Chat with Todd Archer

Todd Archer
  (12:00 PM)

OK, folks. Let's get going. Thanks for stopping by. Lots to chat about ...

Kenyatta Adams (Roselle, NJ)

Good Day Todd. My questions is if Donald, Barr and Ealy are on the board who should the Cowboys take!! I say Barr because you can ever have to many pass rushers!! Have a great day!!!

Todd Archer
  (12:02 PM)

I think they go with Donald even with the signing of Henry Melton. Rod Marinelli believes the three-technique makes the defense go, so Donald would get the nod, IMO. The Melton deal is essentially one year right now, so if he doesn't pan out, then the Cowboys would be stuck in 2015. Barr wouldn't be a bad pick, but it seems like Donald has been the apple of their eye for a long time.

Rich (New Jersey)

Hi Todd - If Jerry Jones Cowboys are interested in Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald will Jerry trade up to get him or just take a chance he'll be there at # 16 or just go for safety Calvin Pryor, tight end Eric Ebron or offensive tackle Taylor Lewan ?

Todd Archer
  (12:04 PM)

I've said this a couple of times, but I think if they move up at all, it's only a couple of spots. I don't see a big move up. I can see them moving up for Donald, but lean more towards hoping he's there at No. 16. I don't think Pryor or Ebron would be their pick. Lewan is an interesting possibility. He'd be a good fit and maybe they move Doug Free inside to guard.

R Lank, MD [via mobile]

With romo 1 bad hit, and he's finished along with the uncertainty of orton why not draft a decent qb. at romo's age along with his injuries would u say that a high risk paying him that kind of money. i mean like u and jean said why pay age.

Todd Archer
  (12:06 PM)

When it comes to quarterbacks and left tackles, paying age doesn't seem as problematic for a lot of teams. I understand what you're saying about drafting a quarterback, but I don't see them going after a guy in the first two rounds. Maybe the third but more likely fourth or fifth. When you're picking a guy there, it's a projection more than a known commodity. Honestly, I think when Romo is done, whenever that is, the Cowboys will draft his replacement the following year and go with the guy.

Daniel (Houston TX)

Usually by this point we know who the number one pick will be, if your the texans who would u pick? WE NEED A QB!

Todd Archer
  (12:07 PM)

If I was making the pick, I'd take Clowney and then get a quarterback in the second round. As much as I like Manziel, I don't know that he's a sure-bet lock like an Andrew Luck or a Peyton Manning. If I have that fear, then I'd go with the best player.

Wayne (NC)

With the significant amount of lineman the cowboys brought in to the ranch the other day, is it safe to say thats there main priority early in the draft?

Todd Archer
  (12:08 PM)

Good call, Wayne. Of the names I know that came in 12 were defensive linemen. Seems pretty telling.

Daryl (jersey)

If the cowboys were to trade back do you think they would take the same BS deal as last year or demand a second round pick?

Todd Archer
  (12:09 PM)

Depends on how far they trade back, but they got the correct value on last year's trade with San Francisco according to their charts.

Juan (Texas)

At what point during the pre draft process do the cowboys usally put there board together?

Todd Archer
  (12:10 PM)

They have a board now but it's not finalized. That process starts about 2-3 weeks before the draft, so look for it to start happening soon.

Garrett (Williamsport, PA)

I love Easley in the 2nd, think the Boys pull the trigger? Multiple ACL's can be overcome, look at Thomas Davis in CAR.

Todd Archer
  (12:11 PM)

Davis is not the norm. More guys with multiple torn ACLs are not the same players. It's a risk. If healthy, Easley is a top-10 pick possibly. There are concerns over his knees long term and with how injuries have affected the Cowboys the last couple of years I wonder if they take injury risks this year.

Garrett (Williamsport, PA)

Did you get an idea of how the Davin Joseph workout went?

Todd Archer
  (12:11 PM)

Not sure if it was a work out or just a physical. His knees are a concern.

Ray (From Southside)

If the boys draft qb murray from GA; can they place him on PUP or IR since he is recovering from a torn acl, figuring that would save a roster spot and give him more time to heal up since he prob is not gonna play with romo/orton/ here, ala what the niners did with marcus lattimore??

