Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf!! Rory loses, Tiger gets hurt, and Doral (the resort) looks a bit like Sochi! So where do you fall on the Tiger injury? Would you call what Rory did Sunday a choke? Have you ever seen Trump in person? I just did... uuuhhh. BRING IT!!

Mike P (greater KC Metro)

MC... More surprised that Paula Creamer made the 75' putt to win the playoff or that Rory lost the Playoff and crumbled the whole day on Sunday.

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

The putt was a much bigger surprise. Conditions on Sunday were brutal and only one guy in the playoff was under par for the day. Thre were a combined +7!

Lizzie (Bentonville)

Sorry if his back hurt, but from my point of view Tiger had three options: If he was having spasms warming up, as he claims, don't start the round; withdraw after the first few holes when he was 3-over after three and his chances of contending were gone; or tough it out and play the final five holes. To wait that long felt like a complete run and hide from the questions about why his game is so inconsistent right now.

Mike P (greater KC Metro)

I looked it up and sunday was Tiger's 2nd withdrawal after making a cut (2010 Players was the other) also this was only Tiger's 7th Tournament to withdraw from (1995 US Open, 1998 ATT Pro am, 2006 Nissan Open, 2011 Players and 2012 WGC-Cadillac Champ.) my question is are you surprised that he hasnt had to withdraw from more or that the number is so low because of the limited schedule that he plays?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

The limited schedule also gives more time for recovery.

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Also for Lizzie. at what point does "tough it out" become a stupid move because now you've made an injury worse? What athlete hasn't tried to play through an injury only to realize they made it worse?

Dylan [via mobile]

Do u think tiger woods back is alright

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Ask me Wednesday after his press conference, and whether he plays a practice round or not.

Oliver (Arkansas)

The Saturday night/Sunday morning coverage of the Honda drove me crazy. Analysts actually said if Tiger shoots 62 and Rory a 69, he'll catch him and get into a playoff. First, nobody was shooting 62 at PGA National in the wind with Sunday pins. Second, what about the 18 other players in front of him? I get it from fans, but why do the "experts" think there's nobody in a field except for Tiger, Rory, Phil and Adam?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Because when analysts talk about Russell Knox EVERYONE turns off tv!

bolaji (lagos, nigeria)

is Tiger too muscular as a golfer?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

There are much bigger golfers than Tiger on tour

Ralph (Madera)

Don't remember who said it on the coverage this weekend, but the theory is those with the most experience at Doral will have the most trouble this week since it's basically a new course and the memories of greens that no longer exist are stamped in their brains. Agree?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

Definitely. I just did video blog about it concerning Tiger. UNlearning is much harder than learning anew. Standing over a putt that has always broke right but now breaks left... how do you get that out of your subconscience?

Brandon (Lodi,CA)

We've all read about how when Tiger worked with Butch and Hank, that his swing under those two caused his knee problems. Now, in a little over three years working with Foley, we've seen two tournaments where his back flares up on him. Is this the result of his swing movement with Foley or something else? And don't tell me the guy is old, he's still in his 30's and in better physical shape than 95% of the players on tour.

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

Fred Couples has always been in really good shape and had back problems. When Tiger first got on tour EVERY golfer over 40 said, his back ain't gonna hold up. Guess what happened?

Charlie (Atlanta)

Is Jordan Spieth the next great PGA player? By that I mean a guy who might win 5 or more majors in next 15 years?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Potentially? Yes. But the question in golf and all sports is: Once you get a taste of big success, can you stay hungry? So far Jordan looks like he's gonna stay hungry. If he does, he can be the next great golfer on tour.

Marc (NJ) [via mobile]

Do you think Rory started thinking about his acceptance speech after the 15th hole yesterday, and lost his concentration?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Nah, I just think when he made a couple bad swings on the front he was waiting for them to show up on the back. Can't win waiting for a bad swing to come, cause then it will.

Juanita (Tulsa)

How are babies made?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Same factory that makes Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. That's what my mom told me.

