Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! And that's saying something in our sport. Bubba and Adam choke. Phil's looking for "the feds" after every round now. And Stacy Lewis is back at #1. What's on YOUR mind?! BRING IT!!

Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)

Sorry MC, I totally shanked last week's chat... I'm teeing up a mulligan. Before the final round, Bubba said... We'll see how it goes, as long as the bills get paid it'll be ok... What the hell? I said it once and I'll say it again... #soft

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

There was no chat last week (holiday) and the week before I was shooting a feature about Dave Pelz backyard so it's been a minute. As for Bubba... not soft, just puts golf #3 in his life and that's ok.

Dan (Carefree, AZ)

Good afternoon Michael; Do you think that we will ever again see a Major - or any tournament for that matter - won by at least 7 strokes? With today's parity I do not see any golfer being able to do this again. Your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

Hey Dan! I do believe sometime we'll see a dominating performance in a major. All it will take is for a guy to make a run like Rory did at the US Open in 2011. As good as these guys are when one of them goes into the zone... oh baby!

Franco (Bryn Mawr, PA)

Have we reached the point yet whereby Tiger's back has received more media coverage than Curt Shilling's bloody ankle, Payton Manning's neck surgeries, and Sidney Crosby's concussions combined???

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

You can find whatever you want if you look hard enough. But the last week and a half has been all about everything else in golf. You gotta be really looking for Tiger stuff today to say that.

Tommi (Espoo, Finland)

Rant time:the OWGR has taken a lot of heat, not the least from MC himself. Completely, utterly unwarranted in my mind. There's always going to be calibration problems tackling a complex issue like this, but it does a fine job. It rewards sustained excellence (lately seems to be tough to have even a good full year, let alone two good years in a row, doesn't it) but obviously tilts things in favor of recent performance, nothing wrong there. Now, Scotty is number one with what, 9 avg points? Looking back, Tiger typically had at least 15 avg points. Go back to 2001 and for a time he had a whopping 32 points! That's a number one. But wait, if Tiger was taking everything, the rest of the top had less points than the current top guys, right? Wrong, Phil was second for a long time with >10 points, at times way more. Actually often in the past, number 3, even number 4 had more points than our current number one. So clearly the ranking system is not the problem, the (relatively) lackluster performance by the so-called elite is the problem. There are these violin contests where they don't give out the first prize if none of the contestants is deemed good enough. That's golf right now, the best guy has points worthy of 4th or 5th place bunched together with many others leading to this carousel at the top. Don't blame the rankings.

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

Feel better now? Good. I don't care how a guy played two years ago.. Who's the best player in the world TODAY?! If you were awesome last year and get your a** handed to you this year are you still the best? PUH LEASE!

Mr. Gay Caddy [via mobile]

Do you miss carrying heavy stuff and cleaning dudes balls? I miss you doing it.

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

Just so you all know, that's Kip Henley (Brian Gay's caddie) being... well himself! And I love ya and miss you too brother. And YES... I miss being a pack animal hiking up everest carrying and cleaning balls! HAHA And miss you too man.

Dave (Columbus)

Tommi, if that "question" was any longer you could have published it as a book.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I had to take a break while reading it! But I understand why he needed to vent about it. He makes a valid point.

BP (Philly)

Bubba always seems to blame everyone else for poor shots including your caddy. Bad form - your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

That's the exact opposite of what he does when the shots are going left and right. Teddy and I have laughed alot about this when it comes to Bubba... he's not in the top ten of worst guys on tour in blaming caddies.

Chris Fiegler (Latham.NY)

Do you think that Tiger Woods will be Out for the Season Due to his Back Injury?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Chris I would be perfectly happy if Tiger didn't return til 2015 if it meant he were going to stay 100% healthy for the whole season and could make a realistic run at Jack's record.

vic (no cal)

Do you think you'll ever do a golf chat this decade without a Tiger Woods question?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Nope.

Jake (Houston)

Is there any golfer in the last 20 years who has worse luck than Jim Furyk?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Greg Norman at Augusta

Andrew (WI)

I always thought the Phil/Pinehurst storyline was like something out of the movies, so if we can add a few federal agents ready to take Phil into custody next to the 18th green on Sunday, I'm all for it.

