Chat with Jamison Hensley

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:00 PM)

Thanks for joining the chat. Sorry I had to move it to Thursday this week. I was covering the Ravens pre-draft presser on Wednesday, and I couldn't do our usual time. Just a friendly reminder that you don't have to post the same question multiple times. That usually doesn't get that question answered. Now, let's get to the questions.

Rich (New Jersey)

Hi Jamison, Will the Ravens drafting a running back since they have Bernard Pierce, Justin Forsett & Cierre Wood behind Ray Rice ?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:02 PM)

There is a very, very good chance of the Ravens taking a running back at some point in the draft. They have two picks each in the third and fourth round. I expect them to use one of those selections on a running back. There's good value in those two rounds.

dylan (tucson arizona)

what are the chances of ray rice getting suspended

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:04 PM)

I would be surprised if Rice didn't get suspended by the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell has taken a hard-line stance with the personal conduct policy. He can discipline a player even if he isn't arrested or convicted. So, if Rice avoids conviction, he is expected to receive some sort of punishment from the NFL.

alex (sonora)

prediction on games Rice will be suspended? i say 2 and with the appeal he will only miss 1

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:05 PM)

That would be pure conjecture at this point. I can't see him getting a suspension for more than four games. This is his first time getting in trouble, but it's a matter that the league will take very seriously.

Brock (Illinois) [via mobile]

Do you think the ravens might select a punter in the later rounds?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:06 PM)

The Ravens are still behind Sam Koch. If they bring in competition, it'll be an undrafted rookie. The Ravens have a lot of needs, and they'll need to use all eight of these picks on offense and defense to make this team better.

Victor Los Angeles [via mobile]

Is it possible for Ed reed to come back to Baltimore as a player or as a coach.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:07 PM)

No to both. Reed's done as a player. That was obvious last season. If Reed decides to coach, it will be at the high school level. He really likes helping youth, and he was very active in his annual football camps.

bradblackandgold (California)

Do you have a sense how sports writers, draft prospects, and free agents are feeling about the draft being pushed back this year? I know it has felt too dragged out for me, I can't imagine what it is like for the people really invested.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:09 PM)

From people I have spoken to about this, no one has said that they like the draft in May. This was a misstep by the league. Hopefully, the NFL doesn't repeat it.

Dash (Detroit)

Are the ravens going to trade their 17th pick? If not who they taking with that pick?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:10 PM)

My gut says the Ravens are going to stay at No. 17 because they can get an impact player. Who will that player be? Tell me the 16 players who are off the board, and I can make a better prediction.

Vick Watts California [via mobile]

How will marlon brown do this year? He was a great pick up last year!

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:12 PM)

Marlon Brown is a good No. 3 receiver who will play a big role in the red zone. Brown may not finish with as many catches as last season (49), but he will make an impact. He's a solid prospect. Let's just not put unrealistic expectations on him.

Ravenous128 (Columbia, MD)

How likely is it that the Ravens select a backup QB before the fourth round? Who are the likely prospects they'll consider there? Thanks.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:16 PM)

My projection is the Ravens will start looking in the fifth round, but the Ravens may have to take one in the fourth round. It was strange that the Ravens brought in Eastern Illinois' Jimmy Garoppolo, who could go as early as the second round, for a pre-draft visit. Other candidates: LSU's Zach Mettenberger (fourth round), Alabama's A.J. McCarron (fourth round), Virginia Tech's Logan Thomas (sixth round) and Ball State's Keith Wenning (sixth round).

Navarone (Maryland)

Which prospect would you say the ravens would actually move up in the draft for if they see him falling?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:17 PM)

The only one I can see is Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan.

Rants N Ravens (Trinity, FL)

I know there's been tons of speculation about the RT position on the Ravens, but what do they do if God forbid something happens to LT Eugene Monroe?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:18 PM)

Given the inexperience at right tackle, the Ravens would have to move Kelechi Osemele from left guard to left tackle. He has the ability to do that. It's not ideal, but it's a better situation that starting Rick Wagner or a rookie there. The Ravens could put Ryan Jensen or Jah Reid at Osemele's spot at left guard.

Sean (NY)

Hey JH looking at the ravens schedule I count 12 wins..how many did you count and what looks like the toughest game so far to you?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:19 PM)

I'm on record with 10 wins, but I do hate giving predictions before the draft and preseason are over. What helps the Ravens is playing weak divisions like the AFC South and NFC South.

George (NYC)

In your years covering the Ravens, you're probably as likely as anyone else to see through the pre-draft smokescreen. What were the things that stood out to you most from their press conference and why?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:21 PM)

My impression is the Ravens will stay at No. 17, even though they said "we love picks" about 100 times. Honestly, there wasn't much said Wednesday to really interpret. It was one of the less insightful pre-draft pressers.

