Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! I just came off the golf course and if you have any golf questions for Josh Scobee (kicker for Jacksonville Jaguars) let me know he said he'd jump in here too.

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

Just chatted with Dan Marino who told me the story of when he fell in love with golf... let's just say a DOUBLE EAGLE was involved and yes I got it (the story) on camera!

Marc (NJ) [via mobile]

Buddies trip coming up in Orlando! Would like to know if you have any tips for OCN, Grand Cypress and Champions Gate? Also, best sports bar to watch the NCAA games?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Don't forget to try and get on the Ritz Carlton course! Champions Gate and Grand Cypress pretty wide open but all those tracks have great greens the last time I played them.

Tommy (Neenah, Wisconsin)

Can you see Jason Kokrak winning this year? And if he ever gets into the Masters (97th right now with two weeks left to qualify) I think that place sets up perfect for him.

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

I do believe Kokrak can win this year but I don't know that he'll get in the Matsers this year. That course takes a while to get used to.

Dominik (NY)

Not trying to stir up any muck, but Callaway's Instagram and Twitter feeds posted pictures of Matt Every's "What's in the Bag" and they showed 15 clubs, with what looked like the driving iron in there. Has there been any word or clarification about whether it was just a promotional picture or something along those lines to put this to bed? Is it something the Tour would even look into since the tournament is over? I'm more curious than conspiratorial here. Thanks!

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

I haven't seen the pic, but there was also a big to do when his caddie pulled out a compass. Now that the tournament is official... but with everything going on if there would have been an issue about that club (which may have been a training device and is legal to carry just not to use during the round) it would have come to light.

Brandon (Lodi, CA)

I thought that you couldn't lose with a belly putter? One guy fails with one (Scott) and one guy (Keegan) almost pulls out a victory with one. Maybe I've missed reading your thoughts on the subject in the past, but where do you stand on the topic MC? I thought that the weekend showed that just because you anchor to your belly or chest doesn't mean you're going to make putts. If that was the case, Scott would have walked away with it, or Keegan would have done his Tiger impression on the 72nd hole.

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

I have always said the truth about the ban is because people don't like the way it looks. NO hard data shows that it gives an advantage. I think it's a mistake to ban them.

Jim Tressel (The Great State of Ohio)

MC, the PGA Tour doesn't have entry fees for their members do they? What about non-members?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

No more entry fees on the PGA Tour

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

PGA Tour pro Russell Knox just sat down next to me eating Taco Lu's and didn't bring me any! Torturing me!!

Brandon (Lodi, CA)

Do the last 36 holes at Bay Hill take some of the wind out of Adam Scott's sails before he play the Masters? If he wins yesterday he had to have been the odds on favorite to win considering Tiger's back issues and Rory's struggles there.

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

Adam is such a tough competitor I think this makes him even more hungry now going to Augusta. I think this past weekend will be like water off a ducks back.

Jim Tressel (The Great State of Ohio)

Detail a sample PGA Tour player's day for us if you don't mind...a practice round day with no pro-am.

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Every pro is different, some have 6-8 hour practice days, others have 1-2 hour practice days. There's way too many different ways to get it done out here.

JA (Philly)

You ok with the Eagles openly shopping DJax?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

NO

Guy (Guyville)

MC, how much does Sundays Chokejob affect Adam's confidence heading into augusta. IF he putts at Augusta like he did a BayHill on Sunday, he's toast

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Don't think he choked, just didn't make the putts when he needed to on the weekend. As far as Augusta goes, he'll be just fine.

Griffin (NY)

Michael, lots of news on Tiger, but what's with the adjustable hats he's been wearing lately?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Marketing.

Justin (Johnson City, TN)

I don't remember Adam Scott being a bad putter with the shorter putter, inconsistent, yes, and sometimes hot, as he had several wins on tour. I don't see why he does not bite the bullett and go back to the shorter model. He will have to eventually. Thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

He was actually ranked 6th in the world for a time when he used the short putter. He has already said he's gonna use the same style putter he's using now but he's gonna hold it away from his body an inch.

Scott (Sonoran Desert)

Better golfer Scobee or Jay Feely?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Just asked him... Scobee says him by at least a half mile. I've personally seen him shoot 68 on a tough track.

Ankeet [via mobile]

How come Snedeker and Stricker are great putters? I thought only majors matter and they have none to show for it.

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

You forgot Brad Faxon

Nelson (DE)

Is Augusta the hardest course to walk on tour? If not, then which one do you think is?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

It's probably second. Kapalua (Maui) is the toughest

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Hey MC, You didn't give Bubba any Tamiflu did you?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

Nah, but everything down here in FL is covered with yellow pollen. If you have allergies you are definitely suffering.

Scott (Sonoran Desert)

How worried should I be my Masters bet on Jason Day?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

Very worried.

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

As in not going to make the cut worried?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

As in, how healthy will he be and will he be able to play the whole week.

Sunny (MN)

MC, Do you think Tiger will play Masters?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Yes.

Marc (NJ) [via mobile]

I will try Ritz Carlton also, thanks! Still need to know where to watch the Gators!

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Depends where you're staying but there's a good Buffalo Wild Wings near Downtown Disney

Ankeet [via mobile]

Is there any caddie who would turn down Tiger?(except bones)

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

I think there are a few who would stay with their players.

