Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:01 PM)

Well, this should be fun today with all of the news Ian Kinsler is making. Let's roll.

Jeff (Dallas)

JJT, first Josh's comment of Texas "not being a baseball town" and now Kinsler's of "I hope they [the Rangers] go 0-162," what is it with former Rangers burning these bridges? I loved what Kinsler did for us here but these comments make him seem like a sourpuss. Do you think Kinsler made some valid ponts? Is Rangers brass (namely JD) truly as dysfunctional as Kinsler claims it to be?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

They're the remarks of players who are disappointed or angry that the Rangers either didn't re-sign or traded him. I liked Kinsler as a player overall, but he was just a dude last year and JD made a smart move trading him while he still had some value and he could find someone to take that contract. Kinsler's biggest complaint is JD and the Rangers asked him to be a leader. Really? C'mon bro. The GM is not supposed to be warm and cuddly because he has the most difficult decisions to make.

Melle Starsen (Fayette, Iowa)

Mr. Taylor: I created a sports communication major at Upper Iowa University in 2002. One of my advisees/students reads your articles on a regular basis & considers you an excellent writer. I taught news editing last term

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

thanks much

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Here's my opinion on the Demarcus Ware situation: If Dallas can get under the cap to make moves without having to touch his contract, they shouldn't mess with him at all, unless they decide to cut him. Otherwise let him play on his full salary and if he underperforms, next offseason it's paycut or get cut. No question his play this past year doesn't warrant him playing on a 12 million dollar salary but I believe he should get one more chance to prove himself.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

You can't say in one breath when are the Cowboys going to start managing their cap better and in the next breath say I know Ware isn't worth $12.25 million but let's wait a year to slash his salary. You can't have it both ways bro. The Cowboys are going to go all in on trying to win as long as Romo is their QB.They'll worry about cap and other stuff after he retires

Ed (Queens Village)

Where do you rank Rick Carlisle in today coaches of NBA?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

I haven't thought much about it. But i'd say he ranks somewhere in the top 5 because he almost always maximizes the talent on the roster

raul (rio grande city)

JJT, it seems like Dallas is going to draft a Qb even though they are not admitting it ... But, I would also sign Skelton and see if he can be more than JAG...thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

Why would you expect him to be more than just a guy? Career 8-9 with 15 TDs and 25 INTs

Jason (Miami, FL) [via mobile]

With JJ's comments about needing to win w/Romo "NOW" do you think Boys use next years picks for this Draft since there is so much "DEPTH"?. And any chance for Jonathan Martin or Dion Jordan from Dolphins?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

They'll be looking for guys who can contribute this season. I'm not opposed to giving Martin a chance to make the team. Pretty sure Cowboys don't have what it takes to acquire Jordan.

Art Orvile (Phoenix, AZ)

JJT, what would you do with Ware? Say he doesn't take a pay cut, would you keep him?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

I love everything Ware has done, but if he's not taking a pay cut then he has to go. It's not personal. It's business. He's no longer worth $12.25 million per season.

Art Orvile (Phoenix, AZ)

JJT, is Dez Bryant a leader in the locker room? At the beginning of the 2012 season you said it was time to cut him, but it seems hes a GREAT teammate. Thoughts???

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

Dude, I never, ever said the Cowboys should cut Dez. Go find the article and send it to me, but you'll find it doesn't exist. Now, I probably wrote about the special rules that were in place and JERRY said the Cowboys might cut him if he couldn't follow all the rules after the incident with his mother. I got no problems with Dez.

jfb (dfw)

JJT, what grade would you give Donnie Nelson with his player personnel decisions over the past 10-15 years? Putting the championship team together trumps alot of the other moves, but how many times have we gone to the pg well in the draft, Beaubois, Jones, Cunningham, and Larkin with nothing to show. Letting an athletic Corey Brewer/Rudy Fernandez leave for a 2nd round pick b/c we signed Carter? Letting Chandler go and he becomes Defensive MVP and was the anchor of your championship team plus he could have been trade bait for Howard? Letting Nash go b/c you thought he was too old at 30 years old and he becomes a 2 time MVP. Ellis falls into our lap this year b/c that money was allocated to Harris who happens to fail a physical otherwise we are starting Calderon and Harris with no Ellis here. Supposed deals the past couple of years for guys like Derozen and Deng being passed up. All the guys from the championship team gone with no picks/other players to show for. The Lamar Odom draft pick that cont. to haunt us b/c we want to cont. to pick busts instead of give the pick to OKC so maybe we can access our picks to trade to get a superstar like Kevin Love. Giving up a 2nd round pick to move down in the draft to get Cunningham and passing up on a guy like Sullinger in Boston. People criticize Jerry, but imagine if Dirk had been paired with a true superstar like Duncan/Parker, Kobe/Shaq, Lebron/Wade, MJ/Pippen, etc.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:15 PM)

Donnie has not been good. More bad moves than good, but you already knew that.