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

For the people who say golf is boring and there is no drama, I submit to you... Phil. HAHA

The real Johnny Vegas (Vegas Baby)

How much did playing with Bubba saturday hurt Paul Casey? Had a nice 110-1 ticket with him he shoots 12 under first 2 days all he had to do was shoot -3 the last 2 days and he wins. Or did he just choke?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

Wouldn't have mattered who he was playing with. He just forgot what those feelings are like playing in the final group and he didn't react well to getting them again. It happens.

Joanie (upstate NY)

Do you think Phil will like your video about his current issues he is dealing with. Trying to figure where you really stand on his chances after watching it. You kinda are on the fence. He hasn't done well after a runner up but address the seriousness of the situation. WILL HELP .???

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

I don't base my videos on whether or not players will like them. What I was trying to show in this video was Phil's follow-up record to a runner-up finish at the US Open. I believe because of this investigation, he won't have time to over think the "career grand slam" and in that sense it will help if he gets in contention.

sean (springfield)

Gambling is a major no-no in other sports. In baseball, Pete Rose is the shining example. Are there similar rules in golf? Are players not allowed to bet on tournament outcomes?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

Correct. Players are not supposed to gamble on outcomes of PGA Tour events. I think it may be a bit looser during the Open Championship (British Open)

Joanie (upstate NY)

THEN I LOVE THE VIDEO :)

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

So if I would have said Phil was gonna play horrible, you'd be pissed at me?! That's funny.

Mitch (Michigan)

What is the best course you have ever played and caddied in Michigan?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Both played and caddied Warwick Hills where they used to play a PGA Tour event.

Brian (CA)

Adam Scott 2014 U.S. Open Champion?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me

Charlie (Nashville, TN) [via mobile]

What are the most essential qualities in a golfer to ultimately win the US Open and at this point in time heading into next month's Open at Pinehurst, who do you believe best fits those criteria?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

Look for someone who's driving it well but has a great percentage getting up and down around the greens

Marc (Vegas)

You have prob answered this before, but for each event, what is the flat fee and % that a caddie is paid generally?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

It varies and is negotiable for every player and caddie. A good starting point is $1200 per week salary, then 10% for a win, 7% for a top ten, and 5% for everything else.

Marko (Victoria, BC)

Do tour pros purposefully step close to the hole after retrieving the ball to leave an imprint and effect the players behind? I've noticed several times this year players heels alarmingly close to the hole after completing the hole - this seems like a breach in etiquette or sportsmanship and a sneaky way to "try" and get an advantage...thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

I don't think any player does stuff like that anymore because many times the guys playing behind them are friends.

Al (Pensacola)

Always enjoy the chats MC, thanks. Any chance Bubba Watson can reel in self-driven mental mistakes (driver on 15 Sunday) and put together solid 72 holes at U.S. Open in two weeks?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Thanks Al. Problem for Bubba was, it wasn't just the driver that got squirrely. Remember on 14th tee he hit and iron right too. A week off will do him some good.

Gabe (Boise, ID)

With 500 bucks to spend on my golf game, what's the best way to go? I'm a weekend duffer.

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

Are you asking equipment or lessons?

Keith H (Seattle)

On the espn golf page, when listing the scores, the LPGA doesn't have earnings for the week. I'm not asking this to be nosy, but I would like to see the earnings listed just to bring up the gender inequities between the tours. What are your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

They post them on LPGA.com on their leaderboard after the event. I'm honestly not sure why we don't do it but I don't think we do it for Champions Tour or Web.Com either.

The real Johnny Vegas (Vegas Baby)

Ever caddy for someone who had a rough night out before the round?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

Oh yeah, caddied for a guy who was still drunk when we teed off on Friday... shot 32... lost his buzz, hangover started and shot 46 on the back.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Good afternoon, MC! This year Phil has five missed cuts and no top 10 finishes. Any reason to think he'll contend in the US Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

Yep. I think if he gets a top ten this week he'll contend. So much stuff going on off the course I think will benefit him.

Joanie (upstate NY)

YOU HAVE SAID IN THE PAST YOU THOUGHT HE CHOKES TOO MUCH UNDER THE big pressure. I would be pissed but in a nice way. I am a Phil Fan right to my bones!!

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Numbers back me up. Glad you stopped yelling at me too. As a lefty golfer (with a lefty goling son) I'd be lying if I didn't say I pull for lefties to win.

