Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! Tiger's chipping, Lydia wins, and Seung-Yul Noh wins soon enough. I wanna know what you think would happen to a golfer who made remarks like the Clipper's owner made... this is gonna be good. BRING IT!!!

Guy's Burt (Guybert)

SOURCE: I'M NOT SMART!

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

That source has been confirmed.

Griffin (NY)

David Duval sighting this past week. How much in earnings will it take for Duval to get his card for 2015?

Ken (VA)

Michael, T25 for DD. He has enough game to get his card back...he needs reps. You have any pull at Colonial or the Byron Nelson?...you have to get him in one of those. DD!!!! Seriously, does a T25 performance 'help' his cause with future sponsor exemptions?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

If I had any pull at those events I'd definitely try and help DD get an invite. I have waivered just for a sec but I can't stop believing that Duval can find a way into the winner's circle. Stricker was 39 when he turned it around, DD is 42 and would be an huge story.

Mike (Boise)

Hey Michael,First time post, and I love the chats. I think I may have picked up that you have a little Philly blood in you, but I could be mistaken Have you been watching the NHL playoffs? If so, do you think Giroux can get the Flyers a win in Game 6 tomorrow? Also, were you golfing with him when he hurt his hand in the off-season?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

I'm born and raised in Lancaster, PA. I'm a huge Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers fan. I think they can win game 6 at home.

Nemes (P-Town)

Which is the better job: Being Lydia Ko's caddie or Michelle Wie's caddie?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Wie's. Lydia is trying different caddies every week so your job would only be for a week.

Justin (Wondering)

I'm in the shower! I'll send you something soon.

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

No, no... get all done first, then join the chat.

Al (Pensacola)

Good afternoon MC, enjoy the chats. More suprised young Noh held up with the lead, or Keegan Bradley shooting himself out of tournamnet once tied for the lead?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Not surprised at all. The kid has got great game and Keegan's putter hasn't been great lately and it cost him Sunday.

Tom (Syracuse)

Did you caddie this week? How was it?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

No. But I played in the pro-am on Wednesday. Couldn't stay for the week though.

Geoff (Easton, PA)

Noh did two "shocking" things yesterday... finally breaking the drought of American's/Aussies winning all the tournaments... AAAAAAND held onto a Sunday lead and actually won! Good for the kid...

Geoff (Easton, PA)

Huge Rangers fan here.... Flyers are going DOWN tomorrow! =)

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

We'll see!

james (kansas city)

is golf a good sport

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

Ask other athletes from other sports what they think. They all say the same thing. yes

Wally (Portland)

MC, Last week you asked why we would have a problem with 15 inch holes to attract new golfers or bring back old ones. I assume you see this as an offshoot of golf, not as a replacement, in which case I think it is a good idea. One suggestion I did not like was having both holes on the same course, and players get to make the choice which one they are playing. I think the two should be entirely separate, even to the point that the 15 inch game has a different name than 'golf'. I think certain 9 hole and less successful 18 hole courses would do well to change their course to full time big hole golf, but I don't want to see it where I am playing!

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

Completely agree. One course, one size hole. I can enjoy both and take newbies and kids to the 15" hole course to learn and have fun.

Bill New Jersey [via mobile]

The mean streets of Lancaster?! Get the horse and buggies out of the way. Dutch Wonderland opens soon and gotta get the outlet shopping on!

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

I got kicked out by the Amish for having cable tv in the barn! HAHA

Fitz (NC)

MC, I'm going to my first pga tournament on Saturday. What holes should I make sure to see at Quail Hollow?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Make sure to hang at 13th (par 3) for a little, then try and get a good spot on 8th tee where you can see 7th green! And hang by the putting green watching all the beautiful people walk by. Charlotte has the best looking crowd on tour.

Nemes (P-Town)

Read that Noh had his caddie for the first time for the win, will they stay together or is he auditioning?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

A win usually gets you the job if you're a tour caddie. Now if it was a local caddie from that course (Noh's was not) then taking the caddie on tour doesn't happen a lot.

