Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

Let's roll!!!!

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

I want to revisit the conversation we had on demarcus ware because you missed my entire point: Is demarcus ware worth 12.25 based on last season? of course not, but I don't think he should all of a sudden have to take a pay cut because of one bad year. If Jason Witten has a bad year this season should he have to take a paycut too? That was my point. This wasn't a guy who began to play like garbage or started getting hurt a la doug free and miles Austin when he got his money and neither one of them were approcached about a paycut after one bad year. In fact, I believe they got their money straight up from restructuring. Like I said, based on his last season, he isn't worth the 12.25 mil, but he should be given a chance to show he can still be elite because of his consistency the past several years. if doug free and miles can get chances without being asked about paycuts, Demarcus Ware should get a chance.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

It doesn't work like that. The only question is whether DWare is worth $12.2M this year. If he is pay him. If not, ask him to take a pay cut. Then Ware must decide do I want to take a pay cut after 8 mostly sensational seasons and one bad one. The answer appears to be no, and I can't argue with that.

Jason (Raleigh)

Hey JJ, just been curious with all the 'must take a 3 technique' talk in the draft, Hatcher had 11 sacks which seems exceptional for a dt. Was this really the weak link on our line? I know hatchers likely gone so i guess we do have to replace him, but just dont see A. Donald or Melton as a FA dropping 11 sacks next season. Havent heard the possibility of keeping hatcher or getting Melton and maybe drafting a 1 tech like Hegeman or Nix. Any chance of scenario like that?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

I'd take Melton over Hatcher because you should almost never pay age in the NFL. Melton is 27 and was coming off legit Pro Bowl year before ACL ruined last season. It's pretty hard to project what anybody is gonna do in the draft. All the time, we see dudes we expect to be great fail and dudes we never heard about play great.

Carl Raleigh Nc [via mobile]

If D Ware is cut will we bring back J Hatch and Spencer and then build the D-Line around them and just for the record Romo and Garrett lost COOL points on Saturday wearing Duke shirts....I'm a Heels fan

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

I wouldn't. That's paying two dudes in their 30s. Yuck.

Ed (Queens Village)

Do your Buckeyes have enough to win a Big 10 and make surprise run in NCAA tourney?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

Nope. I love my team and my school but I can't to watch them play because their offense is soooooooo bad. It's like watching pain dry. They have no offensive weapon they can count on, so it frustrates me. We haven't been like that in forever. I felt the same way about the football team in 08 or 09. So awful on O, I couldn't watch.

Erick Sledge, San Antonio TX [via mobile]

Hello Mr. Taylor, I really appreciate how you objective and honest when it comes to sports. Do you believe the Cowboys would be better served to release Demarcus Ware and let Hatcher and Spencer sign elsewhere and use the cap space to sign a few young inexpensive players in free agency and build this roster with young players through the draft?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:13 PM)

Yep. I hate to see Ware go, but it's the cold reality of the NFL. Hatcher was great last year, but I'm probably not going to pay a 32 YO coming off easily the best season of his career. I'd give Spencer one-year deal with a bunch of incentives

jeremy (dallas)

compared to previous cowboy coaches, how much leverage/influence does garrett have on the roster and coaching staff?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

Quite a bit on the roster and addition of Linehan means juice on coaching staff too

Wendell [via mobile]

DO YOU THINK THE COWBOYS WILL GO AFTER DARREN SPROLES.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

Why? Folks whine about Jerry making bad decisions. Now, you want him to sign 30 YO niche player, when you have Dwayne Harris on the roster to return kicks and Lance Dunbar to fill a role Sproles would have. If DC were one player away, then adding Sproles might make sense. But they're not.

Nick (CT)

It pains me to suggest but with what Jerry has done with the cap he needs to cut Ware and Witten now and Austin in June. Creates space in the cap...thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

nothing wrong with Witten. He's still viable dude, but one day his time will come. I don't expect Ware to return and we all know Austin is gone

Joe (Hartford)

Hey JJT - it doesn't look like Ware wants to play ball with the Cowboys and take a pay cut, but I don't think Dallas really wants to lose him either. Would it make more sense for the Cowboys to have Austin take a paycut down to the veteran's minimum (he's not going to get more than that out on the market) so Dallas will have those cap savings now rather than after June 1st? That way Dallas could do a little in FA and have the draft to improve their team and if they like what they got, they could release Ware later so they have money to sign FA's. I would think Ware would be more willing to restructure in late May when most teams have completed their spending spree and he won't get what he thinks he's still worth.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

Ware and Austin will probably both get cut

Roy (Oklahoma)

Cut Ware and the spending can begin? Jared Allen can take over for Ware. Sign Melton to take over for Hatcher. Resign Spencer for one year. Draft a d-tackle! Problems solved! Super Bowl! I'm available if Jerry would like me to take over?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

You're joking right. You wanna cut 31YO Ware for 31 YO Jared Allen and sign Spencer coming off a surgery that might end his career. We have no idea whether Spencer can physically still play. Signing Melton is only move I'd co-sign

John S. (Flower Mound)

