What's up? Chilling in Houston for a minute before covering Rangers-Astros game tonight. Let's roll.
was demarcus Lawrence worth trading up for in the 2nd round in your opinion?
I wrote a column about it. You can peep it here http://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/10920046/2014-nfl-draft-demarcus-lawrence-right-choice-dallas-cowboys-forget-demarcus-ware-last-seasonI liked the move
Of defense players Boys drafted which will start on Opening Day?
martin and Lawrence
JJT I enjoy your insight, but all we ever hear when it comes to the draft is you draft the best player available on your board. Jerry comes out and says he had Manziel number one on their board, so your telling me you pass over Manziel b/c you have a 34 year old qb coming off of two back surgeries in the past year who has on numerous occassions failed to deliver in the clutch and is past his prime years of playmaking ability. I don't get it. Dead money is dead money...I know the ramifications, but if Romo gets hurt and is out for the entire season you have the same situation of paying a guy who is not on the team. Not saying Manziel is the be all end all, but this seems like the Randy Moss situation all over again. The media was on Jerry about all the problems Irvin had gotten into and Moss had some red flags so he passed up the higher ceiling player for the safer pick. What did Green Bay and Indy do in similar situations...Rodgers sat behind Farve for 2 1/2 years before playing and the Colts cut Manning b/c of his injury and despite the cap hit. I know you said it would have been a wasted pick and the circus it would have brought, but the circus has been here before w/ the white house, Tank Johnson, Pac Man, and TO, do you think it would have been any worse? Is Martin going to make more of a difference than Manziel? Last time I checked playmaking qbs win games...even if Martin's ceiling was Jackie Slater or Anthony Munoz...how many Super Bowls did those guys win? Sorry for the long rant.
I don't know how many different ways to explain this. Romo IS YOUR QB FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS MINIMUM because his $108 million deal makes him untradable, uncuttable and unbenchable. It doesn't matter if you think it was a dumb contract or if you thnk Johnny Football is great. Getting rid of Romo would decimate the salary cap, so it's not happening. A good team could draft a QB and let him sit. A team with as many holes as Dallas doesn't have that option.
Hi JJT, what are your impressions of Roughned Odor so far?
he's only played 5 games. You don't learn about a player until he goes into a deep slump and you see how he handles it and how he recovers
Hello, you think Wash has any plans to give some of the starting pitchers extra rest like Darvish? Ross is looking like he could use a break.
Ross is get extra time this week
JJT, is Matt Harrison back to his pre injury form or should we expect more inconsistencies?
Good talk with Matt yesterday and he's working his way back from a difficult injury. No, he's not all the way back. He's making solid progress. He probably won't be all the way back until next season, but he's a good pitcher and he'll battle this season while he figures it out
Hello JJT, how many Ranger games do you go to a year and where do you like to watch the game from?
30-40 home games because the primary portion of my vacations comes in the summer and when you throw in training camp I miss most of June and July. As for going to a game as a fan, I take my son once a year. I try to sit 15-20 rows up on 3B or 1B line
Hi, Dallas made a great choice in Zack Martin in the first round and than drafted players that could help immediately or add depth at certain positions, which players will make an immediate impact for Dallas ?
Martin will start and Lawrence should start. The 4th round pick should be impact player on special teams and the WR Street should contribute
are the cowboys being disrespected already being home underdogs week 1 ? I consider those two teams evenly matched and evenly talented so the boys shouldn't be considere underdogs ! what says you
dude, we don't even know who's on the final roster yet. The lines haven't even been set yet. Love your passion, but relax bro
GM JJT - I know they got the guy they wanted by trading a #2 & #3 to move up in the 2nd round - but that type of move is made by a team only NEEDING a piece. Dallas is not good enough for that. Had they stayed put - they could have had Kony Ealy in the 2nd and Kareem Martin in the 3rd - two DEs. Demarcus Lawrence may pan out and the other 2 be busts - but awful lot of pressure Lawrence now. What do you think?
