Good morning, gang! We've got 60 minutes of fantasy chattage up ahead, so let's get to it, shall we? Second cup of coffee in hand... who is up first?
You worried about Strasbourg at all, He has had a seasons worth of bad outings in less than three weeks.
He's still striking batters out, so I'm not all that concerned. April is the time for pitchers to get the kinks out, so a few poor starts in a row doesn't get me too flustered.
In a 10-team mixed league, which side would you rather have? Wacha and Brad Miller for Brett Lawrie and Erick Aybar?
Assuming the need for SP doesn't factor in directly to your decision, I'd go with the latter duo.
Does it bother you to drop a bench player that makes another team better and will be picked up immediately?
If I believe my team gets better as a result of the drop, that's all I care about. Remember, just because you think the guy should be picked up immediately, we don't all evaluate players equally. He might not be.
I'm getting the impression that David Wright isn't going to have the greatest year on such a miserable team. Time to sell while you can?
Miserable team? They ARE over .500 which is more than most teams can say right now. Is he struggling a bit? Yes. Is it fixable? Yes.
Any concerns with Heyward's slow start or is it too early?
Never been a huge Heyward fan, so I'm not inclined to buy low here... but that's my own personal bias. If I did own him, I'd keep him. Injuries aside, I think you need to wait until May 1 to start to consider dropping disappointments.
In a 10 team league. Should I pick up Gregory Polanco and drop Granderson or Sizemore?
I can see stashing Polanco, but only if you've got players to play right now. In general, the "shiny new toys" - except in keepers - don't give you as much value as the veteran you're cutting to make room.
NL only your guess on who replaces Valverde?
For now, Valverde will stay. I can see Farnsworth and German being the candidates currently on the roster, with Vic Black lurking.
Trevor Bauer, worth a speculative add, looks like he may have finally figured it out. Better spec add: Bauer or Archie Bradley
It's Bradley to me. With the D-backs losing as much as they are - especially at home - either Towers has to bite the bullet and call him up or he's going to have to fire Gibson (if he doesn't get canned himself.) In the name of self-preservation, call him up by next homestand!
What's your take on favoring players with double headers? Advise maximizing ABs or still playing matchups?
By *still* you're implying that I play matchups in the first place, and I do not. In 3 or 4 ABs, there's simply no way to know for sure what will happen. I'm always going to start the player I think is better overall... BUT if one guy has a chance for 8 AB, he'll get the nod.
Have got Napoli but thinking of dropping him for someone like Hosmer or Sandoval. Your thoughts please.
Love Hosmer, and would have drafted him well ahead of Napoli - who has the type of injury that could affect his swing. Maybe it doesn't, but...
Where would you put George Springer in the OF rankings ROS?
Best case, he's a 20-20 guy who hits .270? I'm not sure the best case comes to pass, so maybe towards the back end of the top 30, given the SB.
Looking to trade Rizzo, Aramis Ramirez, Everth Cabrera, or Encarnacion for pitching depth. Who would you rather sell / trust for ROS at this point? I can spare the power and the speed.
I'd shop them all and see what I'm getting back in return. I mean, I'd *rather* lose Everth, but if Aramis gets me more in return than he does, guess who I'm sending away?
How will Chris Young's return hurt Eric Young, Jr.'s playing time? Any chance his current solid play makes him exempt from any outfield rotation?
Not much, while Lagares is out. And by the time he's ready to return, someone else will likely be limping.
In need of SP, who is the "worst" SP you would consider swapping Braun for straight up?
So early in the year. I'm not bailing for less than top 10 SP straight up.
Simmons or Boegarts ROS HxH non keeper. Thanks
Simmons for me. Though he will most definitely cool off.
Without a DL spot should I hold onto or drop Calhoun?
A month is a long time to have a dead roster spot. Unless you absolutely have no need for that spot, you have to cut him loose.
Worried about Holliday's slow start? Is age catching up?
Time catches up to us all, but the good news is that we haven't seen a ton of 0-fers here. He does have hits in like 8 of 9 games, so hopefully the power will kick in soon.
So you're saying you still believe in Braun until he proves otherwise? What about more days off than usual? What if the thumb zaps his power?