Todd Archer
  (12:13 PM)

If he's not healthy, he can start on PUP. It's like the Bruce Carter scenario in 2011. Same deal. There would be no rush to get him on the field, but his knee injury is not as severe as the one suffered by Lattimore, so he wouldn't need as much time.

damon (rio)

Who's your fav all time cowboy?

Todd Archer
  (12:14 PM)

Hard to go against Roger Staubach. I didn't grow up around here, but he was the guy when I was younger. To me he is what every person - athlete or not - should aspire to be. He's a great man.

Emiliano (Rosario, Argentina)

In the first game of season 2013 vs Giants, The Cowboys D forced 6 turnovers and made 2 TD. What do you think happened after that? Injuries?

Todd Archer
  (12:15 PM)

You can't expect that to happen every week. I think they did a decent job on turnovers last year but the injuries caught up to them, so did poor play and poor coaching. It was a little bit of everything.

aaron (from work)

i know this might sound unpopular but i think the cowboys have to go for the gusto and trade up and get one of these elite playerswhether its clowney or mack. what would be the price to pay to get in the top 5?

Todd Archer
  (12:16 PM)

I don't have a chart in front of me, but I would say this year's top two picks and a premium pick in 2015. I just can't see them doing that. It would go against how they have operated this offseason in free agency. I wouldn't hold your breath for something like that.

Chris matteson [via mobile]

Do you think Dallas will ever be great again or is 8-8 going to be our standard from here on?

Todd Archer
  (12:17 PM)

Sure. It's all cyclical. The problem with the Cowboys is they missed their window in 2006-09. That was their best chance to be great and losing at home to the Giants in '07 was huge.

John C. (Tulsa)

Other than Marinelli, which assistant coach do you think is the best at his position of responsibility?

Todd Archer
  (12:17 PM)

I like Matt Eberflus. He's smart. He relates well to the players. I thought he would be the coordinator at one point in the offseason.

jordan (merrill wi )

I am friends with timmy Jernigan and went to high school with him (DT from Florida State) all im saying is from his visits with the cowboys and pics he posts there is no way the cowboys aren't courting him and if he is there at 16 they are drafting him. bet on it

Todd Archer
  (12:18 PM)

What I would say to this is I'm sure friends of the other prospects they brought in are thinking the same thing. I wouldn't rule out Jernigan, but it would go against their stated rules from last year when they passed on Floyd.

Weech (SoCal)

Hey Todd. I saw that Zack Martin also came in for a visit yesterday. If the top 3-4 (Donald, Ealy, Barr, HHCD) are gone, do you think Martin is the right choice there?

Todd Archer
  (12:19 PM)

He's been the guy I've touted for a month now. I think he'd be a great choice. Play him at guard as a rookie, maybe swing him out to tackle in 2015. Or if they keep Free, then let Martin play guard. He'd be a solid choice, a cornerstone lineman with Frederick and Tyron Smith

Todd(Lubbock) [via mobile]

I like Barr but why is he starting to drop in mock drafts?

Todd Archer
  (12:20 PM)

Maybe we're looking at different mocks. He's been in that 12-18 range for awhile, no?

Jimmy (Wyoming)

Does the extra two weeks for the draft actually help the team, or will it lead to "over analyzing" prospects?

Todd Archer
  (12:21 PM)

I hate the fact that it was pushed back. At least one team gave their scouts a one-week break to avoid just what you're talking about. I do think the draft is littered with over-analysis. Guys doubt what they have thought for weeks and months. It's crazy.

Naquan (Maryland)

Do you think terence williams will have a better year than many expect? his rookie numbers were very comparable to dez rookie numbers

Todd Archer
  (12:22 PM)

I think he'll be fine. If he stays healthy he'd be in that 60-65 catch, 950-plus yard season. That's pretty good when you're playing with guys like Dez Bryant and Jason Witten.

John C. (Tulsa)

Has anyone evaluated the mock drafts of the NFL experts against the actual success of those players? Are the NFL experts as capable as the scouts overall?