Justin in MN [via mobile]

Hey Michael! This week who has the better chance of winning. Speith or Walker? Walkers home course, correct?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

I don't think it's his home course but I think Spieth may be fresher than Walker.

Tim (Atlanta, GA)

Healthy and will he be able to play the whole week? Ditto for T.W.

Mike P (Greater KC Metro)

Does the PGA want Tiger to rest and come riding in on his white horse and win the Masters by 4 or do they care because they know that they will get ratings no matter what for the Masters

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

The PGA Tour has NOTHING to do with the Masters so they could care less. They'd rather have Tiger play in the Players Championship.

Eric (San Antonio)

What do you expect from Phil during the Texas Two-Step?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

I don't expect alot this week in San Antonio but next week in Houston I think he'll be in contention.

Nick (Canada)

your take on Phil adding an event before the Masters? Cause for concern?

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

Not when it comes to Phil. It can actually help him

Nathan (Columbus)

What's going on with Rickie Fowler? I know he's working on his swing with Butch, but besides the Match Play he's had a pretty awful start to the season.

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

It takes time for swing changes to set in for good and he's been just a little inconsistent. But... that being said, I expect him to contend again this year.

David (Austin)

TAP TAP TAP, HELLO, is this thing on?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

hey tip the wait staff on your way out!

Megan (Orlando,Fl)

Michael, When Tiger and even Vijay call it quits whom will all the self-proclaimed objective reporters ridicule and attempt to destroy on a daily basis?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

There will ALWAYS be a guy who has to play the role of the bad guy. Even if he truly isn't. It's unfortunate but true. People want someone to love and someone to hate.

Dave (Pitt)

Too early to give us your Masters pick?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Yep. Way too early

Tom (Verona, WI)

As I understand it the World Golf Ranking is set up to rank players to qualify for tournaments. Is there validity to saying that it identifies the current best player?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

NONE! Is Tiger the best player in the world this week?

Greg (South Bend, IN)

Mc, What do the Loopers do when their boss is out of action like in Joe Lacava's situation? Like day jobs? Got to make a living somehow on the side don't they?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

I don't know any pro caddies that have other jobs on the side. Most just enjoy the time at home with family.

Steve (East Coast)

Love how Megan pretends Tiger and Vijay are innocent and don't deserve negativity.

Tom (Albany)

What did you think of Matt Every's caddie giving him a super hyped up talk about laying up and Every listening to him?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

It's what makes a great caddie. Knowing what your player needs to hear to make the best decision.

Megan (Orlando,Fl)

Michael, Right.. Phil is playing sooooo well. One top 10 since last July .missed cuts, withdraw and only breaking 70 8 times in that time period. Yes, the media darling is ready to WIN

Keith H (Seattle)

Phil usually plays the week before the Masters. One year he played the week before in Atlanta when it had the tournament. He won in Atlanta and again in Augusta. No worries...

Steve (East Coast)

Why does everyone brush off Adam's choke as a *good thing* or as something that'll blow over? He can't close with the lead, he can only win by coming from behind.

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

I don't think anyone is "brushing off" what Adam did this weekend, but enough people have seen him enough to know now when he gets near the lead... winning is hard. Even for the best guys out here

David (Austin)

@Megan-Hey you mad bro?!

Shoshana (Cambridge )

@greg look at tigers winnings from last season, even at ten percent Joey doesn't need a day job. For a caddie with a family is tiger the best job on tour? Doesn't play a ton, and you still usually make lots of money

Nelson (DE)

Do you think Joe LaCava has given Tiger advice on how to deal with back issues based on his experience working with Couples? Or is there too great a difference between what they went through?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

I would think Tiger might ask for some tips ar call Fred himself and ask what he does.

David (Austin)

@Megan-Phil is a "Media Darling" because he is personable, doesn't holler obscenities after shots with kids ten feet away, and is a good family guy.

Megan (Orlando,Fl)

Michael, Is Bill Clinton a bad guy? I would love to hear your answer. Hypocrisy anyone. Or is there much more here you wont talk about?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

So you would rather I just bad mouth everyone out on tour. Would that make you feel better about yourself?

TyWebb (Bushwood)

Wow, this chat took a sharp turn....

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Ain't that the truth. Enough of the black cloud people. I'm WAY to happy to let anyone bring me down!

John (Nashville)

What did you think of Sneds' play at the API? Finally put together a couple rounds and got his first top 10 of the year. Could he be peaking for Augusta?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

I hope but he puts so much pressure on himself because he wants it so bad that I'm scared he might not play loose.

Marc (NJ) [via mobile]

I thought slow play was a touchy subject, wow.

David (Austin)

Preach on!!

Aaron (Wisco)

Wait until Tiger wins 15 and see what the media has to say about him then.

Patrick (Pittsburgh, PA)

I was just curious as to what you thought about the changes to the HoF criteria...

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

It makes sense but I'm disappointed by the representation of the 16 member comittee. 3 Women and no African Americans isn't a representation of what golf is culturally. That is a downer for me.

Tom (Albany)

What exactly was changed in the HoF criteria other than needing 15 wins instead of 10?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

Gonna be every two years now and there are 4 categories with 20 people suggesting names... still no caddies though. That is so wrong.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

Told y'all it would go too fast! And perfect timing too. A big plate of food was just dropped off for me!! Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel... next Monday. Have a great week everyone. ESPNCaddie@gmail.com or @ESPNCaddie on twitter. Your caddie... MC
