We've got Mel!
Whose combine workout are you most wanting to see?
I would say right now it would be these players: Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida; De'Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon; Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU; Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss; Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame; Dee Ford, OLB, Auburn; Kendall James, CB, Maine; Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State.
Mel Kiper. Who is the best Division 1 AA player in this years 2014 NFL Draft?
Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois is the top offensive guy. The top defensive guy is Jordan Tripp, OLB, Montana.
Do you think a team can work with Logan Thomas and turn him into a nfl quarterback, because he has all the physical tools?
Yeah, he's just not accurate and makes bad decisions. It's very questionable on whether he could be a starting QB. I think he could go third round as a QB. Ultimately, I think he's a TE.
Is oakland at 5 to high to take cj mosley?
Yeah. That would be too high. He's the kind of LB that is tremendous in coverage. He's a great tackler, but he's not the sack artist. He'll be a 4-3 OLB type. I think he's a top 15, maybe top 10, but not top 5. Right now, he's 13 on the Big Board.
hi mel could u see the jets drafting pryor the safety out of louisville if the 3 top wrs are gone?
No. I would say they would then look at Eric Ebron at TE. That would be assuming the top 3 WRs are gone. Even if the top 3 WRs are gone, they could still take Odell Beckham.
They have to get better on offense. They can't take defense. They need help on offense. They need it in the first round.
Better prospect will sutton or aaron donald?
I'll tell you what, right now, I'll say Aaron Donald. Last year I would have said Will Sutton. His weight is up, his quickness is down and his production is down. Donald is the third highest rated at his position and Sutton is sixth highest.
I think the Steelers will take a receiver in the first round. Which receiver do you think would be the best fit for them in round one?
If they took a WR where they are in the draft, they could look at Mike Evans or Marqise Lee. Those would be the possibilities there.
Which receiver has the best ball skills?
No question Mike Evans. He has the best ball skills of any WR to come out in the last 20 years. He's right there with Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was the best I'd seen and he's right there.
Mel, Eric Decker has had two great seasons in Denver (granted with Peyton Manning as QB). Why did he last so long in the draft? What was the knock on him coming out of college?
There weren't a lot of knocks. Guys slide. I gave him a second round grade. What hurt him for the draft was his senior season was cut short by a foot injury in late October. Had he played a full season and not been injured, he could have been no later than a second round pick. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and the Minnesota Twins. He's 6-3, 215. He has great hand-eye coordination. I said at the time that he plays the game with a lot of energy. He caught a ton of balls at Minnesota.
As a junior, he caught 84 passes.
I love the fit of Jernigan to the Bears, but what if he's not available? There really doesn't seem to be a DE that would fit for us at 14. Would they go with a CB or safety there? Or would they shock everyone and take Marquise Lee to fill the slot and make that offense even more dynamic?
Yeah, I would think they would look at CB like Gilbert or Dennard. Or they could look at Pryor at safety. The other option would be Clinton-Dix at safety. Those are the four options there.
Mel..who do you see as being the biggest riser from the combine..into the top 10?
Dri Archer, RB/WR, Kent State; Martavis Bryant, WR, Clemson; Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois; Ra'shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota; Carl Bradford, OLB, Arizona State; Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida.
One guy that could be a combine workout freak is Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo. And Mike Evans, WR, TAMU, could be a big riser if he runs well. Cryus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama is one more.
What are the Lions going to do at the #10 spot? CB or WR?
There are two need areas. The critical need areas are CB or WR. That's where you get down to Justin Gilbert or Dennard or do you take a Mike Evans? Or Marqise Lee? That's the determination there.
Another possibility would be Eric Ebron at TE. Brandon Pettigrew is a free agent.
Is Sammy Watkins anywhere near Julio and AJ when they were coming out?
He's close. I don't put him quite as high. He's close. He's fifth on the Big Board. He had a heckuva year at Clemson. He will drop a catchable ball now and then, more ofr concentration reasons. Not as high as those two, but close. I think he goes in the top 5 overall.
Is Marcus Martin more of a center or guard
He'll play either. He's a center who will play guard and can play either spot. It wouldn't shock me if he went late first, but I think early or mid second round. He's got versatility. He'd be a great pick for the Colts. He can be a pro bowler at either spot.
If you were sitting at 4, would u trade up or pick who ever falls to you? QB, Clouny, Wakins...thanks
First of all, this is an ever changing organization. You have to see, first of all, Brian Hoyer. What's his status? Which QB does Kyle Shanahan at OC like the best? You could draft another QB. You could draft Sammy Watkins first then take a QB next. I would take the QB if I felt there was one high enough on the board and worthy enough of the fourth pick. You're in a division with three other good QBs. You can't be a distant fourth at QB.