Todd Archer
  (12:23 PM)

Good question. I would say they miss as much as teams. There isn't a team that has this figured out. Some are better than others. I think Baltimore does a great job. But a lot of teams struggle with this.

James (Silsbee, TX)

Will Linehan get ball in our playmakers hands? I think Dallas at times let's defense dictate to their offense. I don't want to rely on Harris or Beasley winning a game or even a crucial 3rd down, because D doubles Dez and/or Witten.

Todd Archer
  (12:24 PM)

Excellent point, James. Too often in recent years the Cowboys answer to those guys being doubled has been to throw it to the other guys. It makes some sense, but why not do more to free up Witten and Bryant? I think Linehan will be much more creative in that department.

jordan (merrill wi )

what do you mean by stated rules when they passed on Floyd last year?

Todd Archer
  (12:25 PM)

Should have explained that better, sorry. That they wouldn't take a one technique in the first round. My sense is that's how they view Jernigan, as a nose tackle, not a true three-technique.

John C. (Tulsa)

How important is it for Dallas to make up for the loss of Alex Tanney this offseason?

Todd Archer
  (12:26 PM)

It was a loss? Hmm. I didn't view it that way. They have Brandon Weeden, so i guess that's a way to make up for it.

Weech (SoCal)

Todd, I admittedly haven't been keeping up with your draft work. So, in your opinion, Martin would be a better choice over the guys on defense?

Todd Archer
  (12:27 PM)

My bad. No, if they were wiped out on the defensive line, then I'd go Martin. I think I'd go Martin over Kony Ealy too.

Johnny (Detroit)

What current projected starter/solid backup might have a tough time making the team? I think Beasley could be upgraded, as he isn't much of a special teams guy.

Todd Archer
  (12:27 PM)

Justin Durant, James Hanna, especially if they draft a tight end. B.W. Webb. Those guys come to mind right away.

Emiliano (Rosario, Argentina)

is a bad idea take McCarron at 3rd round ?

Todd Archer
  (12:28 PM)

Might be too early there. I like McCarron's makeup and all but I think I'd look at a guy with a stronger arm.

Jimmy (Wyoming)

With the uncertainty surrounding DeMarco Murray's contract extension, is RB an underrated need for the Boys in this draft? Could they be looking at grabbing one in the third with the expectation that this year would be a learning year?

Todd Archer
  (12:29 PM)

They could look at a runner, but I think they can get a runner next year if things don't work out with Murray. Let me add this: if there is a runner in the third with a higher grade, then go and do it. But if it's the same as a position of need, then go with the need. All ties go to positions of need. I can get a running back any year and anywhere.

james hickson (ny)

If you could redraft the 2003 draft would you take tony romo over carson palmer?

Todd Archer
  (12:30 PM)

Wow, I like this one. I would say yes. If you compare what they have done, then I'd say Romo has been a better player.

free (cali)

Is the cowboys game in london a home or away game?

Todd Archer
  (12:31 PM)

It's an away game. The Jaguars are London's unofficial team.

terrell (ind)

Will morris claiborne win his starting job back?

Todd Archer
  (12:32 PM)

The Cowboys have to hope he does. And I like how you stated that. He has to win it back. They just can't give it to him. Scandrick played to well for that to happen. If Claiborne outplays him, then give him the job. Considering what the Cowboys did to get Claiborne two years ago, he MUST pan out.

Mike (Tampa)

Why doesn't darren woodson get more consideration for the hall of fame?

Todd Archer
  (12:33 PM)

Oh, I just think it's how it goes. A lot of teams have players they feel should get consideration. I think the longer it goes, the more Woodson should be appreciated. He was covering slot receivers back in the day. He is the kind of safety teams crave for now. Maybe he gets in one day, but I think it takes some time. I think he should be in the Ring of Honor too.

Frank (New York)

is this the year we trade up and fill the hole Darren Woodson left... I feel like the safety position is weaker than ever. My question is if its available will we miss out on a ballhawk at safety? i.e eric berry

Todd Archer
  (12:35 PM)

back to back Woodson questions. It's funny you say fill the hole when he left. That happened in 2004. That's a long time. If they can find a Woodson, sure, go for it. But there aren't a lot of those guys in the league now. I've said this before, but look at the guys Marinelli had at safety in Chicago: solid types. Not stars. You can win with guys like that. To me, I don't know that a star safety is a requirement. There aren't a lot of Earl Thomas types out there either.