The Cowboys spent 6 months putting their draft board together. They concluded there were 3 pass rushers in this draft: Clowney, Barr and Lawrence. The first two lasted 9 picks. They didn't view either of those players in the same class as Lawrence as a pass rusher. You can agree or disagree, but that's what their board said. here's my column on the decisionhttp://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/10920046/2014-nfl-draft-demarcus-lawrence-right-choice-dallas-cowboys-forget-demarcus-ware-last-season
What are your thoughts on the Cowboys deciding not to pursue Jeffcoat? Thanks.
nobody else pursued him either. He's like Michael Sam, an outstanding college player who's an NFL tweener without a position. He doesn't have any special skill, he's just a good player. He'll get shot with Seattle
Who do you think are the Mavs top 5 targets in the off season?
No idea. I don't know if they know yet. I would suspect Gortat and stephenson are high on it
I'm going to say this again. We all have freedom of speech. But when you represent an organization and you're a public figure you can't say whatever you want to say because you affect your employer's brad. If I said tweeted the same thing he did, I'd have probably faced the same repercussions. It's about affecting the brand. No more, no less.
Given the Mavs tradition of success with players like Marion and Carter will it make sense for them. to go after Paul Pierce in summer? Wouldn't it be interesting since there is this connection with Dirk from their draft?
Noooooooooooooooooo!!!! the team needs to get younger - not older
How does jerruh justify trading away a 3rd round pick to take Laurence when a more talented all american DE fell out of the draft? (Jeffcoat)
250+ players were selected and Jeffcoat wasn't one of them. He's not as talented as you think. He's a great college player. A lot of great college players don't have pro skill set
JJT, If Romo suffers another season ending injury this year, and the Cowboys miss the playoff, does JG still get fired? So much of NFL success is attached to the QB play, seems he might get another reprieve if that occurs.
can we see how season goes before we fire Garrett? It's just too hypothetical? What if they went 10-6 and missed the playoffs like Cardinals. What if they went 8-8 and made playoffs?
Who's projected to be the other starting dt next to melton when training camp starts: Nick Hayden?
Hayden or Crawford, but they'll be rotating
How would you grade the draft
I'm down with grading drafts. I just watch them play. That tell us all we need to know
Whatup man? is it possible we could have drafted Johnny football and then traded him for a 1st or 2nd round future picks?
no. cause you would've had no leverage. They were at 16 and no one wanted him right then
Im confused, the cowboys say Lawrence was the last RDE left to make an impact after clowny and barr, barr went 9th why not trade back to acquire Lawrence at the end of the first especially once they missed shazier, what's so bad about running out of time to fall back one spot and give yourself more time for a trade?
atlanta wanted him at 37
Reports are the mavs are considering trading for Chandler, why? He makes nearly 15m, dalembert makes less than 4, had a better season across the board playing 20 more games, had better per 48 minutes stats, better defensive rating and better player efficiency rating, I agree we need an upgrade at center, but Chandler aint that, now pau, gortat, yes
I haven't seen those reports
How many teams had Demarcus Lawrence as the 3rd best defensive end behind Barr and Clowney?
doesn't matter. How many dudes thought your wife was beautiful? Doesn't matter. You thought she rocked. Everyone else's opinion is irrelevant.
Realistically what are the chance do the mavs have of landing Mello, Lebron, Durant, Love etc?
less than zero
Are the Rangers actively looking to bolster the pitching (starting or bullpen) externally, or is it too early to start looking?
too early. they have colby and they hope he can find a groove. Harrison is getting better physically. We don't know how long Perez will be out. Holland will return in July.
Hey JJT! I watched the video on L'Damian Washington and it was very powerful. What are the odds that he makes the team. Blazing speed during the 40 with a time of 4.39
can we go to training camp first, bro?
JJT, I'm not one of those who thinks Romo is the problem with the Cowboys. However, I'm a little worried about the enormous contract JJ gave him last year. Seems to me that if Romo's back is worse than JJ is letting on, we could be in for a few long, cold seasons.
Unless you looked at his medical records you don't know for sure and neither do I. We just have to wait and see
JJT, this draft is pretty much like jerrah's cowboys...avg 500 draft....i get that we are handicapped with romos contract but we arent going to be any better than .500 why not start the rebuilding with johnny manziel...if not that why not calvin pryor combo with jernigan in 2nd and trai turner in the 3rd......Saftey, 1 technique, and guard ....instead of Guard and potential pass rusher
this is the best I can do for you. http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4727614/passing-on-manziel-right-move-for-jonesYou can accept reality or not. The choice is completely up to you.