Dylan (Miami)

Given their cap restraints, what position(s) do you anticipate the Cowboys addressing via free agency, if any.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:15 PM)

It really depends on what guys want. They may add a player or two, but it won't be some difference maker

Marc (El Paso)

Whats your gut tell you about what the Boys will do with Ware?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

offer him a pay cut and release him if he doesn't want to accept it

Kenyatta Adams (Roselle)

Good Morning Jean. I was wondering of the cowboys should move down in this years draft to stock pile picks or should they trade next years first round draft choice, so they can have the opportunity to draft 2 defensive studs in the first round of this years draft. Have a great day Jean!!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

I'm not a fan of moving down unless you're getting a booty. I like staying where I am and getting the best dude

Eric Jackson (San Francisco)

How does the expected increase in the cap over the next three years affect the Cowboys? Can they slowly pull themselves out of cap purgatory, sign their guys (Bryant, Smith, etc.) and hopefully draft well?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

They're not escaping cap hell until Romo retires. They're all in it to win it until Romo is done. Then they'll do what they did in 2000 under Campo, put all of their cap hits into one awful season

Randall (Shreveport)

JJT espn Dallas is trying to sign archer to a new contract. His chat has been stronger than yours recently. Will you take a pay cut so they can keep him?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Nope. The numbers say different.

Art Orvile (Phoenix, AZ)

JJT, I saw a recent mock draft having the cowboys pick an offensive lineman. This is absurd, right??? It HAS to be defense, no??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:23 PM)

why is that absurd? Free is in last year of deal. Draft a tackle, let him play guard this season then move him to tackle when Free leaves. What if Donald and Jernigan are gone. Is there another DT worthy of being taken right there? If not, take the T and keep it moving. Or take the S and keep it moving.

CJ Bagby (Texas) [via mobile]

Kinsler didnt want to be moved, nor did he want to be a leader. In a team sport, is that the biggest story from his departure?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

He didn't want to be a leader is the biggest deal - and he eels really angry that he was aced to mentor the young guys like Profar. How selfish can you be?

mac (frisco) [via mobile]

What are the expectations for this mavericks team fling into the playoffs?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

one and done. They're not better than OKC, Hou or San Antonio and they figure to finish 6-8 in the West. The question is whether they can win 2 games in the playoffs

Brent (Melbourne, FL)

I get the feeling this season is a last hurrah of sorts for the Cowboys as we know them. Could this be Garrett and Romo's last chance to do something? If Jerry chose to "start over," what would that entail?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

Romo has 3-4 years left. Garrett doesn't - unless he can get to the playoffs.

Andrew (Dallas)

JJT, Are there any moves the Mavs can make in the offseason to sign a big name guy?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

Why would a big-name guy come here. Big-name guys have options. No one wants to team up with Dirk because as great as he is the Big German has only 2-3 years left. Any FA who signs with Cowboys is gonna get a long-term deal that will extend past Dirk's deal. Then that dude will be by himself much like Dirk

TB (New Mexico)

It seems that the rule of thumb with successful NFL teams that they draft "the best player available" when there time comes. With the Cowboys needing defense, what happens if the best player on there board is an offensive player when it comes there time to draft?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

That's really too hypothetical to answer. It depends on the players on the board. If there's a much better offensive player than defensive player, then take that guy. They juts need good players.

Brian (Laredo)

Rank the 4 Dallas teams in order from most likely to win a title soon to least likely.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

RangersStarsCowboys Mavs

Joshua (Grapevine)

With the surplus (at least it looks that way) of DT's in the mid to late first round and early second, do you see Jerry and Co. trading down in the first and trading up in the 2nd to land a surprising 1-2 punch on the DL?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:32 PM)

i wouldn't trade out of the first round. I'd stay there and grad an excellent player

Jim (Houston)

