Is Chris Mack really considering the Wake job, or is he angling for more dollars from Xavier?
No one has reached out to Mack from Wake Forest -- yet. They are likely going to make a run (like Marquette) for Shaka. It would be a tough decision for Mack -- since he has a terrific recruiting class coming in next year at Xavier. I think it could go either way if Wellman and Wake come after him.
what are your thoughts on jabari parker staying? is it possible?
You never say never (due to Marcus Smart and a few others), but it's a longshot. I think he's gone.
WHY DOESN'T SHAKA WANT US (MU)?
No one knows with 100 percent certainly whether Shaka wants you guys or not, but I'm being told he's leaning towards turning it down. One major issue is Marquette has an interim AD and president -- and coaches want to know they are working for someone who will stick by them and who hired them. Another is the TV package.
Clearly Colorado wasn't anywhere near the same team they were after Spencer Dinwiddie was lost for the season. Do you see Dinwiddie coming back, or taking off to the NBA?
I agree. I think Colorado gets a higher seed and is still alive right now if Dinwiddie is healthy. He's one of the best guards in the country. My gut says he comes back and the Buffs are a Top 15 team next season.
Shaka isnt coming to Marquette...is he?
My gut? No, I don't think so.
Do you see Greg Gard (Wisco Assistant) making the leap to a head coaching position? Anything out there for him?
C'mon, Gary. We worked together for two years. You need to do your own research now!!! LOL. Gard is a really good assistant. He should get a head job soon. Bo Ryan's staff is tremendous. So underrated.
Is there any talk about John Calipari and the NBA next year? It seems he is an attractive name to mention every year and after hs failure there you have to think he might want to try it again.
I've talked to a ton of NBA guys and most of them wouldn't even hire him for a few reasons. 1) His personality - It's a better fit for college. 2) His biggest strength is recruiting -- There is no recruiting in the NBA. Also, he's not going to leave UK unless it's to coach LeBron or KD in the NBA. That's probably not going to happen.
will we win it all and will I be drafted??
I think you'll be drafted in the second round, but you need to shoot a little more in the next couple weeks. I know we've said for you to be a better true point guard for 3-plus years, but that doesn't mean you can't shoot!! The question is whether that wrist is still bothering you.
What's your best guess as to who will end up as Marquette's new coach?
Just a gut - but I'm going with either Ben Howland, Mike Hopkins or Brian Wardle.
With Shaka Smart out of the picture, who do you have taking over the Marquette job. Ben Howland or the field?
Shaka is not completely out of the picture, but I don't think it'll happen.
Does Wake Forest have a good chance at getting Shaka?
Shaka is close to the vest. No one knows yet on this one, but again -- I think Shaka winds up staying at VCU over going to Marquette or Wake.
This is going to be a bit out of left field due to all the Sweet 16 talk and coaching news at bigger schools, but do you have any potential names for the open Jacksonville job? I am a 2008 graduate of JU and Dolphins basketball is near and dear to me.
Artis Gilmore? LOL. I haven't done a lot of work with this one to be honest. Only name I heard is former South Carolina coach Darrin Horn.
Where do you think Cleanthony Early goes in draft? Do you think Wilbeken or VanVleet can play in NBA?
No one improved their stock more in one game than Early. I think he goes late in the first round. Remember, he's a guy who took advantage of playing the 4 in college. He'll have to be a 3 in the NBA.
Which favorite do you think is most likely to get upset in the sweet 16?
Finally an actual NCAA tourney question. I think Virginia goes down to Michigan State, but that's not exactly much of an upset. I also think UCLA could take down Florida. Bruins can really score -- and if Frazier isn't making shots against the zone ...
The Pistons want Izzo, how would I look replacing him?
If Izzo goes to the Pistons -- which is a BIG if at this point -- I'd look at hiring Archie Miller if I were Mark Hollis. But that's just me.
Best guess for the Wake Forest vacancy?
Can I say Ben Howland for all of them? LOL. If Ron Wellman were smart, he'd hire former Wake assistant Pat Kelsey or Chris Mack. Kelsey is at Winthrop. Mack isn't a slam dunk to take the gig. Get back to the Skip Prosser family. It worked.
Does Samaj Christon declare for the draft or will he return for what could be a top 25 team?
That's a 50-50 one right now. He should come back, but my guess is he gets feedback from NBA that he is in the 25 to 40 range -- and that's always a tough one to figure. I guess I'm saying it could go either way.
With smart likely out of the picture, any chance Gregg Marshall coaches Marquette next year?
I've been told that Marquette is not interested in Gregg Marshall.
Better front court teammate for me Embiid or Vonleh?
Embiid. He's so skilled and could play the 4. But I love Noah also -- and his upside.
Biggest matchup to watch in Michigan v. Tennessee?
Point guards. Fifth-year senior in Antonio Barton vs. freshman in Derrick Walton.
Which double digit seed do you see winning the Stanford - Dayton game?
Have you ever gone to Bob's Deli in Tucson? That guy knows his upsets. I'm going with Stanford on this one. Johnny Dawkins has a ton of talent -- Randle, Powell Heustis, Anthony Brown.
Is a Bruce Pearl a good fit for the Auburn job? Havent seen this much excitement around Auburn basketball in a long long time.
Great fit. BP makes them relevant. He'll get it done -- but it's going to take some time. He's looking right now at hiring the right staff -- which is critical, especially for him since he can't recruit until August.
The officials are interupting this chat to go to the monitor to review the last 3 questions...
Damn officials. At least they are getting it right.
Have you heard anything on Gregg Marshall to Marquette?
As I said, I'm told not enough interest from the part of the Marquette peeps. Marshall doesn't fit everywhere.
Can you handicap the favorite to land Anthony Lee?