Who is it most important for the Rangers Season to go good? Yu, Beltre, Prince, Choo, Holland, Profar, or other?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Feliz. If he's big-time closer, then everything else falls into place. if not, then there is significant hole in the BP

Joel (New Hampshire)

Question of the day, do you cut Ware if he does not take pay cut. I agree with Calvin Watkins and try to rebuild without him.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

yep

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Do you see Devin Harris taking over the starting role at PG at all, or would the Mavs prefer to let him work effectively against 2nd units? And would that be due to having troubel benching a guy making that much money in Calderon?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:23 PM)

I wouldn't do it. This is the NBA. Guys have good stretches for 3-4 games all the time. He's played 5 good quarters in a row. Before that, he'd failed to hit double figures in 12 of 13 games. He's only had three consecutive games with double figures once this year. Nothing wrong with letting him close out games. Calderon has been good much of the year.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Dalembert is making around $35,000 per game. How hard is it to say to yourself "Ok, someone is paying me $35,000 to bust my butt for 30 minutes of playing time, playing the game I love, and even if I don't love it, I owe them 30 hard minutes."

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

Do you do your absolute best at work every single day you show up? Most folks don't. Everybody in the NBA has off nights. Don't confuse lack of performance with lack of effort. Dirk was 3-14 against Indy, but he played hard.

Max S (Dallas) [via mobile]

Is there still a David Price deal out there?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

I don't think so. Not now anyway. What are you dealing?

Justin (Odessa)

Is this flash in the pan highlight for Dallas winning two against Pacers or is it a turning point? Do Mavs just have pacers number for some reason?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

Lot of reasons. Pacers were probably focused on ASB and Mavs had poor loss to Charlotte and were ready to play in G1. In last game, Indy is in bad stretch and with three road games coming up Mavs were focused, especially after debacle in Denver. That's the NBA sled for you.

Brad (Rockwall)

Is this Rangers season more dependant on surviving the first half while waiting for Holland to return in the second half to sure up rotation?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

I'm in the minority who don't think Holland is going to pitch this season. I hope he does, but I'm not expecting it. That's me.

Tom (Plano)

Has the Mav's rotation gone with Calderon as the starter and Harris as the finisher for the stretch run? Harris seems to be that spark on the second unit that we need, and defense at the end to hold opposing gaurds.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

It's only been two games. Carlisle will stick with it as long as it works

James (Bone Daddy's in Frisco)

Enjoy some BBQ and pondering the odds of Mavs reaching the sixth seed? Where do you put their chances on that between as sure as a open Dirk's top of key shot to long shot Lebron James in Dallas next year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:32 PM)

I really think you should be concerned with the Mavs making the playoffs. Have your seen how close the 6-7-8-9 seeds are? Someone is gonna get their feelings hurt. They have NO CHANCE AT ALL to sign LBJ. NONE. AT ALL.

Chris (Winston)

Sources say Ware wants a Cowboys decision by the start of free agency. Do we know that Ware has turned down a pay cut and now the ball is totally in the Cowboys court? Why wouldn't the Cowboys just wait?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

He's not interested in a taking a pay cut. DWare has done everything the Cowboys have wanted or needed him to do. He's exemplary on and off the field. Why would you try to put him in position where he has to take your offer. If he doesn't want to take a pay cut, then that's his choice.

Jim (Maine)

Any news on what the Cowboys are going to do with Kyle Orton's contract?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:35 PM)

as far as I know, he's still the backup Qb

MavsFan (Frisco)

Who can mavs target for next year to become a legit contender?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:35 PM)

can we finish this season first? No idea what the mavs are going to do in the offseason

dcstands4 (DC) [via mobile]

I've heard that Spencer won't be touched today. When will Dallas deal with him?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

he's a FA coming off a major injury who didn't play last year. He's a little ways down on the priority list

Cory (NC)

Do you think Tyrone Crawford and Selvie could get the job done on the outside? I do, I say go interior, Crawford is massive! Just a setback but he seems to be getting overlooked!

jfb (dfw)

The guy talking about Dalembert busting his butt and working hard the entire time your at "work"....uh what percentage of your followers are probably chatting with you during work right now instead of working?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

He's never done anything. He missed lat year with an injury and he was OK as a rookie. Doesn't mean he won't be really good, but I've never seen him be really good. No one has

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

If I'm the Cowboys, I hold on to Ware until May if he doesn't take a paycut. That way, no other teams have much $$$ to sign him. Then tell him he can be cut and signed for much less $$$ than the Cowboys are willing to reduce his salary too. If he's going to play hardball and be unreasonable, he should probably see how far he's willing to play this game.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

why would you try to hose a loyal employee who has been exemplary on and off the field. Some of y'all are just a trip. The man doesn't want to take a pay cut so you want to force him to take one...smh

Jim (Houston)

Assuming the Cowboys are not planning to be big players at the beginning of FA (and will only make minor moves later in FA), why not defer the decision on Ware? I wouldn't be forced by any player or agent to make a decision in a time frame that is not in the best interest of the team. We all understand why Ware wants to know now, however I think Dallas should play this one out until they really need the cap room to sign a player later in FA. Ware may become more reasonable with his contract demands once the market starts to dry up. Thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:39 PM)

You can't have it both ways. Either you want Jerry to make good decisions as a GM or you don't. This is not a job for the sentimental. It's not a job where you put off decisions for a year. It's a job where you make tough decisions all the time like what to do with Ware.

