
Tarik - it's an uphill battle for Max to go against the incumbent starter, especially one who played well, but Max is a real talent and Sark is going to give him a legit look. i think the best thing he can do in spring is to do enough to keep the competition open until fall. At that point he could really show enough command of the new offense to make his claim. With Max you are getting a tall QB with good accuracy and the ability to move well within the pocket. He's not an incredibly mobile guy but he does enough (think Peyton Manning). He also has that "it" factor you want in a quarterback.
If Adoree and JuJu both play defense, do you think that this defense can be as good as Florida State?
This has a chance to be a very good defense but we haven't seen them on the field yet so it's hard to know how good. The coaches don't even know where they are going to line everybody up yet so spring will be a chance to figure a lot of that stuff out. It sounds like Adoree' will begin on defense but JuJu will be on offense, I would put JuJu on defense too if it was my choice but he's a real good receiver too so we'll see what happens.
Do you see a RB by committee approach or a main guy? Alabama does well using two or three
I'm always a fan of having a main guy but that could easily be because of early USC memories of tailbacks like Charles White and Marcus Allen. Sark has also shown in his time at UW that he is not afraid to go with a main guy approach, as he had no problem riding horses like Chris Polk and Bishop Sankey. But with this current SC group, I would have no problem using a rotation. I just don't see how you pick one and sit all the others. I know some people will say it's a good problem to have but it also needs to be managed properly with the players involved if that's the way Sark chooses to go.
How do you see George farmers progress and future after his injuries. Do you belive he is done of can be as good as new ?
What is your thought of what position Adoree Jackson actually lands at?
Darreus Rogers showed flashed of brilliance last year despite playing through injury. Will he combine with Agholor to become the top receiving duo in the PAC-12?
(sorry technical issues)They can certainly be one of the better duos. It will be interesting to see how Sark uses Rogers because he likes the bigger receivers, as he showed in his time at UW.
(response to Travis)I'm as anxious to see George Farmer as any player on the team. He was really having a good spring last year before getting hurt but i've been impressed by his attitude during his rehab.
(Scott Wingate)Sark said last week that Adoree' will begin his career at corner. I think that's a good choice.
Who plays the hybrid DE/OLB in the Trojans 3-4/4-3 defense?
We don't know for sure yet but the list of candidates will include names like J.R. Tavai, Jabari Ruffin, Scott Starr and Quinton Powell.
I've always heard the impact of the sanctions will be felt the most in 2014 and 2015 so the worst is yet to come. Do you think this is true despite our strong recruiting class?
No, I do not think the worst is yet to come. The Trojans added 19 bodies this recruiting cycle and will get 25 next year. That's a nice base of 44 new bodies as a foundation over this two-year stretch.
Where is Morgan Breslin projected to go in the draft?
I thought it was a huge shock that Breslin didn't get invited to the combine. That's not a good sign for his draft prospects so at this point he is probably looking late round or free agent. This is a player who has a unique skill (rushing the passer) that the NFL would seem to covet. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Garry, can you show me some love, since no one else will? I should be coaching somewhere, right?
Very surprising that nobody has hired you Clancy. What you did with the USC defense last year is called coaching. You were bought in to help the defense make a quick turnaround and they ended up being ranked #1 in the conference in the first year.
Since you have been following USC who is the best true freshman USC has had?
Good question. There have been some good ones but it's hard to imagine anyone coming in and doing more than Mike Williams. He struggled for a few games but then once it came together for him, he was lights out. Not only was he good but he brought a swagger to the program and became the go-to guy for Carson on the road to the Orange Bowl.
Does Randall Telfer have an All PAC-12 season under Steve Sarkisian?
Sure, if he can stay healthy. I think that's the main thing for Randall.
If you had to pick one current and former player to fight for your life who would it be?
Current player i will say Max Tuerk, in large part because of what his HS offensive line coach once told me, "Max would drive block his mother into the ground if she was lined up across from him". As far as a former player, I'll say Brian Cushing in a street fight or Gerald Washington (12-0 record as a heavyweight boxer).
How excited are you to finally have a full allotment of recruits in the upcoming class?
Huge. it will seem like such a huge class after the restrictions the Trojans have been under for the past three years.
Thanks everyone for coming, that's all the time we have for today. See you next week.