Paul (Portland, OR)

MC! I know there was talk last chat I believe, about viewership of the LPGA, but folks should have been watching yesterday. These players hit such great shots. Stacy Lewis and Jenny Shin stick their iron shots on 18 down by one stroke. 17 year old Lydia Ko, looking in trouble in the rough sticks hers too, then calmly sinks the putt for the win. Lewis and Ko were practically playing match play since Saturday, then Shin snuck up on them at the end too! Great stuff.

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

I just did a video blog about that. Don't be "that guy" when you can see what could be the greatest year in Women's golf ever.

Bill New Jersey [via mobile]

Have you noticed improvement in Fowlers swing since changing to Butch and...na just kidding, how's the grub in South Carolina?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

HAHA! Good one. Unfortunately they're in NC this week and I'm home in FL. But I can find good food anywhere!

Keith H (Seattle )

"Soon You'll Know!" OK, why doesn't New Orleans draw more of the top ranked players? We know the food is great...I'm thinking it's more like Quail Hollow and The Players the next two weeks and nobody wants to go three in a row. Thanks again!

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

It's definitely because of the date on the calendar. Charlotte, Jax, Colonial, Memorial, US Open... guys gotta be really careful not to burn out before US Open

Steve (East Coast)

Let's say Lydia Ko gets an offer (sponsors invite, etc.) to play in a future PGATour event...take it or pass?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

PASS!

Bob (Iowa)

MC More people should be watching the LPGA for the sheer fact that they play the game most amatuers play as far as distance is concerned. They could learn more watching the ladies play than the guys which is now a pure power game for the most part.

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Completely agree

Mike (Philly)

MC, have you ever played at Lebanon Valley? Played there for the first time last weekend, think it would be a very pretty course come Fall!

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

I've have played there and Iron Valley as well.

Matt (Houston)

when a player earns $ from the weekend, how long does it typically take them to get paid from the tournament?

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

direct deposit in their bank account on Monday morning

George (Ohio)

There's some rumors going around that Tiger left Foley, any truth to this?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Foley has said that he is still Tiger's coach. That's all we know on record right now. Anyone can start a rumor.

Shoshana (Cambridge)

So what are the chances ESPN sends you to cover an LPGA event this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

I'm covering the Women's US Open and pushing to cover at least two more events later.

Aaron (Wisco)

Golf Channel is reporting Tiger is shooting for the Open Championship for his return. I know you have been a big advocate of him taking the year off, what do you think?

tin foil (hat)

MC - as a former caddie, what is your take on the rumors that Tiger is trying to return for the British Open at Royal Hoylake in Scotland?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

I ask everyone the same question when it comes to that... Would you rather Tiger just hurry back and be 70% or take a long time off and come back at 100%? The hard part is, how do you tell Superman not to fly for awhile?

Tom (Verona, WI)

Good afternoon, MC! Wonder why you left the 76ers off your Philly team list. Just not feeling the NBA?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

I like the NBA but I'm not all in with the Sixers. I like individuals (Chris Paul, Steph Curry[Golfers]) more than teams. Like watching good games even without a dog in the fight.

Steve (East Coast)

Afternoon MC. Wells Fargo this week, this event has to be in the top 5 for best non-Majors, right?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Easily, yes

Joanie (upstate NY)

I heard the greens were in terrible shape at the PLAYERS from Steve Flesch on twitter , some sort of screw up. Have you heard anything ? If true someone's head should roll!! Going to be lookin you up next week MC.

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

People need to remember how brutal this winter was, golf courses all over took bad hits and there are not gonna be perfect tracks ANYWHERE after this winter. Even Augusta painted their greens.

Craig (Rickie Fowler's hometown)

How come more players dont sell their shirts or hats with all the sponsor logos on them. Other than Poults nobody else does it.Are they restricted?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

Poults owns part of the company so it's a good thing for him. Other golfers have companies that don't normally split profits. Puma/Titleist/KentWool aren't sharing. Makes it harder for golfers to sell there own "brand"

Milan (Denver)

Top 5 non-majors:The Players, WGC Bridgestone, Memorial, BMW Championship, Tour Championship

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

I'd say: Wells Fargo, Players, WGC-Bridgestone, Memorial, Honda

Geoff (Easton, PA)

Tour Championship? Meh.... only a 30 player field...

