Chat with Jeff Goodman

Danny, Aurora IL [via mobile]

Why does age matter so much in the draft? Sure younger players have more time to develop their game but a player like Adriean Payne seems to be pushed aside like he's 30 years old. I see him as a Taj Gibson clone with a jump shot. That's worthy of a lottery pick in my opinion.

Jeff Goodman
  (2:01 PM)

NBA guys love upside -- and they would rather take someone who hasn't tapped his potential rather than someone older.

Boris (San Antonio)

If Sixers take Exum do you expect them to trade MCW?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:02 PM)

Yes -- but I do not expect Philly to take Exum. I believe MCW will remain in Philadelphia.

Nathan (Utah)

What is the chance the Jazz trade into one of the top 4 slots of the draft?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:02 PM)

I think the only way that Utah trades is if the Jazz can get into the top 2 -- and get Wiggins or Parker. Otherwise, they may still have a shot at landing Embiid -- if he slips to 5.

matt (philly)

what are chances wiggins slips to 3 and what are potential trades the sixers could make?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:03 PM)

With Embiid's most recent injury, I don't see a scenario where Wiggins slides out of the top 2. Milwaukee likes Exum a lot, but I don't think the Bucks pass on Wiggins if Parker goes No. 1 to Cleveland.

Chris (Orlando) [via mobile]

Who do the magic go with at 4 now that Embiid slides?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:04 PM)

Rob Hennigan really liked Marcus Smart a year ago -- and I'm told he likes Dante Exum as well. I think there's a chance he'll be able to pick from both -- and I think that's the direction he goes even if Embiid is on the board at No. 4.

Deven (New York, NY)

Where's the best landing spot for Doug McDermott?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:05 PM)

I think Charlotte would be ideal. They need a shooter and have a good point guard in Kemba and a low-post presence in Al Jefferson. Also have a couple of athletic wings in MKG and Gerald Henderson. Would be the ideal fit.

Lopez (Indiana)

How hot is Tom Crean's seat and is there any chance he won't be the coach next season?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:06 PM)

Even though this is a draft chat, I'll answer this anyway. Crean needs to get IU back into the NCAA tourney or he'll go into the 2015-16 campaign with some serious pressure.

Jim (Memphis)

Can you tell the Harrison twins apart?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:07 PM)

If I watch both of them shoot the ball.

Martin (Indiana) [via mobile]

Am I crazy to think that Marcus Smart is the best player in the draft (should he declare?)

Jeff Goodman
  (2:07 PM)

Yes, you are crazy. Smart is a really good player -- but still needs to become a better shooter and also continue to work on his floor game.

Toby (Corner Office)

What is your take on the Kent hiring atr WSU? Do you think he can be successful in the Palouse?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:08 PM)

Another college question. Not a huge fan of the Ernie Kent hire. I think I gave it a C- in my annual coaching grades.

Jeff Badman (CA)

So, being a fan of Arizona and the Celtics, are you rooting for Aaron Gordon to the Celts?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:09 PM)

I am not a fan of either -- even though I went to Arizona and grew up in Boston. I love how hard Gordon plays -- and think he will be a 13 and 8 guy in the NBA in time. Not sure he fits well with the current Celtics team.

Deven (New York, NY)

If you were a GM, would you draft Embiid as a lottery pick or late lottery pick?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:09 PM)

I would take Embiid somewhere around the 4-6 range.

Keanu (Honolulu)

Hey Jeff, do you think the Bulls will wind up using both draft picks?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:11 PM)

No. Been told the Bulls are trying to deal both No. 16 and 19 in order to clear space to try and sign a big-time free agent such as Carmelo or maybe even LeBron.

Mike (Brooklyn NY)

Can Steph Curry and Love co-exist on offense with similar skills sets?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:11 PM)

Absolutely. Those two would be awfully fun to watch -- the issue, though, is defense. They'd just outscore teams in the 100s.