All of what you say is true. But that's why I don't think you can trade him right now - you'll be getting far less than he's worth, even with all those caveats. Now, if he goes 4-for-5 with a HR in his next start - that's the day to make the sales pitch.
No DL spot for Taijuan Walker until Chapman comes off the DL...cut him loose?
I'd try hard to see if someone with a DL slot will be willing to give you *something* more than just cutting him. But if you need the roster spot... we sometimes have to make tough decisions.
Stash Kris Bryant now in dynasty format?
Without a doubt. Of the "core four" on Cubs, he's the one I'm most excited about.
Any advice for someone who annually struggles with the backend of his rotation?
Most of us do. There aren't enough aces to go around. I think you try and have five decent guys for the last two spots and roll with the hot hand for a few weeks at a time. When we start pulling guys after one bad start and replacing them with others who have had one good start, we often end up with only bad starts.
Lower your expectations or be patient?
A little of both. He's starting to come around, but I wasn't looking at a top 10 guy at his position for 2014.
are you high on simmons or low on Bogaerts? I was really surprised by that.
High on Simmons. Defensively, you knew he'd be solid, but I wasn't expecting him to look good with the bat as well.
Dynasty Format Trade: Myers/Felix or Cargo/Verlander?
I don't think Myers belongs in that quartet.
looks like the league is adjusting to Jose Abreu - he can't extend for power on anything up and away or down and in. I'm selling before it's too late.
I don't think we've really seen Abreu do much at all for them to make adjustments on in the first place. 2 HR in Colorado? Well, it's Coors. Other than that, he's looked rather ordinary for some time now -- but I do think (hope) HE'LL make an adjustment soon.
Is Gregerson worth holding on to or will Jim Johnson get his job back soon?
If you're only holding on to him for saves, you can take the Frozen route with Luke...(don't make me sing)
Is this year year Stanton final fulfills his destiny as an elite fantasy OF? Has he added speed to his toolbox?
Even if he hasn't. The power is elite, and the Marlins are actually scoring runs.
Cashner or Tanaka for V.Mart, which SP would you want?
Tough call, because I do like Cashner a lot. I *think* Tanaka will survive that second trip around the league, but I don't *know* for sure. Let's go Cashner.
Braun for Rios? i would be getting rios, my team is lacking in power but scared of brauns thumb, pull the trigger?
I'd do that, primarily because I had the pair valued very close to each other in March.
Frozen route? Can you translate that into grownup, for those of us that don't watch cartoons.
Ask Adele Dazeem.
Blue Jays just announced that Janssen is temporarily shut down again with lower back soreness after yesterday's rehab appearance. Does he ever get his job back? Who leads the Jays in saves this year -- Santos?
The longer Sergio has the job, the harder it will be to take it away, so...
When will Baez get the call?
Javier is on the DL and the team is going to take it VERY slow with him... don't see it happening pre-ASB for sure.
I really want you to explain the Frozen reference!!!
Let it go, Charlie.
Who is R.A. Dickey? The Cy Young year a total fluke?
I don't think the Cy Young year was a fluke by any means, but he's not playing in the same stadium, nor is he playing in the same league. Having to face opposing pitchers helps the stats a lot.
who would you rather have ROS Dee Gorden/ Bonafacio?
Dee for me. I think Emilio's bonafides are starting to erode quickly.
Worried about Kimbrel's shoulder?
Worried isn't the word. He says he is fine, so I'll take it on faith he's fine.
You think Reyes, and Bourn can come back and return to form?
More optimistic on Jose than Michael, but yes... so long as they don't get hurt AGAIN.
Hey Mr. Met! Would you rather have Jim Johnson or papa grande ROS? Thanks!
Is there a third option? I'll go out to Oakland here, if arm is twisted.
Colabello, or Byrd, as a placeholder for Calhoun until he returns...
Ride the hot streak and go with CC.
Thoughts on Billy Hamilton ROS?
An OBP of .220 does not bode well. I'm skeptical that he does THAT much better.
That's all the time I've got for today, gang. Thanks for all the Q's. If I didn't get to yours, try me on Twitter (@ajmass) where I usually try to answer what comes my way. And please check out "Yes It's Hot in Here" if you're of the reading persuasion. Until the next time, when the Secret Service says "Jump!", you say "How high?"
