Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (11:59 AM)

Greetings people. Thank you for coming by. Pump up USA vs. Portugal. Let's dig in.

Robinson from Fairview [via mobile]

What are the chances Antonio Andrews makes the 53 man roster?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:01 PM)

I suspect slim. He'd have to beat our Shonn Greene or Jackie Battle. The Titans invested a great deal in Greene a year ago and haven't really had access to him healthy yet. They like Battle's versatility as he can be RB/FB. I would think Andrews is a solid practice squad possibility. But if he's huge in camp, who knows?

Kyle from Evansville [via mobile]

Who do you wanna see play the SB halftime show next season? Personally I wanna see Jimmy Buffett rock it out!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:02 PM)

I have zero interest in him. And only slightly more than that in SB halftime.

Darin (slc) [via mobile]

How has tommy smith compaired so far to other first time owners, past and present? Does he seem competent in the job, and does he really have the team's best interest in mind?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:02 PM)

Has said and done all the right things so far as far as I can tell. Why would he have something other than the team's best interests in mind? Like what?

Elvis from Nashville [via mobile]

Is James Gayle's injury season long or could he return after week 8?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:03 PM)

Season-ending. He was waived injured, cleared waivers and reverted to IR.

John Ferris (Los Angeles, CA)

Do you think the Titans would trade Michael Roos if the right offer presents itself during training camp or preseason?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:03 PM)

Possible if both Oher and Lewan are great. Still, I think unlikely.

Robby from Henderson KY [via mobile]

Out of the 3 punt/kick returners, Mariana, McCluster, and Washington, who will be the odd man out?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

Well McCluster is on the team without question. And Washington is better than Mariani to me. If Marc makes the team he's going to have to do things as a receiver.

Matt (Clarksville) [via mobile]

First off, I enjoy listening to you on the Mid-Day180. With CJ's comments on the radio about Titans doing him "dirty", why is it that organizations get villified for making business decisions, but when players hold out while under contract it's "just business" applies and players applaud them?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

I don't know that it's that cut and dried. But fans tend to like and feel they know players far more than they feel that way about team businessmen.

Casey (Los Angeles) [via mobile]

Saw Whiz give a no-answer on the best-man-in-camp question. Do you have anybody who stuck out in the eye test?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:05 PM)

There is no way to declare an MVP of practices without pads and contact.

Casey (Los Angeles) [via mobile]

Since we've officially entered the most boring part of the off-season, care to take a stab at your guess at the most improved player under the new regime? (Outside of Hunter, obviously.)

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

Hunter! I think Levitre will be significantly better. I think Wimbley will be significantly better because of the scheme change. As far as budding young guys, I think Blidi Wreh-WIlson is going to be good.

John Ferris (Los Angeles, CA)

I've been reading and listening to preseason hype for the Titans since '99. The Superbowl has been elusive. How many years out is this team from a true run? Two? Three?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

Teams flip and make big gains every year. When the Titans turn for that is, I can't say. But they are in the bunch of teams it's possible for this season.

Zach (Minnesota)

If and when Jake Locker goes down this season, at this point, would Mettenberger or Whitehurst be the replacement?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

Whitehurst. Ken Whisenhunt said outright yesterday that Charlie is the No. 2.

Albert (LA)

The Titans haven't signed Lewan. Are they waiting to see when the trial information comes out or is it taking longer to sign him? It always seems like the Titans are one of the last teams every year to sign their first round pick.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:10 PM)

The timetable of signing a pick is absolutely irrelevant now. It's basically slotted money and a first-rounder is four years with a fifth-year team option that needs to be executed after the third year. What could the court case do to change anything? He will be signed for camp. When it's official means zero.

casey (los angeles) [via mobile]

Hey Paul, What's the general mood of the team heading out of training camp as opposed to year's past?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:10 PM)

Heading out of mini-camp, the mood is upbeat. It's always upbeat. Offseason work is all about everything being upbeat.