Most believe that Garrett (as well as a majority of the staff) will be canned with another mediocre season in 2014. However, even if they take the next step (i.e. playoffs or possibly win a playoff game) and Garrett is retained, isn't it likely that we could see significant turnover with our best coaches (and as a result, an extension of the reign of mediocrity)? Certainly Callahan (and possibly Linehan) will look for greener pastures. Marinelli may be poached by Lovie, Eberflus is likely to be wooed by Rob Ryan and Bisaccia appears to be annually trolling for a better gig. Thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

you're looking too far into the future. Let's just see what happens this season. It's difficult to know the contractual status of most assistant coaches. Jerry will pay them if they win this season. If not, it's set up for a new coach to come in and hire a new staff

Tyrone Davis (Dallas )

Hey JJT, please explain to me what the Mavericks are doing? And what direction are they trying to go into? They even swung and missed on Danny Granger! Is it better for them to miss out on the playoffs and have a top draft pick again?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

Dude, they're a good team that's not good enough. They'll lose in the first round but they'll make it difficult on their opponent

Michael (Alexandria, VA)

We know the short term ramifications of the current round of Cowboys contract restructuring, but what about the long term? Seems like more of the "kick the can" strategy.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:35 PM)

sooner or later the bill comes due. It just hasn't arrived in the mail yet

Houston [via mobile]

What QB should Dallas pick up in the draft?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

I don't care. It's not like they're going to take a dude in the first 3 rounds. Anyone else is strictly a crapshoot, which means I won't get excited about him until he does something worthy. 30 of 32 starting QBs were taken in 1st 3 rounds. The other two were Brady and Romo

Cain (Berwyn iL)

Do you see the cownboys drafting a wr if they cut Austin or looking at free agency with either nicks or burelson?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:39 PM)

they could take one in the first round if the right guy - Mike Evans - was there and the DL were gone. If Dez gets hurt are you OK with Dwayne Harris or Coile Beasley being the No.2 guy for a few weeks?

Nolan (Texas)

Is their any chance the Mavs make a long playoff run. Say the Mavs get the 6th seed and they play the Rockets or the Clippers or the Blazers. Which are teams that the Mavs would get an outside chance of winning. If they caught fire and Dirk and Monta were at there best and with good bench production, could the Mavs somehow make a playoff run?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

None. They don't play good enough D to make a run. They're one of the worst defensive teams in the league.

Blaine (Virgin Islands)

JJT, what's it like covering a team with 12-4 talent consistently ending up with 8-8 records? I know that Bill Parcells said that you are what your record says you are, but its gotta be frustrating....They blow 4 games a year in the last 3 minutes...

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

I don't know. This team hasn't had 12-4 talent since 2009. You say it blows 3-4 games a year, well it also wins 3-4 a year that seemed lost. That's why they're a .500 team

Landon walker (fort worth texas)

what are the odds of the mavs lebron in the offseason?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

none

Frank (Laredo)

What about moving Demarcus Ware to Sam LB and play him much like Denver plays Von Miller. The way he was used last year obviously wasn't working.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:43 PM)

I don't think you want Ware having to deal with TEs and RT on a regular basis. he's fine on the weak side. He just needs to get healthy. At his age, I don't know if he can

Steve [via mobile]

When are we getting rid of Romo, he is the sole reason the Cowboys are mediocre

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

That's just dumb. Romo has his own issues but he did have 31 TDs and 10 INTs last year. Defense gave up 415.3 yards per game. Both units overall were shaky, which is why they finished 8-8

sam virginia [via mobile]

Whats the chances cowboys get jarius Byrd from buffalo.?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

slim. They don't have big money to go shopping and he wants big money

Shane (jersey)

Do you think that witten role will decrease because of escobar having a larger role in the offense?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

you can play both because Escobar is not true TE. He could take Miles role in the slot.

Sean (Silver springs)

If whats keeping escobar from hitting the field is his inability to block, should the cowboys consider him at receiver similiar to jimmy graham who never blocks in the siants offense?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

that was their issue last year. hopefully, it won't be an issue this year

CJ (Texas) [via mobile]

Lance Stephenson and Luol Deng should get looks from the Mavericks this offseason. Who do you think would fit on this team?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

i'd rather have Stephenson because he helps defense, rebounding and attitude

Nick (NY)

Could Crawford replace hatcher at the 3-tech if he's fully healthy?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

i don't think we've seen enough of him to say. My initial thought is no

CJ (Texas) [via mobile]

One out of One hundred, how would you grade Romo?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

88

Andrew (Celina)

How are Wash, Elvis, and Beltre reacting to the comments made by Kinsler?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:49 PM)