Thomas (Austin)

The Mavs play more at home than away the rest of the season, as opposed to the Suns and Grizzlies, who will both spend more time away from home. Does this make all the difference? Will the Mavs make the playoffs despite inconsistent play the past couple of weeks, and overall poor play against top teams?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

the Mavs' fortunes rest on their defense. They're an awful defensive team. If they remain awful, there's a good chance they'll miss the playoffs. If they play harder and better on defense they should be OK

jfb (dfw)

Wouldn't it be wise for the Mavs to push for a top 10 record overall, get rid of that pick to OKC despite the draft class this year, and be able to access your picks so maybe you could trade 2 or 3 number ones plus players for a Kevin Love, Aldridge, or Rondo next year when they are in their final year? I have heard the front office saying they value having a pick in this years draft and would rather have to give up a pick in another draft year.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:41 PM)

that's the plan, but this team isn't good enough to say let's push for a top 10 record.

Jordan (garland) [via mobile]

I would like to enter the sports journalsim department when I graduate from highschool . Going off to college next year at unt . Any piece of advice could u give me ?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

hook up with the dudes I already mentor up there Eric Siner and and Saad Yousef. After that, read and write as much as possible. Never let anyone work harder than you do. Success is all about the mergence of talent and hard work and a pinch of luck

Sammy Sid (Allen)

JJT.... should we resign Dirk next year or just let him go ?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

he's still an ALL-Star caliber player. He wants a 2-year deal

G-Money (Chicago, IL)

Blessings, JJT - I have a feeling the Cowboys will be too afraid to release D-Ware. They'll be haunted by the notion that he could bounce back and return to form this season, so they'll prefer to overpay him instead of letting him walk. They're scared, JJT. Besides, who's out there in free agency and/or the draft who can take his place?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

I think they'll let him go because they don't believe he's worth the money. Fear has zero to do with it.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Dalember is making $35,000 playing a game. He can play harder.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

never seen ANYONE as obsessed with money as you. Ever. That's not a positive bro.

Matthew (Virginia)

Do you think Cuban regrets not trading for Cousins or Sanders? Also, I know Cuban doesn't want to break the bank but do you think this offseason he finally stops bargain shopping? Thanks!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

I don't really think Mark lives in a world of regrets. Mark isn't bargain shopping on purpose. he's done a good job keeping the club very competitive this year. But they still haven't found a player better than Dirk.

jfb (dfw)

Shouldn't people realize that this team was one of the worst defenses in the league with Hatcher and Ware. The 4-3 involves too much pounding for a player like Ware where he thrived in a 3-4 environment. The guys are in their 30s, cut bait and try to draft Donald and sign Melton where you can get younger and know you can't do any worse defensively.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

there's some truth to that

dcstands4 [via mobile]

If Ware gets cut today is Melton a done deal?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

No. He's a FA. He has options. The Cowboys might solve their issue through the draft

Dallas Stars (Dallas)

Are we going to make the playoffs?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

Only 5 points separates teams 7-12 in the Western Conference. I have no idea if Stars make - I hope they do - but it'll go down to the last week either way

MC Brokeasajoke (The Cellar)

JJT,Is this the year the Cowboys finally give up on the Matt Johnson experiment? What safety(ies) should they be targeting in the draft?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

He'll go to training camp and we'll see. If he can't stay healthy then his time here will probably end. He did some good things in limited time in camp before he was hurt. Again.

JT (Salary Cap, Hell )

Whit the money saved from letting Ware walk, would the Boys be able to pay Melton and Woodyard?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

I think they could get that done, if they wanted to go that way

ggggg (ggggg)

Do you think the cowboys will go after Owen Daniels in Free Agency he would be a good backup Te.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:53 PM)

they just spent a 2 on Escobar last year

Mike T (Arlington)

How do you feel about the Rangers' starting rotation right now?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:55 PM)

Queasy. Yu is cool. Harrison's back makes me uneasy. I have zero confidence Ogando can pitch 165 innings or make 25 starts. Lewis, Saunders and Hanson are hopes and prayers.

COWBOY DARYLE (BAY AREA)

IT'S A SHAME AND SCAM if they the BOYS of a sudden try and show the world that they are ABOUT THAT BIZNESS BOSS , Ware is or one of the greatest Cowboys ever and now you want him to take a paycut , this is embarassing if you ask me the way its been handled, with that said can you imagine a line of WARE, HATCHER , SPENCER, CRAWFORD . We make a run at the Super Bowl, the thing that messed WARE UP WAS THE 4-3

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:00 PM)

So you want him to be a poor GM forever.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:01 PM)

It has been a great chat, but I have to chase down some Demarcus Ware news. Stay tuned to espndallas.com and JJT_ESPNDallas on Twitter for the laxest info.