Phil (New York)

Do you know if there was any discussion between Titans officials and coaches to get on Hard Knocks; or were they glad they were able to dodge that bullet? I personally think it would've been a great chance to show everyone the Titans are still around.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

As a team with a new head coach, they were exempt from consideration and I am sure they were thrilled to be so. They aren't interested in showing everyone they are still around. I'm not convinced people have forgotten they are still around. There was no contraction.

Cjg6710 (Boston)

Do you expect a bigger improvement from the O line or LBs? Both seemed to under perform last year

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:13 PM)

The O-line simply has to be better. They've got six talented guys. The linebackers will be better too, but some of the guys they have could finish proving they are duds.

James (NO) [via mobile]

Will George Wilson see more playing time in Horton's defense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

Don't know. He played a good deal last year. They'll play some three-safety. He'll be used for some TE matchups, I'd guess. But he's unlikely to play ahead of Pollard or Griffin at any point.

Peyton Manning (Denver)

Hey Pete,I keep track of you and moving the chat to Friday without a heads up? We seem to have a communication problem.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

Check my timeline, pal. Sent a Tweet yesterday giving a heads up.

R j [via mobile]

Over/under cj runs for 1400 yards w new team

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

Under.

Daniel (Springfield,TN)

Depth wise what position concerns you more qb or corner if there was to be an injury to jake or one of the starting corners in training camp?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

Nobody is good at QB if they lose their top guy. And I think their corner depth isn't a big issue if Marqueston Huff proves a decent pick.

Stephen (work)

I know Ken said Whitehurst is the No. 2... But, come on, if Locker goes down then screw this season. Whitehurst isnt the answer. I say prepare for the future and go with Mett.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:17 PM)

I think they would do that later on in the season if Mettenberger progresses. The in-game sub needs to play without having practiced. Whitehurst is that guy. If they then are without Locker for an extended period and they can gameplan for Mettenberger and give him a full week of prep, then sure, they should go that direction if they are confident.

Albert (LA)

Which away game this season are you as a journalist most interested to cover? KC for the BBQ? Philly for the fans?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

As I'm from the Northeast, trips to Philly, Baltimore and Washington always rate high. See some family in Philly. Check out old haunts in DC where I spent 18 months at the start of my career. Wander the harbor in Baltimore.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

with rumors going around of a team moving to LA or London, is it possible the Titans are the team to make the move?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

No.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

what has been the biggest regret of the titans in the past 3 seasons/offseasons?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:19 PM)

Hiring Munchak should be. Basically a lost three years on behalf of sentiment.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Does the headset being in the MLB's helmet make him indespencible in a dime formation on D?--i know there are hand signals for play calling, at least.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:20 PM)

There is no rule that the MLB has to have the headset. And they now have a Buck and a Mack (or something like that) and not a Mike.

Albert (LA)

Which current Titan would you want having your back when you confront John Rich?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

Maybe Lewan? He has good taste in music as he's a Kings of Leon guy. And obviously he doesn't lack the nasty streak.

Simple Truth (Hard to Find)

Those who think Hard Knocks is a way to get national interest in your team need to realize the best way to get noticed is to win games and make the playoffs.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

Amen.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Do you think the "cancer" is gone?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

Some gone, some "under better control/guidance/leadership."

Blaine (Kentucky) [via mobile]

How does and how well does Casey fit in the 3-4?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

He'll be just fine. He'll get more one-on-ones and it's not a 2-gap 3-4 where he is asked to do much different than he's done so far. Altered defensive fronts don't need so much adjustment time.

Brian (Nashville) [via mobile]

If Locker stays healthy, improves, and gets us a winning record... Do the Titans sign him for long term or is this without a doubt his last year with the team?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

If it was without a doubt his last year why would they be going with him? It's an audition.

Hanson (DC)

What seems to be the most noticeable difference in the team with new leadership at the owner level?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:24 PM)

I think people in the building feel it's easier to get resources they need than it was over Bud. Tommy Smith isn't stuck in his ways, because he has no ways in that role to be stuck in.