The real Johnny Vegas (Vegas Baby)

Can Cali Chrome win the triple crown?

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

I hope so, that'd be awesome!

Marc (Vegas)

Wow, I'm surprised actually that caddies are not paid more. You consider travel costs, housing, and meals, unless the week ends in a top 10 finish, seems like for the week you would break even.

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

That's why it's so important for caddies to have the new association because the majority of guys out there are NOT making big bank.

Colin (Philly)

Does Rory win a major this year? Also, how many tournaments will he win?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

I think he will win one. I say he wins 3 PGA Tour events

thomas (austin)

I'm one of those people who watch golf religiously when Phil or Tiger are in contention, and barely tune in when they are not (except for maybe the Masters). If you were trying to sell the sport to me - to watch religiously all the time - what points would you make?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Are you watching for great golf or just because you like those guys? I'd say I still watch sports when my team's not playing cause I wanna see greatness. Are you impressed by others when watching touranments Phil and Tiger are playing in? Then why not see what happens when their not?!

Evan (Houston)

If you're trying to figure out which golfer in the world is most likely to win the next tournament, in a vacuum, then results two years ago do matter. They matter less than more recent results, hence the weighting factor, but if a guy won two years ago does help predict if he will win next week.

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

So you think Luke Donald will win then based on this calculation. Cause he's ranked 18th. How many PGA Tour wins he got the last two years? I'll take Jimmy Walker, you take Luke. Jimmy's ranked 19th. How much you wanna put on the table cause my checkbook is FAT!

Bud (Wyoming) [via mobile]

What are the qualifications to retains ones tour card this year? Is it money based or fed x cup points based?

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

FedEx Cup based

Tyrone (Pensicola)

Hey Micheal, 5 quick picks for the us open...2 guys in top 25 OWGR...2 Sleepers and one way off the board super sleeper...GO

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

I'll do a top 25 the week of the US Open. And spell my name right next time.

Jay (PA)

In response to Keith's questions, larger purses on the PGA Tour compared to the LPGA is not in any way a "gender inequality." Sorry, I just hate when that word is used where it does not belong.

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

To me it's about ratings which turns into sponsorship dollars and into bigger purses.

Ryan (Charlotte)

Hey MC - how amenable should I expect the women to be at the US Open during a practice round? I'm taking my 6 year old daughter. Thanks.

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

My experience with the Women of the LPGA Tour was amazing which is why I fought so hard to cover the Women's US Open. They were all great giving autographs and taking pictures.

Ryan (Charlotte)

What do you think ultimately happens with the FBI/SEC probe into Mickelson and others? What, if any, rumors around tour are you hearing?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

No clue what's gonna happen but I do know it ain't gonna be quick. I don't play the rumor game.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Thanks for chat, MC! Heat or Spurs? GO :)

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Heat in 7 games

Austin (Pittsburgh)

Sounds like you should have grabbed that guy another drink or two at the turn!

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

Not allowed... but it would've helped I bet!

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

I attend the Memorial every Friday for the past 10 years or so. I make a concerted effort to chat with caddies. I have also played Muirfield half a dozen times or so. As a 5, I find my 84's there frustrating, but I have never found the drink on #12. The #1 golfer in the world shouldn't either. The horror show was tough to watch Sunday.

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

And he knew it as soon as he hit it.

Evan (Houston)

OWGR isn't a perfect measure, but there is also a long history of players winning several times, then fading away. And a guy that has won by one or two shots three times in the last eight months isn't that far ahead of a guy that has three top-five finishes in that time-frame, plus a history of wins.

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

Fair enough

Colin (Philly)

how will pinehurst hold up during back to back opens?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

That will really depend on mother nature.

Smitty (Albany,New York)

Michael, How do you and your media pals look in the mirror in regards to MIckelson and Tiger. Can you guys really hate Woods this much ? Phil could be Martha Stewert in less than a year. Then what will you do?

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

You're saying I hate Tiger Woods? I love it when people say thing about me without facts. Martha was charged with lying to feds. Phil's not even accused of that. Get your facts straight before you start an argument with me ya idiot.

Jacer24 (Rialto, CA)

Thanks for the chat MC... See ya next week!

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel! I missed y'all... well... most of y'all! haha! Your caddie, MC