Do the Bills draft weapons for their young QB or continue to build on D?
They have to keep helping the QB. You have an OL issue. You could look there at Matthews or Lewan. You could look at WR like Mike Evans or Marqise Lee. Eric Ebron at TE. I wouldn't look defense.
Where do you rank the gaurd prospects in this year's draft compared to Cooper and Warmack from last year?
They're down just a little bit, but there are a couple of pro bowl caliber guys. Yanke, Thomas, Su'a-Filo. There is depth too. Jon Halapio could be had in the fourth round. Urschel, Watt. There are real good fourth to sixth round guards.
Marcus Martin played center and guard at USC could also be a pro bowl caliber guard if you wanted to play him there rather than center.
Mel, is Trent Murphy is versatile enough to be an every down 3-4 OLB, or do you think he's too limited in space?
I think that's what he is. That's what his role will be. I don't think he's a 4-3 DE. He's a hustler. He'll get you coverage sacks. He'll cover the edge. He's a third round pick. Maybe a second.
Do you think Lovie was serious when he said the Bucs could draft a QB at 7, or do you think he's just covering all his bases?
You have Mike Glennon. He inherited him. It depends on how they feel about Glennon. They could say they like him but they don't want to put all their eggs in one basket. Do you pick another one early? Which one of the top guys do they like the most? They're not going to like all three. I could see them taking a DL. I don't think it will be a QB.
Mel great work as always, should Denver go LB or CB/S with the first overall pick, and what players do you think might fit best at those positions of need. I like Shazier the LB Ohio St, do you think he can play MLB?
I think they have to go CB or S. MLB is a need, but DB is a pressing need. Bradley Roby, OSU is a possibility. Jimmie Ward is very underrated. Great cover safety. I think he's deserving of being a late first.
Which quality receivers should be available to the Seahawks at the end of the first round?
You could look there at 3-4 different guys. Brandin Cooks, Oregon State; Jarvis Landry, LSU; Kelvin Benjamin, FSU; Alan Robinson, PSU; a lot of different options. There are a lot of teams looking for WR. Once you get into the 20s, Philly, KC, Cleveland, Carolina, New England, San Francisco, Seattle, could all be looking WR.
Mel, where do you think Geno Smith would have ranked in this years QB class?
I think he would have been the fourth highest rated QB.
Bridgewater, Bortles and Manziel would have all been ahead of him.
Do you project any trades with in the first 10 picks?
That's hard to say before free agency. I think that will tell us a lot. How many teams fill needs through free agency. The players teams could move up for are Jadeveon Clowney, Khalil Mack, Eric Ebron, Mike Evans. Then we have to wait and see how the QBs test out. How they do at the combine and pro day. If a team likes one a lot more than the others, they might move up. Clowney would make a lot of sense for a team like Atlanta.
When do the Titans take a QB and who could it possibly be?
I think they're a team that looks QB down the line. They have one more year with Jake Locker then next year, they look for one. Zach Mettenberger, Jimmy Garoppolo, Logan Thomas are some guys they could look at in the 3-5 round area.
Hi Mel - can Andre Williams improve his stock at the combine and sneak into the 3-4 round range? Are any other Boston College players draftable? Thanks
It's about his speed. He's the 9 or 10 ranked RB right now. If that's the case, you might not have any go in the first round, a couple in the second, then a bunch in the 3-4 round area. He could go as high as the third round, maybe fourth. So the 3-5 round for him.
How does the Ray Rice situation impact Ozzie's view on the draft?
It certainly could. RB is not a big need area for this team. They have big needs at WR, TE. Huge need at OL. They could use a FS. When they get to Day 3 they could look RB. Ka'Deem Carey, Arizona; Bishop Sankey, Washington; Jeremy Hill, LSU; Tre Mason, Auburn; Charles Sims, West Virginia. Those are some guys.
Does Tahj Boyd get drafted?
I think he does, but late. I would say 5-7 round.
Is there anything Kelvin Benjamin can do at the combine that would make him the 3rd receiver in this class behind Watkins and Evans?
Just show great physicality. With his size, if he runs well and tests well, shows athletic explosiveness. He has to show good hands -- he had some issues with drops this year. Show consistency. He needs a chiseled frame. If he shows all that, he could go somewhere between 22-32.
Who's your #1 safety? Do you see either Ha Ha or Pryor going to the Pack at 21?
Pryor is my top safety. Ha Ha is next and Ward is my third. Ward is putting pressure on Clinton-Dix. I could see Pryor going to Green Bay. I have them taking him in my last projection.