Wesley (Hickory, NC)

I like Washington as KR but I don't think he is better then Mariani. I watched Washington get caught from behind pretty easily on his long returns.. I feel He lost a lot of speed that I think mariani has that advantage over him.. I know both aren't the fastest out there . Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:25 PM)

Washington is better.

Sam (GA) [via mobile]

What does Kendall Wright need to do to take the next step? Can he be a difference maker?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

Absolutely he can. They need to put him in position to make more big plays -- which means some deeper stuff out of the slot, more routes from outside, a role in potential Wildcat stuff (he said he played a little QB this week). How about some reverses too? Titans will get creative with use of Wright.

Little Steven (Ocean Grove) [via mobile]

"Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band" That's the legend.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

It was a solid argument.

Casey (Los Angeles) [via mobile]

You tend to agree with Cosell that Sanke is more of a third down back or do you think he could be an every down guy like the Titans hope? Please do not give me the Kuharsky holding-my-reservation-til-I-see-something answer.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:28 PM)

Holding my opinion until i see something. Sorry. If the Titans think he's an every-down kind of back, I'm going to give him a chance to show he is or isn't.

Hanson (DC)

Does the outcome of the jimmy Graham arbitration change how the franchise tag rule is applied, forcing the NFL to better define position or changing the format completely?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:29 PM)

I think if a guy is called a tight end and is in the tight end meeting room he's a tight end. I think it's ridiculous to cite how often he lined up as a receiver. Tight ends split out. It's part of their job. If a receiver takes a bunch of handoffs on reverses, is he a running back? If a safety is up in the box doing linebacker-like work is he a linebacker? It's just part of the job. He should be judge a tight end and these ridiculous debates should end. The Players Association signed off on the franchise system as it is.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Has the TE became the most important, non QB, on offense in today's league?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

No. I don't know that we can define such a thing. But a LT is awfully important. A top WR is too.

Darryn (Murfreesboro)

Odds we make it out of the group stage? I'd say about 60% but that is assuming we play more offensive against Portugal. After Dempsey scored against Ghana, we dropped 9 guys behind the ball and our only hope to score was to get lucky on a counter. Looked much better after the equalizer when we knew we had to get 3 points.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

I think we will play way better. Bradley can't play that badly again and worse is impossible. Doesn't mean we win, though.

Wes (TN)

Paul you think there's any chance Earl Bennett gets a shot back here? We're short on quality WRs and he's familiar with the area. Concerning Cleveland cut him obviously tho

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:33 PM)

I'm amazed how often familiarity with the area is mentioned in such instances. You really think that's a factor? It's not. Nor should it be. It's about whether they like him as a player. If they like a guy who's never set foot in the South, they pursue. If they don't like a guy who's from the South, they ignore him. The Browns need receiver help way more than Titans do, and they just cut him.

Jake (Nashville)

I'm excited to see the competition between Sensabaugh and Wreh-Wilson this summer. Are there any early indications on who will take the #2 corner spot and who will line up as the nickel?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

No indications. I expect BWW to win No. 2 and Sensabaugh to be the nickel.

Papa John [via mobile]

Delivery or DiGiorno?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:35 PM)

I'm off pizza. Need to get a new headshot to show I'm not so fat anymore.

Keith (Florida)

Who would be your 2 favorite current Titans to interview?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

Off the top of my head... Jurrell Casey -- candid and unafraid. And probably Delanie Walker for similar reasons.

Darryn (Murfreesboro)

Any chance the Titans change their primary logo to the Titan sword? Would be a cool way of Tommie Smith stepping out of Bud's shadow.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

I'd like the move. I don't think it's front-burner. That's not the reason to do it.

Tony Horton (Your living room)

Have you been using my tapes, Paul?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

No. I'm a C25K app guy right now.

Tom (DuBois pa)

Hello Paul, Im a big fan. It looks to me at least on paper that the Titans have made a big jump in the division as far as talent goes. Your thoughts...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

Thanks. I don't know that it's been that big. And even if it is, if the QB can't play consistently well and stay healthy it might not matter.