Briscoe (Glen Burnie)

Wouldn't it be a bit of a waste to draft a RT (Martin) at 17? Oher was taken 23rd, and he's considered a bust for amounting to a so-so RT.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:22 PM)

At first, I saw Zack Martin as a "Ravens-type player." The more I looked at him, he projects more as a guard than a tackle. I don't see the Ravens taking someone like that at No. 17. The Ravens could surprise people with the position they address in the first round.

Matthew (Baltimore)

I read the post about not to assume the Ravens trade back but doesn't it just make sense with the 49ers who could grab Cooks or Beckham and than even with the 30th pick they could have options and trade back again to say the Vikings who have 2 #3s this year and can jump back into the first to grab say Bridgewater and then the Ravens are sitting with plenty of picks

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:23 PM)

As assistant GM Eric DeCosta said, you can get impact players in the middle of the first round and you hope to get solid starters at the bottom of it. Sometimes, getting an impact player is more valuable than more picks.

Sean (NY)

Do you expect Tyrod to be the #2 starter when the regular season starts?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:25 PM)

If the Ravens draft a QB, then I see Taylor as a backup QB. If the Ravens don't draft a quarterback, they may have to add a free agent like David Carr. Then, the chances of staying as a backup aren't as strong.

Jacob (NYC)

Ebron, RT, and S are the picks most commonly associated with the Ravens 1st rounder. What is your dark horse pick? I say CB.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:26 PM)

Cornerback is a good pick. Ozzie talked about how he has to draft for the future as much as for this year. Taking a CB in the first round would be an investment. The rookie could be the No. 3 corner this year and be groomed to be a starter. Lardarius Webb could be a salary-cap casualty in 2015.

Scott (Westminster, CO)

What's Ray Lewis up to these days?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:27 PM)

He's an analyst for ESPN. He'll be on ESPN's draft coverage along with Chris Berman and Mel Kiper.

Stephen boston [via mobile]

Hi Jamison. Really liked the look of Omar Brown last year. What are the chences of him making the roster especially if we pick up Pryor in the draft?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:29 PM)

The backup safeties will have to earn their spots on special teams. Players such as Omar Brown, Bryden Trawick and Anthony Levine all have great shots at doing that.

Jason (Houston) [via mobile]

Who do you see making the biggest leap in terms of production from last year to this upcoming year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:30 PM)

A good bet is a defensive tackle such as Brandon Williams or Kapron Lewis-Moore. If the Ravens don't draft a DL, Williams and Lewis-Moore should get a significant amount of playing time.

George (Lancaster, PA)

A report surfaced this week that the Ravens wanted to pick Brady Quinn several years ago. Not that I'm advocating this, but the Ravens have said they want to add another QB, and he's out there....

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:30 PM)

They wanted Brady Quinn the prospect in 2007, not the unemployed journeyman in 2014.

George (NYC)

Kyle Fuller to the Ravens in the first round?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:31 PM)

I wouldn't rule it out.

OlderRavenFan (Middle River Md.)

What do you expect from Aaron Mellette this year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:31 PM)

Making the team is going to be a challenge.

Ryan (Clemson)

Could Deone Buccanon be a fit to complement Matt Elam?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:32 PM)

I can see Washington State's Deone Bucannon turning out to be the best safety in this draft.

elijah (indiana )

what do you think the chances are that the Ravens draft Terrance West the RB from Towson in the 3rd or 4th round

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:32 PM)

Ravens are going to look for a running back in the third and fourth rounds. If West is there in the fourth round, he would be a steal at that point.

David(California) [via mobile]

Thoughts on CJ Mosley?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:33 PM)

Instant starter and Pro Bowl ability.

dee (california)

your ravens mock draft?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:33 PM)

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay do plenty of them for ESPN.com.

Al [via mobile]

If both OT Lewan and TE Enron are available at 17, who do you think the ravens would pick up?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:33 PM)

Lewan. No question.

Adam (DC)

How often will the Ravens use a two tight end spread offense?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:34 PM)

Two tight ends will be the Ravens' base offense.

David (Greenbelt)

Going off Sean from New York's question, if they are drafting a quarterback and keep Taylor, they would have to carry 3 quarterbacks. Are the issues with Taylor that pressing that they will starting being a three quarterback team?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:35 PM)

Taylor is entering the final year of his contract, so you have to prepare for the future. It would be a good time to groom a rookie. And you need Taylor because the Ravens aren't going to put a rookie as the top backup to Joe Flacco.

Pedro (Brazil)

in which position will kelechy osemele play this year? LG or RT?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:35 PM)

Left guard is his preferred position.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (3:37 PM)

Thanks for all of the questions today. Let's see if we can squeeze another chat in before the draft. Have a great rest of the week.