Offensive draft for the Pats this year? Brady needs weapons!
TE definitely. WR definitely. OL too. But they could use a DT. They could look at Aaron Donald if they wanted to surprise a little bit in the first round. Outside of DT, I could see them going heavy offense.
If you're Atlanta at 6 which OT would you rather have b/ Robinson and Matthews?
Robinson has the higher grade right now, so I say Robinson, but it's not by a lot.
Where do you see Clowney going?
I could see him going either 1 to Houston or to someone else trading up. Atlanta could move up to get him. The lowest I see him going is 3 to Jacksonville.
Tampa Bay could be another team that could move up to get him.
If you were to add marcus lattimore into this draft after a year of healing where would he go ahead of any running back?
If he were perfectly healthy and never had the injury he did, he'd be the top RB. There is no first round RB in this draft. Carlos Hyde would be the only one close.
Do you think Ryan Shazier could be a 3-4 ILB? He is light and would fit better in a 4-3 scheme but do you think he could player ILB in a 3-4?
He could, in the right situation. But he's at his best as a OLB in a 4-3.
Mel, give us a couple of small school sleepers please.
Dustin Vaughan, CB, West Texas AM; Lorenzo Taliafero, RB, Coastal Carolina; Tony Washington, WR, Appalachain State; Joe Don Duncan, TE, Dixie State; Billy Turner, OT, North Dakota State; Kadeem Edwards, OG, Tennessee State; Matt Armstrong, C, Grand Valley State; Larry Webster, DE, Bloomsberg; Zach Kerr, DT, Delaware; Tyler, Starr, OLB, South Dakota; Howard Jones, OLB, Sheperd; Pierre Desir, CB, Lindonwood; Kendall James, CB, Maine; Walt Aikens, CB, Liberty.
I haven't seen much written about Devonta Freeman and James Wilder, Jr. Where do you see them going in the draft?
I think they're both Day 3 picks. I'd give a slight edge to Freeman over Wilder.
Assuming the Texans take Clowney, who do think is most desperate to trade up with the Rams for the 2nd pick? Im assuming the Rams want a combo of this year pick and a 1st next year.
No. I think that would be the spot for Clowney. Somebody going up to get Clowney. If he's gone, then maybe someone goes up for Manziel. He'd be the next guy, maybe.
Where do you see Dri Archer going? I have seen 6-7th round area for him, but with a guy with his talent and speed I have a hard time seeing teams not taking him by the 5th round at the latest.
Yeah, I think that's way too low for a guy who could run a 4.3 40. He could be a situational RB, slot WR, return man. I think he's at worst a fourth round pick. At worst.
In what round does someone take a chance on Trey Millard?
Coming off the injury the way he is, you'd have to think about thhis year as a red shirt situation. Fullbacks have been phased out by many teams. You could be looking at late round pick, priority free agent. Prior to the injury, you're probably looking at a fourth round pick.
If you're the Bucs, is the gap between Clowney and Mack big enough to justify the price of moving up to select Clowney?
I view it like this. I would say that Clowney is a true 4-3 DE, which is what Atlanta wants. Mack is a 3-4 OLB, who could be a DE. He's at his best on his feet. Look at the OSU game. He's sacking the QB. Intercepting passes. He's all over the field. I want him on his feet. He's a true 3-4 OLB. For Atlanta, it would be more Clowney. Gus Bradley at Jacksonville could find real creative ways to use Mack.
What do you think of James White? He will make for a good 3rd down RB. What area do you see him getting drafted?
He's a hard worker. THat's the one thing about him. He's so steady. He was the main ball carrier there. He was the guy. He's shifty. He makes people miss. He can run outside. But he'll surprise you with his ability to run inside. I think he's a guy you look at in the 4-6 round. He'll be a guy that plays in the NFL. A good contributor. Melvin Gordon III was the main guy, but when they needed plays, White was the guy making them.
Thoughts on Tiny Richardson?
I'd say right now, he's a borderline late first, early second rounder. He is one of six LTs that could go in the first round. He's the sixth of that group, so he's a late 1, early 2.
Four of Tennessee's OL have draftable grades.
What % of a player's overall evaluation should be based upon the workouts and interviews that he has at the Combine?
The career/season is half the grade. 30-35 percent for the combine and the last 15-20 percent from the Senior Bowl practices.
We'll be back next Thursday to wrap up the combine. The combine workouts start Saturday and end Tuesday. Next Thursday we'll start talking about who looked good and who didn't. Free agency begins on March 11. We're not that far away, only 19 days away.