Kevin Stadler (FL)

Hey Tiger! Ditch the weight training and hang out with me a few weeks. I've never withdrawn from a tourney due to injury.

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

Now that's just wrong... and HILARIOUS!!!

dre (D.C.)

Do you see any chance that Tiger would skip this weeks tournament at Doral?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Sure there's a chance. But I think he really wants to play (defend). And what better way to inaugurate the new design than win? I ain't picking him to win though.

Luke (Orlando,FL [via mobile]

What hole do you see as being the toughest for the players out their this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

I haven't walked the whole course yet but depending on the wind, the par 3 4th could be a tough one.

Al (Pensacola)

Hi MC. Looks like Tiger's back issue won't bode well for Masters preps. If he can't go this week, do you see him picking up another tournament prior to Augusta, or just work at home?

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

He say anything is on the table for switching it up in prep this year. If he adds anything, it'd be Houston

Michael H (OK)

I think it's a little bit unfair and indicative of the general attitude at ESPN to say that everyone turns off the TV when talk of Russell Knox begins or whoever "that guy" is. The casual fan may do so, but many people follow the tour closely week to week and enjoy watching the rise and fall of "regular" players. Although to be fair, Knox is enjoying a bit of breakout this year and looks like a guy that might make it all the way to the Tour Championship.

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Look, I LOVE the era we live in with golfers being this closely bunched talent wise. Numbers prove what I say, I don't like it, but it's true. Without a dominant force winning like Tiger used to, finding "that guy" we love or hate makes people change the channel.

NewportLefty (The Vortex)

You say people turn off the TV if Tiger, Phil, Rory not talked about. I turn off the TV when there is too much gushing and reporting about nothing. Listening to the analysts talk about Tigers swing on the practice range yesterday was comical and provided no information at all. Would have been worth while if someone covering it actually noticed something amiss with his back.

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

I can't speak on what they did on tv yestreday on a different network cause I was on the course actually watching golf.

Tom (Ny)

Do you really think Nicklaus thinks Tiger is gonna break his record?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

Nicklaus keeps saying one thing, "if he stays healthy..." and that's what Tiger is struggling with now.

Ed (Long Island)

Slow news day with everyone talking about Tiger leaving after 13 holes. I'm a Phil fan but believe Tiger was actually hurt - the way he was playing - what would him of playing those 5 holes done for anyone? Also regarding Phil - is this just Phil being Phil or are there substantial problems with his game?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

HAHA!! Not so slow if you're wondering about Tiger's back. And Phil was just being Phil.

Ken (VA)

Enough of Tiger already. Let's talk about who the best player of all time would have been if he hadn't suffered an injury and ruined his swing (and confidence) trying to tough it out - David Duval. Top 10 in PR this week. Sponsors better start giving him spots...because he can play and win...T35 at Pebble shows he is ready. What say you mr. collins?

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

I say a tie for 35th is not an indication that a guy is "ready".

Shoshana (Cambridge )

I'll take Rory to win this week actually at Doral, and Tiger to play but poorly. Don't think he'll hit a full shot till Thursday

Marc (Vegas)

I don't get everyone drooling over Spieth. He won one event, probably the least valuable golf tourney on the schedule, and won by dumb luck at that. I'm much more impressed with Henley, Harris English, and Jason Day.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

So Jordan's other finishes in events he's never played before mmean nothing to ya?

Jeff (Las Vegas)

So if TW shows up for a practice round Tuesday at Trump Doral and plays in this week?s event, will the media finally come around and at least start questioning that he may just be pulling your legs?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

He's already moved his press conference from Tuesday to Wednesday so I don't expect to see him here til then.

Michael H (OK)

A win at the John Deere Classic doesn't vault you to #12 in the world. You get there because you're pretty darn good.

Ed (Long Island)

Adam Scott came off his sabbatical and looked pretty good - I think he may have a double major victory year in him in 2014.

Jason R (Charleston) [via mobile]

What's the chance you could take Keegan Bradley's jumpman shoes when he's not looking? I want those on my feet....Now!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

I already told him I'm stealing them. He put an alarm on his locker! DANG IT!!