Garrett (Williamsport, PA)

Do you think the Boys like Ealy enough to pull the trigger at 16? I'd be tempted to go OL first and look at 2nd round DE's

Todd Archer
  (12:37 PM)

That's how I would lean, Garrett. But they could see him as a guy that plays multiple spots. Is he athletic enough to be a right defensive end? I don't know. I'd go Martin if of the other D-linemen are gone and take Demarcus Lawrence in the second round.

Dee (Atl)

With murray going into his last year do you like a guy like carlos hyde in the second round, who bring power and vision similiar to eddie lacy?

Todd Archer
  (12:38 PM)

I don't see this. I was asked on Twitter if the Cowboys need a power back, and my immediate reaction was no. I think Murray is that kind of guy. Just ride him and go with it.

John C. (Tulsa)

Have you heard whether or not Bill Callahan is content to be with Dallas? Any word of the interaction with Scott Linehan?

Todd Archer
  (12:38 PM)

We haven't had a chance to speak with the coaches yet so I can't give a good answer on that one. If he's not over the disappointment, then that's on him. But I think the Cowboys did him wrong by not allowing him to leave.

Bart (San Diego)

Isn't the idea that the Boys won't take a one technique in the first, a really bad draft strategy to have? It let's every other team know that the Boys are looking at players (especially DT's) that have certain traits.

Todd Archer
  (12:40 PM)

I don't think the Cowboys are the only team with that philosophy. If you're drafting a first round player he better be a guy who is on the field all the time. A one technique generally comes off the field in passing situations. Maybe Jernigan is a little different, but teams want value in the first round and value means the ability to play every down.

Weech (SoCal)

Todd, lets talk about that logjam of 7th rounders. Since 4 of those are not tradable, do you think they should just stockpile DL and have bodies at camp so they can compete? I mean, every team brings in undrafted guys to compete at training camp. If anything, this is a shot for Dallas to scoop up some team's targets.

Todd Archer
  (12:41 PM)

I think they use those compensatory picks as a way to target their priority free agents. It could be at any position really. The Cowboys have done a good job with undrafted free agents and now they can guarantee getting a guy they really wanted. And maybe pay him less.

David (Columbia sc) [via mobile]

How is Crawford's recovery and has he started working out? Was the stage to big for Webb.

Todd Archer
  (12:42 PM)

Everything I've heard about Crawford says he'll be fine for the offseason program. He's a key piece to this defense this year. He has to play well. As for Webb, I think there was some of that. He just never really got comfortable and I'm not sure he will make an impact.

John C. (Tulsa)

How do the Cowboys avoid another draft like 2009? How could it have been so awful and why won't it happen again?

Todd Archer
  (12:43 PM)

Just an awful draft. How to avoid it? Don't draft for special teams. Listen to the scouts. Don't get cute with trades. It was a megastorm that all came together at once for the Cowboys.

tony (prosper)

I like storm Johnson in round 4, good compliment to murray?

Todd Archer
  (12:45 PM)

Yeah, maybe, but I don't think they go running back this year. I think they like Dunbar and Randle too much.

Hank Hill (Arlen)

Which 3 division opponents do you think have improved the most and is there a true favorite in this division? No one really stands out.

Todd Archer
  (12:46 PM)

I think they have all done a nice job filling some needs. The Giants have done the most, but you can argue they had the most to fill. I'd still go with Philly as the favorite but I don't see anybody pulling away from the rest of the division.

James (Silsbee, TX)

Dallas has to look at WR right? Dez's back and Williams only in second year. I like Harris and think Beasley is ok, but don't hope not to see them start games.

Todd Archer
  (12:47 PM)

I think so. Oregon's James Huff was in for a visit. He'd be a good piece in the middle rounds. They need a guy who can play outside if something happened to Bryant or Williams. Harris can do that a little bit but not enough. Beasley is a slot player.