Why should we expect the Cowboys defense to be much better in 14? Not much seems to have changed...other than coordinator. thanks
They added Lawrence. They've added depth on DL. They expect JJ Wilcox to improve along with Morris Claiborne and Bruce Carter. We'll see. it's all talk until the pads get put on
Is it time for the Mavericks to start thinking about rebuilding?
not as long as Dirk is on the roster
Would the Cowboys have selected Aaron Donald were he available? Is there any reason NOT to be mortified or concerned about our defense?
They wanted Donald, Barr or Shazier
Who would you rather the Mavs try to get in the offseason, Deng or Ariza? Larry Sanders or Tyson Chandler?
Deng is most talented
In your opinion, are Cowboys fans the worst in the NFL? To me, they are the most negative fan base in the league. There are other fans in the NFL that would love to be at least in contention for a playoff spot in week 17. I know that falling short is frustrating, but fans are always predicting 5-11 or 6-10, when in reality, that hasn't been the case in a number of years.
there're no different than any other fan base
With three first round picks on the OLine will Cowboys have a better run/pass ratio?
they should. No expects 50-50, but if they could have a 62-38 instead of 67-33 it would be much better
Any truth to the rumor the cowboys wanted Shazier?
What are your thoughts on Bruce Carter? Was last year just a product of scheme change or is there more?
The scheme change really affected him. No other way to look at it. Another year in the system should help him
How do you feel about giving up a 3rd in a deep draft to draft Lawrence? Assuming you trust the scouting department, he's worth a late one, so I'm very torn on this...
It's about getting the player you want, especially when that position is critical to your defense. I have no problem with it. I had no problem going to get Mo Claiborne, but it didn't work out. The Cowboys hope this one will work out
JJT, I follow a lot of writers for my teams(Cowboys, Wizards, Braves) and can say that you appear to have the most readiness to understand this point - I have to say that as an internal perfomance enhancing professional it frustrates me as a fan to look at the Cowboys over the years and see no apparent results of focus on more than a fraction of who they are, which are there skills to play the game. I know all teams have psychological staff members but, when was the last time they allowed someone on staff that focused on the rest of the fraction?
Dude, I have zero idea what you're talking about.
If the boys wouldve gotten Shazier, u think they wouldve still traded up to get Lawrence??
nope. Shazier could've provided the same thing they want Lawrence to provide - a speed rush off the edge. He just would've been blitzing instead of having hand on ground
As much as I hate to say it, Orlando Scandrick was our best corner last year. Is he going to get the opportunity to step up and compete for a starting job with the fall off of Claiborne
he should. He should be the starter when training camp begins
How does the DAL org not perceive safety as a bigger issue? To me it seems glaring. Wilcox is young but wasn't impressive and Heath just isn't good.
heath was supposed to be ST player - not on the field with game on the line. Wilcox did good job until mom died in training camp. Who knows how long it took him to focus and get right mentally. He played at Georgia Southern. He should make a big jump this season
Whoa is this a chat or a book reading? Assuming Zach Martin is an opening day starter, what's the potential for this O-line? Top10? 5? Best in the league?
should be good, but it depends on what version of Doug Free u get
If Cowboys go 8-8 or worse. or they go 9-7 and miss playoffs...will Garrett be fired.
what if they went 10-6 and missed the playoffs like Arizona?
Four years ago the OL was the 'Boys biggest weakness. Now it may be one of their strengths. Will Jerruh or Red J pursue Brian Waters to play OG again this season?
no room for Waters this season
you know they're ripping the Pats inNew England for taking a QB in the 2nd because they have some needs and they drafted a dude who isn't going to play
It seems fairly evident the DAL org has huge expectations for Crawford. What have you seen or what has he shown that backs that?
nothing. but that's because he was hurt last year. We'll see. They've studied him a lot more than I have
Any way to tell how much of an impact Will Clay had on the draft?