Darryn (Murfreesboro)

Are you still sticking with your prediction that Switzerland wins it all?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

Make a wild prediction and you can't bail on it before everyone has even played a second game. Plenty of the historically top teams look great. [Update: France showed the Swiss aren't the defense team I thought they could be. Bad call.]

Darryn (Murfreesboro)

Has Simon gravitated towards any strange teams for the world cup? Mexico looked pretty good against Brazil...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

Has watched a ton. But is being taught a lot about the home team and seems to have an affinity for it. White uniforms the next two games won't help.

Blueman (Indy)

Lots of talk this off season about new defense not fitting the personnel, who do you think the change is actually a benefit for,and does fit their style of play?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:47 PM)

Clearly benefits Kamerion Wimbley and Akeem Ayers. May be tougher on Karl Klug. But Ray Horton is going to shape it to make it work for what he has.

Brent (the valet) (Charlotte)

Does Munchak have any hostility towards the Titans organization? Or does he understand that he was an awful HC?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

No one likes to be fired. And he was willing to unload some staff, but not as much as the brass wanted. Respectable stand for him, but the ultimate result was the best one for the team. I don't believe he believes he was bad. And I think he'll always have high regard for the franchise.

Austin (Evansville) [via mobile]

Are either Steve McNair, Bud Adams, or Eddie George NFL HOF worthy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

Im my eyes, no, no and definitely no.

Keith (Florida)

Liked how Whiz addressed the need for Ayers and Brown to step up and produce at linebacker. Any reason either one of those guys become game-changers this year? Or they are what they are?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

Brown may be good. I have seen less from Ayers to give me faith. I won't be surprised if neither is anything special.

Phil (New York)

Obviously winning solves these problems, but the Titans haven't been doing it recently...I feel like even the Jags get more coverage right now (at least on ESPN) than the Titans do.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

Why worry about coverage? I simply don't understand it. Read me. Read The Tennessean. Look at the team web site. There is no lack of stuff about the team if you want to see it. Why is how it gets played a factor in your fandom or life?

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

What is holding back the NFL from being "America's Game" compared to MLB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

Not a thing. Football took over baseball's status a long time ago.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Who are the players on the last year of their contracts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:52 PM)

Don't know all of them, but they include Casey, Locker. Morgan, Ayers, Wilson.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Which would you rather have: mobile QB or a pocket QB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

Pocket all the way. I want him to be able to sidestep pressure. But first and foremost, I want my QB to be able to drop back, find people and get rid of the ball.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Which plays better this year--offense or defense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:54 PM)

Tough call at this stage. I'd say defense right now, I think.

Brent (the valet) (Charlotte)

How often to you fly to the ESPN headquarters?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:54 PM)

Average about once a year.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Is Manziel a stud, bust, or average?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:55 PM)

I'm not super confident he pans out, but I do think he will flash big some time early in his career.

Albert (LA)

What's the one food you have seen at other stadiums that you wish LP Field could feature?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:56 PM)

Baltimore's crab cakes are awesome. But they are very much a Baltimore thing.

Brent (the valet) (Charlotte)

Bluegrass or New Age Country music?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:57 PM)

What's the third option? I like Lucinda WIlliams. And Will Hoge who's now kind of country-rock. And old Steve Earle.

Handel (Canton)

When the season starts will you run features on a structured schedule and then add different breaking story things as they happen?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

I always have some furniture posts -- weekly staples other things are placed around. I'll always react to news developments as they happen. Beyond that, I'm always confident I'll see or hear something that I will think readers will be interested in and I write as I find those things.

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Americans dont like soccer because ______?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

They think it's cool not to?

Ben (Louisa, Ky)

Best NFL venue is _______?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

Lambeau.

Porky (Piggly WIggly)

T-t-t-t-that's all folks

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

Thanks Porky. Thanks all. Have a big weekend.