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

yeah I ain't feeling that one either

Janet (New York)

Tiger's agent says he is treating this recovery with the focus on playing at the highest level over the next 10 yrs, not the next 10 weeks! Given that comment, why would anyone think he'd come back less than 100%! That and his drive to pass Nicklaus? Can't unless you are fully healthy!

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

Because he won on a broken leg and has tried to play thru injury so many times before that it becomes a behavior and habit.

Cal (Altoona) [via mobile]

No Woods update? How come you ESPN guys never want to talk about Tiger? ;)

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

BAAAHAHAHA! That made me bust out laughin. Thanx

Shoshana (Cambridge)

If both Ko and Noh offered you a caddie job, whose bag do you take?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

Ko if it was full time.

Justin (Wondering)

This weekend a commentator said that when it's windy he favors not using a line on the ball to line up putts. He said to go by feel instead. When do you like to use the line on the ball?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

I never have used the line to putt but I've caddied for a guy who did. Doesn't matter to me.

Shoshana (Cambridge)

Quail is a nice tournament, but don't see most tour players putting it on their calendar before 3 no-cut WGC's, and the first three play-off events

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Ask players which event is more like a major... Quail Hollow trumps ALL the WGC's. Money and major is two different things. Notice Kapalua isn't in there and it's free money too.

Benjamin (New York)

Let's be honest, the LPGA Tour is SO much more watchable than the PGA Tour these days. Until Tiger returns, it's not even close. On the LPGA Tour, you actually get the matchups you want.

Shawn (Detroit)

What is the hardest course physically and mentally you have ever caddied?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

Physically Reno, NV. Mentally US Open by far.

luke (los angeles)

Michael, so if Sterling was a golfer how would this play out and what is your take on his rant?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

He'd be out of golf. As far as his rant, I think there are lots of people who would say those things when they don't know they're being recorded. Best punishment is for him to not be able to sell the team until it goes belly up. Make him pay players and coaches while he's got no money coming in.

Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)

@Luke... ask Fuzzy Zoeller...

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

But Fuzzy was drunk and trying to be funny. Not the owner of a team. Fuzzy did lose all his sponsorship. I know Fuzzy personally, I can tell you he is no racist.

Bob (Iowa)

what is the funnest story that happened while you caddied that you can tell

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Almost got into a fight with Brandle Chamblee on the course caddying at my first PGA Tour event in San Antonio... was caddying for Steve Hart. It's funny now... and Brandle & I are friends now too

Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)

What do you think Clippers FANS should do? at what point do they harm the players while trying to hurt the racist owner?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

If you go to the game, you're paying the owner. Period.

Lorraine (NYC)

Does Tiger Woods have a good relationship with you and all other ESPN Golf Analysts? Any he does not?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

He's not a fan of Rick Reilly and Reilly is not a fan of Tiger either.

Dan (Lancaster, PA)

MC - what'd you think of Iron Valley? One of my favorite public courses around - great layout.

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Awesome layout!

Geoff (Easton, PA)

The Players Championship purse is $10 Million... reeeeeeediculous!!

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

Crazy

JA (Philly)

Phil is about to start a critical stretch that leads up to Pinehurst, starting this week in Charlotte. What would you like to see out of him this week? He generally is squirrely coming out of multi-week breaks, so I am thinking making the cut and a top-25 is a reasonable goal.

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

I believe a top ten is not out of the question this week and it'll be a great prequel for the US Open for him.

Surrwadd (P-Town)

toughest to caddie physically was Reno Golf Club? Or a course in Reno? I'm confused...

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Tournament. Reno/Tahoe Open played at La Triomphe (spelling). BRUTAL WALK

Tom (Verona, WI)

Thanks for chat, MC! Congrats on making the list of the 100 most influential ESPN.com golf writers

Michael Collins
  (4:03 PM)

Told ya that would go really fast! Same Bat Time, Same Bate Channel next Monday! Just wanna say thank you, to my friend and colleague Chris Ramsay, for sharing your dad with us for a while. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Your dad's legacy lives thru you.