Billy (Austin)

To follow up on Bart's question, do you think Jerry is going to show everyone the Board again this year? It shows specific players (and their traits), the round they have them in, and the guys that were left off (character concerns, medicals, etc.). Do they really think other teams don't get an advantage from seeing it or that they won't analyze what it says?

Todd Archer
  (12:49 PM)

Let's hope it's not leaked before the draft. Jerry doesn't seem to think it's a big deal that it comes out after the fact. I disagree. It lets teams know what you thought of a guy if you were looking at trade down the road. It lets the guy know if you liked him when he's a free agent. But I'm not sure they really care what other teams think of their draft board.

Scott (Westminster, CO)

Any insight into why Kyle 'Neckbeard' Orton is even considering retiring? Dude has the best job in the world, backup QB..

Todd Archer
  (12:50 PM)

Sometimes guys just don't want to play anymore and want to get on with their lives. But I can't tell you for sure. His agent says he's playing. The Cowboys believe he will play. Will he show up Monday for the offseason program? I don't know.

Joshua (Grapevine)

One of the key elements to protecting the QB, the fullback, has been non existent or noteworthy since the departure of Daryl Moose Johnston. This is one of those rare drafts where you could snag a very reliable one in the later rounds. Names like JC Copeland from LSU and Trey Millard from OU are some that come to mind. Could you see Jerry and co. finally getting a bruiser to assist Tony, Demarco, and others?

Todd Archer
  (12:51 PM)

Nope. If they go with a fullback, they'll stick with Clutts. If you're keeping a fullback in to block in the passing game, who are you taking out? A third receiver? Escobar? Murray? To me, the fullback is not a requirement. I might be wrong, but that's just me.

Frank (New York)

Since 2004 our safety hasn't been all around good players. Roy Williams could hit but couldn't cover Jerry Jones... The last 5 super bowl winners safeties were Thomas, Reed, Rolle, Collins, and Harper. To me its more overlooked on our team than anything. Teams go deep on us and shred us every time. An upgrade may give us the edge we need to at least get in the playoffs. Are Church and Heath really our answer?

Todd Archer
  (12:52 PM)

Church is one of the answers. He's a good player. They're not giving up on Wilcox yet. I think it was interesting Jimmie Ward was a pre-draft visitor. He could be an option.

Shawn (Ashe Co. NC)

Hi Todd, Who you got in Cowboys Draft as #1?

Todd Archer
  (12:53 PM)

If Donald is there, take him. If he's gone but Barr is there, take Barr. If those two are gone, then go Lewan or Martin.

Joel (Houston)

Ahmad Dixon would be a pretty good add for the Cowboys at safety in the later rounds. Maybe round 5. He was one of the main leaders on a Baylor defense that did pretty well last year. He brings attitude as well. His hits can be controversial, but they will make an impact. What are your thoughts on him?

Todd Archer
  (12:53 PM)

Can he cover? Does he move well enough? I don't want a guy who just hits. I want a guy who can play in the middle of the field.

John C. (Tulsa)

During the football season, do Calvin, JJT, Tim and you take on specific coverage responsibilities?

Todd Archer
  (12:54 PM)

JJT is a columnist so he moves on to other sports. Tim also covers the Mavericks, so that's his main focus in the winter. Calvin and I focus on the Cowboys all year.

Keenan Jenkins (West Covina)

What are the chances Barr is the guy the cowboys take, also do we draft a QB this year in any of the rounds.

Todd Archer
  (12:55 PM)

I think he's on their list. As for the QB, if it's a clear difference in grades, then I think they look at one in the fourth round (maybe third) but I wouldn't say it's a lock they take one.

Tom (New York)

Are Boys going to rely on the draft to fill the vacant backup G and C positions? They currently have no depth behind the starters.

Todd Archer
  (12:56 PM)

I think that's why they looked at Davin Joseph. He could be that guy. And Bernadeau is the backup center. But you're right they need depth in the interior.

Todd Archer
  (12:57 PM)

Folks, thanks for all of the questions. Had fun. We'll be back on the normal Wednesday schedule next week. If you have more questions, hit me up on Twitter (@toddarcher) and I'll put them up on the blog in posts on Friday and Saturday. Have a great day.