Five finalists for the Temple transfer -- who can play ASAP: Ohio State, Indiana, Louisville, Iowa State and Notre Dame. I'm just guessing here, but I'll go with Iowa State. They kind of like those transfers!!!
Was this season lightning in a bottle for a young Longhorns team? Or can we expect big things from them next year?
I think it depends whether they can get Myles Turner. He's a likely one-and-done and could take Texas to a different level. As presently constituted, I think they are a fringe Top 20 team again.
Can Julius Randle play the 3 in the NBA like Larry Johnson, Charles Barkley or is more of a ZBO/ Elton Brand?
I've always thought he's a straight 4-man. So tough, but can step out and be a tough matchup due to his quickness and strength. He'll be a very good NBA player. Not a star, but a 15 & 8 guy.
Why would Marquette hire Mike Hopkins if hes the coach in waiting for Syracuse?
Because Boeheim may coach until he's 100.
Who's a dark horse for the Marquette coaching job?
Mike Hopkins. Syracuse coach-in-waiting. Brian Wardle - played and coached at Marquette. Currently at Green Bay as head coach.
Who will be the Manhattan candidates now that Masiello is gone to USF?
Masiello has not accepted the job yet. Still in negotiations. He will likely take it, but it's NOT done yet.
Anyone pursuing Amaker?
Yes. Boston College has targeted Amaker, now the question is whether he wants it or not. I've heard conflicting reports, but most of those close to TA say he will stay at Harvard instead of going to BC.
What happened with Shaka yesterday? I've never seen two more different versions of the same story get such strong traction.
Twitter, man. Anyone can throw anything out there. It's sad -- and will eventually result in my divorce. LOL. My poor wife had to watch me chase down false rumors all night last night.
There was some talk after missing the NIT that some IU boosters want Crean gone and Mike Woodson to replace him. Thoughts?
I'm not buying it. Crean is fine for at least another year, and Woodson wouldn't be the right hire, anyway.
Billy Donovan just inked a new deal to stay at Florida thru 2019, will pay him an avg of $3.7 million per yr. Hes been at Florida for 18 years, do you think he is a Gator for life?
The only place he leaves for is the NBA. He did that dance once, but I think he'd go to the league for the right job.
Why is Dante Exum rated to go before me in the draft, when he is a high school kid from Australia?
Because he's a mystery. People have had too much time to pick apart your game.
Anyone pursuing Mike White?
I don't think so. I think he was in the mix down the list at Auburn and South Florida. He's a terrific up and coming coach, though.
If Kelvin Sampson gets the Houston job, will he be able to bring the program back to relevancy or has he been away for the college game for too long?
He will bring it back. No doubt in my mind. Look at what the guy did at Oklahoma. He can really, really coach -- and now he can make as many calls as he wants!!!!!
Is Dawkins at Stanford for the long haul or will he leave for greener pastures?
Where is he going? I think he's there for a few more years.
Am i still a first rounder? SHould i Stay or go?
Please come back, Zach. You are not ready and are a fringe first-rounder.
Any chance Marquette can get Diamond Stone.
Depends on the new coach.
Kevin Keates going to get a head job this off season?
Keatts is in the mix at UNC Wilmington.
What's with the lack of word on coaching leads for Wake Forest? Is Ron Wellman playing things really close? Or are there other factors in play here?
Wellman does play it close to the vest. No search firm, not a lot of help.
Hey Jeff, how goes it? Every year it seems John Beilein is the best coach in America that nobody is talking about, and this year appears no different for the most part. What is it that makes him so good, yet so under-the-radar?
He is a tremendous coach and teacher. He develops players, and evaluates extremely well -- and now he has NBA-level talent.
Jeff, who you got? Michigan or Tennessee?? Preach on, son.
Going with the Wolverines here. Been there before. I think Morgan and Horford are solid enough down low, but key is point guard play.
do you see the Celtics packaging some of their future pics to get their guy and who do you think danny wants?
Danny will try and move up if they don't get in the top 3, but it'll be tough because people are still excited about future of Wiggins, Embiid and Parker.
Any chance Rob Jeter gets mentioned for jobs again this offseason?
Not seeing it.
If not Amaker to BC, then who?
I think Mike Hopkins is in play here if Amaker doesn't take it.
Are you saying Donovan is a better fit for the NBA than John Calipari? I thought Cal and World Wide Wes were Lebron's choice for his next team.
Been told World Wide Wes and LeBron aren't nearly as close as they once were.
The Archie Miller extension announced yesterday. Does that mean he's unlikely to talk to Wake or Marquette?
That is correct. Archie isn't going to Marquette, Wake or BC.
Is SBU coach Mark Schmidt in play at BC?
Maybe -- but down the list.
What regional will you be attending this weekend?
That's an easy answer -- Indy. Louisville vs. UK. Wow. Cannot wait.
Can UConn move on with another win?
Absolutely. No Georges Niang, I think Napier is the best player left in the tourney. He needs help, though.
Who retires first: Coach K, Roy, Boeheim, or Pitino?
Great question. No clue, but I'd go with Roy if had to pick one of them. But could be any of the four.
You said you'll be in Indy- who wins??
I'm taking UK. Just think if Harrell gets into foul trouble, Louisville can't win.
One name that hasn't been mentioned for the Wake job that has connections to the Deacs is Frank Haith. What's the word?
do you see Mo Cassara getting another shot? As an assistant at least?
Absolutely. Had a tough deal at Hofstra, was thrown into the fire. Someone needs to hire him as a high-level assistant.
Hoiberg has to be on a few NBA teams radars, no?
No question. He turned down an NBA head gig last year. He will be selective and won't go into the league with a crappy job.
OK. guys gotta go. Breaking news awaits. Thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated.