I'm not in Surprise, but everything I've read says they all "no commented" the issue, which makes sense

Cale (Flo Mo)

Two questions:1. Rangers W/L this year +/- 90?2. Is the Cowboys organizational/coaching situation (Linehan, Garrett, playcaller) thought of as a complete joke inside the league?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:49 PM)

I'd say under. I don't trust the rotation right now

jfb (dfw)

Where are the Mavs if Harris doesn't fail his physical and the Mavs never sign Ellis? Are they still fighting for a playoff spot?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

no

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA) [via mobile]

JJT, you and I both know based on his season last year, 12.25 mil shouldn't happen but didn't pull his hammy 3 straight years after getting a new contract. He's been a dominant DE/ OLB. I said if he plays badly this year or gets banged up again, its ultamainum time. Remember, he recorded 11.5 sacks two years back when he eventually playex with one arm.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

i told you earlier, you can't have it both ways.

Cale (Flo Mo)

While Romo is a good QB, does anyone outside of Valley Ranch think of him as a top 5 QB - "tragic if he doesn't win a Super Bowl - paraphrasing Jerry"

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

I don't even think Jerry has him in the top 5. Most reasonable folks have him between 6-12. The tragedy is not making the playoffs - not failure to win Super Bowl - or even get there

Gulf Coast Larry (South Padre)

What are the odds Russell Wilson makes an at-bat with the big league club this season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

less than none

Greg (Jax fl)

why are signing bonus not apart of the cap. if thats the case, why not give all the players signing bonuses and get out of cap purgatory...

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

There's a website called www.salarycap101.com. Check it out

Gulf Coast Larry (South Padre)

JJ, what are your thoughts on Cuban's suggestion that top NBA prospects are better off going to the D-League than college? I'm in favor of a rule that mandates you attend 2 years college IF you don't turn pro out of high school, similar to baseball.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:53 PM)

I'm not opposed to that with some more thought

Rick (TX)

How closely do Cuban and Donnie work with regard to personnel moves? I would assume Cuban has veto power, but is he involved at a strategic level?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:53 PM)

very closely but Mark does let guys do their jobs

Batman (Frisco)

What is the succession plan for Tony Romo as his Hall of Fame career enters twilight?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

that's funny. Get a QB the year before or the year he retires

Rick (TX)

I remember hearing that Ware and Tyron were 'going at it' for most of camp last summer. And that Ware was taking the kid to school. Do you think the cowboys will take an easier approach with Ware this summer, assuming he's still with the team?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

no. His problem is staying healthy during the season - not training camp

jfb (dfw)

If your the Mavs, do you waste time meeting with Lebron or Melo and letting guys like Deng, Bledsoe, Stephenson, and Gortat get picked up by other teams? Didn't that happen last year waiting on Howard and Iguedola ends up in Golden State?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

sure. You gotta give them a chance to say no because they might say yes.

Cowboy Daryle [via mobile]

JJT Byrd is on the open market and would be an excellent addition to the boys !!! You think Jerry might shock the world and take a flyer on him .

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:55 PM)

he probably wants to much $$

Jim (Houston)

Putting emotion aside, shouldn't Ware's value (or any player's value) to the team be measured in forecasted contribution vs cap hit? The Cowboys would save $7.4 MM by cutting Ware? The key point should be how that cap space could be used to improve the team in other ways (possibly helping to sign Melton or Hatcher) vs what Ware can be expected to contribute. I am all for cutting Ware if the Cowboys can be more value out of his cap hit than by keeping him.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:55 PM)

exactly

Daryl (Jersey City)

Who the higher risk player to bring back in you opinion Austin, Spencer, or Hatcher?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:56 PM)

spencer

Dre (Atl)

If the cowboys are negotiating with ware, whats argument can he bring to the table to help his cause?

Andy (Ca)

Will Tony Romo have more problems with his back in the Future?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:56 PM)

i been great for 8 years, I have one bad year and now y'all wanna cut my money

Reggie Smith (Washington DC)

Does Jerruh have a "Capologists"? Someone to tell him this is a good or bad contract? This just pushing the problem down the road to me.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

stephen jones

Steve (Milwaukee,wi)

Why don't the cowboys take a page from the packers, they don't over pay players and they always have a ton of money in cap space?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

they draft better than the cowboys so they can do that., You draft poorly and you have to spend money to atone for your mistakes

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:58 PM)

great chat today. But I've got a Kinsler column to work. Have a great day. The choice is yours.