Mike (Brooklyn NY)

Assuming Carmelo leaves, Where do the Knicks go from here?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:12 PM)

The positive now is New York can sell Phil Jackson -- and many players still want to play in NY. The issue is that the franchise has been hamstrung lately due to bad contracts.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear JeffWhen could you see the Age Limit taking away?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:13 PM)

I think something will happen -- maybe not for next year's NBA Draft -- but the 2016 Draft. New NBA commissioner Adam Silver has made his stance clear on trying to get it changed where players would have to remain two years in college. Now he'll need to try and have some help from the two sides.

Deven (New York, NY)

The #1 overall pick in the draft will be. . . . .?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:14 PM)

The Cavs are torn right now between Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins. Parker had a poor showing in a recent workout in Cleveland -- and that has given Wiggins more momentum.

Ed (Queens Village)

Who will be first non BCS player drafted?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:15 PM)

Elfrid Payton. Louisiana-Lafayette. Fast point guard who can get to the basket and defend. High-character kid. Average perimeter shooter. Could wind up going in the Top 10.

Ruskin (Bismarck)

Where would the ideal fit for Elfrid Payton be? Are there any teams that could trade-up to get him?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:16 PM)

Payton would be good in Orlando at No. 12 if the Magic don't take Exum or Smart at No. 4. Minnesota could take him at 13, and Boston could grab him if he is still around at 17.

Martin (Indiana) [via mobile]

Where do you stand on Dante Exum? I personally think he's going to be the best player in this draft.

Jeff Goodman
  (2:18 PM)

I saw him for a couple days -- and he is extremely intriguing. 6-6, long and quick. Has a great first step and a nice mid-range game. He's the new breed of point guard -- athletic, not a pass-first guy. But there are concerns -- he hasn't played anyone in the past year. Graduated from high school in December and has been working out since February in California.

Kevin (Orlando)

Who do you see the Magic taking at 4 and 12?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:19 PM)

I think Hennigan grabs a point guard at 4 (Exum) and then gets a forward at No. 12. Maybe a guy like Rodney Hood -- someone with length who can shoot the ball.

Sung Sue(San Antonio) [via mobile]

Who is a better fit for the Cavs, Parker or Wiggins?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:20 PM)

I have maintained it's Parker because Cleveland needs shooting, high basketball IQ and toughness -- and also leadership. Wiggins is the superior defender, but Parker has more attributes that the Cavs need.

PJ (Boston)

No love for Sean Kilpatrick?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:20 PM)

Love Kilpatrick. I think he winds up going in the second round. His issue is that he's an undersized 2-guard. Good athlete, not a great one.

Max (Philly)

If Parker goes #1 to CLE, what's the likelihood Milwaukee could take Exum over Wiggins, meaning he drops to Sixers at 3?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:21 PM)

I don't think that's the way Milwaukee winds up going, but the Bucks definitely like Exum a lot. If I'm Milwaukee, I'd just swap picks with Philly and try and get something from the Sixers.

Brian [via mobile]

I saw you had Vonleh to Philadelphia. Is that your guess or based on any info?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:23 PM)

No concrete info -- I just don't see Philly taking Exum and pairing he and MCW together in the backcourt. They are too similar. I also don't think Hinkie can roll the dice on Embiid with a recovering big man already in the fold in Nerlens. Logic says that Hinkie will choose from Randle and Vonleh.

Victor (Minnesota )

Do you think that the Wolves want to trade Rubio? Makes no sense picking Payton if you're keeping him.

Jeff Goodman
  (2:24 PM)

Minnesota isn't enamored with Rubio. He's been a disappointment -- and is a sub-par shooter. He is also a weak defender, so Payton would upgrade at the position. Maybe Flip could package Love and Rubio.

Nathan (Houston)

With the draft being as deep as it is, which player(s) could you see dropping to Houston at 25 that would be great value picks?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:24 PM)

Jordan Clarkson would be ideal in Houston at 25. He's a long, athletic combo guard who would be an upgrade over what the Rockets have now (Lin, Beverly).

Alex (kentucky) [via mobile]

How does lebron and Carmelo opting out change the draft

Jeff Goodman
  (2:25 PM)

More teams that will make a run at LeBron will try and dump picks so they can clear cap space.