El Jefe (MN)

Marc (Vegas) - Dude...2013: 23 events/ 18 cuts / 9 top tens with 1 vicotry in rookie seaon.2014: 7 events / 6 cuts / 3 top 10s....standards just a bit high?

Tim (SF)

Is Trump's hair the most fantastic thing you've seen this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

fantastic is NOT the word I'd use.

Brian (CA)

Is Jordan Spieth in the field for Doral this week? How do you expect him to do?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Just saw him on the range this morning. He looks really good and I expect him to contend. I may even pick him to win!

Oh Honest One (Time Traveler)

Tell Midhael H from OK that the attitude you think ESPN has re: when other guys are in contention, you are wrong. It was exciting, only if you like seeing all 4 guys fall flat on their faces trying to win. It was the most lackluster final four holes, and the playoff made it even more embarrassing for the Rory, 5 over at one point, when they kept harping about Tiger being 5 over. Oh, Tiger was hurt, but the commentators refused to acknowledge this until he was off the course.

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Not so honest if you think the broadcast was on our network. Also, isn't watching the best in the world do what YOU would do compelling sometimes too? Or don't you embrace that aspect of the game?

JD (CT)

In regulation on 18 Rory had 245 & hit 5 wood. In the playoff he had 235 and hit the same club. A misclub or bad shot?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Bad shot

Nelson (DE)

When you caddied, how frequently did your players deal with injuries and how severe were they?

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

EVERY guy had back problems. But all of them got treatment in the morning before starting the warm up and some had after round treatment. One guy made the cut after pulling a hamstring on the course. Holed out for birdie on a par five to make it on the number. Played the weekend.

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Hey MC, Did you get any reaction from Bubba on the "no more bubba crying" video blog you did? Is he playing this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

I don't think he saw it. But I haven't seen him yet. He's on the course right now.

JA (Philly)

How many more majors do you think Phil has in him?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

One more win. Would be awesome if it was Pinehurst this year, and it's gonna be set up for him to win it.

Tom (L.A.) [via mobile]

My 30 yds and in wedge game stinks. What's the best thing you or one of your players learned about those shots?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Give yourself a bigger target. Most am's are trying to knock it to a foot. Give yourself a ten foot circle, it'll take the pressure off.

Tim (SF)

should we talk about the winner yesterday at all? you know, the kid who admittedly launches it, finds it, and launches it again. the same kid who has already won twice on tour, stared a 2-time major winner in the face and made birdie? And the kid who smiles the whole time while he does it? Pretty compelling stuff right?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

And the irony was he said he got away from doing that. It's really hard to just "play" at this level. I asked him what's gonna be different for him after this win. That's what he went back to. He gave a bunch of credit to his caddie Adam Hayes.

Sergio (Spain)

I quietly shot -7 over the final 3 rounds and snuck into T-8 finish after a rough start? Could I pull it off at Augusta if I avoid the one below average round?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

Augusta is ALL about the putter. You gonna be confident there with the flatstick for FOUR days? Show me.

Doug (GA)

MC, who's the first of the young Dawgs on tour to win a major? Kirk, English, Swafford, Harman, Henley?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

English, but Bubba already did that.

Ashley (Jacksonville,Fl)

Michael , Double Standard/Hate Alert. I believe 3weeks ago Mickelson pulls out of Torrey with back issues and 5 days latter is throwing 50 yard bombs on 16 at Waste. Where is the media outrage? And calling him out as a faker?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

You heard it from me, but I guess I need a bullhorn. Not a double standard to me, but I wondered why no one asked why he flew to GA and back.

Doug (GA)

Bubba don't count MC. He's 35. These other kids are 8-10 years younger.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

fair enough

Michael H (OK)

Wow...Georgia has been a golf factory of late...

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

yep

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

HOLY COW! this went really fast. And it's the most traffic I've had all year. Sorry if I didn't get your question in. Email me ESPNCaddie@gmail.com or tweet at me @ESPNCaddie if it can't wait til next week. Same Bat Time.... Same Bat Channel! Your caddie, MC