McClay put the draft board together
JJT,Did the Cowboys do enough in the 2014 draft to address the weaknesses of the defensive front seven?
they drafted three DL and 2 LBs. We'll see
Are you surprised to see Jerry Jones change the process so much this offseason? Is he actually learning from Balt., Sea. and SF?
this is Jason Garrett's influence for those folks who call him a puppet
I agree with your take on the Lawrence pick, so my question is slightly different: How do you feel the Cowboys have done evaluating talent the past couple years? I see very mixed results (i.e. Church on one hand and most 4th round picks recently on the other).
this is the first year McClay has been in charge of the draft. There's a reason he's in charge of the draft., And there's a reason a change was made
JJT - I kow the Cowboys have a lot of holes, but OL depth concerns me, we have only one true center on the roster, are there reserves, practice squad guys the organization is high on ? Thanks
Bernadeau is backup center
With Ahmad Dixon part of the team for now, is it safe to say this is matt johnson's final year if he gets hurt again?
I suppose. But Dixon is a late 7th. No guarantee he makes team
The measurables don't seem that different between D. Lawrence, Jeffcoat and Sam. How do the scouts distinguish?
Fractions of a second matter in this business. But different positions require different physical traits. We need more time than this forum has to discuss it in its entirety. I'll try to get an answer at the minicamp this weekend. the reality is Lawrence was gonna be drafted in first 40 picks whether Cowboys took him, Sam lasted to end of draft and Jeffcoat went undrafted
With Dez 6'2 Williams 6'2 witten 6'5 and Escobar 6'6" and even the fifth round receiver Street 6'3 do you see the cowboys throwing the ball more deep this year?
if they get good protection they can throw deep. That size might help more in the red zone
Will Murray be in Texas next year? Adrian Peterson is going into free Agency next year. Would be come to the boys?
why would you want 30 YO RB. Murray will either get reasonable team friendly deal or Dallas will draft runner
I like what the Cowboys did with the DLineman drafted. How many could they keep this year? If they keep 9 or less, then some pretty decent guys, even ones from last year like Nick Hayden could be cut. It seems like Bishop, McClain, and Bass are all better players than Hayden, even though he was a blessing last year.
8 or 9
Hi Jean-Jacques,I hope you're having a good day. While I think Zack Martin was a good and smart pick, I must confess I'm still baffled at why the Cowboys didn't draft either Pyor or Clinton-Dix. Why is this and why have the Cowboys not addressed this Achilles Heel that's been in their defense ever since Darren Woodson retired?
they like Wilcox and they had martin ranked higher
When are your Buckeyes gonna step up and schedule my Irish?
We kicked your butt 45-26 at our house. We kicked your butt 29-16 at your house and we kicked your butt 34-20 on neutral field the last 3 times we met. We need higher grade opponent
Can Crawford play DT? I know you dont' have to be huge guy in the 4-3 scheme but isn't he a bit undersized to play tackle?
he can play all along DL. That;'s why they like him
Do you like the way the Rangers are using Michael Choice?
Yes. there aren't that many options. Rios, Choo and Martin are handling their business. Moreland is hot now so there's no extra ABs at DH.
No room for Waters? Please give a brief explanation.
How is Neftali Feliz's tommy johns sergery progressing? When the rangers finally put him in a starting role I thought he looked like a strong pitcher. That fast ball is incredably. Any chance he could make it back this year?
he's supposed to be activated this week
Any chance that Parnell or Weems emerge as a starter? Time invested in them.
Did JJT fall asleep?
I was trying to look up something about the combine
Can you explain to people that if the Cows had drafted Manziel he would not have seen the field this season unless things went horribly wrong, so we would've wasted a first round pick. Then we would be in the exact same situation next year but with better pro prospects at QB coming out in Mariota and Winston. The worst thing they could've done was draft Manziel. Good work in the draft room this year.
I've done it about a 100 different times. People choose to accept and believe what they want to believe
Archer is reporting that Crawford is going to backup LDE and 3Tech. Do you like me find this to be surprising. Selvie did a good job last year, but shouldn't Crawford get a chance to beat him out to start at LDE. Plus, since he can slide inside in Nickel formation since Nickel plays 2 3Tech DT anyway and then Selvie could play LDe in Nickel if he was beaten out by Crawford. Thoughts on this report by Archer?
I don't care. I'll wait to see them play at training camp. If crawford is the best player he'll start
Do you think Fielder would benefit hitting 3rd with Beltre hitting behind him like the original plan was?
irrelevant. he just needs to swing better
great chat today. I'll holla at y'all next week.