Noah Goodman [via mobile]

Hi Jeff, I'm actually you're second cousin (I'm Harold's son and Joel's nephew). Two part question: first, why aren't the Bucks sold on Exum at 2? Second, what are the 76ers chances at Wiggins if they don't move up?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:26 PM)

Always good to hear from a distant relative. Love it. Bucks aren't sold on Exum because 1) It's tough to pass on Parker or Wiggins 2) Exum hasn't played in front of anyone in almost a year 3) I'm fairly certain Bucks GM John Hammond has seen Exum play in a game just once. I don't think Wiggins gets to Philly at 3. He could go 1 to Cleveland, but I think it's more likely he goes 2 to Milwaukee.

Matt (Cincinnati)

Where do you see Semaj Christon going in the draft?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:28 PM)

He should have come back for his senior season. He's had little buzz about him -- and is a second-rounder. Needed to show NBA teams he could run the point.

Andrew (NJ)

What should the Sixers do at 3? Any chance Wiggins/Parker falls? Should they move up? What will they do?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:29 PM)

Sixers need to trade up or down. Find someone who LOVES Dante Exum and move down a couple spots and pick up another asset.

Chris (Boston)

With the Warriors seemingly in the lead for Love, should the Celtics try to trade Rondo to Sacramento for #8 plus spare parts and use picks 6, 8, and 17 and truly rebuild?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:30 PM)

You aren't talking to the biggest Rondo fan, but I think you need to get a player and No. 8. If Sacramento is offering Ben McLemore and No. 8, I am listening.

Tob (TX)

Thanasis Antetokounmpo is gaining momentum in mock drafts from mid second to possible mid 20's. Any chance he's available at 30 for the Spurs?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:30 PM)

I think he's definitely available at 30.

Dave KC [via mobile]

How likely are the Knicks to trade into the 1st round, and aside from OKC who is shopping their picks?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:31 PM)

Knicks are trying -- from what I have been told -- to get a first-round pick. They may be able to find someone now since some of the teams in the back end of the round may be looking to deal to clear up cap space.

Cody (Utah)

What is more likely to happen? Jazz staying put at 5, trading up, or trading down?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:32 PM)

I think the Jazz stay put. They can get a very good player at No. 5 -- I know they have Favors and Kanter, but they can add a guy like Randle, Vonleh or Gordon.

Jack (Chicago)

Who/what can Doug McDermott guard in the NBA?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:33 PM)

That's the big question. His defense has improved, but he'll have to be put in the right system. Hell never be a great defender, but he's smart enough to make the correct rotations.

Bob Koontz Illinois [via mobile]

who has more upside Aaron Gordon or Julius randle?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:34 PM)

I'd go with Randle. I think he can be a 18 & 8 guy in the league -- Gordon isn't as skilled on the offensive end, but will be the better defender.

Matt (Minneapolis)

How good do you think Cleanthony Early can be in the NBA?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:34 PM)

I think he can be a really good role guy for a team that goes deep into the playoffs -- or a starter for a non-playoff team. I'm a big fan of Cleanthony's.

Trent (Oakland, CA)

Who is James Young's NBA comparable? How good do you think he'll be in the NBA?

Jeff Goodman
  (2:35 PM)

I worry about James Young. Love his length, but he's not a great athlete -- isn't the knock-down shooter that many thought he was, and was inconsistent last season. I like a bunch of wings more than him in this draft.

Spud ((New jersey))

If zach lavine had a freshman season like Marcus smart did how high would he be drafted ??

Jeff Goodman
  (2:36 PM)

Um, but he didn't. He's super athletic, but I wish he had stayed in college. I think he'll spent all of next season on an NBA bench or the D-League. He needs to work on his handle, and his feel for the game concerns me.

Jeff Goodman
  (2:38 PM)

Thanks for swinging by. I appreciate it. Gotta run now and make some more calls to see what I can find out about some of these teams, who they are looking at -- and other trade discussions. Thanks again - Jeff
